News Camas Lily Days
This Saturday, June 6th, the Annual Camas Lily Days celebration will kick off at the Kids Pond one mile east of Fairfield. Along with the help of Fish & Game’s “Take Me Fishing” program, the Camas Chamber of Commerce will host this fun event for kids. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the derby runs from 8 to 11 with prizes, Hot Dogs, and lots of family fun. If fishing isn’t your game, head on over the Camas Senior Center (129 Willow Avenue W.) for Breakfast where they will be serving Bonnie Sweet’s Famous Sourdough Pancakes. They will also be having a fundraising yard sale with all kinds of
treasures. Just across the road from the center is the City Park where you will find arts and crafts galore starting a 10 a.m. At one o’clock the music will begin with Wilson French playing up-beat, family friendly, two-part & three-part harmony. At 4 p.m. Dirty Johnny will fire up the stage with Rock and Country music. On Sunday morning, June 7th, don’t bother cooking, just come to the park for a Community Breakfast starting at 8 a.m. Arts and craft vendors will open up at 10 o’clock to give a second chance to buy that special something you won’t find anywhere else. At 2 p.m. get ready for a different kind of dancing music with the Shoban Homecoming, and don’t be shy about joining in when you are invited to join the celebration.

Cruisin’ 4 A Cure
The “Cruisin’ 4 A Cure” Poker Run fundraiser will take place this Saturday with registration at the Gooding County Fairgrounds starting at 9 a.m. There will be a meet and greet time from 10 a.m. until noon. All cars and motorcycles will take off at noon on a route from Gooding, to Wendell, to Hagerman, to Bliss, and back to the fairgrounds. P&Z to Discuss Wrecking Yard
Next Monday, the Gooding County Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing to consider a Special Use Permit application for property located just south of the City of Gooding. The proposed use is for a wrecking yard and automobile sales at 1958 Highway 46 (next to the old radio station). The property is currently zoned Transitional-2. The public hearing will be held at the

Special Program at the Library
Everyone is invited to attend a very special presentation at the Camas County Public Library Saturday, June 6th. Clell Ballard will be speaking about Camas County in the 1950’s and the early history of the postal system in the county. It’s sure to be a good one with lots of pictures included. The program will begin at 7 p.m. at the library and will last about one hour and of course refreshments will be served. This event is free and is part of the Camas Lilly Days celebration; it is sponsored by the Camas County Library and the Camas County Library Foundation.

Gooding Soil Conservation District Awarded $1000 Rural Community Grant
Northwest Farm Credit Services is proud to award the Gooding Soil Conservation District in Gooding, ID a $1000 Northwest FCS/CoBank Rural Community Grant Award. The grant will be used to help complete the High Tunnel with a sprinkler irrigation system. Administrative Assistant for Gooding Soil Conservation District, Barbara Messick said “Fantastic! The Gooding SCD is so grateful for your support to continue our efforts with the Gooding SCD’s Community Garden. It is perfect timing as we are getting ready to plant a warm season cover crop demonstration plot and bedding plants for the summer. We will work on installing a water system for the High Tunnel and also do some fencing to designate certain areas for Information and Education. Again, we couldn’t do it without the help of the Northwest FCS grant opportunities, Thank You!” Northwest FCS is committed to helping rural communities succeed. This year Northwest FCS, with support from CoBank, has awarded 46 rural grants totaling nearly $100,150. Since 2007, Northwest FCS has presented 399 rural grants totaling more than $810,900. obituary Owen Claude Scanlon
Owen Claude Scanlon, 87, of Nampa, Idaho, died May 28, 2015 at his residence. Claude was born Dec. 24, 1927 in Concordia, Kansas, the second son of Owen Cauley and Lavina Jacobs Scanlon. He spent much of his boyhood on a farm in Collyer, Kansas and he attended the Trego public schools where his mother had taught for a number of years. The family finally left the Dust Bowl area in 1944, settling in Gooding, Idaho where Claude completed high school and then enlisted in the Army. Following his military service, he attended Idaho State College in Pocatello, moving back to Gooding following graduation. Here he met Joyce Charlene Herrick on a blind date and the two were married August 11, 1949. The new family lived for a time in Jerome and Ketchum until finally settling back in Gooding, where Claude ran his own petroleum delivery company for the next twentyfive years. He was an active Rotarian in Gooding beginning in 1958, where he was secretary for a good number of years and acting president from 1973-1974. He was also on the Gooding School Board while most of his children were in high school. Claude and Joyce moved to Nampa last year to be closer to their children. Claude is survived by his wife (Nampa ID), three sons, Owen Wright Scanlon (Hailey ID), Rory Rahn Scanlon (American Fork UT) and James Claude Scanlon (Boise ID) and one daughter, Cheryl Anne Case (Nampa ID). Also surviving are a sister, Ruth Caroline Wilker (Winslow AZ), a brother, Roger Thomas Scanlon (Las Vegas NV), eighteen grandchildren and thirty great grandchildren. Claude was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Frank Lavaine Scanlon. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 5, 2015, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Gooding with visitation at the church beginning at 10 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to a favorite charity or the North Canyon Medical Center in Gooding (ncm-c.org).

