Dietrich Girls McGinnis Takes Gold Again Take State The 50 game winning streak for the Blue Devil Ladies basketball team ended two weeks ago with a 40 to 41, edge-ofyour- seat loss to the Carey Panthers in the District Tournament. Even so, they didn’t let that defeat detour them from continuing on to win their third straight basketball Championship at the State Tournament with three decisive wins over Kootenai, Mackay, and Kendrick. Last Wednesday, the Dietrich Boys took first in the District Tournament with a solid win over Carey (58 to 49). They will be playing in the 4th game (8 p.m.) of the State Tournament this Thursday at Caldwell High School against Kendrick. The 1AD2 Championship game will be on Saturday, March 2, at the Idaho Center at 9:30 a.m. In 1AD1 Basketball, the Shoshone Boys took second at the District Tournament, losing to Grace by only three points (44 to 41). They will play their first game of the State Basketball Tournament this Thursday at 8 p.m. against Kamiah at Vallivue High School in Caldwell. The Championship game for this division will be played at the Idaho Center on Saturday, March 2, at 11:30 a.m.
Cole McGinnis took gold for a second year in a row at the Idaho State Wrestling Championships held this last weekend at ISU in Pocatello. Competing in the 3A 285 bracket, McGinnis took the championship in four straight matches, all of which were pins. He was not alone, however, in bring home glory for the Gooding Senator’s Wresting team. Torin Brunson, competing in the 3A 152 bracket, took a second place with two pins and a 2-1 decision. His only loss was in the championship match against Nic Arnold from Sugar/Salem which ended in a 4-2 decision.

Sam Dalton took 4th in the 3A 182 bracket and Landunn Koyle finished 6th in the 3A 195 bracket. Other Gooding wrestlers who competed at the state championships include, Tristan Kaneaster, Jeff Hernandez, Santos Gutierrez, Salvador Lopez, Spencer Ferguson, Junior Gutierrez, Kaden Barrus, and Eric Finley.

Shoshone UMC hosts a meal on Tuesday evenings, Gooding UMC on Wednesday evenings, and Richfield UMC on Thursday evenings. Always at 6:30pm for all three. Camas Library - Bits & Bytes The Camas County Public Library has many new books for patrons to check out. Two especially stand out because they are something a different and could in a sense be called charming and endearing. These books are a series written by Patrick Taylor (M. D.) who was born and raised in Bangor County Down in Northern Ireland. Although they are works of fiction, his books are based on journals he kept of his early days in rural Ireland. Our library has the first two books: An Irish Country Doctor followed by An Irish Country Village. The town is Ballybucklebo and two of the main characters are Barry Laverty, M.M. an assistant to Dr. Fingal Flahertie O’Reilly. They treat the many eccentric and colorful characters of the town and surrounding area. These books are great reads that keep you turning pages written in a style akin to James Herriot.

Well Depth Study The Camas Soil Conservation District (SCD) is considering a domestic well depth study for the 2013 summer season. The study would begin in May and end in October. Don’t Forget The Supplemental Levy Election On March 12th. The 2013-2014 school year will present an even greater challenge to maintain our current commitment to educate our most precious asset, and in many ways the future, the children of Camas County. The slow economic recovery and the destabilization of State of Idaho revenue have created great challenges for the Joint Finance and Appropriation Committee and their ability to adequately fund Idaho’s public education system. At this time the Idaho FY 2014 Public School Appropriation has not been set, but early indicators are showing that the Public School Appropriation will still be far below the appropriation as far back as 2009. Let me assure you that our elected School Board members have been involved in the planning and management of the district. The Board of Trustees is very aware that Camas County School District is a district with limited financial resources and a concentrated effort is being made to make each and every tax dollar stretch as far as possible. Like many of you, we are committed to do more with less. That is why this year’s supplemental levy is asking for no more than you have approved in the past. That’s right, even though we are receiving far less state support than we have received in previous years, this supplemental levy will be for the same amount that you approved two years ago. Approval of the supplemental levy will not increase your taxes over this year’s levy rate. Once again, rest assured that the Camas County School District will do everything in our power to not undermine our educational programs, including extra-curricular activities. What is this librarian reading these days? New: Behind Beautiful Forever – Katherine Boo I have written that I love a story that pulls me in and “Behind Beautiful Forever – Life Death and Hope in the Mumbai Undercity” did that alright. It really, REALLY pulled me in, it pulled me in and it pulled me down and I wanted out! I have never been so disgusted by a culture, by a society, by people without a single trait of humanity. Page after page, one horrible event after another, I kept flipping back to the bio to see if my eyes were deceiving me – this was a documentary. These events and people were not the product of some deeply disturbed writer, but actual events, the characters even used their real names. No, no! This is child abuse worse than Slum Dog Millionaire, this is matricide, homicide, animal abuse, everything horrible that could happen did happen. Because the title assured me it was Life, Death and Hope, I assumed that the final chapter would redeem these completely damaged people, and that Hope would continued on page 8..... surface. Forget it.

