Celebrating 30 Years

The Lincoln County Courthouse lawn will soon be full of quality Arts and Crafts, Antique Dealers, Festival Food and Great Music, with the 30th year of Shoshone Arts in the Park.

This festival is a great place for family and friends ot come together to listen to great music, eat festival food, and do some shopping for quality arts and crafts.

Shoshone Arts in the Park will be held on July 8th and 9th on the Lincoln County Courthouse Lawn located on US Hwy 93 (South Greenwood) just walking distance from the Historic downtown. Vendors travel from all over Idaho, Utah and Oregon to participate in this annual event to sell their metal and gourd art, photography, paintings, fiber art, handmade soap and so many more quality artists.

The Idaho Operation Lifesaver Trolley will be giving rides all day Saturday. Wagons rides, antique dealers the Historical Museum will be open and a delicious variety of food vendors will be on hand during the weekend.

The festival will open at 10:00 am and last till 5:00 pm for the conclusion of the event.

This year, the Music Festival will feature some great entertainment. Music will begin at 9:30 am on Saturday and 10:00 am on Sunday. Rodeo Season Begins

The rodeo season for our area kicked off with the Days of the Old West Rodeo in Hailey (July 2-4). This Friday and Saturday excape a bit of the heat and head on up to Fairfield.

The C Me Later Arena, located on the west side of Fairfield, will host the 2017 Camas County Rodeo on July 7th and 8th starting at 6:00 p.m. each evening. Along with all your favorite rodeo events, this rodeo features Hometown Bullriding (call

539-3565 if you think you’re brave enough). Admission is $8 (under 8 Free). Slack events will be held on Saturday at

10 a.m. (ICA, IPRA, Pro-West) Next weekend, the Atomic Days Rodeo will be held in Arco, Idaho, on July 14th and 15th. Part of Arco’s Atomic Days, this year marks Butte County’s 100th year. Rodeo events will begin at 7:30 p.m. each evening. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children 8 & under (CPRA, IPRA) The 2017 Lincoln County Rodeo & Rodeo will be held July 22th and 29th at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds in Shoshone, Idaho. Junior Rodeo will be held on Saturday, July 22, and the Ranch Rodeo on Wednesday, July 26th. IMPRA Rodeo events will be held on July 27th & 28th beginning at 8:00 p.m. each evening. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children 12 & under. (ICA, IPRA) The 2017 Jerome County Fair and Rodeo will be held August 8th through August 12th in Jerome, Idaho. Rodeo events on the 8th, 9th & 10th. Steve Cody and Jeff Gore will be in Fairfield beginning Sunday, July 9th, with Foothills Baptist Church (123 Poplar Avenue). Steve Cody has been preaching revivals and tent meetings for 35 years.

Jeff Gore is a Texas cowboy who performs cowboy songs and poetry as well as Christian music.

Sunday service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, the revival meetings will be at 7 p.m. followed by snacks and fellowship around the campfire. On Monday at 6:00 p.m. come enjoy a Hamburger Fry. Be sure to bring your lawn chairs and join the worship under the tent.

VBS for children will be held Monday through Wednesday from 9:30 to noon with director Bob Whitchurch. Kids will have lots of fun activities with this year’s theme: The National Parks.

To have a chance at winning a hunt of a lifetime, hunters have until August 10 to enter the second Super Hunt drawing.

Winners can participate in any open hunt in the state for deer, elk, pronghorn or moose with a tag for that species, including general hunts and controlled hunts. Super Hunt tags are in addition to other tags, meaning if you draw a controlled hunt tag or purchase a general season tag, you can still participate in these hunts as well as the Super Hunt.

Money raised by the Super Hunt drawings supports hunters and anglers access to private lands through the Access Yes! program. This program is designed to improve access to or across private land to public land by compensating willing landowners.

Super Hunt entries are $6 each and Super Hunt Combo entries are $20 each. No license is needed to enter either drawing, and there is no limit on the number of times a person can apply.

Hunters may enter the drawings at license vendors, Fish and Game offices, by calling 800554-8685 or online at https://idfg.idaho.gov/ superhunt. Entries can also be mailed to Fish and Game License Section, P.O. Box 25, Boise, ID 83707. Orders must be received at Fish and Game no later than August 10, with winners to be notified by August 15.

Upon entering a demolition derby race, I would many times find a car that wasn’t painted up or had very few sponsors painted on it. This was a perfect time to confuse the other derby operators by having more cars in the field. Even more so, it was a perfect opportunity to get out the ol’ spray paint can, paint brush, paint roller, or the set of many colored permanent markers.

My crew cringed every time I would reach into my paint supply. “What is he up to now?” would be their thoughts. I just think they were halting an artist in progress. My logo to put on a derby car was pretty easily drawn. With my set of multi-colored markers, I could just about coordinate any combination I needed.

While in Tennessee preparing the last minute details for my brother’s wedding, a couple of shepherd hooks needed to be painted. My brother immediately said, “Brother Tee can paint those up!” That would be no problem to do and I would be glad to paint them up.

But... they were going to allow me to use paint? Maybe they felt safe because I had no access to markers.

