Celebrate Independence Day

On the 4th of July, 1776, 56 men from 13 colonies adopted the text of the Declaration of Independence, and United States of America was born. The official document wasn't signed until around the first of August due to the lengthy process of editing and producing a final handwritten copy with space for the signatures. Along with the 27 official grievances against King George III which stated why thirteen colonies were no longer subject to British colonial rule, there was a remarkable statement about who we are and our origins:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." While the last 250 years have been filled successes, failures, and political strife, we need to remember those words. Though they were written by imperfect men, who's words have often been twisted to mean something that was never intended, those words are nevertheless true. As we gather together in celebration, remember... the Declaration of Independence is a high and lofty idea that must be diligently pursued and protected by all of us.

This Friday, June 30th, the Hagerman Valley Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring an evening of Patriotic Themed music and Fireworks - Free of charge in the Hagerman City Park. The event will include food vendors, lots of fun activities, and a flag retirement Ceremony in the city park beginning at 6:30 p.m.

This Saturday, July 1st, Wendell is hosting a Independence Day Parade. Any and all entries are welcome (no fee) with the line-up starting at 3:30 at the Jim Prince Memorial Park. Beginning at 4:30, the parade will travel down South Boise Street to Main Street, then head to the high school for the Simerly’s Fireworks Extravaganza event. Live music, entertainment and food vendors will be on hand at 6:00 p.m. Fireworks will begin at dark.

On July 4th (Tuesday) the City of Bliss invites everyone to their celebration. There will be mud volleyball, vendors, events for kids, bounce houses, and a parade at 4 p.m. The Bliss Fire District will be hosting their annual barbecue and raffle at the fire station from 5-7:30 p.m. Fireworks will start at dusk.

In Fairfield, the Camas of Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the 4th of July Fireworks show, thanks to generous community contributions from: City of Fairfield, American Legion Post #19, Iron Mountain Inn, Ann & Jamie Peterson, Darcy Fuglevand, Idaho Power, Simon Farms, Leonard & Celia Brown, The Wrangler, and the Camas Creek Country Store. There will also be a Community Potluck BBQ in the city park starting at 5:00 p.m. Please bring a side dish or dessert.

In Shoshone, the Lincoln County Chamber is hosting a Community Potluck at the Ballpark Pocket Park (S Carmen & C Street) at 6:00 p.m. Bring a side dish or dessert - hot dogs & hamburgers will be provided. And... be prepared for the Cake Auction at 7:00 p.m.

Community Health Academy

Fourteen Idaho cities are participating in the Community Health Academy, a Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation for Health program for mayors and city officials that helps them learn and understand the city’s important role in building healthy communities.

Community Health Academy is a five-month learning collaborative that brings together leaders from Idaho cities to learn from local and national experts, collaborate with each other, and activate a program or project that improves the health of their community. Each city will earn a $20,000 grant upon completion of the program.

The cities participating in the academy are Ammon, Blackfoot, Buhl, Dayton, Gooding, Hazelton, Lapwai, Mountain Home, Parma, Post Falls, Pocatello, Stanley, St. Anthony and Tetonia. This year’s academy is the largest cohort, and the expansion was made possible by a donation to the Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation for Health by national philanthropist MacKenzie Scott.

The academy launched Friday and will include monthly sessions through October. The academy uses a hybrid model with sessions done in person and virtually. Topics covered include childcare, civility, early education, communications and branding, designing health communities, food systems, and housing.

“Community Health Academy is one of our most impactful programs because most mayors and elected officials learn how their actions can help build healthy communities,” said Courtney Frost, senior program officer for the Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation for Health. “The academy includes grant funding, so cities will have the resources to launch a project or program that will improve the health of communities in Idaho.”

Community Health Academy has been offered by the Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation for Health since 2017. There have been 24 Idaho communities that have attended the previous five cohorts of the academy.

Richfield Ranch Rodeo

Grab your cowboy/cowgirl friends and put together a team for the Ranch Rodeo on July 8th. Registration is at 10 a.m. with events starting at noon. American Legion Baseball

American Legion baseball started its third year in Gooding under the leadership of coaches Cameron Knigge, Joel Gonzales, Codie Martin and Dennis Chandler. New this year is a second team which allows more opportunities for young athletes to play.

So far this year, the B team has played Declo, Buhl, Salmon, Kimberly, Wood River and Burley. The A team has played the Twin Falls Cowboys, Twin Falls Redhawks, Burley, Jerome, Mountain Home and Kimberly.

