News New Owners for Fairfield’s Pizza Pub
This Friday, February 26th, Y’all come on in to Jim’s Dandy’s Pizza in Fairfield for a Farewell / Welcome celebration. For the last six years Cal and Elaine Web have been running the Pizza Pub, but now it is time for them to slow down a bit. Come in and say farewell to one of Fairfield’s favorite couples, and give a big howdy to the new owners - Ken & Bonnie Cox. About two years ago Ken Cox was browsing on FaceBook when he came across a post by an old friend from the San Juan Islands. Twenty-one years earlier, he and Bonnie had been close friends and they took the opportunity to become reacquainted. A year ago, Bonnie closed down a dog
grooming business she had been running for fourteen years in Utah and moved to Fairfield. On July 16th of last summer, the two of them tied the knot. Ken was looking to buy a Peterbilt Truck, but after the deal fell through a different sort of deal caught his eye. Once again they were on FaceBook when

For a second year in a row, the Richfield Tiger Ladies met the Dietrich Lady Devils for the State 1AD2 Basketball, and again the Tigers came home with the Trophy with 51 to 40 victory. 37) and Kimberly (61-47) in a second match up. On Tuesday night they played Buhl, and if they were victorous, they will play Buhl one more time for the right to go to State. Last Wednesday, Wendell defeated Declo 57 to 44 and on Monday they handed Declo another lose of 57 to 48. These wins gave Wen-
dell the District Championship, but to play at State they will have to defeat the District III 3rd place team this Saturday in Mountain Home (3:00 pm). Tonight Dietrich and Richfield will face off for the Northside Championship at 7:30 p.m. The loser of that game will play again on Thursday for second place.

Fighting Drug Abuse
Over the last 15 years there has been 300 percent increase in the sale of powerful painkillers such as Vicodin and OxyContin. These drugs help those with cronic pain, but the unused portions of those prescriptions often fall into the hands of young people who are under the mistaken opinion that these drugs are safe. The truth... more people die from legally prescribed drugs than from heroin and cocaine combined. To help curtail this epidemic, the Gooding County Sheriff’s Office is using a grant from the Idaho Meth Project to provide two prescription drug drop off bins. Anybody that has left over prescription meds that they need to get rid of, now have a place to go with them. One bin is located just inside the back door of the courthouse. It is accessable 24 hrs a day. The other bin is located at Wendell City Hall - accessable 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. “We encourage the public to use these bins instead continued on page 2.....

Caves of the Snake River Plain
February 27th at the Camas Public Library
On the eastern Snake River Plain, near Big Southern Butte, are a number of unique lava tube caves. Eleven of the caves contain evidence of prehistoric human use including hunting, food processing and storage, lithic tool manufacture, and hide preparation. Several caves contain significant rock art including images of bison and shield bearing warriors. Some caves also contain year round ice and may have provided water in the high desert. At 7:00 p.m. this Saturday, February 27th, join Julie Rodman as she shares the results of various excavations and discusses the surrounding unexcavated caves.

