News Cloud Seeding In Idaho

Wood River Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) will be at the Fairfield City Council this Thursday, June 11th, to make a presentation regarding South Central Idaho’s Precipitation Enhancement Strategy (SCIPES).

The last several years of below average snowfall have created difficulties for our area, particularly in agriculture. So much so, that a water call was filed earlier this year with the Idaho Department of Water Resources affecting water users in the Wood River Valley and on the Camas Prairie.

While SCIPES may not directly affect the ongoing water call process, it could help reduce future water problems by increasing the snowpack in the areas that provide water for the Camas Creek and Big Wood River drainage areas.

ticulates to storm clouds to encourage the formation of ice crystals which then fall to the ground as snow. Cloud seeding can increase precipitation by as much as 10%, but it is not without controversy.

The most common substances used for cloud seeding include silver iodide, potassium iodide and dry ice (solid carbon dioxide). The environmental and health impacts of putting chemicals into the air is a concern to many people. The toxicity of silver iodide is considered low by most studies, but some argue that sensitive individuals and environments could be affected.

The presentation by RC&D is mainly a request for funding from the City of Fairfield to support the project, but they will also be providing information and they encourage businesses and individuals to attend.

The City Council meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. The RC&D presentation will follow a few preliminary procedures.

Along with being a fundraiser for cancer research, this event is a celebration of cancer survivors and their caregivers. Come for an hour or two, or stay all night long until the closing ceremony at 7 a.m. Saturday morning.

Basic Training Graduation

On May 8th, Lundy and Joyce Flick, of Dietrich, traveled to Fort Sill Oklahoma to attend the graduation of their daughter, Timberly Flick, from Basic Training.

Joyce’s mother, Doris Bates, also of Dietrich, also attended. Timberly graduated with honors, receiving the Physical Training Award.

This award is given to the Soldier achieving the highest Physical Fitness score during a Physical Fitness Test. She scored 319 out of 300. She is now stationed at Fort Sam Houston for her AIT in the medical field.

Timberly is also a 2013 graduate of Dietrich School, and played in the 2011-2013 State Basketball Championship games in which Dietrich was Back to Back to Back state champions. ~~~~~

The Camas Conservation District is presently looking for submissions of new logo design. There will be a “Mystery Van Holland Makes Dean’s List Prize” awarded to the winner. Deadline is June 16th by Dr. Parris Watts, vice president of academic affairs for Noon. The canned food will be donated to Helping Hearts and Hands after the event.

Lake Idaho & the Fossils

Gooding County Historical Society and Museum Lecture Series will continue on June 17th, 2015 at 7:00 pm at the Gooding County Museum in Gooding, Idaho. The address is 273 Euskadi Lane (Hwy 46/Hwy 26 Junction). There is no charge for the lecture and refreshments will be served.

The featured speaker is Annette Rousseau, Education Specialist of Hagerman Fossil Beds NM and Minidoka National Historic Site. The title of the program will be: The Hagerman Area - Lake Idaho and the Fossils. Ms. Rousseau has over 15 years of teaching experience and has created and presented many outreach programs. She has served as a ranger at the Grand Canyon National Park before currently working in the Visitor Center in Hagerman.

Please come and listen to stories of the large lake that covered this area and the many fossils that have been discovered in the areas left when the Lake Idaho disappeared.

in Hagerman

by Ruth Simerly Paintings, pottery, photographs, and cards created by local artists fill the Art Works River Gallery at the corner of Main and State Street (Highway 30) in Hagerman.

The owners, Joe and Judy Greif, have spent the past year reaching out to the Hagerman community, visitors from around Magic Valley, and tourists, offering a place for local artists to display and sell their work. In addition, the couple teaches classes in pottery, painting, drawing and music, and hosts monthly musical programs by local musicians.