Stanley Allen Carlisle
Stanley Allen Carlisle, 74, a resident of Gooding, passed away on Monday, June 1, 2015 at his home. Stan was born on June 5, 1940 to Harvey and Margaret Houghtaling Carlisle in Sacramento, California. Growing up he worked on his fathers’ fruit farm as well as took care of the Hereford cattle. Farming was Stan’s life, after graduating from high school he took agriculture classes at the community college. In 1968 he married Mary Haddock and moved to Corvallis, Oregon where Stan still had cattle and also worked at Oregon State University. In 1972 Stan and Mary moved to Bliss, Idaho to their 575 acre farm where he raised his cattle and farmed the ground. In 2006 Mary passed away. In 2007 Stan then met the love of his life and after five weeks he married Sally Poole at his home. In 2011 due to declining health they sold the farm and bought a 45 acre farm north of Gooding. They bought a 1929 Model A pickup which they named “Lizzy”, then bought a Model A car named “Betsy” which was Stan’s big play toy. He is survived by: his loving wife, Murline “Sally” Poole Carlisle of Gooding; one brother, James (Jan) Carlisle of Meadow Vista, CA.; two sisters, Marilyn Carlisle of Baltimore, MD. And Susan (John) McVay of Granite Bay, CA; step daughter, Dawnna (Jason) Lancashire of Ligonier, PA.; “his boys” as he called them, Frank (Jo Jan) Adams of Orangeville, PA., Eric (Cris) Adams of Wendell, ID., and Chad (Jess) Huber of Gooding, ID.; seven grandchildren, Jessi, Sammi, Maddi, Sadie, Brittany, Jathan and Brandon; and four great grandchildren, Gunner, Danica, Dalton and Alyson. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his first wife, Mary. We wish to thank Mike and Mary, Nathan and Suzanne, Cody and Maegan, and Tenley, Stan’s nurse who were with us through these hard last weeks. A celebration of Stanley’s life will be held on Friday, June 5, 2015, from 3 to 7 p.m. at his home - 1414 South 2000 East - north of Gooding. Lindsey Eileen Blunt, 29, a resident of Gooding, passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at North Canyon Medical Center in Gooding. Lindsey was born on March 31, 1986 in Jerome, Idaho, the daughter of Vickie and Garald Blunt. She was raised and educated in Crescent Valley and Battle Mountain, Nevada and Gooding, Idaho. She was a member of the Gooding L.D.S. Church. Lindsey is survived by: her mother, Vickie Blunt of Gooding; two brothers, Ben Blunt and Jason Blunt, both of Gooding; and one sister, Jolene Blunt of Wendell. She was preceded in death by her father, Garald Lindsey Blunt; and two brothers, Jacob Lee Blunt and Joseph Jay Driesel. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Gooding L.D.S. Church. A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. A graveside service will be held on Monday, June 8, 2015 at 2 p.m. at the Battle Mountain Cemetery in Battle Mountain, Nevada. THE HISTORIC SCHUBERT THEATRE
The May “Raise The Roof” fundraiser for the restoration of the Schubert Theater in Gooding was a huge success! The communities of Gooding, Shoshone, Hagerman, Wendell and Bliss, came together in the spirit of sharing and donated many wonderful items for the garage sale, silent auction, and bake sale to raise funds for a new roof. Currently the leaking roof is causing major interior damage to historical moldings, canvases, ceiling and walls and it is critical that a new roof be in place as soon as possible. Restoration of this historic 1920’s theatre will enable families, kids, parents, grandparents & senior citizens who reside locally as well as those from the surrounding communities to be entertained closer to home. The opening of the Schubert Theatre will encourage people of all ages to participate in the activities that will take place in the theater both on stage and off. Along with the very generous anonymous & private cash donations from several businesses and individuals, came community awareness of the GREAT need to get this theater restored and the wide eyed wonderment of excited children who came in to see the theatre that said they wanted to “mow lawns and donate their money to the theatre”! GOODING COUNTY RELAY FOR LIFE
Fairgrounds beginning at 6 p.m. So, bring your favorite lawn chair and plan on watching all the activities. A special lap planned for the kids who want to help with the American Cancer Society Relay For Life called “Kids Klang For A Cure!” Starting at about 8 p.m. children are asked to make a mighty “KLANG” as they drop their change in a bucket. Children are encouraged to gather change from family and friends and bring it to the fairgrounds. In keeping with the Relay theme, “We Can All Be A Hero – Be A Hero’s Hero”, these “Karing kids” will receive a special superhero bag. It is important that children learn at an early age to be considerate of others and to show compassion. They may not realize that they can make a big difference in the life of someone else - heroes come in ALL sizes!