Javier Zorrozua
Javier Zorrozua, 79, a resident of Hagerman, passed away Thursday, February 11, 2016 at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Javier was born in Errigoitia (Rigoitia), Bizkaia, in the Basque Country of Northern Spain. Like many Basques of his generation he went to sea on ships all over the world. In 1961 his life changed dramatically. Javier arrived in Hagerman, Idaho to work as a sheepherder for Jones and Sandy Livestock Company. He spent the summers at Cape Horn, near Stanley, returning to Hagerman during the lambing season. In 1981 Jay continued working for Bill Jones, on his ranch in Hagerman. Jay was the ultimate agricultural worker. He was a dedicated and valued employee, always on the ranch and always busy with a variety of challenges, with which he became an expert at solving those challenges. Through much study and effort, Jay earned his US citizenship in 1998. He was a member of the Gooding Basque Association. He is survived by three sisters and numerous nieces and nephew, all in Spain. Jay was preceded in death by one sister, a brother and parents. As Jay had no family in the USA, many friends not only called him a friend, but considered him part of their family. Jay will be missed by all who knew him. Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 7 pm, on Friday, February 26, 2016 at Demaray Funeral Service – Gooding Chapel, 737 Main St. in Gooding. A memorial service will be held at 11 am, on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the Gooding Basque Center, 285 Euskadi Ln. in Gooding. Our beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend Patricia Phillips, 51, of Wendell, Idaho, passed away on February 13, 2016, after a courageous battle with cancer. A memorial service was held at Demaray’s Wendell Chapel on Sunday, February 21, 2016, followed by a dinner at the American Legion Hall. Patty was born in Eugene, Oregon on November 12, 1964. She attended Gooding High School and continued on to be an employee of the Gooding School District. Patty was married to Mike Phillips on December 19, 1991. They spent 31 loving years together, and had three children. Patty is survived by her husband Mike; daughters Sarah (Eddie) Campos and Valerie (Kevin) Phillips; son Michael Phillips Jr; grandchildren Ashlee Cabral, Abbeygale Campos, and Braxtyn Campos; and sister Cindy (Jerry) Foster; along with many other family and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents and foster parents, Gilbert Valentine, Juanita and Russ Cramer, and Bob and Jean Fisk. Darlene Stevenson
Darlene Stevenson, 90, of Wendell, passed away Monday February 22, 2016, at her home. She was born October 7, 1925, in Montpelier, Idaho, the daughter of Rudolph William Sutter and Zella Bird Meeks Sutter. She spent her youth and school years in Montpelier where she loved attending local dances and swimming in Bear Lake. On August 25, 1943, she married Lynn Stevenson in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. To this union was born four sons. Darlene and Lynn started out in the Weston area then moved to the Magic Valley, eventually settling in Wendell. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in a variety of callings including, Primary and Relief Society presidencies and as a Visiting Teacher. Darlene is survived by her sons, Michael Lynn (Barbara) of Willows, CA, Keith William of Wendell, and Allen Abel (Merrilee) also of Wendell; her grandchildren, Joanna (Josh), James (Tiffany), Scott (Richelle), Breezi and Skylar; her great-grandchildren, Aliyah, Hunter and Charlotte. She is preceded in death by her husband, Lynn, their son, Ronald Gary and her brother, Glen Sutter. John Anthony Sanders
John Anthony Sanders, 69, of Jerome, passed away Tuesday February 16, 2016, at his home, surrounded by his family, following a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Winnemucca, Nevada on April 15, 1946 to Louis and Ruby Sanders and raised in Fallon, Nevada. He moved to Wells, Nevada in 1958 and lived there until 1996 when he moved to Jerome, Idaho where he lived until he passed away. John made many friends in Nevada and Idaho and was always there to lend a hand to anyone in need. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his children. He was an avid square and round dancer. He loved to read and had a passion for animals. He loved Mustangs and Harleys and loved to travel. He was able to take a final trip last summer to Branson, Missouri with his best friend, Sylvia Hodge and her daughter, Linda. He is survived by his children, Yvonne Sanders of Hagerman, ID, Wayne Sanders(Sherrie) of Wells, NV and Johnna Bailey of Jerome; step-children, Fred Mathis(Michelle) of Fernley, NV, Jeanie Armstrong of Portland, OR, Bill Mathis(Melody) of Sun Valley, NV and Tina Mathis of Reno, NV; his brother, David Sanders(Leslie) of Gooding, ID; sister, Gerrine McLain(James) of Willits, CA; 17 grandchildren; one great-grandson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, mother and sister, Bonnie Sanders. A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 