Union Pacific Donates to Saddle Up Lincoln County

News from the Heart of Idaho Camas • Lincoln • Gooding

May 3, 2017

On April 24th, 2017, two special events took place in Shoshone. Union Pacific Steam Train 844 paid a visit to Shoshone for a 30-minute stop as 1500 people in attendance to see the “Living Legend.” The last time the 844-steam train paid a visit to Shoshone was in 2010 on its way to Portland Oregon. This year, the train made a trip from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Boise for their 92nd anniversary of the Boise Train Depot. Students from Shoshone and the surrounding schools, along with many community members and train fanatics, greeted the train with yells and cheers that could be heard over the rumble of the steam train whistle. As the steam boiled from the train, people began having their pictures taken in front of the train. Smiles could be seen by everyone around the area. Bigger smiles were happening as representatives from Union Pacific and Saddle Up gathered around the front of the steam train for a check presentation. Nathan Anderson, Union Pacific’s Director of Public Affairs for the Western Region presented a $5000 check to Lincoln County Saddle Up for purchasing of perishable proteins for the Hope for Hungry Food Pantry and Richfield Community Food Pantry. Saddle Up Lincoln County has now received $20,000 from the Union Pacific Foundation in the past four years for the Nutritional Value Program for Lincoln County Pantries. Lincoln County Saddle Up administrates and purchases meat such as chicken, hamburger, and pork for the pantries. The grant helps purchase food for about 150 families in Lincoln County.

Cruisin’ 4 Our Veterans - Poker Run Saturday, May 13th, 2017

This will be the 4th year of this fundraiser. The first 3 years the money raised went to the Gooding County Relay for Life (American Cancer Society). There will not be a Gooding Relay for Life this year but several people still wanted to have the Poker Run. There are many needs in our community and it was decided to hold the event and have the money raised go to a local Veteran’s group. This group will be decided at a later time. The Cruisin’ 4 Our Veterans will take place on Saturday, May 13th, 2017 at a new location, the West Park (next to the Senior Center) in Gooding, Idaho. All vehicles and motorcycles are welcome. Registration time will be at 9 am to 10 am. The Poker Run will take off around 10:15 am. A flyer and enrollment form can be found on Facebook.com/ Cruisin’ 4 Our Veterans. The entry fee per driver/vehicle is still only $15. Extra playing forms can be purchased for $15. The local Boy Scout Troop #33 has offered to have breakfast at the Park available beginning at 9 a.m. FREE for any veteran and by donation for all others. You can register early or we will have the enrollment forms at the West Park at registration time. This is NOT a race, just a leisurely drive through mostly Gooding County. Everyone will draw their first playing card at the Park before leaving. The first stop this year will be in Bliss at Ziggy’s Express where the second card will be drawn. This year the route will continue slightly west of Ziggy’s down River Road and on to the Shell station in Hagerman for the third card of the poker hand. This year we will decide the next stop (possibly through Buhl) as River Road is still washed out due to our extreme winter. The final cards will be picked up at the West Park in Gooding where you can turn in your poker hand and see if you’ve won any prizes. This is roughly 75 miles. For more information contact Lorri Robb at 208-731-1676 or see updates to the event at www.facebook.com/Cruisin’ 4 Our Veterans.

