Gooding Is 'Capital for a Day'

This Friday, March 17th, Gooding Mayor Diane Houser will welcome Governor Brad Little's "Capital for a Day" event to be held at the Gooding Basque Center (285 Euskadi Lane, behind the Valley Country Store). The event will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. Members of the Governor's cabinet will be in attendance and will join the Governor in answering questions from citizens. Cabinet members will include: Hispanic Affairs, Commission for Libraries, Department of Commerce, Department of Financial Management, Health and Welfare, Labor, Water Resources, Energy and Mineral Resources, State Controller, Agriculture, State Police, Transportation, and Idaho Supreme Court Chief Justice, Richard Bevan.

"Capital for a Day is a great opportunity for myself and my administration to hear from Idahoans about the needs of their community," Governor Little said. "It is an honor to share this tradition with the good people of Gooding and learn how we can better serve them."

JFAC Advances Governor's Public Schools Budget

On Tuesday, Governor Brad Little commented on the passage of his K-12 budget recommendation in the Joint Finance and Appropriations Committee.

"THANK YOU to JFAC for your support of our public schools this morning! You put Idaho students and families first by approving increased pay for teachers and classified staff across the board. We're making the teaching profession in Idaho more competitive and rewarding, which keeps great teachers in the classroom to help our students achieve.

"Last September, we secured historic investments in public schools and workforce training while cutting taxes, and 80-percent of Idaho voters approved the move. This is a 'promises made, promises kept' moment, and I am proud of my legislative partners for putting IDAHO FIRST."

Last year, Governor Little and the Legislature set aside $330 million for public schools during the 2022 Extraordinary Session in September. Idaho voters approved this act with an 80-percent majority. The Governor's budget and JFAC action fulfills this historic commitment to education by:

♦ Targeting starting teacher pay to Top 10 nationally ($47,477), up from #41 nationally when Governor Little took office.

♦ Strengthening pay for all teachers – including our most experienced educators -- by $6,359.

In total, this adds $145 million for enhanced teacher pay statewide.

♦ Closing the salary gap that schools face for classified staff by providing $97.4 million to better position schools to hire critical support staff such as cafeteria workers, bus drivers, and paraprofessionals.

♦ Continuing the state's commitment to raising take-home pay of teachers and school staff by providing an additional $27.9 million for health insurance benefits.

Don't Fall For Email Scams

A revived email scam in the form of a fake PayPal invoice for a Google Pixel phone is making the rounds, and email users are warned to immediately report and delete it.

"Online scammers are always on the lookout for new and innovative ways to trick people into giving them their personal and financial information," writes MalwareTips' Stelian Pilci.

"Such scams just never fade away. This week, they’ve appeared again disguised as Google Pixel phone order confirmation emails," according to Trend Micro.

How does the PayPal Pixel scam work?

The scam begins with an emailed invoice or text message purportedly from PayPal. Since the scammers create a PayPal account specifically for this purpose, the email may, at first glance, appear legitimate. It's not.

In one version of the scam, the subject line may say "Invoice from Pixel (0223)," as MalwareTips explains. The message inside the email will likely say Pixel, a popular smartphone developed by Google, has sent an invoice which is due on receipt.

Clicking on the link in the email will send victims to a fake PayPal login screen that closely mimics the real thing. Once you enter your PayPal login details, the fraudsters have access to your account, from which they can steal personal and financial information.

defray reliance on property taxes.

♦ Putting forward $2.9 million in ongoing funding to improve dyslexia outcomes throughout the state through training and outreach.

♦ Making permanent the widely popular Empowering Parents grants by investing $30 million to continue helping families take charge of education expenses for their children outside the classroom.

♦ Providing $20 million in one-time grants for the Securing Our Future Initiative from the Office of School Safety and Security. Funds will be used to make meaningful, durable, and demonstrated effective investments in K-12 school facility security throughout the state. The budget recommendation now moves to both the House and Senate for final approval.

...Email Scams continued

In addition, clicking through on the link may infect your device with malware. To snag more savvy consumers who raise an eyebrow at clicking through on a link that seems sketchy, the scammers also provide a phone number. In one current version of the scam, that phone number is 1-808-320-5276, Trend Micro explains.

The "customer service" phone number is not PayPal's. If you call it, you will hear from the scammers posing as PayPal representatives who will try to convince you to hand over your sensitive information.