The gallery’s first featured local artist, LeRoy Holloway, displayed an extensive collection of western-themed paintings and Idaho landscapes. More than 10 other artists have shown their art in the gallery, including Mary Butler, Jerry Kencke, Rosie Eckert, and Teddy Keaton. Father and son, Ron and Jason Hicks, are scheduled to be the next featured artists in June.

Joe and Judy share a passion for enhancing the quality of life through increasing awareness and appreciation of the visual and performing arts; creating a welcoming environment for local artists; providing a venue for people to meet for fellowship and entertainment; and providing a place where children can see original art and have hands-on activities. The couple has spent a combined total of more than 40 years in art, photography and music education and consider themselves fortunate to have been able to continue with the gallery.

Art Works River Gallery is open Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday through Saturday, and at other times by appointment. You are invited to stop in, browse through the gallery, ask questions, and enjoy a cup of tea or glass of water with Joe and Judy. They can be reached at (208)751-4508. A heart felt thanks is extended to everyone from the Gooding Community that helped the local VFW Post 3078 members (who are somewhat old and few in numbers) place crosses and flags on the resting sights of Veterans in Elmwood Cemetery on May 22nd for Memorial Day. VFW Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary blue flags were placed on their resting places too. Also one cross and flag was placed at the resting sight of the only know Veteran in the Pioneer Cemetery. Diana Rae Price, 50, of Shoshone, passed away Sunday June 7, 2015, in Buhl.

She was born June 8, 1964, in Sun Valley, Idaho, the daughter of Ronald Hyde and Marjean Bruesch Hyde. Diana was raised in Shoshone and graduated from Shoshone High School in 1982.

She spent most of her working years at Valley Co-Op where she was the manager.

Diana married Marc Price and they made their home in Shoshone. She loved to help people and bless their lives through service.

Diana is survived by her husband, Marc Price, of Shoshone; their children, Cory Perkins, Nicholas (Tessa) Perkins, Marc Price, Nathen (Anna) Price and Matthew Price, all of Portland, OR; one grandson, Tristian Price; her mother, Marjean Kuntz of Buhl, ID; her father, Ron Hyde of Richfield, ID; four sisters, Kaylynne Hyde, Laurie Lane, Angela (Orval) Rice and Debbie (Dan) Pierson; three brothers, Shane (Eileen) Hyde, Kelly (Julia) Hyde and James (Brenda) Hyde; and many extended family members and friends.

She is preceded in death by her step-father, Floyd Carpenter.

A Celebration of Diana’s life will be conducted at 11 a.m.

Elden Amos Thompson

Elden Amos Thompson, 85, a resident of Bliss, passed away Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at Stonebridge Assisted Living in Hagerman.

Elden was born March 16, 1930, in Glenns Ferry, to Reed and Dorothy Thompson. He was raised and educated in Glenns Ferry and Bliss. After Elden’s father passed away at a young age, Elden’s mother married Joe Doyle, who became a second father to Elden.

He married Mayvis Hobdey Quigley on April 27, 1972, at the Methodist Church in Glenns Ferry.

Elden retired from Union Pacific Railroad, and was an accomplished rancher and cowboy all his life, and was active in many community organizations, including Operation Life Saver with Union Pacific, the Moose Lodge, the Elmore-Bennett Hills Cattleman’s Association, the Bliss Highway District, and the Cowboy Poets of Idaho, just to name a few.

Elden is survived by his wife, Mayvis; 4 sons, Roy Thompson, Ted Quigley, Steve Quigley, and Ray Thompson; and 1 sister, Helen Thompson.

Elden is also survived by 11 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 1 brother, Bill Thompson; and 1 sister, Valda Rae Branch.

A graveside service was held on Saturday, June 6th, at the Upper Clover Creek Cemetery north of Bliss.

A celebration of life followed at the at the Lower Salmon Team House.

The family suggests memorial donations in Elden’s name be made to the Bliss Community Church in Bliss.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service – Gooding Chapel.

Helen Ruth Stinemates

Helen Ruth Stinemates, 92, of Hagerman, passed away May 27, 2015, in Eagle, Idaho.

