It’s Time to Get Lost n’ Lava

Award winning Cowboys and Cowgirls are on their way to Shoshone, Idaho, for the 5th Annual Lost N Lava Cowboy Gathering to be held on September 19th, 20th and 21st.

A Kickoff Potluck will be held on September 18th starting at 6 p.m. with great food and entertainment around the campfire.

Friday, September 19th, is a free-themed day. Shows begin at 9:30 a.m. with Cowboy Classics with Bryan Dilworth. At 11 a.m.

Cowboy Poets of Idaho will be on stage, followed by North by Northwest with JB Barber and Farmer Dave. Future of the West with Colt Angel, and Horse & Horseman with David Anderson will begin at 4 p.m.

Evening concerts begin at 7 p.m. with preshow beginning at 6:15. Friday evening concert includes Tony Argento, Bill Chiles, Jenny Lynn Anderson, Wayne Nelson, Farmer Dave and JB Barber, Stan Howe, and Kristyn Harris.

Saturday’s events include a community breakfast by the VFW Post 3001 starting at 8 a.m. Saturday day shows begin at 9:30 a.m. with Contemporary Cowboy Music with Coyote Joe and Little Joe. At 11 a.m. enjoy Cowboy Humor with Tony Argento. Balladeers & Bards with Bill Chiles will take the stage at 1 p.m. followed by Western Swing North

and South with Stan Howe and Kristyn Harris at 2:30 p.m., and Great Basin Cowboys with Wayne Nelson at 4 p.m..

Saturday Evening Concert will feature Sam DeLeeuw, Fall River Boys, David Anderson, JB Barber and Farmer Dave, Coyote Joe and Little Joe, Thatch Elmer, and Colt Angel.

Sunday events will include Cowboy Church starting at 9:30 a.m. and Open Mic sessions will begin at 11 a.m.

Other events for Lost N Lava include vendors from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from 11 to 3 on Sunday. A silent auction featuring donated clothing from Wrangler Western Wear, Poetry Books, and Original Painting by Ann Parker. A Live Auction will be held at 2:30 p.m. featuring a quilt with all the entertainers from the 2014 gathering, a trail ride sampler quilt, donated jackets from D&B Supply, and Western Wear from Wrangler.

Nine-year-old Caden Braun from Gooding was the State Wrestling Champion in his weight division last season. He’s tough as nails and knows how to fight to win. Just one month ago, however, he started a different kind of battle - the fight against Leukemia.

The odds are in his favor, if he is able to get all the care he needs. Unfortunately, even with insurance his family needs help with expenses like the weekly trips to hospital in Boise.

Wendell School Bonds Fail

In last Tuesday’s Bond Election for the Wendell School District, the number of votes again failed to meet the two/thirds requirement to pass those proposals.

312 ballots were cast in favor of the $250,000 maintenance reserve fund (496 total votes) and 317 ballots were cast in favor of the $1.5 Bond (488 total votes) - 63% and 65% respectively.

The Wendell school district was not alone in failing to pass bond proposals. Notus (North Canyon County) and Lake Hazel (West Ada County) school districts saw their proposals fail by similar percentages.

One reason these bonds failed is because of perseption of mismanagement.

In addition to the obvious impact to the environment, this damage can have a devastating impact on recreation and business, as well as property values; it can increase the intensity of forest fires; and the cost to try to control the pests can be astronomical.

About 75 percent of new infestations are caused by the transport of infested firewood to campgrounds and parks.

The Don’t Move Firewood campaign began in 2007 as a response to the rapid spread of the emerald ash borer, a small, green, Asian beetle which was most likely brought to the United States onwood packaging in the early 1990’s.

Often described as one of the most destructive insects to ever invade this country, the emerald ash borer, or EAB, has already killed over 100 million ash trees in the U.S., and is a threat to all ash trees nationwide. The annual cost for tree treatment, removal, and replacement alone probably tops $1 billion, not to mention other costs that the unwelcome little beetle incurs.

But the EAB is far from alone. More than 450 non-native forest insects and diseases are now established in the United States, including Asian longhorned beetle, European gypsy moth, Dutch elm disease, Sirex woodwasp, thousand cankers disease, hemlock woolly adelgid, sudden oak death, and many others.