People who receive the email should not click any links, nor open any attachments, nor provide any information whatsoever to the scammers. Instead, users should delete the email and report it as spam, experts advise.

Consumer Protection of Western Australia posted the screenshot compilation on Facebook in February as scam alert, urging people to remain vigilant and to report any phishing attempts that hit users' inboxes. In the United States, references to AUD would be replaced with American dollars.

What should phishing victims do?

Phishing scams are designed to steal passwords, account numbers, credit card information, social security numbers, and other sensitive data, according to the Federal Trade Commission.

The FTC advises those who may have been a victim of a phishing scam to report it to IdentityTheft.gov. This is particularly important when banking information and other sensitive data may have been compromised.

The FTC suggests four actions to prevent becoming a victim. Those preventive actions include using security software on your computer, setting your phone to automatically update, using multi-factor authentication for your online accounts, and regularly backing up your data.

Scot Alfred Berney

May 30, 1957 ~ March 7, 2023

Our beloved son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend lost his long and courageous battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP Disease) on March 7, 2023 at Bennett Hills Skilled Nursing Center in Gooding, Idaho where he had resided since last June.

Scot was the third of five children and only son born to Virgil and Ardith Berney on May 30, 1957 in Twin Falls, Idaho.

He was a mischievous little tow head who took great fun in teasing his sisters and girl cousins. He grew up on a small farm south of Twin Falls. When he wasn't driving tractor or taking care of cows, he loved to explore Rock Creek Canyon with his friends. His favorite sport was basketball, and his favorite player was Larry Bird. Wednesday nights would find him at the gym of the Presbyterian Church playing basketball. He loved racing dirt bikes which resulted in a broken arm one time. As a young man he was a pool shark. He played on the Magic Valley Men's Pool League and in 1998 he won first place. The league was suffering from financial issues that year and instead of the usual awards banquet and huge first place trophy, they had cold cuts and Scot's trophy was significantly smaller than the first-place trophy from the previous years. Scot was so angry about that, he quit the league and never really enjoyed playing pool again. You might say he had no gray areas in what he believed to be right and wrong, and he felt that was definitely wrong!

When Scot was 19, he went to work for Peterson Bros. Construction putting up metal buildings. He later worked for many years as a truck driver delivering freight for USF Reddaway until he retired around 2017. The symptoms of PSP were beginning to show at that time, but he wasn't diagnosed until the first part of 2021.

Scot was very loyal to his family. He took great joy in all his nieces and nephews. They never just called him by his first name; they always referred to him as Scot Berney. We always laughed about that. Scot loved pugs and he owned three – Riley, Toonzie and Gus. He was one of the most devoted dog owners ever born and walked them whether it was sunny or raining or snowing. When Riley lost use of his back legs, he took him to Ketchum and had surgery on his spine. The surgery only helped for a short time so Scot bought him a dog wheelchair and would be seen walking all over Twin Falls with Riley in that wheelchair. He was quite a guy and will be missed by everyone who knew and loved him.

Scot is survived by: his mother – Ardith Berney of Twin Falls; his father and stepmother – Virgil and Amy Jo Berney of Buhl; sisters – Janet (Lonnie) Johnston of Buhl, Brenda (Bob) Greer of Clinton, Utah, Linda (Steve) Upton of Twin Falls and Lori Wayment of Twin Falls; many cousins, nieces and nephews; and his one-eyed goof ball dog – Gus.

Scot was preceded in death by: his paternal grandparents – Vernon "Buzz" and Bessie Berney; his maternal grandparents – Benjamin and Winnie Dell Hampton; and his beloved dogs – Riley and Toonzie.

The family would like to sincerely thank the staff and management of Chardonnay Assisted Living in Twin Falls where Scot resided for one year; and the staff and management of Bennett Hills Skilled Nursing in Gooding for all their excellent care, compassion and friendship to Scot and to his family. We would also like to thank Dr. Gies and all his staff at North Canyon Medical Center in Gooding for the excellent care they gave to Scot.

A private family viewing will be held on Thursday, March 16, 2023 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Demaray Funeral Service – Gooding Chapel. Graveside service will be held on Friday, March 17, 2023, at 11 a.m. at the Twin Falls Cemetery in Twin Falls with Pastor Clint Lutz presiding. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Scot's name to the Twin Falls Animal Shelter. www.demarayfuneralservice.com
