Track & Field ~ Top Athletes
This Thursday and Friday, the 1A District IV Championships will be held in Jerome with 15 teams competing. Also on Thursday, the 2A/3A District Championships will be held in Filer. With only six schools in District IV 2A/3A, the real competition will be May 15th & 16th at the State Championships. Currently, four 2A and four 3A athletes from our area are ranked in the top ten state wide. Johnny Lancaster from Wendell (2A) is number one in the 100 & 200 Meter, and 9th in the 400. Wendell also has two hurdlers in the top ten: Logan Bowers in 110m (6th) and Hunter Laudert in the 300m (5th). Logan Bowers is 1st in the High Jump and the Long Jump, and 5th in the Discus. Isaac Nebeker (Wendell) is ranked 5th in the Triple Jump. The Wendell Mens Medley Relay team is number five in the state. In 3A division, Brianna Chance (Gooding) is number 3 in both the 100 and 200 Meter runs. Bailey Price (Gooding) is 6th in the 100m Hurdles and the Triple Jump, and 7th in the Pole Vault. In 3A Mens Triple Jump Fillberto Gallegos (Gooding) is 7th in the state, and Brandon Johnson is 10th in the Mens 110m Hurdles, The Gooding Womens Medley Relay team is ranked 9th in 3A track. District IV 1A Standings: In District IV Mens 1A track events, Camas County’s Erick Peterson is ranked third in 400 Meter. In the 800, 1600 & 3200, Hagerman’s Daniel Daily is 2nd, 1st & 2nd. Caleb Owsley (Hagerman) is ranked third in both the 110 and 300 Meter Hurdles. In the 1A Mens field events, Colton Horn
(Shoshone) and Shawn Allbritton (Camas) are 6th and 8th in the Shot Put, separated by less than a foot and a half. In the Discus, Erick Peterson is ranked 4th with Shawn Allbritton in 8th. Camas County’s Issac Simon is tied in first place with Bryce Kostelecky (LH Christian) at 6’ 4” in the Mens High Jump. Issac Simon is also third in the Triple Jump. Hagerman’s Mitchell Goodman is ranked 2nd in the Pole Vault. In the Womens 1A/IV track events, Mackenzie Crist (Hagerman) is 4th in the 200 Meter. In the 400 Meter, Tristyn Hulme (Hagerman) is 5th and Ashley Schoessler (Shoshone) is 6th. In the 800 Meter, Hagerman’s Krista Dace is ranked 5th. Richfield’s Erica Kent is 5th in the 1600 and 4th in the 3200. Other long distance runners to watch are Brandalyn Sartain (Hagerman) and Belinda Marsh (Shoshone). Mariah Lezamiz from Richfield is 4th in the 100 Meter Hurdles followed by Natalie Firth (Hagerman) in 5th. In the 300 Meter Hurdles, Cameron Locklar is ranked 4th. In the 1A Womens field events, the Discus Throw has Samantha McCrorey (Hagerman), Ariel Higgins (Camas), and Allysen Huyser (Shoshone) in 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Ariel Higgins is also 4th in the Shot Put. Richfield’s Mariah Lezamiz is ranked 4th in the Long Jump while team mate, Machaela Brauburger is 5th in the High Jump. In the Triple Jump, Tana Sabin and Leah Stewart (both Camas) are 6th and 8th. Hagerman is the place to be for Women Pole Vaulters. Krista Dace (4th), Natalie Firth (5th), Samantha McCrorey (6th), and Lauren Tiffany (9th), will be pushing each other to higher vaults.

William Ronald Wonick
William Ronald “Ron” Wonick, Sr., 77, of Jerome, passed away peacefully, on Wednesday April 29, 2015, in Boise. He was born February 16, 1938, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of William Wonick and Goldie Normberg Wonick. Ron was raised in Iowa City and attended school there. In the early 70’s, Moore’s Business Forms brought Ron to Idaho, where he worked until retiring in 2000. While working at Moore’s, he met Sandy Jones, and they were married November 17. They made their home in Jerome and continued working at Moore’s. Ron was an avid fisherman, and hunter. He was especially talented at knife making and was a master knife maker. He loved telling stories and spending time at Magic Reservoir. Ron is survived by his wife, Sandy Wonick; his children, Ronnie, Sherri and Teri; six grandchildren, 10 greatgrandchildren; his brother, Jack and his sisters Vicki and Judy; stepchildren, James and Tracie; four step-grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and one grandson. In accordance with Ron’s wishes, no formal services will be held. Arrangements by Farnsworth Mortuary.

Frank Eugene Roath
Frank Eugene Roath, 81, a resident of Shoshone, passed away on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at the V.A. Medical Center in Boise. Frank was born on November 21, 1933 in Franklin, Nebraska, the son of Frank Eldon Roath and Gladys Blanche Roath. Frank served two tours in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, being held as a P.O.W. for 27 months. He later served two tours in Vietnam and two tours in Germany, retiring as a Command Sergeant Major. During his military service Frank married Margie Giles on July 24, 1967 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Frank was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is survived by: his wife, Margie Roath of Shoshone; two sons, Brad Roath of Alabama and Frank E. Roath, Jr. Of Kansas; one sister, Shandra Logerstead of Bozeman, Montana; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Karen; and step-son, Victor. Funeral services were held on Monday, May 4, 2015, at the Shoshone L.D.S. Church. Burial with military honors took place at the Richfield Cemetery.

