Mushers Take District Championship
The Camas Mushers went into the 1AD2 District Tournament ranked number 3 in the conference. After knocking off Sun Valley (45-49) and Castleford (60-48), the faced off against the #1 Carey Panthers for the Championship game last Wednesday. The Panthers were sent packing with the Mushers winning 57 to 45 and pushing Camas to #1 in the 1AD2 Division. The last conference championship for Camas was in 1998 and they haven't been to the State tournament since 2005. Both Camas and Carey head to the State Tournament held at Caldwell High School this week. Camas will play Cascade in game one of the tournament on Thursday, March 3rd, at noon. Carey (#2) will play Timberline at 7 p.m. The Championship game will be held on Saturday, March 5th (9:30 p.m.) at the Ford Idaho Center. No tickets will be available at the gate - must be purchased online at gofan.co/app/school/IDHSAA
Nominate Your "Health Hero" For A Regional Award
The COVID-19 pandemic has hurled a number of obstacles at our community in the last two years. Through it all, we've seen neighbors rise to the occasion--going above and beyond in their jobs, finding creative ways to fill health needs in their area, and sacrificing personal time as they help protect their community. Perhaps more now than ever before, it's important to recognize these people and the contributions they've made. South Central Public Health District (SCPHD) is now accepting nominations for our local health heroes who went the extra mile to protect their community in the last two years. Historically, SCPHD has honored one organization or person for each of the four health hero categories: Youth, Adult Volunteer, Adult Professional, and Organization. This year, SCPHD will honor two nominees in each category for a total of eight winners. "We've seen so many incredible people serve their communities in critical ways over the last two years," said Pam Jones, South Central Public Health Board member and Chair of the Health Heroes Committee. "This has been an especially difficult time for so many, and we want to make sure the people who go above and beyond are recognized for their care, dedication, and hard work." The Health Hero award is for residents in south central Idaho. This region includes Blaine, Camas, Cassia, Gooding, Jerome, Lincoln, Minidoka, and Twin Falls counties. Nominees must live in one of these counties to be eligible for the award. Nominations are due by the end of the business day on March 31st, 2022. All mailed nominations must be postmarked by March 31st, 2022. Health Hero award winners will be honored on May 18th, 2022, at the SCPHD Regional Board of Health meeting.

32nd Annual St. Patrick’s Fun Run & Walk Get ready for the St. Patrick’s Fun Run & Walk to be held March 12th. It will be a day of running, skipping, and walking followed by a celebration of food, fun, drink and laughter at Malad Gorge State Park (Tuttle, Idaho)… and don’t forget the participant achievement awards, door prizes, and awards for Best Costume, Team with the Most Members, and Best Hydration Station! Registration will be from 8:30 to 11 a.m. with a welcome meeting at 9:15 a.m. Half Marathon starts at 9:30 a.m. 5.5 Mile Run (10:30), 3.5 Mile Run (10:45), and 3.5 Mile Walk starts at 11 a.m. Fees are $30 to $60. Chip timing will be provided by Vector Timing. Live optional GPS tracking allows participants to see live stats while racing, including pace and distance remaining to the finish line. Audible queues will keep you posted so you can focus on the road ahead, rather than your phone for updates. Awards will be presented to the top three overall finishers, men and women, in each event. Have you ever tasted an avocado and wondered, where do avocados come from? I have! First of all, avocados are very healthy. They are healthier than bananas! This is because avocados have more vitamin k, minerals, protein, and calories. Did you know that there is another word for avocado? Another word is an alligator pear. It is called an alligator pear because of the avocados green skin and pear shape. The Ahuacatl Jamaicans called avocados a pear because of its green skin. Avocados were discovered by the Aztects around 5,000 BC. This means avocados have been around for about 7,000 years. That's a long time! If you want to grow an avocado tree, here are some tips. If your avocado seed is cracked, it will still grow. You just have to wait. You can grow an avocado tree by setting the seed in water in your home. When you see little shoots coming from the seed, you can place it in dirt near direct sunlight and wait for it to grow. You have to water it often. You can place it in dirt inside or outside. © Last week I mentioned about our truckers throughout the United States heading to our country's