She was born June 2, 1922, in Olathe, Colorado, the daughter of Joseph Bishop and Myrtle Easton Bishop.

Helen was raised in El Centro, California until 1942 when she moved to San Diego, and she served her country by enlisting in the U.S. Navy during World War II. While stationed at North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego, she met the love of her life, Bill Stinemates. They were married June 19, 1944. Following their naval service, they settled in Escondido.

In 1968, Bill and Helen settled in Hagerman, Idaho, where they owned and operated Bill’s Market. Most of Helen’s working years were spent as a homemaker and working side by side with her husband.

She really loved to work in her garden and nature watching in the Stanley Basin. Mostly, Helen loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them.

Helen is survived by her two sons, Bob Stinemates of Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico, and Pete (Kay) Stinemates of Eagle, Idaho. She also survived by three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many extended family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and one brother.

At Helen’s request, no formal services will be held.

Arrangements are under the care of Farnsworth Mortuary and Crematory, 1343 S. Lincoln, Jerome, ID 83338.

Dietrich Booster Club Awarded $2000 Rural Community Grant

Northwest Farm Credit Services awarded the Dietrich Booster Club in Dietrich a $2000 Northwest FCS/CoBank Rural Community Grant Award. The grant will be used to update the computer technology lab.

Dietrich Booster Club, Brooke Anhder said, “Students of the Dietrich School District will benefit greatly thanks to Northwest Farm Credit’s generous grant to improve the school‘s technology lab. The grant will provide K-12 students sufficient training and exposure to technology as well as provide access to online courses that may not be available on campus. The school has recently made improvements and updates to the student technology lab, and with the help of Northwest Farm Credit the project will be completed. Dietrich thanks Northwest Farm Credit for their commitment to rural communities and knows that their generosity will produce graduates better prepared for college and the job force.”

Northwest FCS is committed to helping rural communities succeed. This year Northwest FCS, with support from CoBank, has awarded 46 rural grants totaling nearly $100,150. Since 2007, Northwest FCS has presented 399 rural grants totaling more than $810,900. The next rural grant deadline is October 1, 2015. Summer Fluoride Varnish Clinics South Central Public Health District (SCPHD) is offering fluoride varnish applications to children twelve and younger. Fluoride varnish, which is a gel-like substance that is “painted” on the child’s teeth with a small brush, strengthens tooth enamel to reduce and/or prevent tooth decay. The varnish is very safe since it’s applied directly to the teeth, and children can receive a fluoride varnish application as soon as they get their first teeth.

Fluoride varnish clinics will be held from 11 to 2 on the following dates and locations: · In Jerome at South Central Public Health (951 East Avenue H) on July 17. Gooding Fire Department Fund Raiser 2015 The Gooding Community is Awesome!

Sometimes we take things for granted.

For instance, being from or living in a small town. You are still a person and not a number or a statistic to make numbers work. I don’t know how I would get along in a city such as New York City or Los Angeles. If you said hello to a person in one of those cities, they might think you are trying to rob them.

Last weekend I was in Portland, Oregon, to attend a funeral.

To some, Portland is a big town. To me it doesn’t seem that big.

The only big thing to me is to mix a multitude of traffic and pouring rain. Those are a combo that makes for situations sometimes beyond one’s control. Fortunately for me, the weather in Portland was beautiful this last weekend. The people who attended and who were in the Rose Parade probably loved the great day as well.

A good share of the hotels were full due to the parade. Vacancy signs became signs - NO VACANCY. I shuffled around and found a hotel to stay in. Once in the lobby filling out the paperwork, I was charged double my room rate for a deposit.

I asked the clerk if I was being punished for using cash. I told them if they thought I was going to steal all the towels, I would use my own personal towel. If they were desperate enough, I told them I would even leave my towel for them. They assured me it was just policy. For all of you credit card holders, you should probably check your final bill when you leave a hotel. You may have charges you are unaware of. (Foot Note: the hotel said they’d inspect my room upon leaving. They did not.)