On June 8-10 the Legion A team participated in a wood bat tournament in Burley, and on July 7-10 they will compete in the Clancy Ellis Tournament at Harris Field (home of the NAIA World Series) at Lewis Clark State College (LCSC).

The Legion coaches are thankful to the program sponsor: Gooding American Legion Post #30, Perry Byam with James Woodward, the Post Adjutant.

Re-defining Noxious: Russian Knapweed

One of the first knapweed species to emerge in the spring is Russian knapweed. This plant is unique in that it is the only knapweed with black roots-making it easy to identify. This plant will take over entire areas, killing all other vegetation. Russian knapweed is aggressively growing in Gooding and Lincoln counties and if we are not vigilant it will try to establish itself in Camas county. Here is what you need to look for.

Russian knapweed is a perennial plant that reproduces mainly by creeping roots. In addition, a single plant is capable of producing more than 1,200 seeds. These seeds vary in color from gray to ivory and are produced from August through September. The erect stems are openly branched and typically 45 to 90 cm tall. The leaves are oblong on the upper part of the plant and become deeply lobed tall. The leaves are oblong on the upper part of the plant and become deeply lobed the closer they are to the root crown. Russian knapweed produces many flowers which range in color from pink to blue. Flowering typically begins in June and continues through september. Russian knapweed forms dense infestations across habitat types in the arid West. It is a significant pest of rangelands, roadsides, waste areas, and can invade grain and other crops.

In the following five years after initial release of insects,, the bug crew will monitor the insectory area in early spring when young Russian knapweed ripening shoots are the most susceptible to gall formation. Stands infested by Jaapiella ivannikovi (a gall midge) will be inspected for a reduction in vigor and biomass as well as reductions in stand density and extent. Monitoring data will be used to determine whether site conditions are suitable for Jaapiella ivannikova insectories. If you happen upon an infestation of Russian knapweed, it is imperative that you take action. Pull these plants if they are on your own property, if it is public land, please call Terry Lee (208-764-3512) at the Camas County Weed Department and he can determine the best path forward. It just might be that the Camas Bug Crew may be able to use biological control insects to control the infestation.

obituary Bill Snapp

The family of Bill Snapp is sad to announce that he passed away quietly in his sleep surrounded by loved ones, on Saturday, June 17, 2023, in Hagerman, Idaho, at the age of 92.

Bill was the youngest of five children of Emmet and Belle Siddoway Snapp, and was born in Rupert, Idaho, on April 30, 1931.

Bill attended schools in Rupert, Idaho; Compton, California; then Burley and Twin Falls, Idaho, where he graduated from Twin Falls High School in 1949. Bill graduated with his Bachelors' Degree and Teacher Certifications in 1957.

After college, Bill spent 34 years teaching in Hagerman, from 1957 to 1991. His teaching assignments varied from social studies, to math, to health, to 5th Grade (his favorite). He always said the best part of teaching was "the Kids!"

In 1963, Bill's life was enriched by meeting Joyce Mesler, which led to marriage on August 19, 1964, in Logan, Utah. Their first home together, however, was a little cabin by the river back in Hagerman. They were disappointed that they were never able to have children. They did have dogs and cats, and watched over all their pets with care and delight. They had fifty-eight years enjoying one another before Joyce died less than two months ago.

Bill found many joys in life: certainly Joyce, but also teaching, family, a good book with a little history in it, a conversation with friends, the Snake River Grill for breakfast, a good boat, and the thrill of having a fish hit the lure!

Bill is survived by his sister-in-law - Ardena Snapp (Rupert); nieces - Sheryl Riding (West Jordan, Utah); Susan Hunsaker (Rigby); nephews - Jay Snapp (Springville, Utah); Gary Craner (Boise); Calvin Craner (Idaho Falls); Steven Snapp (Bellevue), and Larry Snapp (Denver, Colorado).

Besides his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife – Joyce; his sisters - Nan Craner and Ina Anderson; and his brothers - Robert Snapp and Gene Snapp.

