Camas Lily Days – June 4th & 5th, 2016
This weekend, the annual Camas Lily Days will take place in Fairfield, Idaho. On Saturday morning (June 4th) bring your kids out to Kids Pond for the Fishing Derby (one mile east of Fairfield just north of Highway 20). There will prizes for various age groups and Idaho Fish & Game will be on hand to provide equipment and information.
At 1:30, the City of Fairfield & Camas County will hold a surplus equipment auction across the street from the Senior Center. Meanwhile, the Senior Center will host a fundraising yard sale. Next door in the City Park, vendors will have various items for sale, and starting at 5 p.m. there will be live music with Dirty
Johnny. Sunday morning (June 5th) kicks off with a Community Breakfast in the City Park from 8 to 11 a.m. Along with vendors, inflatable carnival games will be set up in the City Park as well. Native American Dancers will take over the City Park in the afternoon. Be sure to bring your dancing shoes and join the fun.
Northwest Farm Credit Services is proud to award Gooding Volunteer Group in Gooding, Idaho, a $1,500 Northwest FCS Rural Community Grant. “This grant will be used toward tools and materials for the new Gooding Community Playground, which will be installed October 2016,” said Becca Pereira, Public Relations Coordinator. “With some pieces about 30 years old, and ever increasing usage, the playground in Gooding’s East Park has been wearing down. It’s in need of replacement and the Gooding Volunteer Group has teamed up with a core group of individuals to make this dream become a reality.
“Our goal is to create a unique park to benefit all children in Gooding and surrounding areas. This park will be custom-designed to be unique and American Disability Association approved. It will be handicapped-accessible and include components for children with a wide range of disabilities. Over
500 children have special needs in Gooding County, and they need a place they can enjoy with their families. This playground will also benefit surrounding communities, as families will travel to Gooding for a playground of this nature. Thank you so much to Northwest Farm Credit Services continued on page 4

Magic Valley Dairy Days
June 9th, 10th, & 11th
The Wendell City Park will soon be filled Carnival rides, food & craft vendors, and artistic performers. Thursday evening (June 9th) Cindy & Gary Braun will be performing on the Dairy Days stage. Thursday is also Family Night (discounted tickets) at the carnival. Friday’s entertainment will include Mr Cappi followed by The Space Hats. Saturday (June 11th) come early for the Community Breakfast, wander through the Magic Valley Show & Shine Car Show, and find a good seat for the Dairy Days Parade which rolls down Idaho Street at 10:30. If you want to participate in the parade, registration is at the LDS Church parking lot (208-320-3414 for information). Saturday entertainment in the park begins at 12 noon with Uptown Dance Studio. At 1:00 p.m. Sweet Country Air will finish the afternoon with musical Entertainment. On May 14 the Camas Conservation District supervised over 25 people who helped plant trees at the Medical Center as part of our Arbor Day Celebration. 165 super plugs and 50 potted trees were planted to provide wind protection at the spot. Local Scouts were part of the gang as well as Mayor Marolf , State Representative Steve Miller, and John Pine, USFS. Leslie Staley was the winner of the raffle.
On June 4th at 1:30 p.m. the City of Fairfield and Camas County will hold a Government Surplus Auction at 130 Willow Avenue West (across from the Senior Center). Some of the items to be sold include: a Chevrolet 3/4 ton Truck, a Ford Expedition, a Kubota Park Lawn Mower, Bumper Pull Street Sweeper, Small Row Boat & Trailer. Additions: 2 sewer pumps, well pump motors, pull behind ATV mower, snow extension for 310 John Deere backhoe, snow plow for ATV, old christmas decorations (lamps), small welding table, propane tank, target hot saw, water meters, tire chains, airless paint sprayer, rail road irons, cinderblock, vacuums, 1992 dodge 3/4 ton 4x4 pickup, 2005 tahoe (196781), 2004 tahoe, and various small items that have not been used in the past 10 years. Wendell City Library has five computers that are going up for a silent auction. The five computers (hard drives removed) will be individually auctioned off by a sealed bid to the public. All bids must be sealed and turned in to Librarian Annie Burke no later than June 7, 2016 at 5 p.m. All sealed bids will be opened on June 15 at the regular Library Board meeting. Personal use fuelwood permits for the Sawtooth National Forest are now on sale for the Minidoka Ranger District, Fairfield Ranger District, Ketchum Ranger District, and Sawtooth National Recreation Area. Permits are $12.50 per cord with a 2-cord minimum and a 10-cord maximum per household. Permits will be available at USDA - Forest Service Ranger District offices and private vendors in South Central Idaho. Each Forest fuelwood permit is valid for use on the Sawtooth, Boise or Payette National Forest. All motorized travel related to fuelwood gathering must be in full accordance with Forest Service travel regulations for the area as shown in the Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM), unless specifically exempted in the fuelwood permit. Once the snow melts, the public is encouraged to cut fuelwood early in the year because fire restrictions may impact the cutting season later in the summer. However, early season fuelwood cutters should be very careful with wet road conditions and avoid them if rutting or getting stuck is a potential. Fuelwood cutting is not allowed within riparian areas (adjacent to creeks and rivers). More information at local Ranger District offices.