capital for a peaceful protest - happening shortly. When you have more than one truck or group of trucks, it would be called a Convoy. I am not in the group of trucks but I did do things by myself or one truck. I guess one truck would be called a one-voy. Early last week it was 22 and two inches of snow fell immediately. I had a load of hay in a 48 foot trailer and I had to deliver it from its departure to its destination (Boise Valley Feeders) which was about 25 miles. The feedlot sits down in a valley. To get there from any of three directions one must go up a hill. I was spinning a little pulling up one of the hills, breaking my own trail in the fresh snow. As I started to turn down hill, the truck and trailer decided it would try to do a "jack knife", a situation where truck and trailer are going different directions. I said, "NO, NO, NO! This is not what I want to do." After some work I got the truck back under the trailer and was pulling in downhill. As I saw it, it was going to be, "Hay

mess on roadway. One clean-up crew respond." This was a truck protest I did not want on my one-voy. I got to the scale house to weigh in and asked the scale lady how many trucks had been down the hill before me. She said I was the only one. I told her I didn't need to hear that. I really didn't want to be the leader in my so called one-voy. I waited until a few feed trucks went up and down the hill. Then I saw a cattle hauler roll down to the feedlot. I didn't want to make the same slide twice to be a leader and a follower of my one-voy. Yesterday, while hauling a load of hay back to the same feedlot, my back window apparently received a rock. The glass shattered and the rough road blew the window out. The muffler was right next to the open hole in my truck. I could not even hear myself think. It was another small peaceful protest in my one-voy (one truck). Today will be a temporary duct tape and cardboard kind of day. This is my “Cup of Tee” on the highway doing my own one-voy.

Karma Metzler Fitzgerald to Run For House of Representatives
Karma Metzler Fitzgerald, a longtime community organizer and agricultural advocate in Lincoln County, today announced her candidacy for the Idaho House of Representatives. Fitzgerald, a resident of Shoshone, is seeking to represent Seat B in District 26, which includes Lincoln, Jerome, and Blaine Counties. Verline Helen Atwood Lee
Verline Helen Atwood Lee, 81, of Wendell, Idaho passed away with her loving family by her side on Wednesday, February 9, 2022 (just 11 days shy of her 82nd birthday) at St Luke’s Hospital in Twin Falls from complications of Lymphoma. Verline was born Tuesday, February 20, 1940, to Leona Katherine Tanner and Lewis Emil Atwood and raised at their home in Parker, Idaho. Verline attended schools at Parker Elementary in Parker, ID and South Freemont High School in St Anthony, ID. In 1955, Verline met the love of her life, Roger Jay Lee, at a social gathering and on May 25, 1956 she became his loving wife and were married for 60 wonderful years. They were sealed in the Boise Temple on May 25, 1996. To this union, two children were born, Janet and Roger “Shane”. Being that her husband, Roger, worked construction, they would have to move to wherever his job took them. So, each time they had to move Verline would pack up the house and the kids and they would all start singing the song "I've Been Every Where Man" to begin their next adventure. When the kids got older Verline decided they needed to settle down and in 1977 they chose Wendell, Idaho as their home. Over the years Verline had many hobbies. She loved to read, crochet, cook, travel, and most of all spend time with her family and friends. Her hands were never idle and would always find something to keep her active. She loved working every season in the fish hatcheries and spud harvests, as well as helping out by giving a ride, helping others, or just doing whatever she felt was needed of her. One of her favorites was doing things for the church. She was a very active member of the Wendell Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served many different offices. She is survived by her two children: Janet Hochstrasser and Roger Shane (Sheila) Lee, both of Twin Falls, ID; seven grandchildren: Joylene Lynn of Kimberly, ID; Rudy (Searra) Hochstrasser of Filer, ID; Kymberly (Wade) Lange of Buhl, ID; Jordanna (Josh) Kimball of Kenai, Alaska; and Alesha (Cody) Wood, Shyanne Lee, and Debra Hochstrasser all of Twin Falls, ID; eight great-grandchildren: Nicholas Lynn, Ashlee Lange, Dastin Wood, Kandyce Lynn, Easton Wood, Blayne Kimball, Lexus-Jo Kimball, and Ivory Hochstrasser; two sisters: Loy Howell of Great Falls, MT and Enith Larson of Wendell, ID; one brother, Jay Atwood of Meridian, ID; and many extended family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years, Roger Jay Lee; her parents, Leona and Lewis Atwood; sister, Leatha Atwood; brother, Milton Atwood; and 4 great-grandsons, Ashtyn Lynn, Jakub Kimball, and twins, Gary and Nolan Hochstrasser. Anita Rae Douville-Blocker
