News Spring Football in Wendell
At 1 p.m. this Saturday, March 21st, the Wendell Diamondbacks will host the Jerome Bulldawgs in their first game of the ICFL Season. The game was originally scheduled at the Wendell High School but has been moved to the Jim Prince Memorial Park (250 2nd Ave East). ICFL (Idaho Contact Football League) is a semi-pro football league with a dozen teams across Southern Idaho and Eastern Oregon. Teams play mostly for the love of the game, but for many players, this is an opportunity to gain skills to help them try-out for college teams. To maintain their amateur status, players are not paid. The Head Coach for the Diamondbacks is Cam Joseph. Assitant coaches include Wes Scott, Brandon Scott, and Justin Hendley. In 2012, they transition to 9-Man Football which allowed for more venue options and a large increase in membership. In 2014, the league expanded to 11-Man football and added 5 new teams. They also started playing at high school stadiums.
Be Careful What You Flush
Covid-19 or the coronavirus is having a profound impact on our world. Schools are closing, churches are suspending services, and events (including wedding and funerals) are being postponed. And yet, people are flocking to supermarkets to pick through what remains of paper products - exactly what we should not be doing. Is any of this warrented? Six to twelve months from now, we will know if it was the end of the world or a hugh waste of our time. In the meantime, there are some important things you need to know about your toilet. The only thing you should flush is toilet paper. Despite its simple looks, it is specially designed to desinigrate quickly. Other products like paper towels, napkins and baby/cleaning wipes do not breakdown easily, and can plug up sewer lines, especially your private sewer lines. If this happens, it will require removal by a plumber at your expense. Even if something says “flushable”, don’t do it.

Does your doctor go the extra mile to make sure you and your family are healthy? Has your school nurse worked tirelessly to prevent and control outbreaks in your children’s classrooms? Is there a local organization that you see making a real health difference in the community? South Central Public Health District (SCPHD) wants to know about it! SCPHD is now accepting nominations for “Health Heroes 2020.” “This award is a chance for us to honor the people and organizations who work tirelessly to make our communities healthier,” said Pam Jones, SCPHD Health Board member and Chair of the Health Heroes Committee. “A healthy community starts with the residents. We want to make sure the people who go above and beyond are recognized for their care, dedication, and hard work.” SCPHD awards four nomination categories: youth, adult volunteer, adult professional and organization and accepts nominations for residents in Blaine, Camas, Cassia, Gooding, Jerome, Lincoln, Minidoka, and Twin Falls counties. The following are eligible for nomination in each category: Youth: A volunteer, 18 years old or younger, who has made a big impact on the health of their community. Please limit entries to one person per nomination. Adult Volunteer: A member of the community, over the age of 18, who is volunteering outside of their profession. This person must have volunteered time on a community project, initiative, or organization and their efforts have helped their community become healthier. Please limit entries to one person per nomination. Adult Professional: A member of the community, over the age of 18, who works in health care or community health and goes above and beyond in their job or hobby to help make their community healthier. Please limit entries to one person per nomination. Organization: A group of people (youth or adult) who have made a big impact on their community health over the last year. Edith Byrum
Edith J. (Luther) Crooker Byrum, 94, a resident of Gooding, passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at her home in Gooding. Edith Juneora Luther was born on June 4, 1925 in Gooding, Idaho, the daughter of C.A. Luther and Ora Ellen (High) Luther. She was raised and educated in Gooding and lived there almost all of her life. She helped her father and brothers in the cattle and dairy business. Her father began the first Polled Hereford ranch in Gooding County in 1902. Edith had been married several times. Her first husband – Warner D. Crooker was a volunteer fire chief in Gooding. They were married in 1947 and were married for almost 20 years when he died of cancer. Her second marriage to Jewell Woolery in the early 1970’s ended in divorce. She later met the “love of her life” – Herman Byrum in 1980. He passed away in 1986. Edith is survived by: her son – Charles “Chuck” W. Crooker of Gooding; her brother – Martin Luther of Anderson Island, Washington; one granddaughter – Tracey VanBaalen