Wendell Opens the Hub City Park
Just one year ago, the City of Wendell began the construction of a new city park on the west side of town, just across the street from the cemetery at the south end of Hagerman Street. Last Friday, Mayor Rebecca Vipperman with the help from a passel of kids from the community held a ribbon cutting for the Hub City Park.
With the help of a Community Project Grant from from Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation for Health, the City of Wendell transformed just over 7 acres into a great little playground. The park incorporates natural elements into a traditional playground with splash pad, large boulders, an embankment slide, and easy to access pathways throughout the park.

The goal of the Hub City Park is to encourage natural play by providing a place for kids to dig dirt, stack logs, hang from ropes, and use their imagination to connect with the natural world. And... of course, there are plenty of places for adults to sit and enjoy a bit of quiet, or to have a family picnic.
Let the Fireworks Begin

This weekend, Wendell and Hagerman will be celebrating Independance Day will fun events for young and old, and everyone inbetween.
Recounts Confirm Accuracy of Idaho Elections
After the May Primary Election, recounts of election results were conducted in several Idaho counties last week. In addition to the post-election audits, the recounts serve as a measure to verify election night results. In each recount, the outcome remained the same as that of the election night results.
Notably, the recount outcome in the District 30 Representative B race was consistent with the initial election night outcome, with a difference of four votes between the candidates. The recount conducted in Butte County showed a shift of two votes, with Fuhriman gaining a vote and Young losing a vote. District 30 encompasses Butte and Bingham Counties.
Recounts were also conducted in three precinct committeeman races and a school levy ballot measure in Canyon County, a county commissioner race in Power County, two precinct committeeman races in Twin Falls County, a school levy ballot measure in Owyhee County, and a county commissioner race in Butte County. Recounts in the Butte County commissioner race and the Owyhee school levy ballot measure also saw small shifts that did not affect the race outcomes. The deadline to request a recount was June 17 for local races and measures and is June 25 for state races.
For counties utilizing machine tabulation, recounts began with a hand count of a sampling of the ballots cast in the race, followed by a machine recount of the same ballots. Machines undergo a logic and accuracy test before tabulating the ballots.

On Friday, June 28th, the 25th Army Band of Idaho will fill the air with the patriotic sound of Freedom at the Hagerman City Park. The evening of fun begins at 6:30 p.m. with music, food vendors, a flag retirement ceremony, and of course... Fireworks! Bring your lawn chairs and your friends. Sponsored by the Hagerman Valley Chamber of Commerce. Wendell will start their celebration on Saturday, June 29th with a Community Breakfast at the city park from 8 to 10, followed by an Independance Day Parade. Line up for participants is 3:30 at Jim Prince Field (1st Avenue & Boise Street) and the parade will travel along Main Street from Boise Street to the Wendell High School beginning at 4:30. To register, email mayor@wendell.id.gov. The Simerly's 4th of July Fireworks Extravaganza will be held at the football field from 6:30 to 10:30. The celebration will include lots of food vendors, a Redneck Car Show, a mini train, bounce houses, and live music by EllieMae from 7 to 9:30. Fireworks will begin at 10:00.
Phil McGrane, Idaho Secretary of State, stated, "The recount process over the past week, along with the post-election audits, has reaffirmed that Idaho elections are accurate, secure, and transparent. Seeing the results stand in all these instances is reflective of the good work being done. I am grateful to county clerks and elections offices in Idaho who work to ensure every vote counts."

Training Day
by Camas Bug Crew
June 11th marked the official start for Southern Idaho Biological Control (SIBC). Although SIBC is the official name, most people know this crew as the Bug Crew. There are currently six crews operating in southern Idaho. These include: Blaine, Camas, Lincoln, Jerome,Gooding,Twin Falls. In total there were thirty teenagers and five supervisors in attendance.

The day began with introductions by Terry Ruby, the executive director of Southern Idaho Biological Control. Later, Becky Frieberg, operations officer, went over crew assignments, introduced new members on the crews, and went over safety protocols.
This presentation was followed by a U.S Department of Forest Service Division of Forest Health, who went over the different species of insects we would be working with this summer. She went over the impact our insects could have on invasive species in South Central Idaho. The classroom portion was finished by Joey Milan from the Bureau of Land Management Biological Control Division. Joey helped the crews understand the phenology of invasive species and their insect hosts so that we can time our release of insects on invasive infestations.
It was finally time for lunch! Eric McHan, one of the supervisors, provided homemade rootbeer to complement the lunches we bought. Next, it was time to head out into the field for some practical experience. Each crew took a turn practicing monitoring data and insect counts. We ended the training by going over the field safety protocols once again. One of the participants, Emerie Smith, had this to say about her day in training “I heard a lot of new information at the training, but it was a lot to remember. Even though I am forgetful at times I have my other crew members and a supervisor to help me out when I need it. The rootbeer was also very good.”

