News American Legion School SchoolAwards Awards

Each year the American Legion recognizes 8th grade students who have proven themselves to be good citizens. The American Legion School Award is designed to encourage the qualities of Courage, Honor, Leadership, Patriotism, Scholarship, and Service. Local Contested Races for May Primary

With the passing of the deadline for declaration of candidacy for the May Primary Election, a number of contested local races have emerged within the Republican Party. In Lincoln County five individuals are running for the Republican nomination for County Sheriff: George “JR” Gregory, William T. (Bill) Irving, Cresley McConnell, Rene Rodriguez, and Verlon C. Southwick. Craig Gill is running for Sheriff as an Independent Candidate and will appear on the November ballot. A petition was filed by Betty Peyman to challenge Roy Hubert for Lincoln

County Commissioner District 3, but the petition was declared invalid because one or more of the signatures were from individuals outside that district. Mrs. Peyman can still run as a Write-In, -- In Camas County three Republicans are running for County Commissioner. Travis Kramer is running unopposed for District 3, the seat held by Ken Backstrom. District 2 (the seat held by Ron Chapman) has two candidates: Marshall Ralph and Monte Cangiamilla. There are also two candidates for Precinct Commit-

teeman, Precinct 1: Tracey Martin and Tylar Ballard (both Republican). -- In Gooding County the race to watch is for Prosecuting Attorney which has three candidates: Brendan Ash, Matt Pember, and the incumbent, Luverne Shull. For District 3 Commissioner, former commissioner Terrell Williams is running against Wayne Chandler who won that seat in 2012. Three Precinct Committeemen positions will be decided in May: Gooding City #2 - Randy Basterrechea and Ross Koyle; Gooding Rural #3 - Roger Cheney continued on page 8.....

Democratic Caucus March 22nd

Next Tuesday, March 22nd, the Democratic Party will hold caucuses throughout Idaho to determine their candidate for U.S. President. You are encouraged to arrive at your caucus location by at least 6:30 p.m. because the doors will close promptly at 7 p.m. For those of you who are unsure of what this process is, a caucus is a meeting where voters engage in debate and discussion regarding various candidates, after which votes are cast. The caucus also chooses delegates to send to the state convention. During the last presidental election both Republicans and Democrats held caucuses, but this year the Republican returned to a standard popular vote. The caucus process can, and often does, end in a very different result than a popular vote. Idaho’s Democratic Caucus is a very open process. If you will be eligible to vote in the November 8th election, then you are eligible to caucus! That means you don’t have to be registered yet, or continued on page 8.....