of Gooding; and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by: her parents; four brothers – John A. Luther, A.B. “Bud” Luther and Charles “Charlie” M. Luther of Gooding and Carter Luther of Jerome; and two sisters – Mary A. Luther of Gooding and Oraetta “Pat” Lindell of Twin Falls. No funeral services will be held at her request. Cremation arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service. Joe Bonning, 49, a resident of Gooding, passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2020, at his home in Gooding. Joseph Edward Bonning was born on November 20, 1970 in Gooding, Idaho, the son of Kenneth and Kay (Strickland) Bonning. He was raised and educated in Gooding, graduating from Gooding High School. Joe is survived by: his mother – Kay Bonning of Gooding; his son – Alex (Erika) Bonning of Gooding; three brothers – Dean Dille and Gene (Lou) Bonning of Gooding and Lloyd (Pam) Dille of Nampa; two sisters – Lesa Sharrai of Caldwell and Stacy Hill of Nampa; one grandchild – Zaylliie, the highlight of Joe’s life; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by: his father – Kenneth Eugene Bonning; and niece – Heidi Marie Bonning. A graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday, March 18, 2020, at 11:00 a.m. at the Elmwood Cemetery in Gooding. Viewing for family and friends was held on Tuesday, March 17th, at Demaray Funeral Service – Gooding Chapel. Donald Paul Icke, 88, of Wendell was born in Alva, Oklahoma, to Albert Elmer and Dora May Icke on January 1, 1932. Dad was an extra special man that always had a warm smile and a nice word for anyone he knew, and often even those he didn’t know. He will be greatly missed by many, but especially his family. Dad grew up working various jobs in and around Alva such as, working with his dad at the local Co-Op backing up big trucks at the age of 10 to help unload them. Dad also worked with Grandpa on their trash run around Alva at age 12 lifting 55-gallon drums up, handing them to his dad to empty and then putting the drums back in its place. This was the foundation of dad’s work ethic of working hard every day and being so strong. Qualities that obviously instilled at a young age. Dad was not just a hard worker, but believed when you did something, you did it right the first time and the best you could. He never faulted anyone for trying their best and always had an encouraging word, often believing in us more than we did ourselves. Dad liked to hunt and fish, but most of all he loved to spend his time with Mom, Emily, and the rest of our family. You would never hear him brag about himself, or complain about anything, but you would hear him tell of something one of his children had accomplished or achieved. We were all different, but dad made sure that we each felt special, loved and so supported. The one thing he talked about to everyone, and you knew he was proud, was his service to our country. Dad served in the Army from September 1953 to June 1961. During this time, he was stationed at various places including - Italy, Greece and Germany and served in the Korean War as well as being stationed here in the States. While in the service, dad was in a band that would go around and play for the other servicemen. Dad had a wonderful voice and could play the guitar with the best of them. After returning to the States, dad joined the Mule Pack and enjoyed working with the animals that some considered “dumb”, but he loved them. As part of dad’s service, he was a Sharpshooter and was certified both in Pistol and Rifle categories, as well as being a surveyor for the Army. Dad married the love of his life, Emily, on November 24, 1973 in Shoshone, ID. Each of them brought children from previous marriages, but together they made the family whole. A couple years later, they added me to the mix and our family was complete. Dad always said, “everything will be okay.” Sometimes things were tough, but we always had each other. Evenings would often be spent with dad playing his guitar and singing while mom made dinner. Marty Robbins, George Jones and Johnny Cash, didn’t have anything on my daddy – he could out sing them all. In 1978 we bought The Lost Hat Ranch just outside of Wendell and raised Registered Polled Herefords. There with mom they raised kids, cattle and feed with a whole lot of love. Often times you would see dad walking out across the pasture carrying his shovel, or going out to check cows. We spent many hours working on the ranch, working hard, but we worked hard together as a family. Dad loved the ranch and the work that came with it. He would work from sun up to sun down without one complaint. As the ranch downsized, dad drove school bus for Eaton’s in Wendell. It was something he enjoyed tremendously as well as the kids on his route. Dad was always involved in the American Legion and served on the Fireboard