DISCHARGING FIREWORKS!
Fireworks are a lot of fun but... they can be dangerous! Every year people suffer burns, sometimes minor, sometimes serious. For the individuals setting off the big displays (usually our volunteer firefighters), the level of danger is much higher.
In order to reduce the posibility of accidents for our volunteer firefighters, Mayor Terry Lee (Fairfield) wishes to remind people that...
"No person shall discharge or set off any rocket, cracker, roman candle, fire wheel, cannon, anvil, bomb, giant powder or any other explosive or other fireworks within the limits of the city, except by the written permission of the mayor, who is hereby authorized to designate a time and place when and where the same may be done." - City Code 4-3-4
Under the recommendation of Fairfield City Fire Department and to ensure Safe & Sane Fireworks, no aerial fireworks shall be discharged in Fairfield from noon to 11 p.m. on July 4th, 2024, from the west side of football field to 2nd Street, and from Camas Ave. to the alley between Sage and Alturas.
Thank you for helping keep our Independance Day celebration Safe & Sane... Mayor Terry Lee

obituaries
Richard Glen Cone
Richard Glen Cone, 73 of Gooding, passed away on June 18, 2024, after an extended battle with Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS).

Richard was born in Liberal, Kansas to Henry and Ruby Cone on July 15th, 1950. He quickly found a love for all things agriculture and was active in 4-H and FFA throughout his youth. Rich was proud of his American Farmer Degree and was a lifelong supporter of both organizations. Rich attended Washington State University, where he obtained a degree in Agricultural Business, and if they could, have given him a minor in Redneck Engineering. If you knew Rich, he was your go-to guy for figuring out how to get things done. Rich settled in the Magic Valley for the rest of his years, but he always said Gooding was home.
Rich wore many professional hats in his life. He was a banker, custom hay farmer, hay broker, salesman, trucker, mechanic, etc. If it was AG related, he probably did it. You also rarely ever saw Rich without his dog. As much as he loved working the land, he enjoyed doing it with a 4-legged companion. His pets were often as well-known as him. When he would travel the road on tracking hay, he had stops where his dog would go in and secure a room for him. This was one of his favorite stories to tell.
During the final years of Rich's life, he added another hat to his professional life, storyteller. Not other people's stories, but his own. As people would visit Rich, he would often recount many of his life adventures with them. The common take away from all the people who spent time with him was that he had done so many things.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents Henry and Ruby Cone and his brother David Cone. Richard was survived by his daughter Kelsey (Jeffery) Schulz, significant other Marjorie Brockman, sister Donna (David) Dahlstrom, sister Sharon (Kevin) Hanson, brother Joe (Kathy) Cone, sister Kathryn Marshall, his three grand-daughters Ruby, Kennedy and Keely Schulz and many nieces/nephews.
A graveside services for Richard will be held at the Elmwood Cemetery in Gooding on July 2nd, at 9:30 a.m. A memorial service will be held at Rosenau Funeral home in Twin Falls on July 2, 2024, at 1 p.m. with a gathering to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any FFA chapter or the Gooding FFA chapter.
A special and heartfelt thank you to all the compassionate and loving staff at Bridgeview Skilled Nursing and Hospice Visions for their exceptional care and support of Richard.
Virginia Marie Monroe
Virginia Marie Monroe, 93, a resident of Shoshone, passed away on Monday, June 10, 2024 at her home in Shoshone. Virginia Marie (Shaffer) Monroe turned 41 on June 10, 2024. If you knew her then you knew.
Virginia was born to Carrie and Frank Shaffer at their home on July 4, 1931. Growing up she believed that everyone celebrated her birthday with fireworks only to find out that it wasn’t the exact truth, but that didn’t stop her from telling everyone the latter.
Virginia grew up in Shoshone and for the first 10 years of her life she was an only child. Her dad used to say “She was the first, the worst, the best and the last.” Well, that was all true until the birth of her brother, John in 1941.

