Johnny Lancaster from Wendell at 2013 State Track & Field The 2A/3A District IV Championships were held in Filer last Thursday. The mens and womans teams from Buhl High School took first in the 3A events. The Gooding Womans team took 2nd, while the Gooding Mens team took 4th. The Wendell Mens team took 2nd in the 2A events (just behind Declo) and the Wendell Womans team came in 4th. The 1A District IV Championships took place last Friday and Saturday. Relay for Life
There are only a few weeks until the Gooding County Relay For Life on Friday, June 13th-14th. RFL teams are putting on different events to raise money including selling luminaria bags. You can write your family member’s name on the bag, or you can write “In Memory of,” “In Celebration of,” or even “Proud of You”. Each bag will have a canned food item which will go to Helping Hearts and Hands after the Relay. There will also be a candle in each bag to be lit at the Relay. The goal is to have enough decorated bags to completely circle the track this year, so be generous and buy several bags. Speaker Night at the
Gooding County Historical Museum
Wednesday, May 21st at 7 pm Bonita Gilbert of the Idaho Humanities Council, will tell the story of civilian contractors, many from the Inland Northwest, who came to Wake Island to build a navy base in 1941. She will discuss Wake’s location, Pan American role, Wake’s strategic importance, buildup, the shocking descent into war, and the fate of the Wake men. This saga offers a new perspective on WWII and why the U.S. was caught by surprise in December, 1941. A running slide show includes photos from her 2011 Wake trip. If you have any Wake Island stories or memorabilia, please bring them to the lecture. The lecture is free, donations are appreciated. Refreshments to follow. A question arose in my head, “How old can you be before you are free of having your mom wash your mouth out with soap?” I thought I would call upon the wisdom of my youngest sister. I asked her the question and her reply was, “As long as your mom lives. So, brother, what did you say to mom to make her want to wash your mouth out with soap?” What did she think to think I could be guilty of such? I may of been just asking a question that occurred to me in a crazy thought. Maybe I saw a ten-year-old getting the soap treatment. Maybe I was reminiscing of when a child of 70 years ago when they were getting the home cure for saying something bad. Maybe I’m her brother and she knows the closer to home reality. At any rate, my sister was on to something however she made the deductions. It is that time of year again when a person needs to drink lots of water. Since my mom live nearby where I was working, I asked my mom to wash out my canteen. I figured I could have a really clean canteen since she has all sorts of those bottle scrubbers. I picked up the canteen from my mom and the next day I filled it with water. As I was out in the field working in a tractor, I grabbed my canteen hanging on the back of my chair armrest. I took a large drink of water, swallowing quickly. “Boy, the tasted like soap,” I thought. So I took another drink to see if what I tasted did indeed taste like soap. Sure enough that swallow tasted like soap as well. When I got to the end of the field, I stopped the tractor and called my mom. “Mother, did you wash my canteen out with soap?” Her reply was, “Yes, I did and I rinsed it out several times.” “Well, mom,” I said. “My canteen tastes like soap and I wouldn’t have used ‘soap’ to clean it. But I guess I’m at fault for not telling you – do not use soap.” I told my sister the story of how mom was washing my mouth out with soap. “Well, brother, you can’t blame anyone but yourself! Maybe it is Karma and it’s mom’s way of getting back at you when you were a kid and she couldn’t catch you.” Currently I am blowing bubbles every time I use my canteen. The soap particles stick to the plastic like flies on flypaper. I will have to flush the dickens out the canteen to rid the taste. Some lemon juice may help and I think I prefer lemon flavored water over soap suspended water. I probably won’t need Castor Oil to help make thing flow because I’m sure the soap residue will do just fine. But now I’m perplexed with a thought, “Do I still have to watch my every move because... MOTHER IS STILL WATCHING YOU.” Really, mom, if you are reading this, I didn’t say anything wrong and I’ll take the blame... Do you know how hard it is to just wash your own mouth out with soap for not saying what you should have? I’m my own personal witness. This is my “Cup of Tee” not so pure? Tee Hurd Hiccup... bubble, bubble.

