Small Town Crime
Fairfield recently experienced a rash of break-in. Sometimes things were taken and other times, nothing. Also, with the high cost of fuel, there have been reports throughout the area of gas and diesel being stolen out of farmer's tanks. It is easy to blame this uptick in crime on the influx of new people from urban areas moving into our small communities, but truthfully, it is a growing problem in our society that people (most often younger individuals) have no respect for other people or their property. They have been taught - by social media, movies, and politics - that life doesn't matter and nothing they do will change things. What can we (the responsible people) do? One, to prevent these types of crime, and two, to help individuals caught up in criminal activities? First... report these crimes to the police. We often have the perception that petty crimes are unsolvable, so what's the point of reporting such things? The police can't do their job if we don't tell them what's going on. They do not magically know when a crime has been committed. Telling all your friends about a dirty rotten scoundrel on facebook does not count. Secondly... have compassion. While some criminals are just that - criminals - other individuals involved in crime are looking for attention. Maybe their homelife is a disaster, maybe they are caught up in drug abuse, or perhaps they have mental problems. Regardless of why, they have been taught that they find attention by seeking their 15 minutes (or 15 seconds) of fame where ever and however they can. Let's be clear, compassion is NOT... turning a blind eye to criminal activity. Ignoring bad behavior will not make it go away, and doing so usually leads to more bad behavior.
