Magic Valley Hosts Dinner on the Dairy In celebration of its 10th anniversary, the Idaho State Department of Agriculture’s Idaho Preferred® program will host a series of dinners at a variety of farms around the state to promote the quality and diversity of Idaho food and agriculture products. The Dinner on the Farm series will kick off on Saturday, June 8, 2013 with Dinner on the Dairy. Dinner on the Dairy will feature a sixcourse meal created from the best of Idaho’s agricultural bounty. The menu will include local dairy products, lamb, fish, beef, barley, beans, vegetables and more – all sourced from the Magic Valley growing area. In addition, local wines will be paired with each course. This memorable meal will be prepared by Chef Mark Owsley, executive chef of the St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center. Chef Owsley has a long career of presenting outstanding meals at charity and fundraising events throughout the Magic and Treasure valleys. In addition to outstanding Idaho foods, the Dinner on the Dairy also will include a tour of the state-of-the-art Si-Ellen Farms dairy. Si-Ellen Farms is owned by the Roth family. The name comes from Simon and Mary Ellen Roth, who built the dairy in 1995. Today the 7,000-cow operation is managed by Simon and Mary Ellen’s children and grandchildren and hosts national and international guests who come to learn cutting-edge dairy technology and management. “This event is a great way for concontinued on page 10.....

Jacob Novinger - 2013 Art & Soul Winner As you drive through Gooding, just north of North Valley Acadamy, you will see a creature that is seldom see in this part of the world - a giraffe. But don’t worry, this giraffe won’t be nibbling on your trees or rose bushes. Jacob Novinger’s “Flaming Giraffe” was the First Place winner in this year’s Art & Soul Contest put on by the Magic Valley Arts Council. The fourteen and a half foot sculpture is made out of copper and rusted mild steel. Inspired by Salvador Dali’s painting with the same name, the giraffe’s mane reflects light just like fire at certain times of the day. Thanks to the overwelming support from the Gooding Community and the surrounding areas, Jacob Novinger not only won First Place, he was also awarded the Dr. Alan and Fran Frost Frost Family Fund Award of $10,000. 2013 STATE TRACK MEET The 2013 3A, 2A & 1A State Track & Field Championships will be held at Middleton High School on May 17th and 18th (Friday & Saturday). This Friday, field events will begin in the morning starting at 9 a.m. The starting gun for track events will be at 3:30 p.m. On Saturday, field events will resume at 9 a.m. with the Parade of Athletes taking place at 11:30 a.m. At 12:30 the final track events will begin. Admission to the events is $5.00 per day (Senior citizens and students with an activity card may purchase discount tickets). Turn to page 8 for a list of our area athletes and the events in which they will be competing.

Road Closure: For Safety Reasons the Gooding City Council has decided to close 9th Street West between Idaho and California. This section of road along the north side of the river will be close to traffic until repairs can be made to the river wall. Firewood Permits Now Available Personal use fuelwood permits for the Payette and Boise National Forests as well as the Fairfield Ranger Station, Sawtooth National Forest are now on sale. Permits are $12.50 per cord with a 2-cord minimum and a 10-cord maximum per household. Permits will be available at USDA - Forest Service Ranger District offices, the Interagency Visitor Information Center at 1387 South Vinnell Way in Boise, and private vendors in Southwest Idaho, (see attached list). The Minidoka Ranger District will issue permits beginning May 24, but permits for the Ketchum Ranger District and Sawtooth National Recreation Area (NRA), will be delayed until the end of May or beginning of June.

