Athletes at the 2022 State Track & Field Championships
This past weekend, athletes from every corner of Idaho converged on Middleton High School to compete in the State Championship events. Competitors from our area only brought back one gold this year with Hagerman's Dalli Elison taking first in the 300 meter hurdles. With her ability to compete the 100 meter dash, the 100m and 300m hurdles, and the long jump, Lewis Clark State College in Lewiston recently announced that Dalli Elison will be joining the LC State Women's Track and Field team for its 2022-23 roster. Assistant LC State coach Cyrus Hall said, "We are excited about her versatility and her young training age." Hall added, "She is from a hard-working family and she is a very dedicated young lady on and off the track. Really what I'd call a blue-collar type of kid. She has outstanding grades and will be getting into nursing here at LC State." Another great competitor at this year's state competition was Gooding's Izzie Stockham who took 2nd in the pole vault and triple jump. She also place 5th in the long jump and the 300m hurdles. Congratulations to all of our competitors! (see the finals results on page 5.)
Soldier Mountain's Mountain Bike Park to Open
The mountain bike park at Soldier Mountain will open for the season May 28. However, the lifts will not turn this summer except for a few special events, so riders must pedal under their own power uphill. Mountain biking will not be allowed during those special events, which include a 3D archery shoot June 11-12 and two disc golf tournaments, the details for which are forthcoming. Besides the special events, the resort is open to riders from noon to 6 p.m. Saturdays, Sundays, and major holidays through the end of September depending on weather. Soldier Mountain is charging riders $10 per day, although it is free for 2022-2023 ski season passholders. Riders must purchase their tickets on its website. The resort will publish full details on its website and social media channels. The resort added a 1.5-mile hand-cut intermediate trail last fall, bringing its network of trails to five spanning a total of 9 miles. One of those trails will be designated as an uphill trail that riders ascend to access the other trails, which include easy, intermediate, and advanced hand-cut trails and an extreme machine-cut jump trail. Soldier Mountain also boasts a skills park. The resort will inspect and maintain the trails and skills park on a weekly basis. continued on page 3... Memorial Day Weekend
Camas Lilies Starting to Bloom
If you are heading into the forest north of Fairfield for Memorial Day weekend, everything is open except Dollarhide - still waiting for snow to melt. Couch and Fleck Summits are open as is the road from Big Smoke down to Pine and Featherville. Wells Summit may be open for the weekend but check with the Forest Service first. Some roads and trails may be covered with snow and travelers are asked not to travel in those places in order to prevent road damage. And... be prepared for cold over night temperatures. For those who are just looking for an enjoyable drive, the Centennial Marsh west of Fairfield is filling up with the blue color of Camas Lilies. The marsh is a great place for birds of all kinds so be sure to bring your binoculars.
Highway 46 Bridge Being Replaced
Work began last week to replace the bridge over the Big Wood River on State Highway 46 just north of Gooding. Built in 1947, the current structure has reached the end of its service life. “We will raise the height of the new bridge approximately 3.5 feet,” ITD Project Manager Tom Logan said. “The additional height will allow for more flood water to pass underneath the structure.” The new bridge will also be both wider and longer to increase mobility and safety. Initial work will first include setup of traffic control and then demolition of a portion of the old bridge. While work is underway, traffic will be reduced to a single lane. Temporary traffic signals will be in place to direct motorists throughout the duration of the project which is expected to be complete this fall. “Drivers can anticipate wait times between two and five minutes when traveling through the area,” Logan stated. “Lane width will also be restricted to 12 foot during construction, and we advise motorists to plan ahead and use caution while traveling through the work zone.” Short-term closures of SH-46 will also be required for different portions of the project to allow for crews to safely complete various stages of work. When these closures occur, signs will be in place to direct motorists through a detour route. Approximately four closures are anticipated throughout construction.
