Pizza & Wings in Wendell

After spending most of his life behind the wheel of a semi-truck, Mike Barnett of Wendell decided hang up his keys and make a different kind of dough... pizza dough.

The Mushers ended the 1st quarter of the game 17 to 6 and never let go of the lead in their effort to put a second State Basketball title in their trophy case. The only other time Camas took the title was 50 years ago in 1974. The victory was especially sweet after loosing the State Football title to Kendrick last November. In their first game of the district tournament in February, Tristen Smith scored his 1000th career point. Not to be outdone, Emmett Palan scored his 1000th point with his final basket in the state championship game.

New York Pizza & Wings is now open at 21 South Idaho Street (the little building next to the Ace Theater). With fresh made crusts and sauce, Mike's first week and a half have been non-stop customers. His signature pizza pies include cheese, white sauce w/garlic, Sicilian, marinara, and the Upside Down pizza have been flying out the door with fresh and boneless wings.

Coach Frostenson couldn't be more proud of his boys. “We’ve gotten close before and had our hearts broken, but for the kids to walk in and do what they needed to do to win that game is huge.”

“This is the goal we worked all year for, our whole lives actually,” said Troy Smith. “Some of us are never going to walk on a basketball court again, but we’re walking out state champions, and that’s what it’s all about.”

Cup of Tee by

Usually on my birthday, I'm working. My birthday was on Friday this year and I believe I went out to dinner that evening. A couple of the grandkids wanted to have a birthday cake for me. I was asked if I could be available for a surprise birthday cake. I said I would be and planned for the Saturday after my birthday the surprise.

My friend was hosting the surprise birthday cake, and for some reason, she could only find one of her round cake pans for one third of a triple layer cake. I was advised the surprise cake would be a little later than planned. My schedule was adapted to meet the surprise the kids wanted to do - they were decorating with construction paper.

I stopped at the grocery store and picked up the ice cream. When I got to my friend's house, I basically went downstairs to watch some TV to keep the surprise. The ice cream was a little melted around the edges... a perfect time to enjoy. I took a bowl downstairs with me.

My five-year-old granddaughter came down and saw me watching TV. "What are you doing down here, grandpa?" she asked. "Don't tell me, I know you are down here so you don't see our surprise birthday cake." With all her excitement, she accidentally spilt the beans. I pretended it

Tee Hurd

went over my head.

After a trip upstairs, she was back down. "Grandpa, it's your birthday and you need a messog." I said "you mean a massage." "Yes, grandpa, a messog. I going to give you one."

She jumped up behind me and grabbed the top of my shoulders with her tiny hands. "Grandpa, how long do I have to do this?" I said, "Honey, that's a gift from you and you can do what you want."

"I'm going to give you a messog while I count to one hundred." She started counting. "One, two, three, four, five..." all the way up to twenty. Once she reached twenty, the count went... one hundred one, one hundred two, one hundred three, until she reached one hundred ten.

"Grandpa, I took the short route to one hundred." She was then out and gone back upstairs.

When counting, I don't know if I was ever taught a short route to one hundred. It must be some new algebra or math I have missed out on. It's not the count in life that counts, but the love in the count of life that counts.

I haven't taken any short cuts to my current birthday age, but I'm thinking maybe I'll use some of this new math to add a few more years to get towards one hundred.

This was my “Cup of Tee” with a three layer cake.

Idaho Presidential Caucus Election Results 2024

On Saturday, Idaho held its Republican presidential caucus for the first time since 2012. Former President Donald Trump won every caucus in the state with 85% of the votes to claim 32 delegates. Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley took 13% of the votes.

This Tuesday, March 5th, is Super Tuesday with a total of 15 states and one territory going to the polls. And just in time, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its opinion regarding Colorado's attempt to remove Donald Trump from that state's ballots.