To limit the spread of these insects and diseases, many states regulate how far firewood can be legally transported, and some states prohibit out-of-state firewood from being brought into the state. continued on page 10.....

U.S. 26 West of Gooding Closed Thursday

Repairs to a culvert crossing west of Gooding will detour traffic and close U.S. 26 on Thursday, September 4th.

ITD workers will replace an irrigation culvert between 1750 and 1800 East Roads, about one mile west of Gooding. Highway traffic will be detoured north one mile to 1800 South Road during the one-day operation.

Drivers are asked to use an alternate route if possible, but if traveling on the detour to use caution and reduce speed. The closure and detour will begin at about 7 a.m. and the roadway is expected to reopen to traffic by 5 p.m.

Joint Camas/Gooding 4-H Horse Show

The Camas and Gooding 4-H will be hosting a joint 4H horse show/playday on Saturday, September 6th starting at 10:30 a.m. at the TNT Arena.

If you are in 4-H and would like to participate, you can for free - show is not limited to horse club kids, open to all 4-H members. You must have an approved equestrian helmet to ride.

The class list and entry form are posted on the Silver Spurs Facebook page. Spectators welcome, pack a lunch and some chairs.

Voters are also concerned about raising taxes, especially in communities where a large percentage of residents do not have school-aged children.

Regardless of the reason, the question for all of these schools is whether to try again in November.

In March of this year, Wendell’s first attempt to pass a bond received 54% approval. Last week’s results were a significant improvement, and the narrow margin of failure will likely persuade the Wendell School District to put these proposal on the November ballot.

Carol Mae Mason Hamilton Carol Mae Mason Hamilton, 68, of Jerome, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2014. She was born May 14, 1946, in Gooding, Idaho, the daughter of Oscar and Nora Jasper Mason.

Carol is survived by her children; Tammara Wade and Brian (Shawna) Wade.

Seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; her sisters, Deloris Daniell and Donna Glenn; and her brother, Donald Mason; and her long-time companion, Hugh Gallaher.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother-inlaw, Pete Daniell and her nephew, Joesph Melugin.

Carol’s children and family wishes to thank the 4th floor nursing staff of St Luke’s Magic Valley & the caring staff of River Ridge Care Center.

Funeral services were on Tuesday September 2, 2014, at the Jerome LDS 10th Ward Chapel. Interment was at the Jerome Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Farnsworth Mortuary of Jerome.

John Frank Chambers

John Frank Chambers, 71, of Gooding, passed away April 28, 2014, in Pocatello, Idaho. He was born March 12, 1943, in Bell, California, the son of Frank Amos Chambers and Fern Louise Skinn Chambers.

John was raised in California and later served his country in the United States Navy. He spent several years with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Upon retiring, he settled in Idaho.

John enjoyed raising cattle and working on his farm. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a tireless advocate for the disabled.

John is survived by his son, Eric Chambers; his sister, Patricia Campbell and his brother, Rod Chambers; he is also survived by his companion, Barbara Jamison; and many extended family members and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his son, Robert Chambers.

Graveside memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday September 8, 2014, at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery (10100 Horseshoe Bend Road, Boise, Idaho). Arrangements are under the care of Farnsworth Mortuary of Jerome.

On Behalf of the Board Members of the Idaho Rodeo Hall of Fame, we would like to thank all of the sponsors who participated in the First competition of the Best Decorated Steer Fundraiser. We were amazed at the response, the creative and humorous depictions, of bulls, steers and Queens and most importantly the spirit of community and competition that was shown. We have had many people ask us not to take them down because they enjoyed seeing them so much. Next year we are planning to have categories to judge and by the way, the out of area judge asked us not to ask him again as the judging was too difficult so guess we will have to find someone else!

We sincerely hope that this year’s sponsors will compete again next year and we want people to know that individuals can compete as well; not just businesses and we would welcome their rendition. Now that we know how much fun everyone had, how supportive and competitive everyone is, it will be better than ever next year.

Special Awards were given to Gary and Debbie Gorrell, Lucile Bickett, Farmers National Bank, who have done so much for us in the way of promoting the Idaho Rodeo Hall of Fame and through their generous donations we have received a printer, projector screen, purchased tables & chairs, and helped fund our student award funds, and much more.