Gale Madsen Roberts
Bonnie Arkoosh ~ 1924-2013
Gale Madsen Roberts, 88, passed away at his home on February 14, 2013, after a brave battle with cancer. He was born 2 September 1924 in Burley Idaho. He was the 9th child of William and Rosetta Roberts. He had 3 brothers and 6 sisters. He grew up near the Snake River in Burley and had a wonderful childhood there – fishing, boating and playing on the river. He attended school in Burley; On March 27, 1943 he married his sweetheart Lois Molyneux In July 1943 he joined the Navy and was sent to Perdue University for electrical training. Their first child, Gale C Lynn Roberts was born February 13, 1944 at Twin Falls, Idaho, Gale didn’t see him for quite a while. Gale served on the USS General Hershey. In June 1946 Gale continued his electrical training in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Here their second child, Richard Guy Roberts, was born November 1, 1946. Gale and Lois moved back to Twin Falls in 1948 and Gale worked for Detweiler Bros. until 1954. They moved to a ranch at Picabo, Idaho then in 1960 moved to Carey, Idaho. In 1965 they started Roberts Electric and it continued to grow and eventually their two sons joined them in the business. Gale Sr. retired in 1992. He served in the volunteer fire district in Carey and the Blaine County planning and zoning board for 8 years. Gale was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in many positions. He and Lois were sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple on March 27, 1979. They served two missions for the church. They moved to Shoshone in 1993. He is survived by his wife, Lois Molyneux Roberts, sons Gale C (Kathleen), Richard (Nancy), 13 grandchildren: Mellonee (Daren) Wilding, Minon (Jeremiah) Yates, Mitchell (Jody) Roberts, Donivon (Tracy) Roberts, Lacy Arnold, Caleb (Heather) Roberts, Tara (Brad) McCoy, Dacia (Joel) Yoder, Abbigale (Robert) Vincent, Torrey (Lana) Roberts, Tabrina Roberts, Breea (Bryan) Heiner, Gage Roberts along with thirty-seven (37) Great Grandchildren. Services were held on February 19, 2013, at the Shoshone LDS Church. Interment with Military Honors will followed at the Shoshone Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Farnsworth Mortuary of Jerome.
Bonnie Edith Ledbetter Arkoosh, born March 18, 1924, to Charles Thomas Ledbetter and Jewel Rose Ledbetter, in Glenns Ferry, Idaho, died February 16, 2013, in Boise, Idaho, by surrender to her Redeemer. As a child growing up in Hammett, Bonnie rode the desert, hunted and fished with her dad; cooked and sewed with her mother; played state championship high school tennis with her friends; and graduated Salutatorian from Glenns Ferry High School. Bonnie took her Registered Nursing certification at St. Alphonsis in Boise during World War II, rooming with Yvonne Wagner, nee Arkoosh, who introduced Bonnie to George Arkoosh, Yvonne's brother who ranched with his family in Gooding, Idaho. On December 14, 1946, Bonnie and George eloped to be married at St. John's Cathedral in Boise, Idaho. They lived together in Gooding, raising nine children and untold sheep and cattle, until George's death on October 6, 1987. Mom heartened illiterate immigrant boys who came to herd sheep, vagabonds who stopped at her ranch door, ranchers, farmers and stockmen, neighbors, politicians, scholars, and clergy all with the same matchless graceful charm and deep individual respect. No one left her table or her home without an enduring impression of her hospitality and appreciation for her humane conversation. With much love and patience, she enticed the moral compass of her children to resonate her values and objective sense of justice, her love of learning and her responsibility to community. We each of her children are grateful to Mom for offering us this happy direction for our lives. Bonnie is survived by her children, Joseph Thomas Arkoosh, Michael Alexander Arkoosh (Kristine), John Cromwell Arkoosh (Deborah), Charles Thomas Arkoosh (Linda), James Elias Arkoosh (Sheri), George Francis Arkoosh II (Lizabeth), Ann Elizabeth Brown (Phil), Mary Rose Arkoosh (Rick) Bonnie Theresa Carns (Tom), twenty-two (22) grandchildren and four (4) great grandchildren. Services were held on Friday, February 22, at St. Marks in Boise, Idaho, and on February 23 at St. Elizabeth's in Gooding. In keeping with the focus of Mom's love and compassion for her fellows, please make a donation to any charity of your preference in memory of her.
S E RV I C E N O T I C E S Stephen “Steve” Miller, 74, a resident of Wendell, passed away on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at the North Canyon Medical Center in Gooding. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 2:00 pm at the Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall at 101 North Bliss Street in Wendell where the services will conclude. Cremation arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service – Wendell Chapel.