3:00 p.m., Saturday February 20, 2016, at the American Legion Hall, 107 7th Avenue East, Jerome, with pastor Gene Kissinger officiating. In the early 1900’s, Tom Swift was a fictional boy inventor who could solve about any situation with his outlandish inventions. He was the McGuyver of his day. The Tom Swift stories were the creation of Publisher Edward Statemeyer, who also created the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, and the Bobbsey Twins. Statemeyer chose the name “Victor Appleton”, and hired Howard R. Garis to write the books that name. Garis was famous under his own name as the author of Uncle Wiggily Stories. In the 1960’s it seemed like the young created a whole language of terms that didn’t quite match any previous lingo. About the same time elephant jokes were popping out, many of which hand no rhyme or reason. Tom Swifties were also seeing a spot in the 60’s. The Tom Swifties were puns based on the stylistic excesses of Victor Appleton. Jeff M. Thompson
Jeff M. Thompson, 59, a resident of Bliss, Idaho, died February 13, 2016 at St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center surrounded by his family. Jeff was born on February 19, 1956, in Gooding, Idaho, the son of Richard and Rita Thompson. He was educated in Bliss, Idaho. He married Toni A. King on March 18, 1979, in Gooding, Idaho. They made home in various communities in several western states, before settling back in Bliss, while working as a heavy equipment operator. He is survived by his wife, Toni Thompson; parents, Arla and James F. King Jr.; aunt, Jean Maxwell; three daughters, Rita (Anthony) Ramirez of Bliss, Aliesha (Cody) Allred of Emmett, and Kara Boyles of Bliss; two sisters, Beverly Stanton and Debra LaCroix; eight grandchildren, Destiny, Jose Villaycana, Morgan, Kaiden, Trystan, Angus, Lilli, Payton; and Aspen; and one great granchild, Novalee. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joel and Florence; parents, Richard and Rita; aunt, Grace and uncle, Vernon. A celebration of life will be held at the Bliss School Gymnasium, on February, 27, 2016 at 2:00 pm in Bliss, with a potluck dinner to follow at the gym. January 11, 2016 The meeting was called to order at 9:45 a.m. by Chairman Barb McMurdo. Also present were Commissioner Ken Backstrom, Commissioner Ron Chapman, Prosecuting Attorney Matt Pember, Clerk Korri Blodgett, and an individual from the public. The Board reviewed the Agenda. Commissioner Backstrom made a motion to approve the Agenda as posted. Seconded by Commissioner Chapman. Unanimous. The Board discussed electing a Chairman for Fiscal Year 2016. Commissioner Backstrom made a motion to nominate Commissioner McMurdo as the Chairman for 2016. Seconded by Commissioner Chapman. Commissioner Chapman made a motion to nominate Commissioner Backstrom as Vice-Chairman for Fiscal Year 2016. Seconded by Commissioner McMurdo. Planning and Zoning Administrator Dwight Butlin met with the Board to review the redistricting maps to set the 2016 Precincts, in accordance with Idaho Code 34-301. Commissioner Chapman made a motion to accept the boundaries as provided by the redistricting maps. Seconded by Commissioner Backstrom. Unanimous. Upon direction of the Board, Mr. Butlin will contact Geographic Mapping Consultants, Inc., to provide a county map showing the voting precincts along with the legal descriptions. The Board reconvened at 10:00 a.m. and reviewed the Findings of Facts on Mtn View Cemetery with Planning & Zoning Administrator Dwight Butlin. The proceedings were taped. Commissioner Chapman made a motion for the Chairman to sign the Findings of Fact and Conclusions of Law. Seconded by Commissioner Backstrom. Unanimous. The Board discussed the Man-Made Park Project. Commissioner Backstrom stated that Mr. Pridmore was no longer interested in being on the Park project Board and that Mr. Jerry Nelson would be willing to volunteer. Commissioner Backstrom made a motion to appoint Mr. Nelson to the ManMade Park project committee. Seconded by Commissioner Chapman. Unanimous. After further discussion on the park project Commissioner Backstrom also made a motion to contribute $500.00 towards the Man-made Park project. Seconded by Commissioner Chapman. Unanimous. The Board discussed the Firehouse MOU and the yearly support dollar amount. It was a consensus of the Board to propose a $5500.00 dollar amount, retroactive to Nov, 2015, to the city/fire dept. The Board reviewed the bills as presented on the Claims list. Commissioner Backstrom made a motion to pay the
bills as presented. Seconded by Commissioner Chapman. Unanimous. Commissioner Backstrom made a motion to approve the bill to Valley Service. Seconded by Commissioner McMurdo. Commissioner Chapman recused himself from voting. The Board reconvened at 1:00 p.m. and met with Kaylin Dennis to to hear a request for a conditional use application fee waiver for Smokey Bar. Commissioner Chapman made a motion to waive the condition use application unscheduled fee amount of $950.00. Seconded by Commissioner Backstrom. Unanimous.
