The building at the corner of Highway 26 and South Main Street in Richfield has been empty for several years, but a new business is filling the void. Until recently, the Romero family had been running a Mexican restaurant in downtown Twin Falls - El Paraiso. For various reason they had to move out of that building, and for several months they have been looking for a new location. They found it in Richfield. The Family Mart serves burritos, tacos, enchiladas, and other Mexican favorites as well as hamburgers, hot dogs and corndogs. The new business is also a convenience store with snacks, beverages, and a small selection of fresh fruit. Most days you’ll find Juan Romero behind the counter, and in the afternoon and evenings his mom and dad take over while Juan heads to a second job. February 26, 2020 Vol 44 Num 9 Hearings Scheduled For 129,000-Pound Truck Route
In response to a permit request from Idaho Milk Transport, the Idaho Transportation Department is evaluating the feasibility of allowing loads of up to 129,000 lbs. on sections of US-93, Idaho Highway 46, and Idaho Highway 79. Public hearings will be held March 4 and March 5 in Wendell and Twin Falls to provide citizens an opportunity to review displays of the existing and proposed 129k routes. Hearings will be held in open-house format with staff from ITD on hand to answer questions regarding the applications or 129k process. These shipments are reducible, meaning cargo or goods can be removed to make a shipment lighter.

Medicare Workshops
A free Medicare workshop for individuals turning 65 and those approaching Medicare eligibility will be held in Twin Falls on Monday, March 23rd, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Twin Falls Public Library at 201 Fourth Avenue East, and in Buhl on Tuesday, March 24th, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the Buhl Public Library, 215 Broadway Ave. N. Everyone, including caregivers, interested in learning how Medicare works is encouraged to attend. Medicare workshops are designed to introduce the various parts of Medicare and the benefits associated with the program. Sessions cover enrollment timeframes for Medigap, Medicare Advantage, prescription drug plans, and how the different parts of Medicare work together. Staff with the state’s Senior Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA) program, a unit of the Idaho Department of Insurance, conduct the workshops. Our Gooding Community
by Brynna Hults (Gooding 4th Grade student) There are many neat places to visit in Gooding. We have many businesses, great activities, and many attractions as well. Some of these are the public library, school, firehouse, country club for golfing, parks, pool, and a small airport. Gooding also has a very good hospital and Deaf and Blind School. One of my favorite attractions is the library. It has many fun games and activities after school. During the summer, you can do summer reading. They have fun STEM and Family Read Nights. If you went February 8, 2020 you probably got to experience their Death by Dessert fundraiser event. So yummy! They have tons of books to check out, take home, and even a new virtual reality headset! I love it there! The school also is a great attraction! It has many great teachers and excellent staff. Once a month, there is something called a PTA meeting. It stands for Parent Teacher Association. It also gives ideas for fundraisers. The fundraisers are so we get money for the wonderful field trips, playground equipment, and Breakfast with Santa event. The best part is they sell smencils, which are smelly pencils. The firehouse is a great place too. The fire department is made up of amazing volunteers that put out fires. It has a great boss, and a lot of good employees that save lives. They have a dog, which is a cute dog. They check the buildings that are on fire in case someone is still inside. They teach kids at the school and library about fire safety. They also do fundraising to get better equipment to keep everyone safe. Other fun things to do are swimming in the swimming pool, playing at the park, or going golfing at the golf course. Those are some of my favorite attractions here in Gooding, Idaho! If you are looking for something to do, check out one of these places.
Idaho F&G Extends Wolf Hunting & Trapping

During a conference call on February 20th, the Idaho Fish & Game Commission adopted nine proposed modifications to wolf hunting and trapping for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons, extending wolf hunting opportunity, opening more areas to wolf trapping and extending trapping seasons, all which take effect immediately. Specific changes can be found online in the 2019-20 Idaho Big Game Seasons and Rules. Fish and Game biologists recently released a new statewide wolf population estimate based on remote camera surveys and other monitoring efforts. The estimate indicates Idaho’s wolf population remains robust through fluctuations of births and mortality over the year with an estimated peak of 1,541 wolves during summer 2019 after the annual birth cycle and about 1,000 wolves at the end of the year. continued on page 4.....

Last Wednesday, February 19th, was the anniversary of Executive Order 9066, which led to the removal of people with Japanese ancestry from the United States’ West Coast. During World War II, Hunt, Idaho became the site of the Minidoka War Relocation Center, now a National Historic Site. On Saturday, the Minidoka National Historical Site celebrated the opening of its new visitor center. The ribbon cutting included Governor Brad Little who urged people to “Come here and support this facility, to learn about it, so that we don’t forget.” Earlier this month, Washington State University Press anounced the release of a new book about the Minidoka center - An Eye for Injustice: Robert C. Sims and Minidoka. Sims, who died in 2015, was considered by many to be the foremost scholar on Minidoka, yet, his academic work offered an readable and passionate perspective. An Eye for Injustice includes selections from Sims’ work on topics such as Idaho governor Chase Clark’s role, life in camp, the impact Japanese labor had on Idaho agriculture, effects of loyalty questionnaires, and more. Additional contributors discuss Sims’ passion for social justice, how Minidoka became his platform, and the Robert C. Sims Collection at Boise State University. Last week I told you I had purchased a dump truck from Council, Idaho. I had shoveled it out of the snow and people were asking me if I though spring was near. My reply was I didn’t think so, or at least where I was it wasn’t spring. Then I managed to awaken some wasps in the truck. That still wasn’t an indication of spring, but merely the fact that I got the heater to create enough heat to make the wasps believe it was spring. A reader of the Courier News from Council got a hold of me and told me they knew the truck I purchased very well. I was told the truck was located on Hornet Creek there in Council. That sort of explains why the wasps were so disoriented when I tried out the truck earlier, and why I had so many wasps wintering out. I thought the location of the truck purchase was sort of unique to the problems I was having - WASPS! Early miner in Central Idaho would have probably enjoyed the sight of wasps this time of year. It would have meant that the weather would have been in the late 40s or early 50 degrees. Instead the temperature would be near 10 to 20 below zero. The new year’s celebration was not to celebrate a new year, but to state whether someone had done their assessment work from the previous year. A claim could be up for grabs and refiling.