Joyce Louise Knutson
Joyce Louise Mattix Knutson, 70, a resident of Wendell, passed away Monday, May 5, 2014 at her home in Wendell. Joyce was born March 15, 1944 in Havana, Kansas to George F. and Viola Loggan Mattix in her Grandma Loggan’s home. She traveled by train with mom from Havana, Kansas to Richmond, California, On May 15, 1944 to see her dad. Her parents moved to Idaho when her younger sister was 6 months old. Joyce attended Orchard Valley School for the first 2 years and then transferred to Wendell school where she graduated in 1963. Joyce married Will Close on June 23, 1969. They later divorced in May of 1970. She later married Eldon Gale Knutson on April 3, 1971. They were later solemnized in the Idaho Falls Temple on May 28, 1981. Joyce later worked for Preferred Community Homes in Wendell until July, 2011 when she retired after 15 years. She is survived by her husband Eldon Gale, 2 sons James (Linda) Knutson of Cheyenne, WY, and Jeffery (Michelle) Knutson of West Yellowstone, MT. and one daughter Kristin (Rick) Carter of Wendell, ID. Four Grandchildren, one granddaughter Kyla Green of Cheyenne, WY, and three grandsons Justyn Knutson of Cheyenne WY, and Devon and Derek Carter of Wendell, ID. Two sisters, Gloria (Ron) Long of Moscow, ID, and Phyllis (Dick) Brewer of Ridgedale, MO, and one brother Tom (Mel) Mattix of Wendell, ID. Joyce is also survived by many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her father George F. Mattix, one brother Sam Mattix, both paternal and maternal grandparents, Robert and Effie Loggan and Carl and Grace Mattix. Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 10, 2014, at the Wendell LDS Church. Burial followed at the Wendell Cemetery.
Dale L. Trowbridge
Dale L. Trowbridge, 62, of Hunt, passed away April 21, 2014 at his home. He was born July 6, 1951, in Wendell, Idaho, the youngest of 16 children born to Kenneth Trowbridge and Vera Hash Trowbridge. Dale was raised in Idaho and graduated from Lewiston High School. He earned a degree in electronics from Idaho State University. On August 23, 1969, he married Barbara Herring and together they raised five children. Dale spent most of his working life designing and manufacturing computer chips. He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping. He especially loved collecting old cars. Dale is survived by six children; Ben (Elke) Sanborn, Laurie Trowbridge, Holly Legarreta, Tammy Baker, Ryan Trowbridge and Daniel trowbridge; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; his sister, Cora Heath; two brothers, James Trowbridge and Fred (Edna) Trowbridge; and many extended family members and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and 12 siblings. Graveside memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 16, 2014, at the Elmwood Cemetery (9th Avenue and Elmwood Road) in Gooding, Idaho. Arrangements are under the care of Farnsworth Mortuary of Jerome.