Special appreciation is extended to all those who loved and cared for Bill, especially Craig Laughlin, Rosario and Roman Martinez, Jennifer Cortez, Robin and Pat Windes, Suzanne Perron, Kathy Laughlin, and the entire staff of Snake River Grill.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 26, 2023, at the Community Church in Hagerman, Idaho. Burial followed at the Hagerman Cemetery.

obituarY

Mona Marie Baucum

Mona Marie Baucum, 77, died June 20, 2023, at home in Gooding, Idaho surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Marie was born August 21, 1945 in Blackfoot, Idaho. The daughter of Ollie Wilbur Sova and Nellie Hahn Sova, she was the middle child out of five siblings. She lived in Rockford, ID before moving to Salmon, ID in 1954. She lived there until she left for college in Pasadena, CA. Marie later ended up living in Salt Lake City where she met her husband, Walter Baucum. They married July 2, 1976, and lived briefly in Rock Springs and Worland, Wyoming, before moving to Gooding, Idaho.

Marie became a 4-H volunteer when her two daughters were old enough to become 4-H members. She enjoyed teaching her daughters and their friends how to cook, sew, knit, crochet and many other projects.

She worked as a substitute teacher in the Gooding School District for several years where her services were in high demand with the teachers. Later, Marie worked in the Gooding County Extension Office with the 4-H program. She worked there for 23 years before retiring in 2011. Working with the 4-H program was so much more than just a job for Marie. It was an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of so many adults and youth in Gooding County. She took her job seriously and tried to make their program the best it could be.

After retiring, Marie returned to volunteering. She could be found reading with first grade students, helping with spring break sewing classes and projects, donating her skills and services to Hagerman Greenhouse, as well as judging at fair time.

Marie enjoyed living in Idaho. One of her favorite things to do was camp and hike in the Sawtooth Mountains. She loved cooking, sewing, knitting, crocheting, quilting, and working on her genealogy. She earned her Master Gardener certification through the University of Idaho Extension's Idaho Master Gardener Program. She helped serve the community with her knowledge and skills. She loved spending time in her yard and garden.

Marie was an avid reader and was always happy to share with anyone who asked what book she was currently reading. In recent years she was an active member of a local book club and participated in various reading programs through the library.

Marie was a scrapbooker and card maker. She enjoyed participating in local scrapbooking groups and retreats with her friends.

Marie is survived by her loving daughters - Christine (James) DiLella of Telford, PA. and Catherine Amundson of Santa Maria, California; a sister - Lavada (Bob) Roufs of Cohassat, Minnesota; a brother - Craig (Sandy) Sova of Potlatch, Idaho; her cherished grandchildren - grandson, Kevin Amundson; and granddaughters - Jenna Amundson, Milan DiLella and Paloma DiLella; and many extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her husband - Walter Baucum; her parents; and brothers - Donald Sova and Bruce Sova.

Marie touched the lives of many people. She was a very caring person who spread joy and happiness wherever she went. Her greatest joy in life became spending time with her grandchildren. They were very near and dear to her heart.

The family would like to thank everyone for the cards, flowers and kindness during the last few weeks. Your support at this difficult time was very much appreciated and of great comfort to all of us. The family also wishes to thank the staff, caregivers, who took such great care of her. Lastly, all of her dear friends in the Gooding, Idaho area whose kindness is most truly appreciated and will long be remembered.

At Marie's request, no funeral or memorial service will be held. She was blessed with the opportunity to say goodbye to many friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, please plant a flower, bush, or tree in her memory.

Roddy Lee Adams

Our precious dad, Roddy Lee Adams, age 75, of Shoshone, Idaho, passed away peacefully at his home on June 21, 2023, surrounded by his family. Mom and Dad are in Heaven and together again.

Roddy was born on July 11, 1947 in Albion, Idaho, to Betty Satchwell Adams and Horace Lyle Adams.

Roddy married Cheryl Lynn Eckles, the love of his life on July 29, 1966. They had three children - Tammy, Cory, and Chad.

Roddy worked very hard from early childhood doing a man's work. As a young adult he held meaningful jobs working for Bob Esterbrook, Faye "Benny" Benjamin, and the meat packing plant in Gooding.

On January 1, 1977 Dad made his dream come true and bought the Adams Family dairy farm. Mom and Dad soon would grow the dairy into what is known today as Hi-Line Farms. Some of Roddy's favorite things were his horse Colena in the late 50's, and his fastback Mustang that he courted Mom in. He and Mom bought a Honda Gold Wing in a beautiful red color, he loved his GTOs and his sparkling blue fleck water ski boat with white interior. Soon, snowmobiles came along and that passion remains in the family to this day.

