Camp Rainbow Gold Finds Permanent Home Organization Aims to Build first Idaho Medical Camp
After months of due diligence, Camp Rainbow Gold announced on Monday their purchase of Soldier Mountain Ranch and Resort in Fairfield, Idaho. The site will eventually serve as a permanent home for Camp Rainbow Gold’s oncology, sibling and family camps. “We feel confident we have considered every detail, reviewed every inspection report and carefully taken the time to ensure the right fit,” said Elizabeth Lizberg, executive director. “We want to thank everyone for the outpouring of support and excitement throughout this process. We’re thrilled for this opportunity to secure the future of Camp Rainbow Gold.” Camp Rainbow Gold said they are now forming a development committee and establishing a master plan for construction and renovation of the property. “We intend to take this one step at a time and be very thoughtful and fiscally responsible throughout the process,” Lizberg said. “As such, there is not yet an expected move-in date and Camp Rainbow Gold will continue to hold camp programs as scheduled at our current leased locations.” Camp Rainbow Gold remains dedicated to its mission of providing emotionally empowering experiences to Idaho’s children diagnosed with cancer. However, Amanda Watson, board president of Camp Rainbow Gold, said they also realize there are other organizations in the area with similar needs for a medically accommodating camp location. “Creating an Idaho-based medical camp presents an enormous opportunity for Camp Rainbow Gold and other nonprofits to collaborate,” said Watson. “We have seen and experienced a growing need for medically accessible camp facilities. As part of our master plan, we intend to consider other medical-needs camps, bring them to the table in the planning process and make the camp available to other organizations to ensure this camp can have the greatest positive impact on Idaho possible.” After completion of a master plan, Camp Rainbow Gold will launch their capital campaign, “A New Place Like Home,” to bring this entire vision to life and has hired Lonni Leavitt-Barker, a Camp Rainbow Gold family camp participant, long-time volunteer and former board member, as campaign manager. This week Jim Dandy’s Pizza in Fairifield officially changed hands. Dale and Renee Eldredge have been thinking about buying the pizzeria for several years. They were waiting for just the right opportunity, and this was it. Many of you know Dale as part of Ski Patrol at Soldier Mountain, but you might also see him in the mountains during the summer working for the forest service. Renee works for an insurance company (when she doesn’t have her hand full of grandchildren). Together, they operated a farm/ranch near Filer until about 4 years ago when they decided to move north to their Camas County property. Dale and Renee now own Jim Dandy’s but their daughter and her husband, Rob and Nicole Loveland, will be managing the restarant. Rob has worked in the restarant business for a long time and hopes to put that experience to work in Fairfield. Beginning this Thursday, Jim Dandy’s will be open from 4:00 p.m. to closing (Thur-Mon). Come on in, welcome them to the community, and enjoy a great pizza!

Rod Howard will discuss what the lifestyles and experiences of mountain men were like and what role these important historical figures played in exploring and developing America’s Frontier-the Mountain West. Rod Howard is a retired District Forest Ranger with the U.S. Forest Service. He has circled the earth and has spoken on various topics in several lands, including Hyde Park in London. Besides being a District Ranger, he was also on State and National level Fire Fighting Overhead teams for 22 years. He has fought fire in all western states and Alaska, even north of the Arctic Circle. He was also the Incident Commander of the Utah Inter-Agency Fire Team.

Public health officials are investigating an outbreak of hepatitis A in southern Idaho. Twelve people infected with hepatitis A virus have been reported to public health officials since Jan. 1, 2019. In 2018, only eight people were reported with hepatitis A in Idaho. Epidemiologists are working to determine possible links between the cases and are encouraging people in high-risk populations to get vaccinated. Hepatitis A vaccination is recommended for people who might be at increased risk of being exposed to the virus, including:
• Men who have sex with men • People who use drugs (injection or non-injection) • People experiencing unstable housing or homelessness • People with chronic liver disease, including cirrhosis, hepatitis B, or hepatitis C
“We’re monitoring the situation closely,” said epidemiologist Randi Pedersen. “The best protection is to be vaccinated, but everyone can reduce their risk by practicing good hand hygiene. This means thoroughly washing your hands after using the bathroom, changing diapers, and before preparing or eating food.” Hepatitis A is a virus that infects the liver and is easily spread by poor hand washing, close contact or sex with an infected person, eating or drinking contaminated food, and recreational drug use. “Most Idahoans reported with hepatitis A this year have been so severely ill, they were hospitalized,” Pedersen said. Hepatitis A can be prevented by being vaccinated, and also by washing hands with soap and water after using the bathroom and before eating or preparing food. Symptoms start 2-7 weeks after infection and can include yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice), fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, tiredness, lack of appetite, and dark urine or pale stool. Hepatitis A vaccine has been routinely recommended for children since 1999. However, there are many Idahoans over the age of 30 who were not vaccinated as a child and are susceptible to hepatitis A. Lack of immunity among Idahoans over the age of 30 may be playing a role in the current outbreak in Idaho.
DEQ Issues First IPDES Permit to City of Shoshone