Cousins Edwin Binney and Harold C. Smith probably didn’t have the distrust factor like me when they created the Crayola Crayon Company in 1903. They had eight basic colors; blue, black, brown, green, orange, red, yellow, and violet. By 1949 there were 39 colors.

sitive. Midnight Blue was chosen to help in coloring the “Iron Curtain.” Also introduced in 1958 with 15 other colors was Indian Red, which was named for a pigment originating in India. Crayola feared children would see it as a reference to native American skin color and in 1999 the red was changed to Chestnut. That color also came with a disclaimer, “crayons should not be roasted over an open fire.”

In 1962 the color “Flesh” was changed to “Peach.” Crayola voluntarily changed the color to avoid legal issues. They were trying to encourage the world not to see things in Peach and Black. 1990 forced the retirement of Blue Gray, Green Blue, Lemon Yellow, Maize, Orange Red, Raw Amber, and Violet Blue. A few replacements were Cerulean, Fuchsia, and Dandelion.

In 2003 - their 100th birthday - colors such as Blizzard Blue, Magic Mint, Teal Blue, and Mulberry were replaced with Inchworm, Jazzerberry, Jam, Mango Tango, and Wild Blue Yonder. They were voted in by kindergartners.

It’s pretty obvious that the Crayola Company hadn’t run across my name. We may of had some different colors yet. I guess it will be a few days before my brother finds out I wrote my name in his barn.

Sharon Mae Plowman

Sharon Mae Plowman, 74, a resident of Wendell, passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center in Twin Falls.

Sharon was born on December 27, 1942 in Twin Falls, Idaho, the daughter of Maurice and Frieda Melton. Sharon was raised and educated in Twin Falls. She then began her career as a hair dresser working in various beauty shops in Idaho. She married Darrell Plowman and they made their home in Wendell.

She is survived by: her husband, Darrell Plowman; a daughter, Tina Young; four grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Peggy.

No funeral services will be held. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Demaray Funeral Service - Wendell Chapel.

ITD Mowing Along Area Highways To Reduce Wildfire Fuel

As wildfire season begins, the Idaho Transportation Department will begin mowing areas of roadside through at least two stretches of highway that are of greatest risk for rangeland fires and lie in critical habitat zones. In the Magic Valley, ITD is following the lead of a similar program along Interstate 84 through the Mountain Home and Boise areas that was successful.

Mowing began this week along Idaho 75 between Shoshone and the U.S. 20 junction (Timmerman Hill). The impact to traffic will be minimal and the work supports the mission of ITD to promote safe, uninterrupted travel and benefit the general public through the reduced threat of wildfire.

ITD usually mows about 12 feet from the edge of the roadway along most highway corridors, but committed to mowing up to 15 feet from roadway edge along Idaho 75 in southern Blaine County and U.S. 93 in southern Twin

Falls County. Mowing focuses on areas traversing critical sage-grouse habitat. Additional areas of highway right of way could be added as resources allow.

ITD received a fire-mitigation grant from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Twin Falls District to assist in the reduction of hazardous fuels along Idaho highways. The program seeks to reduce or eliminate the ignition and spread of wildfire along roadsides, protect natural resources, and reduce the risk of wildfire to communities and firefighters.

ITD received a grant from the BLM to perform similar work through the fire-prone areas of Elmore and eastern Ada Counties.

With the approved grant, ITD purchased a 15-foot mower deck and will lease a tractor to accommodate the additional work. The initial grant application was for $55,000 to be reimbursed to ITD over a two-year period.

Washington, D.C. - Idaho Congressman Simpson praised the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Army Corps of Engineers proposed rule to repeal the “waters of the United States” (WOTUS) definition that was submitted by the previous Administration. Today’s proposed rule withdraws WOTUS and allows for a rewrite of the definition, which will provide regulatory certainty for farmers, ranchers, local municipalities, and others who have voiced concerns with WOTUS. “I applaud the Administration for taking this important step to provide Idahoans with regulatory relief,” said Simpson. “The WOTUS rule from the previous Administration blatantly overreached into our lives in the West, which is why I fought this massive expansion of federal jurisdiction since day one. I am pleased this Administration recognizes the WOTUS rule is unworkable and way beyond the scope of the federal government.”

The controversial rule would have expanded the definition of “waters of the United States” and as a result, federal regulation and permitting under the Clean Water Act. The rule, as written, could apply to virtually all water, including ground water.

States currently regulate non-navigable water.

Congressman Simpson has been a leader on this issue, currently chairing the appropriations subcommittee overseeing the budget for the US Army Corps of Engineers and is a member of the subcommittee overseeing the budget for the EPA. In those roles, he has authored language passed by the House that would prevent the EPA and the US Army Corps of Engineers from expanding their regulatory jurisdiction under the Clean Water Act. In fact, Congressman Simpson today released his Energy and Water Appropriations legislation, which includes language authorizing the Administrator of the EPA and the Corps to withdraw the WOTUS rule.

“With the introduction of my Energy and Water bill today - alongside the proposed withdrawal of the rule itself – two branches of government are sending a clear message to the American people that the federal government must defer to the authority of States to regulate state waters.”