We were very pleased that Karl Danielson and his mother Karolyn Gaines were able to again film oral histories for our second IRHF documentary. Karl was the 1st recipient of our Community Service Youth Award receiving $750 for his 250 some hours of volunteer work filming, editing and producing this film along with his mother Karolyn and Shaye Dye assisting with the music. The 2013 films can be purchased through IRHF Secretary, Charmy LeaVell (208) 539-0202 or IRHF President, Lonnie LeaVell and the 2014 films can also be pre ordered.

We are very proud that Jim Brockman of Brockman Rifles, and Jessica Brockman of Ballard Cheese, their crew cooked us a great meal of steak, homemade mac & cheese, fruit cups and dessert all from local sources! If you didn’t come to this years’ event, be sure to plan on it next year in August during the PRCA Rodeo and Fair in Gooding but get your reservations in early as there was standing room only.

This time of year fruits and vegetables are delicious, fresh from the garden or trees. The second best way to eat the produce is later after they have been canned, frozen, or dried. The good ol’ fruit is a major ingredient in the canning process. Quarts, pints, half-pints, and the misc. odd jars (jam) are in the biggest demand. A lot more canning is in pint jars today as opposed to the quarts years ago. Some of the reasons for smaller jars include smaller families, mixed schedules, single servings, better lunch boxes, less storage room, and more savings on jars.

The average price of a pint jar in the bigger stores is about 93 cents-a-piece. In the smaller stores the average price is about $1.29, while in secondhand stores they range from 30 to 60 cents each.

An older friend of mine told me I could have a few dozen pint jars from her home in Baker City, Oregon. She currently lives in Portland, Oregon. I had made plans to go see her in Portland, and on my way back, stop at Baker City and take the jars with me. The jars were to go to immediate use with some peaches and green beans.

Friday past I left Portland late in the afternoon, in fact, during rush hour. Traffic was stop and go, bumper to bumper. I think everyone had plans for the three day weekend, or they were in a hurry to go home so they could can up fresh produce (MAYBE NOT).

The only real space I had on the freeway was near The Dalles, Oregon, where I blew a front tire on my car. Glad I had a little space without a bundle of vehicles, cause I needed it. I figure when I get into the tire store, my replacement will probably be about $120, maybe more.

I rolled into Baker City about 3:00 a.m. Saturday morning after taking a little nap in Pendleton, Oregon. I took a walk-about in my friend’s house there in Baker (she’s moving to Portland) to check everything out. I found the jars she was telling me about in the fruit room. There were a few dozen pints and some jam jars crammed into a metal milk crate. I took them to the car being careful not to lock the keys to the house in the house.

With my car keys in my hand I place the crates of jars in my trunk. With the metal crate, shutting the trunk was tight. I started to leave. Where were my keys? I looked the house over and over again. I had come to the conclusion that I dropped them in the trunk with the jars.

I tried to push the lock out with a screwdriver since I had no tools.

No luck. I waited until 6:30 to call the locksmith. The locksmith arrived and we removed my seat (mind you, no tools) since my lock was messed up. The opening behind the seat was small, thus the crate could not come out, but we were able to fish the keys from the jars. The price of my goof... $80. $50 more took me home.

The next morning when I needed the jars, I couldn’t get them out of my car. I had to buy two dozen jars for immediate canning. The price was $21. So far, without the pice of the lock, my free pints are $11.29 each This is my “Cup of Tee” 277 pints short.

Although most states with legal restrictions on the movement of firewood are in the east or Midwest because of the severity of the problem in those regions, nearly all states now formally recommend limiting the movement of firewood. (For information about firewood regulations and recommendations in specific states, visit http://www.dontmovefirewood.org/map).

Although Idaho does not have a specific regulation restricting the movement of firewood within the state, the Idaho Department of Agriculture strongly advises that firewood be bought and used locally. Many visitors to Idaho live in areas under quarantine for emerald ash borer, gypsy moth, and other pests, and their accidental introduction into the state could be devastating to the Idaho environment and economy.

“We encourage everyone to help protect our country’s natural resources from invasive species,” said APHIS spokesperson Joelle Hayden.

“Taking basic steps - like not moving firewood and following Federal and State quarantines - will help keep these dangerous pests from spreading unintentionally.”
