The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Gooding County, Idaho is offering an opportunity for businesses and local communities to show their awareness and support in the fight against cancer from June 1st to June 6th.

It will be “Paint The Town Purple” in all of Gooding County. This week decorate your businesses and your homes in PURPLE ribbons, balloons, and flowers. Wear something PURPLE every day this week.

Wendell fire department is planning on helping to decorate their streets with purple ribbons on Tuesday and Gooding is getting the help of the fire department to decorate on Wednesday.

Thanks to a large donation, the Richfield QRU (Quick Response Unit) has funded the QRU Legacy Scholarship for Richfield youth who want to go into the medical field. The first recipient of this scholarship is graduating Richfield Senior, Jeff Henson, in the amount of $1000.

“The Richfield QRU believes in our youth and our Richfield community and we are proud to present our first medical field scholarship award to Mr. Jeff Henson.”

The Richfield QRU unit was formed in 1978, and for over 37 years Richfield has supported the QRU through membership, fundraisers, donations, and blood, sweat & tears. As the old QRU members are retiring and handing the reins to a new eager group of very qualified EMT’s, they want to honor the Richfield community by giving back to the people who gave so much. Right now, they have enough funds for at least 20 years of scholarships.

Applications for this scholarship must be turned in to the Richfield High School Counselor’s Office in April of a student’s graduation. Applications are judged by a scholarship board of past and present Richfield EMTs, based on essay, resume, references, and transcripts.

The Camas County Senior and Community Center says farewell to longtime board chairman Ken Cox as he leaves to pursue other projects. His years of service are greatly appreciated.

Alternate board member Sue Robbins will fill the vacated seat. Jerry Nelson has been appointed as the new alternate board member. A new chairman has yet to be selected. Good luck to you Ken in your future endeavors!

obituary Donetta E. Hope Delgado

Donetta E. Hope Delgado, 59, of Jerome, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday May 22, 2015, in Twin Falls.

She was born May 11, 1956, in Rexburg, Idaho, the daughter of Darrell E. Hope and Donna Hardy Hope.

Donetta was raised in southern Idaho and graduated from Wendell High School. She raised one daughter, Maria LaDawn. Most of her working years were spent as a behavior specialist in child development. Donetta was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She loved being a Mom and Grandma.

Donetta is survived by her daughter, Maria (Jesse)Pizano of Jerome; her grandchildren Jessica(Morgan)West; her siblings, Dennis(Vicki) of Burley, DeVere of Burley, Doyle(Robyn) of Wendell, Diana(Jeff) Percival of Herriman, UT, Darren(Tamera) of Mahomet, IL, and Darrelyn(Michael) Stearns of Burley; and many extended family members and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 29, 2015, at the Jerome LDS 2nd Ward Chapel (50 East 100 South, Jerome). Interment will follow in the Wendell Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Farnsworth Mortuary of Jerome.

Mary Georgia Gill

Georgia Gill, 78, of Gooding, Idaho, passed away May 19, 2015, at Ashley Manor, in Jerome, Idaho, where she was blessed to be so generously taken care of.

“George” as she was affectionately called by those who were close to her, was born December 22, 1936. She was the youngest (and the last survivor) of five daughters and one son born to Wes and Cora Salisbury in Challis, Idaho. Her parents started out as ranchers on Bay Horse Creek in Challis. Later, they moved and worked on ranches throughout Nevada, Arizona, and Idaho where Georgia attended schools. She graduated high school from Glenns Ferry in 1956. Georgia, being raised on these various ranches never lost her sense of adventure and love of nature and animals. As a girl she made pets of different wild creatures including a deer, crow, and a pair of badgers.

Shortly after graduation she married her cowboy, Bob Gill on June 3, 1956, in King Hill, Idaho. Georgia and Bob continued the ranching and farming tradition while raising their three boys, Don, Ron, and Jon. Georgia loved the outdoors, and spent her summers in “Cow Camps” where she was an accomplished cook with a wood stove; baking cakes, cookies, and biscuits.

No morning was complete without her sourdough pancakes, and when the evening chores were complete you never had to ask twice to go down to the creek to catch a mess of fish.

Georgia was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and she joyfully attended games, rodeos, and team ropings that her sons and grandchildren were involved in. One of the few things that Georgia did for herself was joining the Liberty Bells Riding Club in Gooding, where she made wonderful memories riding in parades and rodeos with her fellow horsewomen enthusiasts.

Georgia had a kind and caring nature and used it well while working in many hospitals across southern Idaho.