She graduated in 1949 from Shoshone High School. She went and lived/worked in a few different places (Boise, California, Utah and Montana) while working for Pacific Bell as a telephone operator. Idaho was always home though, especially Shoshone and when it called her back, she went to work at the McFall Hotel and also at the Manhattan Cafe.
On Halloween 1952 she went on a double date where she met Dale Monroe. The two had whirlwind courting and decided on May 4, 1953, to drive down with another couple and get hitched down in Elko, Nevada. Dale worked for the Idaho Transportation Dept. and because of his job it took the couple to live in places where a job(s) needed to be accomplished. In 1957 they were back and settled in Shoshone and welcomed twin boys Dale Franklin (Frank) and James Blake (Jim) Monroe.
Virginia was a very active lady and enjoyed a plethora of activities (camping, arrowhead hunting, gardening, knitting/crocheting, reading and sports watching to name a few). With her being such a huge sports fan; especially baseball; the “greatest” home-run(s) she ever came across was when her grand girls slid into home plate. Like other sports Virginia knew and watched, life earned her extra innings for her with the addition of her great grandchildren. And if that wasn't an all-star play, she got one more grand-slam with a bonus of a great great granddaughter. Virginia lived a very full and rich life.
Virginia is survived by her son Jim (Laurel) Monroe; her granddaughters -Jen (Casey) McCabe, Christina Monroe, Chelse (Lyden) Christensen; her great grandchildren - Kellin Short, Kaiden Short-Alexander, Kiran McCabe, Jaelyn McCabe, Tiryon Christensen, Annie Christensen; also, her great, great grand-daughter - Eskadilla Randall-Short.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Frank; her husband, Dale; and her brother John. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, June 29, 2024 at the First Baptist Church in Shoshone, Idaho. Burial will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a contribution can be made to the First Baptist Church or a charity of your choice. Condolences, memories and photos can be shared with the family by following the obituary link at www.demarayfuneralservice.com

R Wendell Johnson
R Wendell Johnson, at 87 years old, passed peacefully on June 12, 2024, entering the Great Pasture to push a big herd of cows and rush on to the arena to announce the Granddaddy of Them All, as Rod caught steers and Kathryn timed beside him!

Wendell was larger-than-life and he made the Energizer Bunny look slow. He was always on the go, up before dawn, running the ranches, heading to one of a multitude of board meetings, then on to announce a rodeo, parade or auction for a fund raiser. Wendell never met a stranger and he absolutely loved kids, evidenced by his passion for announcing three generations of high school rodeo athletes. He was gritty, tough, kind and encouraging to all, always up for an adventure. Wendell's rodeo life started during the time of open range, work horses, haying and thrashing crews and steam engines. At a young age, he enjoyed working for a rodeo producer, gathering stock. He discovered that his "butt was too round" to ride rough stock but it never dampened his enthusiasm for the sport of rodeo. In those days, the arena consisted of cars parked in a circle and when an announcer failed to show, Wendell stepped into that role, starting a lifetime of announcing. That included the Outlaw Day Rodeo for forty-five years, High School rodeo at the district and state level for thirty-five years, chariot races for Silver Creek, at Idaho State Finals and in Wells, Nevada, the All Indian Rodeo for four years in four locations, a multitude of junior rodeos, pig wrestlings, demolition derbies, mud bogs and many parades. He enjoyed being the head announcer at Ketchum's Wagon days for fifteen years and loved helping the Big Hitch through town. Along with all the other fun, Wendell team sorted, jamboreed, chariot raced and at one time put together a Shetland bucking horse string.
In additional to announcing and ranching, Wendell held many jobs. He sold real estate, did farm and ranch appraisals, Assistant Manager for Big Wood Canal Company, Lincoln County Assessor, Lincoln County Planning & Zoning Administrator and Richfield P&Z Chairman, Mid Snake Water Resource Commission, operated two power plants and managed two other ranching operations. He was proud of a thirty-one-year association with Big Wood Canal Company and American Falls Reservoir District No. 2. He served on the Committee of Nine to build the American Falls Reservoir where he testified before congress to facilitate the project. He was inducted into the Idaho Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2011, was a longtime director of District 5 High School Rodeo and a founding member of the Richfield Riding Club. Wendell is survived by his wife, Cathy Gilbert; brother, Frank [Vicky] Johnson; daughter, Brenda [Doug] Butler; step-daughter, Acee [Mitch] Lucero; eight grandkids; ten great-grandkids; and two great great grandkids.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Kathryn; sister, Faye Chatfield; son, Rod Johnson; and many special relatives.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Idaho State High School Rodeo Scholarship Fund, % Luann Swainston, Box 163, Richfield, Idaho 83349.
A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at 10 a.m. at the Gooding Pro Rodeo Arena at the Gooding Fairgrounds with lunch to follow.