Fuelwood Permits Available May 15 for Sawtooth National Forest Personal use fuelwood permits for the Sawtooth National Forest will go on sale beginning May 15. Permits are $12.50 per cord with a 2-cord minimum and a 10-cord maximum per household. Permits will be available at USDA - Forest Service Ranger District offices and private vendors in South Central Idaho, (see below). Each Forest fuelwood permit is valid for use on the Sawtooth, Boise or Payette National Forest. All motorized travel related to fuelwood gathering must be in full accordance with Forest Service travel regulations for the area as shown in the Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM), unless specifically exempted in the fuelwood permit. Once the snow melts, the public is encouraged to cut fuelwood early in the year because fire restrictions may impact the cutting season later in the summer. However, early season fuelwood cutters should be very careful with wet road conditions and avoid them if rutting or getting stuck is a potential. Fuelwood cutting is not allowed within riparian areas (adjacent to creeks and rivers). Regulations for each forest are available when permits are issued. Application Period for Controlled Hunts Opens May 1
The application period for this fall’s deer, elk, pronghorn, fall black bear and fall turkey controlled hunts starts Friday, May 1, and runs through June 5. To apply for a controlled hunt, residents and nonresidents must have a valid 2015 Idaho hunting or combination license. Hunters may apply at any Fish and Game office, license vendor, with a credit card by calling 1-800-554-8685; or online at http://fishandgame.idaho.gov. An additional fee is charged for telephone and Internet applications. With the price of things going up like they are, I don’t see how I can afford to be good for a quarter.” During the lesson one afternoon a violent thunderstorm arose, and to lessen the fright of the children the teacher began telling the wonders of the elements. “And now, Bobby,” she asked. “why is it that lightning never strikes twice in the same place?” “Because,” said Bobby confidently. “ after it hits once, the same place ain’t there anymore.” The effects of hot and cold are: heat expands and cold contracts. Enhanced Concealed Weapons Get informed and learn what your rights are when it comes to carrying a gun. This preparatory class, instructed by Sgt. Dave Kiger, will cover the gun laws in Idaho, responsible fire arm ownership, and safety issues. Shooting range practice emphasizes trigger control, target alignment, and holster requirements. Upon successful completion of the class, you will be provided with a Certificate of Completion and all the forms you need to apply for a concealed weapons permit at the sheriff’s office. Class will meet at the gun range on Saturday for four hours of practical instruction. The contest will again be held at Performing Arts Theater, Community Campus, 1050 Fox Acres Road in Hailey, Idaho. Last year the Novice Division successfully added a new dimension and level of participation to the contest. For 2015 we are considering ways to make the most efficient use of our contest hours. Two changes include Entertainment Events (except Train Song) on Friday evening and Novice First Round to be held Saturday, in another room during the Certified Contest. Round Two Novice will be on stage. The Train Song Contest will be last event on Saturday evening at the conclusion of the contest.
USDA Seeks Comments On Conservation Easement Program
Boise, April 27, 2015 – The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will extend the deadline to provide public comments on the Agricultural Conservation Easement Program’s (ACEP) interim rule until May 28, 2015. “We extended the comment period for the ACEP rule to give our partners, landowners and the public additional time to comment on a rule that will be used to implement USDA’s premier conservation easement program on private agricultural lands,” said NRCS Chief Jason Weller. ACEP is designed to help landowners protect working agricultural lands and wetlands. The 2014 Farm Bill consolidated three previous conservation easement programs into ACEP to make it easier for diverse agricultural landowners to fully benefit from conservation initiatives. ACEP contains two separate components: Wetland Reserve Easements (WRE) and Agricultural Land Easements (ALE). The WRE component encourages landowners to protect and enhance wetland habitats for wildlife, improve water quality, reduce impacts from flooding, recharge groundwater, and provide outdoor educational and recreational opportunities. The ALE component promotes protection of the long-term viability of the nation’s food supply by preventing conversion of productive working lands to non-agricultural uses. The official notice of the proposed ACEP interim rule can be found in the Federal Register. The original deadline date to submit public comments on the ACEP interim rule was Tuesday, April 28, 2015. The deadline has now been extended to May 28, 2015. Electronic comments must be submitted through regulations.gov during the 30-day extended comment period. Fire Safety Burn Permits Required Starting May 10
(BOISE) – Starting May 10, Idahoans must obtain a fire safety burn permit from the Idaho Department of Lands (IDL) before starting certain controlled burn activities. The permits can be obtained online at http://www.burnpermits.idaho.gov or in person at IDL offices statewide. The fire safety burn permit is free of charge and good for 10 days after it is issued. Permits issued through the self service web site are available seven days a week, issued immediately, and valid immediately. Idaho law (38-115) requires any person living outside city limits anywhere in Idaho who plans to burn anything including crop residue burning and excluding recreational campfires - during closed fire season to obtain a fire safety burn permit. Closed fire season begins May 10 and extends through October 20 every year. Residents also are encouraged to contact their local city or rural fire department before burning because some incorporated cities and towns may require their own burn permit. IDL will not issue fire safety burn permits within districts where local burn bans are in effect. Additionally, residents should contact the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality for burn restriction information for air quality by calling (800) 633-6247 or visiting http://deq. idaho.gov/air-quality.aspx. If there are other burning restrictions in effect or additional or alternate permits required, the fire safety burn permit web site will provide instructions for Idahoans on how to contact those entities. The web application was updated in April to make it easier for the public to use. Improvements to the web site include new instructions on how to use an interactive map to find, place or move a burn site location, and new ways for burners to add contact information. The web site also is now compatible with all commonly used web browsers and can print burn permits on a full page. The fire safety burn permit system helps inform fire managers where burning activities are occurring, reducing the number of false runs to fires and saving firefighting resources for instances in which they are truly needed. It also enables fire managers to respond more quickly to fires that escape, potentially reducing the liability of the burner if their fire escapes.