When the boys were grown Georgia and Bob moved to Stanley Basin where Bob was employed by the U.S.

Shirley Faye Turner Bluemer Heitz

Shirley Faye Turner Bluemer Heitz, 80, of Jerome, passed away Monday May 18, 2015, in Twin Falls. She was born July 24, 1934, in Shoshone, Idaho, the daughter of John E. Turner and Vergie Geraldine Dennett Turner. Shirley loved her family and baked for all her friends.

She was very much loved.

Shirley is survived by her children; Juliana Bluemer Carpenter (Tom), Brad Bluemer (Judie), Ray Bluemer (Paula), Wade Bluemer(Mary), Trudy Bluemer Ruby (James); 29 natural grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her stepchildren, Eldon Heitz (Cherry), Linda Heitz Miller (Larry) six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; one sister; two brothers; two sons, Barry and Bart Bluemer; two grandsons, Brendan Bluemer and Patrick Carpenter; one granddaughter, Treasure Ruby; and one greatgranddaughter, Angelina Hernandez; and the love of her life, Kenneth Heitz.

Graveside memorial services were conducted on Tuesday May 26, 2015, at the Wendell Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Farnsworth Mortuary of Jerome.

Forest Service, and for many years Georgia cleaned house in Sun Valley for Mrs. Heinz, who became her respected good friend. Georgia loved the mountains and lakes and spent her free time fishing and boating with Bob and her grandchildren.

When she and Bob retired they moved back to Gooding where they enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Georgia is survived and will forever be remembered by her husband, Bob; sons Don (Denise); Ron (Brenda); Jon (Mary) and grandchildren Jessica, Sarah, Wes, Hailey, Jordan, Rusty, Kade, Chelsea, and Charly; and great grandchildren, Dregan Gill and Amaia Zatica.

Georgia’s graveside funeral will be held on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at 3:00 pm, at Elmwood Cemetery in Gooding. An afterward social will be at the Gooding Co. Fairgrounds.

Pesky Spring Reminders:

With the advent of so much spring beauty for the sense’s, tulips blooming, daffodils bending in the wind, the smell of mown lawns, and the sound of sprinklers ‘chicketing’, it is a good thing we have forsythia to remind us of the pesky weeds spring will bring. Forsythia!?! What does forsythia have to do with pesky weeds? A couple weeks ago I was reminded of this fact when driving by a forsythia bush in full bloom.

Forsythia has a beautiful yellow brilliance to add additional colors to your spring array of bulbs. Although beautiful they are a subtle reminder of crabgrass and other annual weedy grass prevention. Many readers will consider it strange that a great science minded horticulturist would use the blooming of forsythia to indicate the presence of crabgrass, but there is a correlation. In general, crabgrass seed germination coincides with the time when forsythia blossoms start to fall.

Therefore forsythia becomes an early or late warning of the soil temperature. This in turn allows us to apply our preemergent products just before germination which insures better herbicide coverage in the germination zone of the soil.

Usually Mother Nature moves the product into the soil with a little bit of precipitation, but if the forecast predicts dry weather, one will need to irrigate within a couple days after the application. Better timing and coverage equals better percentage of control.

Now that we know when to apply our crabgrass preventer, the question of what product to use often comes up. First, it should be noted, because crabgrass is intolerant of shade, maintaining a vigorous stand of the desired turf grass through proper mowing, fertilization and soil care is the best defense against this opportunistic invader. There is no single product that is superior to all other products available. Most of the products available to homeowners for crabgrass control on established lawns will contain either: benefin, bensulide, pendimethalin, or trifluralin. All provide excellent crabgrass control when applied properly. Benefin may have shorter residual control, but that will vary with the rate of application and environmental conditions. Corn gluten is an organic herbicide alternative that has shown some ability to suppress crabgrass germination.

For more information on crabgrass or other lawn weeds call the Extension office for recommendations. Master Gardener Diagnostic clinics will be offered in Magic Valley Extension offices starting May.

Noon. Everyone must be registered between 9 am and noon before taking the drive. Enrollment forms are available on the relayforlife.org/goodingid website, or we will have them at the Fairgrounds at registration time.

This is NOT a race, just a leisurely drive through mostly Gooding County. We will draw the first card at the Fairgrounds before the run begins and then the second card at the Valley Country Store in Gooding. The 3rd card will be drawn at the Valley Country Store in Wendell next to the Farmhouse Restaurant. We will then go south to River Road before turning onto HWY 30 and coming back to Hagerman where we will pick another card at the Shell station. Our last card will be drawn at Ziggy’s in Bliss.