D Daayy r r o o b r b r A A ttiioonn a r a r b e b l e CCeel by Nan Reedy It was a cool wind that greeted the Arbor Day celebrants on Thursday, May 2nd at the Gooding High School patio outside the main office at 9:30 am. Many of those assembled were part of the FFA class, headed by Mr. Woodland and Mrs. Frieberg, pausing on their way to put 200 young rocky Mountain junipers in the ground along the Highway 46 corridor between Gooding and Wendell for a short ceremony to commemorate Arbor Day and the city of Gooding’s status as a Tree City USA Gooding Mayor Duke Morton functioned as master of ceremonies, introducing Ms.Cindy Bigley, librarian, who described the efforts of the Gooding Public Library to open young minds to the value of trees and the environment through story time. Mayor Morton then introduced Kay Hults, Chairman of the Gooding Soil Conservation District. Chairman Hults described the Trees Against the Wind project begun in 1993 that has contributed thousands of trees to the Highway 46 corridor, stating that one hundred percent of those trees had been planted by school kids, just as the FFA kids assembled there today would be contributing to the same project later this morning. The Mayor reminded everyone about the humble beginnings of Arbor Day – a day when more than one million trees were planted. He also announced the award that the City of Gooding had received from Idaho Department of Lands for $200, proceeds from Timber License Plates, and how that is being spent on an Autumn Blaze Maple and a Canadian Red Chokecherry that will be planted in the city parks when the weather allows. Mayor Morton then introduced Gerry Bates, community forester for the State of Idaho, who laid out the requirements to meet Tree City USA status, then presented the City of Gooding, a three year member, with a large Tree City USA flag that can be flown at the city hall. Closing the event, was Joy Cimmiyotti, clerk for the Wood River Resource and Conservation Development who offered the planting team water and snacks to sustain them through the planting project.

Community Garden in Richfield The folks over in Richfield have decide to start up a community garden to help provide individuals and families with fresh food. Many small rural towns suffer from bad nutrition and lack of secure food sources. Community gardens are a way of addressing those problems while building self esteem and productivity at the same time. To enticed into the project, there will be free seeds and a free plot. There will also be two master gardeners and a master food preserver available to help families achieve food security and learn new things about food. The groundbreaking for this project will be Saturday, May 18 at 12:30 p.m. They will be erecting fencing and getting water worked out over the coming weeks, but everyone is invited to come and learn more. Lincoln County History Days This year’s Lincoln County History Days will be held May 25th thru 27th on the Lincoln County Courthouse Lawn in Shoshone. There will be a wide range of exhibitors and displays from antique tractors, blacksmithing, and vintage automobiles, to simple household items, etc. There will also be a parade on Saturday, May 26th at 1 p.m. Registration forms for displays, vendors, and parade, can be picked up at 2nd Time Around Antique Mall or Sallis Back Porch Fabrics located in Shoshone, or by visiting the Historical Society website at www.lincolncountyhistorical.org.

“The Twelve Tribes of Hattie” by Ayana Mathis If there was ever a poster child for family planning, Hattie would be front and center. Like many books on Oprah’s Book Club list, this one is about a black woman in the south. Hattie begins her career as a crappy mother at seventeen and continues on at it until she’s given birth to twelve children. I have seen National Geographic specials where alligators were more loving mothers than Hattie. I thought it was interesting that Hattie was never a victim of drugs, alcohol, or spousal abuse, but she was a victim of Do Nothing. She did nothing to lift herself or her family from poverty, she just stayed downtrodden and hateful at home and let her children grow up to be nuts, sluts, psychos, fakes and frauds because of a lack of maternal love. I am not sure if the author was looking for sympathy for her character but the only thing I wanted to give Hattie was ride to the clinic. This is a must read if you are tired of being happy.