I use to stack hay for my source of income in my teen-aged years. In those days we stacked the smaller two-stringed bales that weighed between 80 and 120 pounds each. Sometimes I would stack all day for one customer and evening hours for another. The pay was usually by the bale. That meant you had to haul a lot of bales. If you didn’t guarantee your stacking job, you soon found that the farmers wouldn’t hire you. The last thing they wanted was the hay stack to fall down or apart in the middle of bad weather conditions. Feed was too precious to be short early in the winter. I kept all the customers I could handle because I did guarantee my stacking job. The pattern in which the bales were tied together was great if you followed a few simple rules. My dad had taught some fellows the pattern and I learned from them later on. You can say Dad taught me without ever saying a word to me. In fact, when my dad and I stacked together, it was like we were an oiled machine. I use to stack hay for an older gentleman named Otis. He had forty acres of hay and two hundred acres of mosquitoes. On one particular cutting I had another job that wasn’t quite finished. It overlapped my getting to Otis. Another kid, Clifford, thought since I could stack hay, he could too. He contracted to stack the hay from Otis. About four hours into the job I joined him, perhaps to speed up the hay hauling process. Otis told me he was worried about Clifford’s job. I believe Clifford said he would stack for a cent cheaper just to get the hours worth of jump on me (Otis was pretty on schedule for water use). When I arrived Clifford was about nine bales high on his stack, and it looked pretty sad. I’m sure the stack wasn’t tied together. Otis walked over to Clifford and asked him if he guaranteed his work. His reply was, “No.” Otis then replied, “Tee guarantees his stack. In fact, if it was in the barn and a tornado came and blew the barn away, the stack would still be there.” While Otis and I were discussing plans to get the rest of the hay out of the field, the haystack Clifford was stacking on fell over. Needless to say, Clifford was relieved of his stacking job. It wasn’t because of his lack of trying but his lack of commitment to excellence. My sister and I went to hauling hay from the field. Otis wanted me to fix Clifford’s stack. I told him I could work on it or build mine next to his to hold it up. I would by no means put a guarantee on some work that had no foundation for a guarantee. Otis offered me a little extra to save his crop. I agreed to that. After all, a few acres less mosquitoes on the haul in. Nothing in life is guaranteed but if you always try to do your best - your work will speak for itself. Tee This is my “Cup of Tee” so stacked.

Youth Conference in Gooding The local Idaho Association of the Deaf is working to bring a youth conference geared toward Deaf teenagers to Gooding on August 3rd thru August 7th. This year’s theme is in American Sign Language, and is roughly translated into “Language Sharing, Community, Unity” which is a reflection of the National Association of the Deaf’s theme during their conference last summer. The premise is that decisions made in Deaf Education, accessibility for the Deaf, and services for the Deaf, should be made with our input and that all aspects of our community should work together. Local businesses and individuals are being asked to help by donating to the local organization to help make the Gooding Youth Conference the best it can be.