Around Midnight a maintenance crew was disassembling a door a couple down from mine. Did someone lose the magnetic code? For a large chain I was a little disheartened that their problem was not cured after the 11 a.m. check-out instead of during the 1 a.m. sleep-time.

Since I was awake I decided to take a walk about. Once in the parking lot waiting for more lights to come on due to noise, I was approached twice by people asking me for a cigarette. I don’t smoke!! I remember my dad saying, “I don’t care if you smoke, but don’t ever let me catch you bumming cigarettes.”

Perhaps these people didn’t have a dad that cared or scared you from smoking. Maybe they weren’t from a small town whereas everyone shares and everyone know everyone (in this, sharing a smoke would be different).

I walked a few blocks away to a local Walmart. “Sorry, we close at midnight.” That was cool with me, so I walked a few blocks more to a Jack-In-The-Box restaurant. Their lobby closed at midnight as well. I figured I would walk through the drivethrough. People behind me gave me thumbs-up for a guy without a car. At the window the server the server refused to wait on me because I didn’t have a car.

I have heard of, “No shirts, No shoes, No service,” but “No car, No service!?” Sorry to say my money went somewhere else.

Sometimes small town is THE BEST. Tee This is my “Cup of Tee” from the HOME front.

Gooding businesses participated in the Fire Pup Program once again this year, enabling the fire department to distribute fire prevention materials throughout the Gooding schools.

They were able to educate grades K-5 with the materials.

Also hats off to the community for participating in the “Fill the Boot for Vision” this year. They were able to raise $3000.00 for the Gooding Lions Club. This money will be spent locally on eye glasses and doctor visits.

The Annual Fire Department BBQ will be held on Saturday, June 27th, from 11 to 3 at the West Park in Gooding. During the day long event will include static displays from the Gooding Fire Department, Forest Service, BLM, and the National Guard. A general raffle along with a rifle raffle will take place around 2 p.m. As always, BBQ shirts will be for sale along with their pink shirts.

Proceeds from the pink shirts sells go directly to local families here in Gooding who are dealing with cancer.

Over the last few years, the Gooding Fire Department has donated thousands of dollars to families in our community.

This year they are raising money to replenish the Bumout Fund, and to raise funds for the training facility located at 2ll 2lst Ave East. The property donated by Joe and Kay Hults and office trailers donated by Glanbia Foods has created an opportunity to build a county wide training site.

Currently they would like to add a forceful entry prop to the training facility. The prop costs over $5000, but helps them remain proficient in opening locked and barricaded doors. It will be mobile and shared with the other fire departments in the area.

Drought Funding Available

The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announces up to $725,000 in Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) funding available to farmers and ranchers to mitigate the effects of drought in several Idaho counties. Applications must be received by June 19, 2015.

This EQIP investment will be targeted at areas in Idaho experiencing exceptional or extreme drought conditions according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. Eligible counties include: Blaine, Butte, Custer, Owyhee and Washington.

Farmers and ranchers in these counties may apply to implement a variety of practices designed to provide immediate drought relief and help with resilience for the future. Potential projects may include applying conservation practices that improve soil health and water holding capacity, manage limited forage through prescribed grazing plans, and ensure reliable water sources are available for livestock operations.

Producers and landowners in the listed counties are encouraged to visit their local NRCS field office for more information or to apply for this new funding opportunity.

Youth Conference in Gooding The local Idaho Association of the Deaf is working to bring a youth conference geared toward Deaf teenagers to Gooding on August 3rd thru August 7th. This year’s theme is in American Sign Language, and is roughly translated into “Language Sharing, Community, Unity” which is a reflection of the National Association of the Deaf’s theme during their conference last summer. The premise is that decisions made in Deaf Education, accessibility for the Deaf, and services for the Deaf, should be made with our input and that all aspects of our community should work together.
