Gooding Crew Wins IRWA Award

Wastewater collection systems are made up of gravity pipes, manholes, lift stations and forced mains that gather grey water from residential and non-residential customers and move the flow to the wastewater treatment plant. The City of Gooding maintains a collection system which contains 10 lift stations, 25 miles of distribution piping, and 1482 connections.

To save money, the City of Gooding recently purchased a small camera and a vac-truck to help inspect and maintain the system. Owning their own vac-truck and camera has saved the community the cost of hired contractors to clean and visually inspect the sewer lines.

A few years ago, with the help from IRWA, a Diamond Maps GIS mapping system was implemented. This helps new employees locate water and sewer lines, and helps seasoned employees maintain knowledge for these locations. The city clerks can even use the system to assist customers when need information.

Spending extra time helping homeowners with sewer problems makes sure homeowners have the knowledge to complete their home repairs on their private sewer services. And... if they do not have the understanding and awareness needed to complete the repairs, the city crew is there to help them connect with a licensed plumber.

Throughout the year, we see the city crew working on various project, but a lot of work goes on behind the scenes. Currently, the city crew is working with engineers to a design and rehabilitate an upgrade to the city's lift stations and sections of pipe in the system that need attention. They also focus on getting education for various licensing and attend trainings throughout the year to ensure they are prepared for many various scenarios. This includes the city clerks with field training so they understand more about the city systems.

All of this has led to well deserved recognition from IRWA (Idaho Rural Water Association).

Congratulations and...

Thank you for all you do!

Adapted especially for young performers, this musical features a Tony Award®-winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award®-winner Harvey Fierstein, and includes rousing songs like “Carrying the Banner,”

“Seize the Day,” and “King of New York.” Newsies JR. is packed with non-stop thrills and a timeless message perfect for the whole family and every audience.

Cup of Tee

© I bought a piano from an elderly lady years ago for my daughter. I asked the lady what should a person do to be set in older years. She said, "Collect stuff." I was puzzled and replied, "Collect stuff?" She then said, "Yes, collect stuff. Everyone has a need for something or will want something later on. So, collect stuff." I never really had anyone tell be about stuff being future returns.

With the thought of collecting, I asked myself, "Why do people collect things?"

People, as a species, have been collecting from our existence. We were nomadic, collecting foods and resources for shelters.

Many people collect to reminisce about the past when they had a particular item, or the items remind them when times (in their opinion) were better. Things change - back to the familiar often gets closer to the heart.

In the light of days before us, people who lived during the Depression had nothing and could get nothing. Collecting, for them, often meant having and not going without. Life stability often directs one's thinking. Saving money is a result of multiple purchases of items to get lower individual prices. On the other hand, panic collecting goes the other way (remember toilet paper?). Collecting could be the link between dreams and reality. Does history repeat itself? Many believe it does, unless you are collecting calendars.

People collect because something may be unique. It also may become unique by not allowing others to obtain it. Things are collected

for bragging status - you have what no one else has, or you paid a very large amount to obtain something. Limited editions keep collectors busy. To complete a particular set sometimes follows suit.

A hunt is a process of collecting which gives one a feeling of accomplishment when something is found. A return of money is another motivation to collect. Proving you have been there/done that is proof of collecting.

Inheritance - a legacy left to you could cause you to collect. To clean another's clutter could cause you to collect something you may not plan.

Collecting can ease a workload. For instance, tools or intelligence such as books. Some have specific hobbies that require collections of specialized tools. The mechanics of the way something works or the individual uniqueness of one particular model sets the bug to collect. This could be pickups, cars, tractors, and games.

Perhaps one is unable to do something themselves, thus collecting solves this situation (art, quilts, painting, etc.). Enjoyment of a personal basis such as vinyl records puts one's mind a ease. To ensure memory of close ones (friends and family) one may collect certain things. Paying forward may be a way to help others by initiating collecting.

Many times one collects things as a basic way to voice opinions. These are done so often on tee shirts and hats. They are walking billboards.

I quote the French philosopher, Jean Baudrillard, "In the end, what one collects is oneself."

This is my “Cup of Tee” collectively speaking.

Paul was born in Tacoma, Washington to Iver Olai Jacobsen and Esther Bergersen Jacobsen, a butcher and a music teacher/organist. His father came to the US at age 15, and Paul was always proud of his Western Norwegian heritage. Livestock and fishing were in his blood. He grew up in Morton, Washington, a small logging town near Mount Rainier. Those who know him will be surprised to learn he was painfully shy as a child. Despite his 95 years of life, he remembered the beginning of 1st grade as his most terrifying experience. He did not attend his high school graduation, as he had enlisted in the US Navy and was training in San Diego. He served on a destroyer, the USS Benner, and had just received uniforms for the land invasion of Japan when World War II ended. He credits the end of the war and the GI bill with changing the course of his life.

He went on to attend Washington State University for both undergraduate and veterinary school. He had grown up working in his dad's slaughterhouse and planned to be a meat inspector until a professor assured him, he was smart enough for vet school. His junior year of vet school, he met Roberta "Bobbie" Paul, an undergrad Home Ec major. They spotted each other in the library and a friend arranged their first date. He and Bobbie were married in 1955, a day after they both graduated, and lived briefly in Enterprise and La Grande, Oregon.

From there, they bought a home and vet practice in Shoshone, Idaho. The office and kennel were attached to the side of the house until he and Bobbie built the Shoshone Veterinary Hospital. It was not unusual for someone to stop for a bottle of Combiotic on the way home from the bar. Paul was pretty good with a lasso, but excelled as a "preg tester," claiming he once checked more than 600 heads in a single day. "Doc" would come day or night, rain or snow. A box of cereal on the kitchen counter meant he'd been up during the night pulling a calf or putting in a prolapse. He had many partners before finally selling the practice to Ofer Inbar upon his retirement.

He was fond of saying he was retired for more years than he worked, and he and Bobbie made the most of retirement. His favorite trip was to New Zealand aboard a cargo ship. They spent parts of every winter in Mexico and Central America before purchasing their Mexican home 20 years ago. He was a diligent student of Spanish. The house was littered with pages of verb conjugations, and he was fearless about speaking the language; always to try someone else, if the first listener failed to understand. In Mexico, he and Bobbie found a group of close friends, who were especially treasured during Paul's last illness.

They spent many summers with their Airstream trailer and their float tubes at their favorite Montana lakes. He always said he caught the most fish and Bobbie caught the biggest ones. He fished in his float tube until his late 80's.

He was an avid reader - Harper's magazine and National Geographic would be devoured the day they arrived. His curiosity knew no bounds. He would become interested in a topic and research it for days: science, politics, poetry, history. Everything interested him. He loved conversation; more appropriately, storytelling or imparting his newfound knowledge.

His proudest legacy involves loans to people he knew personally, often to help them pursue an education or set up a small business. Their success was his greatest pleasure.

He is survived by Bobbie, his wife of 57 years; his daughter - Dawna Jacobsen Kramer, MD (Monte) of Poulsbo, Washington; grandchildren - Grant (Cherry) Kramer, Alexa Kramer, and Geneva Waite (Abraham); and four great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his siblings - Ivan, Linnea, Eldon, and Shirley, as well as by sons - Douglas and Grant.

Via con dios, Pablo

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at Christ Episcopal Church in Shoshone. Burial followed at the Shoshone Cemetery in Shoshone. Arrangements by Demarays.

Larry Chester Heil

August 23, 1944 – March 23, 2023

Larry Chester Heil, 78, of Gooding, Idaho, formerly of Roseworth, departed on Thursday, March 23, 2023, in the loving arms of his family & with Shadow his loyal dog by his side. Larry was born in Buhl & grew up on a farm/ranch where he lived for 62 years. He attended school in Roseworth, Castleford & Idaho State University.

In 1964, Larry met Marcella Hedberg on a blind-date for ISU’s Homecoming. Marcella described their chance meeting as an instant attraction likely fueled by Larry’s dark good looks, daring demeanor, & propensity to brag but softened by his obvious kind and gentle spirit. They were married in December 1965 in Boise. Larry moved his bride from a small farm on the Boise River to the vast, desolate high desert of Roseworth.

Larry & Marcella raised three daughters: Stacee, Shellee & Heidi on the Heil Land & Livestock Ranch where he was dedicated to fulfilling his Dad’s dream of building an “empire”. Larry’s goals were to teach his daughters honesty, work ethic, honor, animal husbandry, & stewardship of the land. Larry managed a band of sheep, a herd of cattle & farmed irrigated & dryland acres. The cattle grazed on the high desert of south-west Idaho & after many 3-day family cattle drives the cow/calf pairs summer-pastured on Elk Mountain overlooking Nevada’s Ruby Valley.

Larry’s first love of farming was developed as a young man & displayed by relentless work ethic, natural ability for mechanics & great pleasure of heavy equipment operation. Larry was thrice awarded the Idaho Potato Farmer of the Year. Larry contributed to his community by frequently accompanying his EMT wife while responding to Castleford QRU emergencies. Larry had red & blue heeler stock dogs & notably loved Sunny, Shady, Sophie, Skeeter and finally Shadow who was faithfully always beside him, even in his last hours. Larry had a little lamb named Easter, raised on a bottle, who was his fishing buddy & sat on Larry’s lap, shared the lawn chair & waded into the water as Larry threw out a long cast.

Larry’s winter passion was snowmobiling & racing competitions with his modified Arctic Cat Snowmobiles. He had extreme attraction to daring speed, big trucks & muscle cars with a propensity to “lay rubber”. Fishing lured him to banks of Idaho waterways & the Pacific Ocean. Larry farmed in Roseworth until 2006 when he and Marcella retired to a small Gooding farm on the banks of the Big Wood River. Larry was grateful for the golden opportunity to live his final years near his daughters & grandkids. Larry was especially proud of the country playground he built for his family so he could relax on the deck and gaze out over the manifestation of his years of diligent, hard-working efforts.

“Larry was our rock & our constant, a gentle, kind, generous Husband, Father & Grandpa who is already & forever will be dearly missed”

In his final year, Larry was cared for by his wife, family, & outstanding Healthcare providers/ workers notably Dr. Reid Lofgran as well as Samra Knopp RN, Natasha Dudley, Nickie Cutler MSW & special others most recently from Auburn Crest Hospice. These individuals are gratefully acknowledged by Larry’s family for their tender care, support & even for blending all their tears with ours as we gathered for hugs, kisses & final goodbyes.

Left behind are his wife, Marcella, daughters: Stacee Parke, Shellee Shaw, and Heidi Heil; Grandkids: Justin, Jared, & Jett Parke; Tacee & Jade Shaw; Bradee, Laramee, Zeauxee & Harlee Heil; sister Julia Sullivan & her daughters: Terri Kaminski, Amie Clark & Francie Lenane, & finally, many others who fondly called him “Grandpa”. Larry was preceded in death by his parents & 2 infant brothers.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Castleford Quick Response Unit, PO Box 682, Castleford, Idaho 83321.

A Life Celebration will be held Saturday, April 22, 2023 @ 11:00 a.m. at Rock Creek Celebration Center, 320 Main Ave. North, Twin Falls, Idaho. Please plan to stay for lunch and share stories about our Dad…