Dad was one of the hardest working, honest, and generous people I have ever known. He was a protector, a great husband, father, grandpa, brother, and friend. He was the life of the party and was very proud and grateful of his family.

Some of the sayings he was known for will always remain important and funny: Right is right, and wrong is wrong TCB, Taking Care of Business Oh hell By God Literally! Well, Duh If you knew him you definitely heard these...Literally!

Roddy is survived by his three children - Tammy Nettinga (Aaron Ames) of Rockaway Beach, Oregon, Cory Adams of Shoshone, Chad Adams (Rhonda) of Shoshone; and sisters - Lyrene Warren (Albert Lockwood) of Twin Falls and Delila Williams (Scott) of May, Idaho. He was preceded in death by: his wife - Cheryl Adams; his parents - Betty and Lyle Adams; and his sister - Sandra Strickland.

A celebration of life for Roddy will be held on Saturday, July 1, 2023 at 11:00 am at the Gooding Basque Center in Gooding.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING OF IDAHO HEALTH FACILITIES AUTHORITY

Please take notice that Christian Anderson, Executive Director of the Idaho Health Facilities Authority, an independent public body corporate and politic under Idaho law (the “Authority”), or his designee, will hold a public hearing for purposes of federal tax law with respect to the proposed tax-exempt issuance by the Authority of its Idaho Health Facilities Authority Revenue Bonds, Series 2023 (North Canyon Medical Center Project) (the “Series 2023 Bonds”) in one or more series in an aggregate principal amount not to exceed $50,000,000.

North Canyon Medical Center, Inc. is a nonprofit corporation duly incorporated and validly existing under the laws of the State of Idaho (the “Corporation”). The proceeds of sale of the Series 2023 Bonds will be loaned to the Corporation and will be used, with certain other moneys of the Corporation, to (i) refinance all or a portion of a Promissory Note dated September 5, 2019, made by the Corporation in favor of Farmers Bank, in the approximate amount of $1,500,000 (the “Farmers Note”), (ii) refinance three separate permanent loans from the United States Department of Agriculture acting through the United States Department of Agriculture–Rural Development, in the approximate amount of $23,000,000 (the “USDA Direct Loans”), (iii) finance the acquisition, construction, and equipping of a new medical clinic to be located at 1674 Canyon Plaza Drive, Twin Falls, Idaho 83301 (the “Twin Falls Clinic”) in the approximate amount of $23,000,000, (iv) fund all or a portion of a debt service reserve fund for the Series 2023 Bonds, if deemed necessary or desirable by the Authority or the Corporation; (v) pay capitalized interest on the Series 2023 Bonds, if deemed necessary or desirable by the Authority or the Corporation; and (vi) pay all or a portion of the costs relating to the issuance of the Series 2023 Bonds.

The Farmers Note financed the costs of acquisition, construction, installation and equipping of a healthcare clinic located at 718 US-30, Buhl, Idaho, 83316 (the “Buhl Clinic”).

The USDA Direct Loans financed the costs of acquisition, construction, installation and equipping of healthcare facilities located at 267 North Canyon Drive, Gooding, Idaho 83330 (the “Hospital”).

The Buhl Clinic, the Hospital and the Twin Falls Clinic are or will be owned and operated by the Corporation.

The hearing will take place on July 5, 2023 at 10:30 A.M. MST, and will be held at the Idaho Health Facilities Authority, located at 1087 W River St., Ste. 250, Boise, ID 83702. For those wishing to participate electronically, a Zoom link and telephone number will be listed on the Authority’s website at https://www.idhfa.org/. Interested persons wishing to express their views on the issuance of such Series 2023 Bonds or on the nature and location of the facilities proposed to be financed and refinanced by such Series 2023 Bonds will be given an opportunity to do so at the public hearing or may, prior to the time of the hearing, submit written comments to Christian Anderson, Executive Director, Idaho Health Facilities Authority. PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE ORDINANCE TO ALLOW POULTRY IN THE CITY LIMITS

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Shoshone City Council will hold a Public Hearing on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall, 207 S. Rail St. W. This hearing is to accept public comment, written or oral, on a proposed Ordinance to allow poultry (chickens and rabbits) within the City of Shoshone city limits. Copies of this ordinance may be reviewed at Shoshone City Hall at 207 S Rail St. West, Shoshone, Idaho.

If you would like to make a comment on the proposed ordinance, please plan to attend the hearing.
