Battle at District Basketball

Last week, Gooding High School hosted the 1AD2 District Championship games. On Tuesday, the Richfield Tigers beat the Dietrich Blue Devils 82 to 76 in overtime, sending them up against #1 Camas Mushers for the Championship.

Wednesday evening, fans from both schools gather to cheer their teams to victory. Half time had the Mushers up by one point - 24 to 23. The second half ended in a tie - 37-37 - sending the game into overtime. The final score gave the Tigers the win 44 to 41.

With one loss against each other, tournament rule require the two teams to play an additional game to determine the District Champion.

On Saturday, fans once again traveled to Gooding High School where the Richfield Tigers owned the court. The Tigers took home the District Trophy with at 57 to 36 victory over the Mushers, advancing them to the State tournament. On Thursday, March 2nd, Richfield will face off against Clark Fork at 7:00 p.m. at Caldwell High School. The championship game will be held Saturday morning at the Ford Idaho Center.

How's Your Internet?

Link Up Idaho Wants to Know!

Is your internet slow, unreliable or spotty? Link Up Idaho wants to know about it. The Link Up Idaho initiative encourages Idahoans to submit information about their internet to provide insight into broadband availability across the state. Idaho residents can submit information about their internet by March 15.

Link Up Idaho, led by the Idaho Broadband Advisory Board (IBAB) and Idaho Department of Commerce, in coordination with the Idaho Office of Information Technology Services, aims to gather information about connectivity challenges in Idaho communities, to improve the state's map of Idaho broadband coverage.

Federal funds are available to all states, including Idaho, via the Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment (BEAD) Program. As part of this program, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has created a map representing locations with unserved and underserved broadband coverage across the United States.

By submitting information on your internet coverage, you provide the State with insight into the status of broadband coverage in your community. This ensures that the FCC map has not missed any locations so that funds can be administered appropriately.

Delegation Requests Extension For Comments on Lava Ridge

Press Release

Due to the size and scope of the proposed Lava Ridge Wind Project and the accompanying draft environmental impact statement (DEIS), as well as continued stakeholder concerns, Idaho’s Congressional Delegation sent a letter to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) requesting a 30-day extension of the comment period for the DEIS.

“In January, the BLM released the Lava Ridge DEIS for a 60-day public comment period, which runs to March 21, 2023. Because of the size and scope of the Lava Ridge project, Volume I of the DEIS exceeds 500 pages,” the delegation wrote. “The DEIS also includes multiple volumes and appendixes, along with visual models, that cover dozens of technical topics. Because of the complexity of the DEIS, the public needs additional time to review the DEIS and prepare substantive comments.”

The letter requests an extension of the public comment period by 30 days, for a total of 90 days, and additional printed copies of the DEIS for public review.

In February, U.S. Senators Mike Crapo and Jim Risch, Representative Mike Simpson, Governor Brad Little and Lieutenant Governor Scott Bedke jointly communicated deep concerns to Idaho’s head of the BLM about the proposed project.

Idaho F&G Trout Stocking

Many of Idaho’s lakes and ponds are soon going to be bolstered with Idaho Fish & Game stocking roughly 70,000 catchable-sized rainbow trout this March. Wondering if the stocking trucks are going to be backing up to your favorite fishing hole? Here is a list of Magic Valley locations:

Blair Trail Fishing Pond – 2,000 rainbow trout. First stocking event for 2023! Located on Little Canyon Creek, this remote desert water is surrounded by sagebrush solitude. It has great shoreline access as well as high-water and low-water boat ramps. Freedom Park Pond – 1,000 rainbow trout. Located in Burley, this trout pond was built with...

Cup of Tee

© Has anyone ever wondered what the epitaph (final words) of an antique tractor would be? The list would be long with numerous entries of script. Here is an example of one such in the first person.

My family has been around since the 1890’s. Personally, I was born in 1956, in the central 48 states of the United States, off the Mississippi River network. Alaska and Hawaii weren’t even states then.

When I was born my paint was bright and shiny. Before I was even two months I rode a train to a dealership (some of my siblings rode piggyback on a truck). Once at the dealerships, I was the attraction of the show grounds, and yes... the show floor.