Sonya V. Alania Sonya Vanessa Alania, 18, a resident of Gooding, passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2013 of injuries sustained in an auto accident near Wendell. Sonya was born on December 25, 1994 in Jerome, Idaho, the youngest of three children born to Socimo and Olivia Alania. She was raised and educated in Gooding where she was currently a Senior at Gooding High School. Sonya was an Honor Student and loved playing volleyball and track. Sonya was a member of H.O.S.A. - Health Occupations Students of America. She is survived by: her parents, Socimo and Olivia Alania of Gooding; her sister, Brenda (Javier R. Castro) Alania of Jerome; her brother, Robert (Jennifer) Alania of Gooding; her nieces, Natalli, Sofia and Isabella; and nephews, Aquiles, Kolby, Kaullin and Karson. Lee Collier Lee Collier, age 44; a resident of Gooding, Idaho, died May 7, 2013 at the home he shared with his wife Kari and step-daughter Melissa. Lee was born on July 30, 1968 in Westminster, California, the son of Henry and Mary Ellen Collier. He was raised and educated in Westminster, California, but always felt his true home was in the green, rolling hills of Kentucky. After high school, Lee joined the United States Marine Corps, fulfilling a life-long dream. He attained the rank of Lance Corporal before being injured and honorably discharged in April, 1990. Lee was employed by Glanbia Foods, where he made many friends. He married his high-school sweetheart and the love of his life, Kari (Galbreath), on April 1, 2012 in Gooding, Idaho. Lee was passionate about many things in life, but mainly family, the Marine Corps, Dallas Cowboys, and University of

Harriett V. Davidson
Vernon F. “Vern” Davidson, 82, a resident of Shoshone, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, December 7, 2012. Vern was born on August 10, 1930 in Mountain Grove, Missouri, and later graduated from there. Vern enlisted into the United States Army in September of 1948 and was later honorably discharged in May of 1955 at the rank of Sergeant. During his time in Korea, he was wounded and later received the Purple Heart. Although dad spoke little of his time in Korea, his personal notes and service records reflect how proud he was to serve his country as a soldier in the United States Army. Vern married Harriett V. Eden on April 23, 1953 at the Methodist Church in Shoshone, Idaho. They went on to have and raise 4 children there. Early on, Vern worked at Mike’s Cold Storage, Ward Rawson Chevrolet, Low’s Sand & Gravel and many years at Idaho Grange Co-op. Vern and Harriett moved to Missouri in 1984 and later returned back to Idaho in 2003. Vern is survived by his brother Eldon, of Mountain Grove, Missouri; his sister Vinita (Eugene) Whittet of Bellevue, Idaho; his daughter Sherrie, of Twin Falls, Idaho; his son Michael “Dave” (Mary) of Shoshone, Idaho; and daughter Kathy (Randy) of Shoshone, Idaho. Vern is also survived by 6 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Vern was preceded in death by his wife Harriett; daughter Sheryl; grandson Aaron; parents Frank and Inez; sister Virginia; brother Delmar; and sister Betty Sue. Dad was a gentle man with a kind and giving soul who respected all living things. Dad was blessed with a large helping of common sense, patience and a sense of humor. For a man with a modest education, dad was one of the most well spoken and wise people you could know. A great listener, he was always there to offer support and guidance if needed. Dad loved the outdoors and was especially fond of fishing. He enjoyed many things but certainly had a lifelong passion for baseball and the St. Louis Cardinals. Dad loved to socialize and his keen ability for recall and detail was uncanny. Quick with a joke or a humorous story, he was always up to
Harriett V. Davidson 74, of Shoshone, passed away at her home April 2, 2011. She was born January 19, 1937 in Gooding, Idaho. She attended school in Shoshone. She married Vernon Davidson April 53, 1953 in Shoshone. They raised four children there. She was a mother, homemaker and also worked outside the home. She spent most of her working years as a bookkeeper and also County Treasure for Lincoln County. She and her husband moved to Missouri in 1984 and returned to Idaho in 2003. Her greatest love was for her family and friends, her arts and crafts and her flowers. She is survived by her husband Vern, son Michael and daughter Kathy both of Shoshone, her daughter Sherri of Twin Falls, and her brother Bill of California. She was preceded in death by her daughter Sheryl, and her parents, Harry and Edna Eden. Her final wishes were to leave this world quietly, only to be remembered in the thoughts and prayers of her loved ones and friends. She will be sadly missed, but never forgotten.