Roads and communications were bare to none. Most often roads were covered with three plus feet of snow. If they were open, they were waist deep in mud. Railroads were nonexistent in early mining days. I you had a chance to get hauled to a mining district, the fares were very expensive. Freighter, stage coach operators, and anyone hauling products were few and the rates almost unbearable. The price averaged 4 cents a pound and trips lasted from 3 days to 2 weeks. Most of the housing facilities were 2 room dirt log cabins or building similar to tents with only canvas roofs. In the 1880s, hay was $45 a ton and board ran $7 to $8 per week. Potatoes were $8 a hundred weight. There was no beef to be had. Beans and bacon were slim commodities with flour at $7 a hundred weight. The worst thing the miners had to time of year was speculation. Newspapers from non-region locations would try to help raise capital to create the mines. People came from wherever with what little they had hoping to get what they needed later. There were no towns, basically just people and no services. It took a while for stores, roads and prosperous mine veins. Springtime in mining areas were April, May, and even June. This is my “Cup of Tee” with spring not there either.

The Commission has incrementally and consistently increased wolf hunting and trapping seasons for more than a decade in response to livestock depredations and impacts to other big game species. But the 2019 estimate showed the wolf population remains well above the federal recovery criteria of 150 wolves and 15 breeding pairs statewide. Wolf predation on livestock and other domestic animals remains chronic in certain areas and would increase if the wolf population expands into southern Idaho. Wolf predation also continues to have a negative effect on elk populations in some backcountry areas. During the 14-day public comment period, Fish and Game received comments from 27,076 people about the hunting and trapping proposals, of which 5,675 were from Idaho residents. The percentage of support/opposition was fairly consistent throughout the nine individual proposals. Among Idaho residents who commented, about 55 percent supported each of the proposals, and about 45 percent opposed. When all 27,076 comments were tallied, between 15 and 16 percent (depending on the proposal) supported them, and 84 to 85 percent opposed, with the majority of responses coming from outside of Idaho and many coming from outside of the U.S.

Wilburn “Bud” Henry Andrew, 96, a resident of Shoshone passed away on Sunday, February 16, 2020 in Lindon, Utah. Bud was born on November 28, 1923 in Rupert, Idaho, the second of three sons born to William Marian Andrew and Anna Mae Long Andrew. His father died in 1926 and his widowed mother married George H. Kenaston in 1929. Three more children were added to the blended family. Bud graduated from Shoshone High School in 1942, was drafted in 1943, and married Vivian Lorraine Claycomb of Jerome, Idaho in 1944. To this union was born their children - William Henry, Andrew and Pamela Jean Andrew. This marriage was later dissolved. Bud was drafted January 21, 1943 and served in the Army Air Corps and was assigned to the 98th Squadron Troop Carrier Command. On June 14, 1944, he arrived in England, missing the D-Day invasion at Normandy by 8 days. In the 14 months of overseas duty, he flew a countless number of re-supply or ferrying wounded missions, but only a total of 13 combat missions where they were actually fired on by the Germans. After the war, Bud and his family returned to Shoshone, where he worked for several years before moving his family to California. Over the following 35 years, he worked at jobs in California and Idaho, retiring in 1988. He returned to live in Shoshone in 1997. He enjoyed fishing, oil painting, writing poetry, gardening, cooking, working on World War II airplane models, and family history. He is survived by: his son - Bill (Brenna) Andrew of Gooding, Idaho; his daughter - Pam (Dan) Stowe of Provo, Utah; seven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren; his brothers – George W. “Casey” Kenaston, and Clair Kenaston; and his sister - Judy Warren. He was preceded in death by his brothers – Bill and Ralph; and his parents. Graveside services were held on Friday, February 21, 2020, at the Shoshone Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you donate to the V.F.W. or American Legion, or the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association. Funeral services are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service – Shoshone Chapel. Doris Jean Lesher
Doris “Doey” Jean Lesher, 77, of Gooding died, February 16, 2020 at Bennett Hills Care Center. Doey was born December 17, 1942 in Albany, New York the daughter of Leonard and Lucille Lesher. She was raised in Marsing, Idaho and attended Vallievue High School. Doey went on to start a day care in 1965 in Caldwell, Idaho then later moving to Shoshone, Idaho, were she took care of a multitude of children and was a second mom to many. Doey’s heart and arms were always open to those in need. She is survived by her niece and nephews that adopted her as their second mother - Carlene Gaston (Jay Ha), Karl Gaston (Shonia Gaston) and Kirtus Gaston (Stephanie Gaston). Grandchildren - Kalli Gaston (Eric Gaston), Jessica Gaston, and Seyara Gaston. Great grandchildren - Zander Gaston, Brooklyn Wisdom, Heidi Wisdom, Eli Gaston and Daxten Corder. She is preceded in death by her father - Leonard Lesher, mother - Lucille Lesher, and sister -Deanna Gaston. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on February 25, 2020, at Demaray Funeral Service – Gooding Chapel. Burial will follow at the Elmwood Cemetery in Gooding.