There are two possible answers to this equation, one of which didn’t exist until a thousand years ago. Why is that answer important and how has that answer impacted the progress of science and mathematics? ~~~ Without running to your computer and typing in a search, how many of you know the answer to this question? Some of you may be able to solve the equation, but that’s only a small part of the answer. There is a lot of debate about Common Core (Idaho Core Standards). Is it a good thing for our students, or is it a detriment? The answer to that question depends on how you look at it. In its simplest form, Common Core is about teaching the “how and why” behind the things we want our children to know. For too long the American education system has relied on the multiple choice standardized test to assess the success or failure of a student. One of the problems with these kinds of tests is that they only show whether a student knows the answer to a question, or to be more accurate, they can recognize the correct answer from a list. What a teacher really needs to know is “how a student arrives at a particular answer,” especially if the student gives the wrong answer, and that is something a multiple choice question can never do. Unfortunately, Common Core doesn’t really change our reliance on standardized tests, it just makes it more complicated. For example, possible answers to the question above: A: 0 B: 2 C: It shows religious bigotry D: It disproves evolution E: All of the above As strange as it may seem, any one of these answers might be correct, but none of them tell you the “how and why.” This question requires an essay, but you can’t plug an essay into a computer and have it tell you if the answer is wrong or right. A different way of looking at Common Core is whether we want the federal government telling our teachers how to teach? Some of our Idaho politicians are trying to claim that Common Core is not a federal mandate, however, that issue was laid to rest this past week when the U. S. Department of Education sent a letter to Indiana regarding that state’s resent repeal of Common Core standards, The letter said

Federal funding for our schools is a big deal and it just got bigger on Friday when Congress passed the Success & Opportunity through Quality Schools Act. This bill, which passed the house with a 360 to 45 vote, will provide $300 million specifically to charter schools over the next five years. But beware, charter schools that take this money will have to meet certain requirements – requirements they may not like. The idea of teaching the “how and why” is laudable – all teachers should be doing so – but forcing teachers to teach Common Core and withholding funding if they don’t, will never improve education in America.

TAKE BACK IDAHO This country’s original 13 Colonies were once individual sovereign nations; they were Nation States, just as Germany, France, Spain, etc. are independent nations. Our Colonists joined together and formed the Federal government to protect their rights from foreign intrusion. But instead of being the servant of the States, the Fed has become the master. It has run amuck. Idaho State needs a change in State leadership to reclaim its sovereignty, and not the kind of change forced upon it by the present Federal Administration, to which Idaho officials now bow. Idaho’s current leadership has been out of touch with the needs and wishes of Idahoans for years. They promise Idaho values but deliver the goods to the National Tyrants. The following candidates for Idaho’s state seats stand for a free and competitive health-care market instead of Obama Care’s restrictive Federal health care mandates; for State directed education instead of the U.N.’s Common Core intrusion over parental rights; for ownership and control of Idaho lands instead of Federal bureaucratic controls which has effectively wrecked Idaho’s economy; for the people to control Idaho’s destiny instead of governmental inflictions, strings-attached handouts, invoked regulations, and political cronyism. As most of you know, and those that don’t, I am a lifelong resident of Fairfield and have a deep love for this County. I operate a ranch 4 miles northeast of town and, with the exception of college and some traveling, have been a resident here my entire life. I have also had the privilege of serving as your Commissioner from 2001 to 2012. While I have no particular agenda, there are some things I would like to see happen. For example, I feel like there needs to be more communication between Commissioners and the Residents of Camas County as well as other Elected Officials including City, County and State. Good communication is vital to any successful partnership. Our residents have the right to know and understand what’s going on in their County. As you know our Courthouse is an old and distinguished landmark that has served our County well. As time goes on and our County grows, so do our needs. I feel the time has come where we have outgrown our current facility. We need to build a new facility or, if possible, refurbish our current building while adding more space for records storage. I feel this can be accomplished affordably and efficiently and will do whatever I can to make this happen. We streamlined the daily work involved in running the Treasurer’s office by making much of it computer driven; this minimized human error and decreased the hours needed to accomplish tasks. Ann has worked hard to make the Treasurer’s office an efficient part of our county. She is smart, honest and makes it a priority to serve all members of our communities with a smile. I endorse Ann’s race for re-election in the coming primary, and am writing this letter because I would like to see her continue as Lincoln County Treasurer. In light of the recent and on going issues related to Suzanne McConnell as the Lincoln County Clerk, the Lincoln County Republican Central Committee removes any and all endorsement of Suzanne McConnell in her current bid to be re-elected as Clerk. As voters, we ask you to seriously consider these points as you make your choice for Lincoln County Clerk in the Primary Election on May 20th. The following concerns contributed to our decision to reverse our endorsement:
