Preliminary Work To Begin On US-93/US-26 in Lincoln County

By Connor Liess, Public Information Specialist Idaho Fish and Game is seeking comments on its Idaho Furbearer Management Plan, 2022-2027. The draft plan is open to public comment through April 20. Fish and Game welcomes input from the public, and encourages references to specific sections or pages of the plan when leaving a general comment. With the last furbearer management plan being developed in 1990, much has changed in furbearer management priorities. During the development of the 2022-27 Furbearer Management Plan, staff identified a variety of potential needs that could contribute to the conservation and management of these species, and provide abundant opportunity for license holders. To inform management guidance for this furbearer management planning process, Fish and Game conducted an opinion survey of all trapping license holders from 2017 to 2021. Fish and Game staff mailed questionnaires to 4,305 individuals and received responses from 1600 individuals (37 percent response). Furbearers are a diverse group of wildlife, with roughly 19 species in Idaho that have been or are harvested for their fur. The opportunities provided by this group of animals reflect this diversity, with trapping, hunting and wildlife viewing being popular activities for Idahoans statewide. Management of these species are primarily conducted through trapping and hunting. Their harvest creates a valued opportunity to license holders, provides data to track the population status of these species, and can help address wildlife human conflicts such as livestock depredation and/or damage to transportation and irrigation infrastructure. The final draft of the plan will be presented for the Commission's consideration at their May 18-19 meeting in McCall.

The initial phase of construction is expected to occur in April on a two-phase project that will rehabilitate approximately six miles of U.S. Highway 93/U.S. Highway 26 from Marley Road to Jim Byrne Slough (4 miles west of Richfield to 1/2 mile east). This project will improve both the safety and driving experience for motorists in the area. “In the coming weeks, crews will replace irrigation structures along the roadway,” said ITD Project Manager Tom Logan. “This portion of work needs to occur early on in the project, before water is flowing through the irrigation system.” Replacement of the irrigation structures is expected to last throughout the month of April. While work is underway, traffic will be reduced to a single lane on the highway. Motorists are advised to watch for flaggers and plan for delays up to 10 minutes. Once irrigation work is complete, there will be a break in the project until July, when crews will return to the area and proceed with resurfacing the roadway. “During the second phase of construction, we will mill and repave the existing surface of the highway,” explained Logan. “We will also reconstruct the profile of the roadway in three areas to remove hills south of Richfield. This will increase sight distance for motorists and improve safety.” Western Construction is the primary contractor on this project.

Identity Verification Letters To Protect Tax Refunds Farmers Markets, Events Collect & Pay Sales Tax

Last year the Idaho State Tax Commission sent over 22,000 identity verification letters and stopped more than $3.4 million in tax refunds from going to fraudsters. This year, the Tax Commission continues its fraud detection reviews that include sending letters asking income tax filers to validate their identity or confirm that they've filed their return. "We take personal information extremely seriously. We won't issue any refunds until we can verify your identity," Tax Commission Chairman Jeff McCray said. "Many taxpayers haven't responded to our letters for several years in a row. They're missing out on money that belongs to them." All income tax returns go through fraud detection reviews before the state issues refunds. If taxpayers receive a letter, they should take the requested action right away.