Free Pollinators in the Landscape
The Wood River Land Trust is teaming up with the Sawtooth Botanical Garden, The Nature Conservancy and the Sawtooth National Recreation Area to offer a free Pollinators in the Landscape Workshop Series. The series includes four different workshops this spring and early summer. The workshops are designed to help professionals and homeowners learn more about the importance of pollinators in the landscape, and how to attract them to our own backyards.

obituary Ursula Josephine Scheer
Ursula Josephine Scheer, 92, a resident of Gooding, passed away Thursday, May 26, 2016 at her home in Gooding. Ursula was born on August 4, 1923 in Emmett, Idaho, to Kirk and Lula Strang. She was raised and educated in Emmett, Idaho. Ursula married Lloyd Edwards in 1941. To this union, one son, David Edwards was born. Ursula and Lloyd later divorced. She married Jack Scheer in 1957, and 2 sons were born to this union, Scott and Von Scheer. Ursula lived on a ranch on the Camas Prairie until the late 1990’s, then moved to Gooding. She spent most of her life working on the ranch and waitressing in Gooding at the Dairy Inn and the Lincoln Inn. She spent the last 15 years with her friend and companion, Willie Rumple, who took loving care of her until the very end. We are grateful to him. Ursula us survived by her companion, Willie Rumple, of Gooding, Idaho; 3 sons, David Edwards, of Boise, Idaho, Von Scheer, and Scott Scheer, both of Fairfield, Idaho; 6 grandchildren, Carey Edwards, Kevin Edwards, Brian Edwards, Dwight Edwards, Amanda Scheer and Enoch Scheer. Ursula is also survived by 4 great-grandchildren, Ryker Scheer, Camary Pratt, Mason Pratt and Trevor Pratt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Scheer, and Lloyd Edwards. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, June 6, 2016, at Calvary Lutheran Church, 2100 California St. in Gooding. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service – Gooding Chapel. Margaret (Marge) Luther 80th Birthday Celebration
This past Saturday, an open house was held at the Camas County Senior Center in Fairfield to celebrate Margaret Luther’s 80th birthday. Margaret was born on September 24th 1936 in Soldier Idaho. She married Martin (Marty) Luther in Fairfield Idaho on September 15th 1955. She worked as a Rural Mail Carrier for the USPS, driving 100 miles a day in her personal car throughout the Roberts, Menan and Lewisville areas. She retired in November of 1996 and relocated to beautiful Anderson Island in Washington State’s Puget Sound. She is active in her community and enjoys many friends and activities. She plays bridge, volunteers at the community club, historical society, and where ever else she is needed.

CSI Herrett Center
The Herrett Center for Arts and Science is launching a series of nine fun, low cost, summer workshops for kids as young as six years old. All sessions will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. June 15: Paper Planes. Ever wonder what keeps airplanes in the sky? This is a workshop about flight. Everyone will learn the basic science behind flying, and then have a chance to build their own paper airplane. We will finish the workshop with a paper plane fly-off to see which designs are the best flyers! Ages 6 and up. Children under 8 must have a parent present. $5 per participant. June 22: Coiled Pottery. Many different American Indian cultures created beautiful clay pottery. The technique that was widely used in North and South America is called coiling. In this workshop, you will make your own coiled clay pot using air-dry clay. The technique is easy to learn, and everyone will leave with a completed pot that will dry overnight. Ages 6 and up. Children under 8 must have a parent present. $10 per participant. June 29: Hoop Drums. For the many Native cultures that call the Great Plains their homeland, the hoop was a very important symbol of the circle of life. In this workshop, you will have the chance to create one of the most musical examples of the hoop in Great Plains cultures: the drum! Ages 8 and up. $5 per participant. July 20: Fossil Casts. Many of the fossils seen in museums are not originals. The originals are often too fragile to be on display, so museums create casts of the fossils that look just like the real thing. In this workshop, you will have the chance to create your own fossil cast of an object from the Herrett Center collection. Ages 6 and up. Children under 8 must have a parent present. $10 per participant.

Memorial weekend is for many of us the official start of summer. Calendar speaking - Not so. At any rate, it is a chance to hit the road traveling or to skies for flight. If you are flying, one wonders whether they should eat before they leave or wait until they reach their destination. Today, airline flight meals for a short distance may consist of some peanuts and a soda (you may even have to pay for the peanuts). Back twenty years ago, I believe people flew just to eat a fine meal in the sky. In the 1930’s, commercial flights came into existence. American Airlines was the first rudimentary meal service in the DC3 planes. Thermos were used for hot and cold drinks. Fried chicken and biscuits were a meal served in a sack lunch setting. People were less concerned with the food than they were reaching their destination alive. At this time the aircraft flew lower and were in the air currents. Planes moved like ribbons behind a fan. In 1936, United Airlines was the first to have kitchens preparing meals in flight. Previously they were assembled at bakeries, grocery stores, and restaurants. The new flying kitchens were modeled after ocean going ships. After WWII, commercial airflight took off. Planes flew higher and had more power. This alleviated a lot of problems. People still had fears, but more light in the cabins, free cigarettes, and of course, meals, broke the monotony and decreased stress. With the higher flying airplanes and pressurized cabins, tastebuds weren’t as keen. Thus food tasted flavorless. Instead of drinking more water, people started to drink more alcoholic beverages. In the 1970’s, airline food was like going to a fancy restaurant. First class on a long flight could have a seven course meal. Pan Am was the first airline to give you the option of a buffet or a swing club style lounge. The United State government regulated the prices of fares to specific destinations on all airlines. When the airlines were deregulated in the 1980’s, they had to cram as many people as possible on a plane to compete with other airlines. Then, to make up for lost revenues, the airlines cut back on the luxuries. Up until 9-11-2001, airlines served meals with full metal cutlery. After 9-11 the airlines went with plastic spoon/fork combinations (the spork). Pilots order different meals from each other, just in case there is food poisoning (the plane can still operate with one pilot). Chicken is still on the menu because it holds up better than read meat and remains moist and tender after heating. This is my “Cup of Tee” and peanuts for Memorial Day.