obit ua ry James E. Collis

Of Woodbridge, Virginia and formerly of Brookings, Oregon, passed away on Friday, March 24, 2017. He was 92 years old. James “Jim” Collis was born April 6, 1924 in the high altitude farm community of Corral, Idaho, the youngest child of Jack (William J.) and Mabel Collis (McCanse). He attended a one room school house for his primary education, they held him back one year worrying that maybe a 5 year old couldn’t handle a solo, 5 mile horseback ride. He attended high school in the neighboring town of Fairfield, Idaho where he earned room and board by milking cows and delivering milk every morning before school. His early years engendered his lifelong desire to “sleep in” whenever he got the chance. He graduated high school in May, 1943. In November 1943, he entered the Navy V-12/NROTC program at the University of Idaho, and then the University of Colorado. He was commissioned an Ensign in 1946 and went to sea aboard destroyers for three years including a nine month tour out of Tsingtao, China. From 1949- 1950 he completed flight training at Pensacola, Florida. There he met a nurse, Virginia Tomasso, on a blind date, and they married in 1950. The next years brought duty assignments on the East and West coasts of the US, the Korean theatre of war, Puerto Rico, carrier duty, and four children. Jim retired from the Navy after 22 years of service and spent the next 20 years working for the Navy as a civilian in the Washington, DC area. He retired from the Civil Service in 1986 and moved to an ocean front home in Brookings, Oregon where he was active in conservative politics, town civic affairs, and Habitat for Humanity. Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Virginia E. Collis (Tomasso). Jim was a wonderful, patient father and grandfather, and is also survived by his son, Bill Collis of Dhaka, Bangladesh; daughter, Sandra and husband, John Muller of Suffolk, VA; daughter, Lisa Collis and husband, Mark Warner of Alexandria, VA; son, Jim, Jr. and wife, Sue Collis of Simi Valley, CA; he was pre-deceased by his grandson John Gabriel Muller, and is survived by seven grandchildren Rebecca, Faith, Madison, Gillian, Eliza, Jack and Graham; and two great grandchildren Luke and River. He was predeceased by his siblings Margaret Hawkins, Isabel Ruggles, and Sam Collis, and survived by many nieces and nephews, three of whom were a great support during his later years Jackie Clary, Marilyn Baldwin, and Dwight Smith. Jim/Dad/Grandpa will be remembered by family and friends as a wise, kind, and principled man who strove every day to do his duty by his family, his community and his country. He will be sorely missed. Jim will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Curry County Habitat for Humanity (zip code 97415) at their website: www.habitat.org. Online family guestbook: www.dignitymemorial.com

Cup of Tee

Since last week I have cleaned my boots multiple times. I’m still loading manure with a front-end loader to spread in the fields. The dairy cows haven’t stopped producing the fully processed feed. In fact, a dairy cow eats about 100 pounds of feed each day. Cow-trary to belief that cows have four stomachs, cows actually have one stomach with four chambers, which processes food pretty fine if you know what I mean. Eating lots of feed and producing milk, a milk cow will drink about 40 gallons of water a day. That is the equivalent of one bath tub full of water. Out of that a cow will give about eight gallon of milk per day with the Holstein breed of cow giving the most. While I’m loading manure most of the cows stay out of my way. There are always a few that have to know everything I’m doing or want to supervise my work. They are at my every turn of the loader. But, to shut the loader down to check something or to fuel it in the pen, every cow in the pen recognizes the difference of the running motor hum. Every cow in the pen has to come to the loader. Cow’s hearing is far better than humans on the high and low levels. My poor loader gets licked to death. The cows have to taste the different salts on your loader and during the process they pull wires off and everything else they can lick. They don’t bite stuff off because cows only have one set of teeth which are on the bottom. In fact, cows don’t bite grass off in the pasture. They actually roll it off with their tongues. Remember the phase, “You have hair that looks like a cow lick.” Basically you have hair that stands straight up and won’t lay down, as if a cow licked it.

by Tee Hurd

Cows have a keen sense of smell. If they can’t taste things with their tongues, they can smell something up to six miles away. Maybe that’s how cows know where their calves are in open ground. Maybe researcher have some of their facts wrong, but I’m not going to lay in a pasture and depend on the cow looking for me if I was lost. If it was so, we would have more cows doing search and rescue, and their names would be Shep or Rover. The intelligence of cows baffles me. They are listed on the top of the animal kingdom as far as smarts. Once again, I think researchers get paid a lot of money to come up with facts nobody can prove. Maybe the reason they come up with these fact is because cows are social animals. They can have their own little cliques and choose the cows they like. I’m glad in school we didn’t have to memorize a thousand cow names (that’s why they have numbered ear tags). Cows can be led up a stairway but can’t walk back down. It has to do with the way their knees work. (How do they walk around hills?) If you want to count cows to go to sleep, cows sleep lying down. They won’t be walking around in your bedroom for you to count. Besides that, it’s hard to count feet and divide by four in a herd. For this “Cup of Tee” I’ll stick to counting sheep with no “Cow Tales.”

by Mike Demick Summer isn’t a time for kids to turn off their brains playing video games The Youth Conservation Camp offers a summer advent u re for youth, ages 10-12, who want to learn outdoor skills and experience a wide variety of fun, outdoor activities.