Marjorie Louella Bauscher Marjorie Louella Bauscher, 88, a resident of Boise, formerly of Fairfield, passed away Friday, February 22, 2013 at Park Center Assisted Living in Boise. Having lived a full and loving life, Marjorie has gone to be with the Lord. She was born July 26, 1924 in Buhl, Idaho to Libbie (Cibulka) and Lawrence Rubinek. She graduated from Buhl High School and then graduated from Albion Normal College where she began her lifelong dedication to teaching. She taught school in Gooding, Buhl, Eden and many years at Camas County Elementary in Fairfield. Always looking to improve her teaching skills, she spent several summers at BSU and earned her Bachelor’s of Art in Elementary Education. Marjorie married Allen Bauscher June 24, 1948. She and Allen made their home in Fairfield where they ran a successful farming and ranching operation. Marj was a major contributor to the success of the operation, feeding ranch hands at roundups, delivering snacks to the fields during harvest, and delaying the purchase of a desired sofa so they could buy a new bull and occasionally waking to find a new born calf in the kitchen that had been born on a subzero Fairfield night. To say that Marj kept busy is an understatement, she had unstoppable energy and drive. Not only did she help run the ranch and teach school, but she was very involved in the community. She was active in the Fairfield Community Church, served on the Camas County planning and zoning commission, the Camas Library Board, the American Cancer Society, numerous women’s cattle associations and wrote the “Camas Chatter” for the Courier Newspaper. She also found time to raise three children, was the consummate hostess, a 4-H leader and provided support and creative entertainment for her grandchildren. She was dedicated to reading her Bible and made time for daily devotions. She enjoyed making quilts for her grandchildren and often gave them as gifts to newborns. As a lifelong learner, Marj was determined to learn the computer (much to Al’s dismay) and the art of e-mail (sometimes to the amusement of her grandchildren). Always organized, Marjorie wrote her own obituary. Drafts of which date back many years and included numerous footnotes and annotations as life changed along the way. Always humble and drawn to the practical, her drafts were technically accurate but self effacing. We have taken the liberty of expanding on her drafts. Marjorie was preceded in death by her son Larry and her husband Allen. She is survived by her son Randy (Mary) Bauscher and daughter Paula (Drew) Forney. Grandchildren Miranda (Jeff) Gibson, Brenda Fries, Bill Bauscher, Joe (Kari) Forney, Betsy
(Eli) Schmoeger, Suzy Forney, Christie Bauscher, Mike Bauscher and Anthony Barringa. Great grandchildren Kayla and Nic Gibson; Madyson, Haylee, Darbie and Paul Fries; Jaxson Bauscher; Jack and Isolabella Forney and Wade Schmoeger. She also leaves behind, her sister, Audrey Randall (Mervin) Buhl and several nieces and nephews and special friend Debbie Despot. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 8, 2013, at Demaray Funeral Service in Gooding. No public visitation will be held. She will be laid to rest at Elwood Cemetery, in Gooding, next to her beloved husband, Allen. Memorial Contributions in Marjorie’s name may be made to the Camas County Library, P.O. Box 292, Fairfield, Idaho 83327.
Glen E. Tolle Glen E. Tolle, 86, of Gooding and formerly of Burley, passed away Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at his son’s home in Chubbuck. He was born Oct. 24, 1926, the son of Lloyd and Ola Tolle. Glen was raised in California with one brother, Mack; and three sisters, Ellen, Daisy and Leola. Glenn served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1948. He moved to Utah to work as a ranch hand and then moved to Burley. Glen ran a dairy business, farmed and did custom hay hauling. Glen was the father of eight children, Kirk (Carla) Tolle, Kent (Debra) Tolle, Cindy (Marlin) Payne, Lesia (Kim) Harris, Brenda (Bruce) Draper, Hollie (Lynn) Manning, Brent Tolle and Mart (Melanie) Tolle. Glen leaves behind 34 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. There will be a private family service in Boise with interment at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery.