My proud adopting family drove me to their (my) home where I was the heart of the home. I replaced many old hay burning horses. They were sent to the pasture and I got the barn. If there was an old implement that needed pulled, I was the one. As farmers confidence grew, I got to be the first to try out new implements, so often the first for miles around!

a teacher as well.

As you know, all good things must come to an end. I was not very old when the United States Government needed more and more. My bigger more horse-powered cousins were replacing ones like me. Soon we were left on the farm to do small menial tasks. Many of us (one’s my age) were left outside. We no longer had the luxury of a barn. The elements; rain, sun, hail, wind, sleet and snow started taking the toll. Many of us got sick and couldn’t work. We got water in our oil, calcium seeped out of our rims, dirt choked our airways, our batteries were frozen with acid seeping throughout our fine tin work, our seals dried and our colors became dull and unattractive. Why couldn’t we be sold to another farm?

I was proud to say I have never cussed until now. Cheap gas has made me cough. I have even taken up smoking. Other of my relatives that were my age were stripped of their dignity (parted out) or left naked against the landscape. Many were retired without use, handicapped forever. The less fortunate tractors were sent to the recyclers where they were ground like bone meal.

When did I actually die? I died when I was no longer loved as a family member. Is there heaven for antique tractors? I can only hope that some antique tractor pullers will give me new shoes (tires), good fuel, straighten and paint my tin work, and give me another chance to serve America the Land of Plenty to parade once more.

This is my tractor sized “Cup of Tee” – rust free. Need

I was treated to lunch at many a farm. Gasoline was gasoline then. We worked seven days a week from daylight to dark. Some of my relatives were cranks (hand cranks). I was lucky to be an electric start. In fact, I was given new glasses (headlights) so I could see better in the dark. I was given a hydraulic lift to make my lifting easier. Calcium was added to my shoes (tires). I could really keep myself down to business. I was like a tractor on steroids then. Many a boy learned to drive on me making me

Camas County Senior Class of 2023

Dear Friends of Camas County High School,

The 2023 Camas County High School senior parents are currently organizing a Project Graduation Party, honoring our High School Seniors and the entire Camas County High School Student Body.

Project Graduation is a nationally recognized, chaperoned, substance-free event designed to provide high school graduates with a safe alternative to celebrate their special night. This is an all-volunteer event run and organized by the senior parents. "We have a strong commitment to promoting a safe, wholesome, entertaining environment in which our students can celebrate one last time. This year we are planning to have this event in the Camas County School’s gyms with activities, games, decorations, food and prizes for all our guests."

There are 11 seniors graduating this year and the event will host 60 to 70 students. Project Graduation counts on the generous support of sponsors and fundraising activities. Your support of this worthwhile tradition is extremely important to continue this event. "The cost to put on Project Graduation is steep, but together we can do it!"

Project Graduation is only a few months away, and they need your commitment so they can do the planning and preparations. There are several ways you can help:

• Donate goods or services that would be used as prizes to be raffled that night or put into baskets for the seniors,

• Make a tax-deductible cash or check donaJon (checks must be made out to “Camas County Education Foundation” with memo for “Project Graduation 2022”), any monies left over will be donated to the Education Foundation Scholarship Fund.

• Volunteer to donate food for the evening

Additionally, submitted challenges will assist in the development of the State's broadband map which will be utilized by IBAB when allocating funding.

"The Idaho Broadband Advisory Board is excited to provide Idaho residents across the state with the support and tools needed to challenge the FCC broadband location and availability map as well as conduct individual internet speed tests," Idaho Broadband Advisory Board Chair, Representative John Vander Woude said. "This data will be crucial in assisting the board with the allocation of broadband dollars."

Following the challenge deadline, the Link Up Idaho initiative will continue to gather information and provide ongoing community outreach on internet connectivity in the state.

"This project is a prime example of teams coming together with the same goal, to Link Up Idahoans," Idaho Broadband Program Manager, Ramón Hobdey-Sánchez said. "The information submitted by Idahoans will be essential as Idaho moves forward with expanding broadband access across the state."

Mary Nadine Hume

Her strength of character born into her from the farm in Kansas, where during a snowstorm, Mary Nadine Higgins came into the world, the 2nd of 4 children to parents Mr. and Mrs. Roy Higgins on March 11, 1926.