Anita Rae Douville-Blocker, 72, of Hagerman, Idaho, went home to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on Wednesday, February 9, 2022. She was surrounded by her family, just the way she wanted it. Anita was born October 30, 1949 in Altona, Manitoba, Canada, to Leon and Nellie Lupien, of Neche North Dakota. She was one of 15 siblings. Anita was preceded in death by her parents Leon and Nellie Lupien, sisters Diane Lupien, Leona Mondor, brother Jack Lupien, and two unnamed siblings who passed at birth. Anita graduated from Neche Public High school in 1967. Soon after she married Harvey Douville, also from Neche N.D., on June 27, 1967. They immediately moved to California where they raised their three children. She worked as a waitress at the restaurant Pats Kitchen in Norco, California for many years until she went back to school in 1997 and got her degree as a Respiratory Therapist, where she then worked for nearly 20 years until she retired. Anita and Harvey divorced in 1991. Anita re-married to her current husband Edward Blocker Sr. on October 28, 2006. In 2013 they moved from San Bernardino, California to Hagerman, Idaho to be closer to their grandkids, and began attending Calvary Chapel Hagerman with her family. Anita loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She also was loved by her church family and will be greatly missed. She is survived by: her husband - Edward Blocker Sr.; her brothers - Bill Lupien, Les Lupien and Larry Lupien; her sisters - Isabel Bekkedahl, Judy Mondor, Shirley Miranda, Mary Lou Urlaub, Dorthy Snell and Audrey Smith-Lupien; her three children - Dion (Cindy) Douville, Darla (Eric) Keen and Trevor (Gina) Douville; her seven grandkids - Joshua (Erin) Douville, Cody (Katie) Douville, Julianna (Philip)Watkins, Jarred Douville, Sophia Keen, Samara Douville, and Gabrielle Douville; and six great grandchildren - Benjamin, Olivia, Luke and Ava Douville, Oliver Watkins and Claire Douville. Anitas's Celebration of Life was held on Friday, February 25, 2022 at Calvary Chapel Hagerman at 241 State Street in Hagerman. Eugene Philip Swenson
Eugene Philip Swenson, 87, of Hagerman went to be with the Lord on February 24, 2022. Gene was born March 30, 1934, in Firth, Idaho to parents, Philip and Edith Swenson. Gene grew up in Firth where his love for farming started with him helping his father on their family farm with his four brothers and two sisters. He went out on his own to farm in Firth, Mountain Home, and Hagerman. He was passionate about the farming community. Gene married the love of his life, Marilyn McFee on November 20, 1953. They raised four children. Gene's love for the Lord led him on many maps missions and when he could no longer travel, he helped support many others going on their missions. He also loves the Jewish ministries and was a supporter of Jewish voice for many years up until his death. Gene was also one of the founding fathers of the Hagerman Christian Center with his dear friends, Jim and Bob Davis. He was well loved by anyone that he met. Gene is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marilyn Swenson; their children, Vernon (Trina) Swenson of Lewiston, Sheila Summers of Boise, Sherri (Oscar) Campa of Gooding, and Sharlene (Kenneth) Taylor of Hagerman. He loved spending time with all of his 13 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one grandson. David Stewart Hinds, 82, a resident of Bliss, passed away on Friday, February 4, 2022 at the North Canyon Medical Center in Gooding. David was born December 3, 1939, in La Jolla California. He was informed by the times and place of his birth, which produced both a solid work ethic and love of the outdoors and beach play. Childhood days often began with newspaper deliveries at dawn and ended with body surfing. Summers included lawn mowing jobs and camping in the reachable Sierras. He had a mathematical mind that served him well in later years working for California State Highways on a crew surveying for the highways built around Bishop, California, and as a biologist teacher and researcher using analytics and statistics. Two deficits were hearing acuity and fine motor coordination, but he turned those to advantages, too. He didn’t wash dishes because plates and glasses were inevitably broken. He almost flunked English and Latin yet earned a scholarship to Pomona College (class of 1962). He could not carry a tune but loved music especially with solid rhythm. Athletics were a love: he was co-captain of his Pomona