NEWS Running Away from the Crowd

In an age where people are beJr. High Runners coming more and more isolated by social media, online jobs, and easy access to entertainment on streaming video (the demise of local theaters), it is important to taking time to root for your hometown sports team. Last Friday, Richfield parents and coaches held an awards dinner for the members of their Cross Country team. Six Junior High and four High School students were honored for their achievements this past year, and encouraged to keep up their training for the next season. In Junior High, cross country racers run a 3K (about 2 miles). High school racers run a 5K (about 3 miles). Throughout the running season, the main goal is to improve one’s time. Cutting a minute off a runners time, is a big acheavement that can not be done without the support of teammates and the encouragement of coaches. Typical training involves running 10 to 20 miles a week, but it is not just about speed. It is about building stamina and practiced pacing. It can be difficult to run this much during the school year when most of these runners are involved in other sports as well. The most improved J.H. runner was Kendra Fuchs (middle) and the most improved H.S. runner was Caleb Sutter (left). Clay Kent (right) was the leader of the team and a State Qualifier this year. J.H. runners were: Michael Newey, Rachel Newey, Kendra Fuchs, Whitney Marquez, Skye Naylor, and Malia Kent. H.S. runners were: Caleb Sutter, Jamen Fuchs, Clay Kent, and Dillon Hiatt (not pictured). With Michael Newey moving up to H.S. this coming year, the team only needs one more runner (5 runners total) to be able to qualify as a team for State.

Soldier Creek Ranch Receives Century Ranch Award

The Idaho State Historical Society and the Idaho Department of Agriculture are thrilled to award Century Ranch status to the Soldier Creek Ranch near Fairfield, Idaho. The Century Ranch Award honors and recognizes families that have continuously owned and actively farmed and ranched the same land their ancestors did 100 years ago or more. The family will receive a Century Ranch certificate signed by Governor Brad Little, Idaho State Historical Society Executive Director Janet L. Gallimore, and Department of Agriculture Director Celia Gould, in addition to a commemorative Century Ranch sign. Every Idaho farm and ranch has a history and special family story. The Idaho Century Farm and Ranch program encourages agriculture families to share their family stories and their century-long connections to Idaho, and its farming and ranching. Janet and her family, John and Katie Dennis, Kaylin Dennis, and Tessa Thompson, presently own and operate the Soldier Creek Ranch. John and Kaylin Dennis’s great, great grandfather, Phillip Ballard, established the ranch in 1882. The 320 acre ranch is located north of Fairfield, Idaho with eighty acres of the original purchase that continues to operate as a cattle and horse ranch. The original home, still used today, was built in 1882, with wood from the Philip Ballard sawmill, which was located on Soldier Creek, north of the present-day ski lift and Pioneer Campground. The wetland meadow has never been tilled. The Century Farm and Ranch program, a partnership program of the Idaho State Historical Society and the Idaho State Department of Agriculture, was created as part of Idaho’s Centennial Celebration. Since the Century Farm and Ranch program began in 1990, over 450 farms and ranches statewide have been designated Idaho Century Farms or Ranches. For more information on the Solider Creek Ranch, please contact Janet Dennis at (208)764.2397. ### The Idaho State Historical Society is a system of cultural and historic resources comprised of the Idaho State Museum, State Archives, State Historic Preservation Office, and Old Idaho Penitentiary and Historic Sites Program.