Committee in Wendell as well. He always enjoyed helping out the community in any way he could, as well as anyone he thought might need it. Dad is survived by: his wife, Emily, of 46 years; their children - Suzan (Tim), Walt (Mary), Sheri, Kirk (Kathy), Eric (Sue), John (Connie), Katrina (Greg); grandchildren - Colleen, Zachery, Joey (Jen), Jason (Amber), Jenna, K.C. (Cali), Kirstyn (Lanny), Kevin (Stacey), Jessie, Tyler, Robbie, Matt and David; numerous great grandchildren; his brother - Herman (Leona), and numerous nephews and nieces that all love him very much. Dad is preceded in death by his siblings: Dorothy, Lucy, Alvin, George, Albert, Roscoe, Isaac and Anna; his parents, and his children - Denise, Charles, Bruce and Ernest. A small family memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Donald Icke. Homer Dean Jewett
Homer Dean Jewett passed away from natural causes on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at Family Life Memory Care home in Nampa, Idaho. He was 84. Dean was born September 28, 1935, in Buhl, Idaho, to Homer & Helen Jewett. Dean grew up in Fairfield, Idaho, where he was a gifted high school athlete. He lettered in basketball and football. His senior year he was the Team Captain of the basketball team. He was a devoted Green Bay Packer fan. Dean loved all kinds of music, but especially 30’s and 40’s era big band. He worked for the telephone company for most of his professional life and even contracted after retirement as an inspector. Dean lived and worked out of Homedale, Idaho, for 40 years. After retirement, he was able to spend more time doing activities he enjoyed, including gardening, playing billiards and pitching horseshoes. Dean was known throughout his life for his sense of humor, his ability to tell a great story and share funny, anecdotal sayings. He is survived by his children, LouAnn, Randy, Spencer and Tonia and his brother Gary Jewett. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Angie, and his parents Homer and Helen. A time of remembrance for the life of Dean will be held at Flahiff Funeral Chapel in Caldwell, Idaho, on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 from Noon until 3 pm.

Years ago, I used to haul logs. One particular day when I went to work it was raining hard. In fact, it had been raining very hard, all night long. There were three of us hauling off of this one steep job. The first truck was able to come and go with tire chains on. The second truck had tire chains on and had to be pulled with a log skidder (a machine use to drag logs up and down hills). When I came along, I could not even move with tire chains on. The skidder was hooked to me and no difference was made. Then a large caterpillar assisted by pushing me. I was being pulled and pushed, and assisted by my truck’s own power. I was able to get up the hill. Once up the hill, I was on my own. They thought I could go from there, after all, it was down hill. As I started down the hill, I made my first left hand corner. Actually, I didn’t make my first left hand corner - my loaded truck, trailer and all, slid right off the bank and tipped over. My lunch box was thrown down the hill and broke open. I could see this was going to be a long walk home for me because I figured I was suddenly unemployed. I grabbed my sandwiches and stuck them in my pocket. The boss pulled my truck back up on its wheels. Then the trailer was pulled back up. The logs were down the hill. The boss told me to drive the mangled truck back to the shop so we could fix it and we could get

back to work. I stopped in a cafe in Sweet, Idaho, to have some lunch after taking the truck to the shop. In front of the old house turned store/cafe was the store. In the rear through a door was the cafe. I told the lady I had just wrecked my logging truck and could use a nice warm bowl of soup (no injuries to me whatsoever). A patron came in the store and I could hear him say, “Tee Hurd was in a logging truck wreck and he broke his leg.” The patron came in the cafe and saw me and said, “I thought you had a broken leg.” Another patron came in and I heard him say, “Tee Hurd was in a logging truck wreck and he had to be life flighted to the hospital.” Again, there was another surprise when they saw me sitting there eating soup. It shows one how fast stories can change from one ear to another. Today’s social media is far faster than good ol’ CB radio. One person shows a picture of an empty store shelf and one million people see it instantly. Then we have all those people seeing themselves with no hope. All of a sudden, we have a country that had a scratch that went to a broken leg to needing “Life Flight”! Panic is a loaded truck that heads nowhere except upside down. We need to help ourselves, our friends, and our neighbors as our county has since its beginning. This is my “Cup of Tee” Coronally speaking.