College Football Team, active in rugby, beach volleyball, and watersports. Post college years were filled with summer camping and backpacking - especially to places near good fly-fishing waters. An intellectual curiosity made him a fine listener, avid reader, and lifter of end of the day glass. Dave earned a PhD from the University of Arizona 1969, and he became a Professor at California State University Bakersfield (founding faculty 1970, Chairman of Biology 1986-88). He was recognized with many awards including: California State University 1997 Faculty Research Award, Fulbright Senior Scholar Award to Australia 1985, Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and CSU nominee 2001 Wang Family Excellence Award. He loved his family. They greatly love and miss him. Spouse: Elizabeth Annette Halpern Hinds. Burrel D. Williams

Burrel D. Williams passed away on Tuesday, Feb.15, 2022 at the age of 90. Burrel was born on August 30, 1931 in the old school house six miles north of Shoshone that was later to become part of the family farm. He always took great pride in growing things. Whether it be crops, boys into men, rookies into veterans or a town into a community. Burrel took the reins to the family farm at a very early age due to the passing of his father. The farm flourished for many years. Growing from 200 acres to 1200. Annual beef production grew from less than 50 to thousands. Unfortunately, it all came crashing down in the late 70s due to plummeting prices, steep interest rates and a harsh winter. While the farm was a large part of his life, he made time for the important things. Burrel enjoyed serving the community in a variety of ways. One such way was as Lincoln County commissioner for 24 years. As was his nature, he rolled up his sleeves and went to work. Beyond the administrative duties, Burrel made late night trips to fix things at the Convalescent Center and helped with sandbagging when the river threatened to flood the town. Burrel also provided service to the community through coaching. Many Shoshone youth benefited from learning the fundamentals of baseball from him. The lessons often applied more to life than baseball. Success comes from hard work, being prepared, doing the little things and getting right back up when you fall. I think Tom Hanks probably took his famous line from Burrel. There's no crying in baseball. Apart from coaching, Burrel was infamous in the Magic Valley sporting community for his role wearing the striped shirt of a referee. He was often called upon to officiate the hotly contested rivalries. Never refraining from calling them as he saw them, booing by partisan fans would occasionally follow. Burrel's multi-faceted life is not easily summarized. Everyone experienced him from their own unique vantage point. He was a son, brother, father, grandfather, friend, coach, competitor and neighbor. The undeniable unifying portrait is that of a man that lived life to its fullest. He gave more than he took. He complimented more than he complained and smiled more than most. We can all take a little from his playbook. At Burrel's request, there won't be any services held. Cremation arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service – Gooding Chapel. ADVERTISEMENT FOR BIDS City of Gooding, Idaho 4th Ave. Booster Pump Station Replacement Project ~ Phase I GENERAL NOTICE The City of Gooding is requesting Bids for the construction of the following Project: 4th Avenue Booster Pump Station Replacement Project – Phase I Keller Project No.: 220018 Electronic sealed Bids for the construction of the City of Gooding’s 4th Ave. Booster Pump Station Replacement Project – Phase I will be received, by the City of Gooding/ Keller Associates using QuestCDN Online Electronic Bid platform until 2:00 PM on March 23, 2022, Mountain Standard Time (MST) at which time the bids will be opened, read aloud publicly via video conference, and published on Quest CDN. A link to the video conference will be emailed to all plan holders via the email provided by the Bidder when the project documents are downloaded. The only exceptions will be those categories not requiring licensure. Bidder will not be required to meet Davis Bacon wage requirements. For all further requirements regarding bid submittal, qualifications, procedures, and contract award, refer to the Instructions to Bidders that are included in the Bidding Documents. American Iron and Steel Section 746 of Title VII of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2017 (Division A – Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2017) and subsequent statutes mandating domestic preference applies an American Iron and Steel requirement to this project. All iron and steel products used in this project must be produced in the United States.