Everyone will meet back at the Gooding Fairgrounds.

This is roughly 70 miles.

There will be prizes and awards. Several Relay teams will have food and items for sale to raise money for their respective teams, along with a yard sale at Columbia Bank at 746 Main St. in Gooding.

There are only a couple weeks until the Gooding County Relay For Life on Friday June 12th. Each team will be trying to raise money at different fundraising events. Fairfield Community Review June 24th & 25th

Have you heard? The City of Fairfield will be hosting a Community Review June 24-25, 2015. As part of the community review process, residents of the City of Fairfield and Camas County are asked to complete and send in a survey being mailed in May. Residents are asked to mail their completed paper survey no later than June 1, 2015 to allow for the compilation of results.

Many an adult will give their thoughts to the graduate. I guess I’m no different. Whenever a person reads something, they read an opinion of someone else. But, if you believe, use, or store the information, the information becomes formalization or a structured thought.

A friend once asked me, “Tee, why do you have all that worthless information stored in your head?” My reply was, “All information is useful one time or another, therefore, it will fill its worth. The human brain can store more information than a computer so why not use it?” With these lines I’ll share a few of my thoughts.

Richfield Readies to Celebrate 60th

by Marsha Hiatt Richfield’s 60th Annual Outlaw Day is fast approaching and this year’s event – to be held on June 13th – will be bigger and better than ever before. Event organizers have been attempting to contact anyone affiliated with the celebration from years past – from former queens to previous grand marshalls to family members of past Richfield Riding Club members. “We’d like to see everyone who’s ever had been involved with the celebration be represented in the parade that day,” organizers said. This year’s theme is “Where Have All the Outlaws Gone”. To enter your float in the parade simply show up at the City Park that morning and sign up – winners will receive cash prizes.

The event kicks off with a community breakfast at 7:30 a.m. at the Richfield School. The parade down Main Street starts at 10:30 and from there the crowd shifts to Reynolds Field (just west of town on Hwy 26). The kid’s events start up first and these include a stick horse race, goat tying and calf riding. Big kids get to join in the fun next with competitions that involve alumni team roping, barrel racing, pole bending and a couple of contests that are unique to Outlaw Day – the hide race and rescue race.

The mud bog races begin at approximately 4 p.m. – after the arena events have wrapped up.

This year there will be a monster truck cruising Reynolds Field during the festivities offering up rides for just $5.00 per person. – “This is a new addition to our program and we think it’s going to become a real crowd pleaser.”

The day’s celebration will culminate with a street dance on Main Street starting at 9 p.m.

Organizers added that there will be vendors serving food all day and night and also a courtesy van on hand to give free rides to those who consume alcohol. “It’s our second year using this van – last year was really successful and we expect it to be more so this year. Family Recipes from the Snake River Plain

Launch set for new book of family recipes and their stories

Recipes passed down through generations. Dishes served at local restaurants or by pioneers.

A new book, FAMILY RECIPES FROM THE SNAKE RIVER PLAIN not only features family recipes, but their stories, which were contributed by 27 regional writers.

The public is invited to a book launch and signing from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 13 in the First Federal Conference room of the new Twin Falls Visitor’s Center.

The event will include readings, giveaways, and samples of some of the recipes from the book.

Published by River St. Press, the book uniquely brings life to the recipes with the stories behind them. NOXIOUS WEED CONTROL GENERAL NOTICE

The Idaho Weed Law (Idaho Code, Title 22, Chapter 24) stipulates that the primary duty and responsibility for controlling noxious weeds on private land rests on the person who owns or manages the land. Any person knowing of the existence of noxious weeds on property owned or managed by him/her is obligated by law to control noxious weeds thereon.

Idaho Code: 22.24.05 County Duties. (1) The county control authority shall: (a) Carry out the duties and responsibilities vested in the county under this chapter and rules prescribed by the director; and (b) Establish and maintain a coordinated program for control of noxious weeds in the county; employ a full time county weed superintendent, who may be a superintendent for more than one (1) county and who shall be qualified to detect and treat noxious weeds; and (c) Designate one (1) of its members as the liaison between the county weed superintendent; and (d) Provide operational and educational funds for the county weed superintendent; and (e) Be authorized to initiate cooperative agreements with other agencies or counties for the designation of or participation in cooperative weed management areas for control of noxious weeds.