Around the age of twelve, she and her family would rise up from what would become the dustbowl in Kansas after the great depression to venture north, finding their new home and way of life in Gooding, Idaho. They followed family to Idaho, and eventually most of them would unite there.

The early days of her life would help to establish a solid foundation in her of a great spirit, positive attitude and a real zest for life!

In Gooding she would meet who would become the love of her life, Bob Hume. They had been in high school together, met at a dance and began dating when World War II called Bob to service. She studied to become a beautician and worked with a friend in her salon and loved helping others see their potential. Bob served gallantly, earning the Air Medal flying combat missions as a ball turret gunner on a B-17. As soon as he returned, he proposed they marry, and they began their wonderful life together.

From Gooding to Pocatello, Blackfoot and finally to Island Park, Idaho where they lived out their dream together. Along the way, 4 children would bless them with their own family: Jimmy, Mary, Tim and Julie. Nadine was a caring, nurturing rock-solid mother for her children and devoted her life to husband Bob. She was his anchor, as he was her hero. She so loved him! They had honeymooned in Sun Valley, Idaho where they would enjoy many return trips over the years. Julie called them the “Sun Valley Kids” for their youthful exuberance. They loved camping trips, Yellowstone Park, visiting her sister Wanda and her husband Bob, trips to Ketchum to be with Brother-in-law Jim and his wife Ladene, enjoying Bob’s sister Virginia and her husband John McMurray and Nadine’s sister Deloris and husband Dale Bumgarner, and Merle Higgins family, and many reunions at Redfish Lake and other fun places.

Her real passion was growing in her garden the wonderful food she so enjoyed sharing with everyone, or gathering wild foods like asparagus. She

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN by the Gooding County Planning and Zoning Commission that the following Public Hearings will be held March 21, 2023, starting at 5:30 p.m.

SPECIAL USE PERMIT application submitted by: Efrain Ortega, P.O. Box 786, Jerome, ID, 83338. A request to develop a subdivision within an Agriculture zone. It is located at 2324 E 3300 S, Wendell, ID. It is within Section 18, Township 8, Range 18.

canned, preserved and put up all sorts of vegetables, homemade jam and jelly. She baked beautiful home-made bread, even entering and winning ribbons at the local fair. She would collect wildflowers to press, dry and make sweet cards for her friends and. family. She touched so many people, and she had a way of making you feel special. She was the consummate host. Her and Bob were truly a bright light to see and be lifted by their presence. Her enthusiasm made it all look so easy - and it wasn’t - she just had a great outlook and will to live life to the fullest. She moved graciously, bright eyes, her dynamic smile, floating on her gorgeous legs, that Bob so loved to admire. Bob was a lifetime fly fisherman and Nadine loved to sit nearby and just watch Bob enjoy one of his real passions. Bob was a gifted, creative soul as well, his photography recorded and chronicled their life of style and adventure together. Generous and warm, they were very happy and giving, loved to entertain and spend time with the many friends along the way. They so cherished the wonderful people they had come to know, especially their connections made in Island Park.

Nadine and Bob would come to Bozeman, Montana to be near their daughter Julie and spend their final years in her devoted care. They spent as much time as possible taking trips back to Island Park to be close to son Tim of Blackfoot, Idaho and stay close to their friends that all meant so much to them.

Saddened, we are to announce her passing, we can all be comforted in knowing she left us with her beautiful mind sound, extraordinary courage unwavered and her poise intact at her home in Bozeman in the loving care of her daughter Julie and her partner Dennis Cwidak.

Just a few weeks shy of her 97th Birthday, and with another Valentine’s Day looming, she chose to reunite with her life-love Bob, daughter Mary and son Jimmy, who preceded her in passing. She had made her last trip to Island Park this past Thanksgiving, for one more visit to her favorite place, soaking in the essence of her and Bob’s life there, so now they are together, forever. To everyone who loved her, helped care for her and was touched by her love – thank you from our hearts.

A celebration of life was held on Thursday, February 9, 2023 at 11:30 am at Demaray Funeral Service - Gooding Chapel. Burial followed at the Elmwood Cemetery in Gooding.