Cup of Tee
Last week I told you that I had a couple of books to give away for the tractor and equipment class I was teaching as part of the “Living on the Land” class I am a part of . To give better visuals, I figured I would take some tractors to class. My old Farmall H is a good tractor to show for operations of the 1950’s and 1960’s. It is a prime example of the working system of the time whereas the farm families utilized their tractors even with horse drawn equipment. The old “H” had two tires low on air, a dead battery and bad gasoline (gas was past its’ two month life expectancy!) So to take it to class, I basically had to hand winch the tractor onto my trailer. I spent about an hour winching the tractor on with a short come-along. With flat tires, it was quite a drag to get the tractor in loaded position. Even more so, was the fact that Tee was out of air, hand cranking the tractor. Within a few moments of sitting, Tee recharged with air. If I had some air in my tractor tires, then I probably wouldn’t have used all of my own. I took the tractor to class and as I passed a new tire store facility. I thought I might air up the “H” so I could unload it easier. The store was called Discount Tire. It wasn’t my usual Les Schwab, but air is air. I pulled the pickup and trailer right up in front of the big shop doors. I got out of my pickup and a gentleman, apparently the one in charge, met me outside. I told him, “I would like to rotate the air in the tractor tires. “ He looked at me like I was crazy. Maybe he didn’t understand my humor. So then I said, “I need to put a little air in these tractor tires! I have a couple that are low.” The response from the manager type person was “Sorry, but we don’t have anyone certified to put air in tractor tires.” For a second, I was lost. I replied with query, “You are a tire store and you don’t have anyone that is qualified to put air in my tractor tires? That is the craziest thing I have ever heard of. Bring me the hose and I’ll do it myself” His immediate reply was, “We are not insured to do that either.” By this time, I really felt I wasn’t welcome there and said,” I can’t believe what I’m hearing. I guess I will go down the road where I can get some air.” I probably won’t be buying any tires from that group of discount tire sellers and I am still puzzled that in an agriculture community that tractors’ can’t get air. I guess they must have some automated tire system where they don’t actually humanly do the services. Last week I wrote to you about bubble wrap and letting the air out of things. I didn’t know I would be writing about putting air back into my story. This is my inflated “Cup of Tee.”

...the Borrowed Book continued Katherine Boo’s documentary is written in novel form and it reads like a novel from Hell itself. It does what a novel is supposed to do – it pulls you in and holds you captive. I could not put it down. Fortunately, it’s only a few hundred pages so that the moment I closed the back cover and left the slum of Mumbai, I took a long hot cleansing bath and reveled in my good luck to live in Gooding Idaho. -----------------------------Classic: The Big Rock Candy Mountain – Wallace Stegner Mr. Stegner has never written a book that didn’t totally involve me emotionally, he’s a writer who can make me forget to vacuum and make me lie in a bubble-bath gone cold while I turn page after page. That’s how good he is. The Big Rock Candy Mountain is his own story of and it is yet another tale of rotten parenting which I am coming to understand either makes the kid brilliant or criminal – or both. It made Wallace brilliant. He made me hate his father from the get-go, he made me want to slap his mother and yell “wake-up dumbbell”. His descriptions of farming and ranching were like a conservationist’s tell-all but this is no farm family – from poverty shacks on the Canadian plains to city slums in Los Angeles, the mystery is why these people stayed together as a family. The Big Rock Candy Mountain is like a big lasagna, layer after layer of texture, flavor and meat – and totally worth the effort.

Local Physician Assistant Receives New Specialty Credential James Blacksher, PA-C, of Gooding Idaho, was recently awarded a Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Emergency Medicine from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). He earned that distinction by meeting licensure, education and experience requirements and then passing an exam. James Blacksher, PA-C, who is employed through North Canyon Medical Center, is one of only 3 PAs in Idaho, Utah & Montana to earn a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Emergency Medicine.