Jack Leonard Koonce Jack Leonard Koonce, 81, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at his home in Shoshone surrounded by his loving family. Jack was born on June 20, 1931 to Leonard and Gladys Koonce in Soldier, Idaho. He was raised and attended school in Fairfield, graduating from Camas County High School in 1949. Before and after graduation, Jack worked for his father at their local lumberyard. Jack served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan for two years before returning to the States and served as a Reserve in the Army. Jack has been a proud member of the American Legion Post 0019 in Fairfield for 55 years. Jack married Beverly Vaught in 1951 and together they raised their three children, Debi, Wendy and Bart. They resided in Fairfield until the summer of 1972. During this time Jack worked in construction, farming, and for the Camas County Road and Maintenance. The experience at Camas County opened up a career opportunity to work for the Idaho Transportation Department in Fairfield. In 1972, Jack’s family moved to Shoshone when he was promoted to Maintenance Foreman for the Fourth District of ITD in Shoshone. Jack and Beverly were later divorced. Jack met DeAnn Higley while working for the ITD. They were married on June 30, 1979. They enjoyed travelling, especially to the West Coast, having many experiences they have cherished through the years. Their travels were “B.C., Before Cows”. Jack and DeAnn became partners, not only in marriage, but also as owners and operators of the Koonce Dairy. They started raising Holstein calves on their property east of Shoshone in 1980, working side by side. Jack retired from the ITD and DeAnn left her position there in 1986. The Koonce Dairy became their new career. They also owned and farmed land raising alfalfa for their dairy. In 1991 they received “Patron of the Year” from the Avonmore Company. Jack built the dairy with a lot of hard work and muscle. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t build out of wood or metal. Most of his planning and designs came after much thought and without
drawings. He did everything in his head. Jack and DeAnn’s dairy started very small and grew into a larger “small” one. Due to illness, Jack left the dairy business in November of 2004, but continued to raise alfalfa and sell it to other dairies in the Magic Valley. Jack was hoping for another crop this year, and thanks to John McGhee and Monte Higley for all the hard work this last winter and spring for getting the farm ready, it’s going to happen. Jack was elected as a Shoshone Highway District Commissioner in 2009, serving until his health would not allow him to continue. Jack is survived by his wife DeAnn of Shoshone, daughter Debi (Buz) Vanskike of Jerome, daughter Wendy (Jim) Egersdorf of Shoshone, son Bart (Ginger) Koonce of Shoshone, sister in law Jean (Gaylen) Koonce of Caldwell, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Jack was preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Gladys Koonce; brothers Gaylen and Gary Koonce. The family wishes to express thanks to Maighan Hatch and Mistie Mulleian, the staff of St. Luke’s Magic Valley, and Idaho Home Health and Hospice (especially Heidi and Brandi) for your care in Jack’s last days. You were all great to him. A very special “Thank You” to Dr. Sara Johnson and her staff for being so good to Jack over the years. “Sara, he loved you as his doctor, but more for your friendship and care. Thank you for everything.” Thank you to Jack’s good friend Eddie Rodriguez. Your daily phone calls over the last eight years, making sure he was taking care of himself, were so thoughtful and caring. It meant a lot to Jack and the family. “You are a good man Eddie.” In lieu of flowers, the family asks you donate in Jack’s name to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Idaho. If you choose to send flowers, please don’t include lilies, due to a family member’s allergic reaction. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday May 16, 2013, at Shoshone First Baptist Church, 205 East 5th St., Shoshone, Idaho, with a visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment with military honors will follow in the Shoshone Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Farnsworth Mortuary of Jerome.

Fiddlers Fundraiser A Musical Success Fiddlers Inc. would like to thank all who supported and those who attended the benefit dinner and entertainment with Ernie Sites and Matt Renner. The event was a successful fundraiser for the Fiddlers of Idaho State Championship. Funds raised will cover roughly 35% of the cost of the fiddle contest. We greatly appreciate the support.