The Supreme Court said "Congress is empowered by the Constitution to pass appropriate legislation to enforce the Fourteenth Amendment but that states enjoy no such power in the case of national elections." The Court added that, "We conclude that States may disqualify persons holding or attempting to hold state office, but States have no power under the Constitution to enforce Section 3 with respect to federal offices, especially the Presidency."

While there were a few minor differences in their opinions, all nine members of the court agreed that the Colorado Supreme Court's decision must be overturned. It is worth noting that Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson indicated in their concurring opinion that allowing Colorado to unilaterally remove a presidential candidate would "create a chaotic state-by-state patchwork, at odds with our Nation's federalism principles."

The Court did not directly address the question of whether President Trump engaged in insurrection, but they stated, "States cannot abridge privileges or immunities, deprive persons of life, liberty, or property without due process." Since Donald Trump has not been tried or convicted of "insurrection," the Colorado high court errored in its decision.

Small Farms are Disappearing from the Mountain States Policy Center

Farm numbers across the United States are dwindling and the mountain states are no exception. Our country lost 7% of farms from 2017 to 2022, and all of the mountain states were above the national average. As a farmer in the region, I understand the stress of this profession, and if our country continues on its current trajectory our region’s agricultural future looks bleak – more consolidation and less food security.

From 2017 to 2022, Idaho, Montana, Washington, and Wyoming all experienced a decrease in the total number of farms. Wyoming saw the largest decrease at 12% of farms, totaling 1,394 farms in the state that chose to end operations. Montana and Washington had the second largest decreases of 10 percent, a raw total of 2,782 and 3,717 farms, respectively. Idaho trailed behind at 8 percent with 2,119 farms ending operations.

The decrease in farms over the last five years is the largest seen between two National Agricultural Censuses. This decrease in farming operations is seen despite the highest net farm income recorded during this time frame. Why, during a period of historical profits were farms ending operations?

Look at the breakdown of farm number changes by income. According to the census data in 2022 and 2017, farm losses were highest in the lowincome categories. The smaller farms are the ones disappearing at upwards of 40% and close to 50% in the case of Idaho farms with incomes between $200,000 to $499,999. Farm number losses are huge for operations under half a million dollars in total sales.

But the trend reverses for farms with revenue above $500,000. Almost all income brackets above $500,000 saw an increase in farming operations (except one income bracket in Montana). With the largest increases in the top income category of $10,000,000 or more.

The loss of farms isn’t driven by only one issue. Regulations, input costs, pandemic changes, trade disruptions, aging operators, and agricultural land development are all pushing out farms. The smallest farms are experiencing the greatest challenges. Some farms have risen to the occasion and grown to survive the market variance. However, there are still many farms ending operations.

Everyone should be concerned about the loss of farms in the United States. The majority of our food production is grown by the largest operations, so volume isn’t the concern... but security is. Just look at the result of the COVID shutdowns. Many of the large operations experienced plant and processing shutdowns for weeks at a time from outbreaks among employees, and grocery store shelves went empty.

...Small Farms are Disappearing continued

Having many producers involved in food production insulates end consumers from supply disruptions. One producer will likely experience operational challenges throughout the growing season be it weather, trade, policy, or labor challenges. If only a few producers are present in the market supply disruptions are inevitable. However, if many producers, both small and large, are actively engaged in the industry, it insulates the end consumer from supply disruptions, because it is unlikely many producers face the same production challenges.

Challenges are increasing for farm operations as this last year was expected to be one of the largest declines in net cash farm income in history, the largest in nominal terms and third largest adjusted to inflation. Farms need to become resilient to market fluctuations like the one experienced in 2023.

Policies in the mountain states need to encourage agriculture. Efforts should be made to ease the burdens of remaining in the agricultural industry for small producers like decreasing regulatory burdens, encouraging agricultural land to remain in production at reasonable rental rates, improving labor supply restrictions, and encouraging trade agreements benefiting agricultural products. Before policies are adopted it is worth questioning what the result will be for small producers, because those are the operations least likely to survive.