The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) today announced the issuance of its first Idaho Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (IPDES) permit to the City of Shoshone Wastewater Treatment Plant. DEQ became the permitting authority for municipal treatment plants on July 1, 2018, and this marks the first permit issuance of this type for the state. The permit authorizes the discharge of treated municipal wastewater year-round to the Little Wood River for five years. It also identifies the pollutants of concern and lists the required limits for each pollutant or parameter, monitoring requirements, and reporting requirements necessary to ensure compliance with the permit and protect human health and the environment. DEQ provided a public comment opportunity from November 7, 2018, through January 7, 2019, and is issuing this permit after due consideration of the comments received.

Virginia Walling, 77, a resident of Hagerman, passed away on Sunday, March 31, 2019 at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Twin Falls. Virginia was born on January 26, 1942 in Wendell, Idaho, the daughter of Virgil “Dutch” and Loretta Anderson Gunderson. She was raised and educated in Ketchum and Sun Valley. Virginia married Pete Walling on December 19, 1962 in Elko, Nevada. She is survived by: her husband – Pete Walling of Hagerman; her daughter – Monti Robinson of Whitefish, Montana; her grandchildren – Aleaha Anderson and Casey Robinson. A celebration of life for Virginia will be held on a later date. Cremation arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service - Gooding Chapel. Shoshone Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet Review HAGERMAN AUTOMOTIVE
The Shoshone Chamber of Commerce held their annual Awards Banquet on March 30th to recognize the businesses and organizations that make the community a great place to live. The event started out with a wonderful potluck dinner with many wonderful dishes. Shoshone Fire Chief, Casey Kelley was the keynote speaker and talked about the fire department and all the great men and women of the department. Chief Kelley talked about the accomplishments and the goals for the fire department and dedication that each member gives back to the community. Vice-President, Vernon Johnson gave out the following awards to the following businesses for the services they provided to Shoshone. Awards were given to Shoshone Pharmacy, Little Wood Vision Clinic, and Shoshone M&M Snack Bar. Awards were given to the following organizations for the community services and support they give to Shoshone and the Chamber of Commerce. Awards were given to A Road to Home, Wood River Soil and Water Conservation and Shoshone City & Rural Fire Department. All these businesses and organizations stand out and give back to Shoshone in many ways. Payson Reese, President of the Chamber of Commerce gave out a special award to Jessica Lee for all the work she helped with during her time at the Chamber of Commerce. Also, Payson presented special pins to all the volunteers of the Chamber for the time and effort they put towards all the events and operations of the Chamber. “Shoshone is a great place to live and there are so many people that make what our community is today, and we do not need to change that”, said Payson in his closing remarks. The Chamber Board would like to thank Shoshone Mayor Dan Pierson and his wife, Commissioner Ellis, Alexia Wihelm, REDS Coordinator; SIDEO, Fire Chief Casey Kelley, and members or the Fire Department, Members of the Chamber, and all the award winners for being at the Banquet. It was a truly wonderful night of celebrating those who make our community what it is today. We encourage everyone to go out and volunteer and be a part of your community if you can. It does make a difference.
Camas Quips Gathered by Tee Hurd People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. It is much easier to hit from the outside. ------Danny was hard to miss at our school. A civil wor fuff who forever wore his confederate overcoat, he was a friend to all. When he was passed over during the vote for senior superlatives, many of us were disapointed. Surely there must have been a category suitable for him? The whole school was pleased therefore when the yearbook scviser surprized us with an additional photo. There was Danny, decked out in his gray coat, with the caption “Most Likely to Secede.” ------ Just befor the final exam in my college finance class, a less than stellar student approached me. “Can you tell me what grade I would need to get on the exam to pass the course?” he asked.
I gave him the bad news. “The exam is worth 100 points. You would need 113 points to earn a “D”. “Okay,” he said “And how many points would I need to get a “C”? What do you call someone who can’t stick with a diet? A desserter. When I lost my riffle, the Army charged me $85. That’s why in the Navy the Captain goes down with the ship. ------Wife: Do you want dinner? Husband: Sure, what are my choices?
