NEWS Food Truck for the Senators

We see them on the downtown corner. We see them at the fair. We rarely see them on the road, but we see them everywhere. Food trucks used to be a special treat found only at traveling entertainment events such as fairs and carnivals. For many of us, they have a reputation for indigestion, sending our kids on a sugar high, or worse... food poisoning. But to be honest, those things are mostly our own fault. Most of the food trucks we see in our area serve Mexican food, but in some cities food trucks provide everything from hamburgers to sushi. Whether is it high brow or low brow, food trucks provide great fast food. And if you are still hesitant to eat at a food truck, the State of Idaho requires all of them to have a Mobile Food Establishment License and meet the standards required by the Idaho Food Code. While the main benefit of a food truck is its mobility, in the last few years they have provided a way for many school districts to achieve social distancing (Covid-19) while serving food to students. In the eastern United States it is common for schools to have a food truck. Here in Idaho, there is just one - the Gooding School District. Anji Branch has been the Child Nutrition Director for the district for 21 years, and for the last ten years she has dreamed of having a food truck. When Covid hit, the district found themselves with ESSER funds (Elementary & Secondary School Emergency Relief) and excess Child Nutrition Program funds that needed to be spent. After several months of searching, Anji found just what was needed and in December of 2021, a truck was delivered. Over the last couple of months, food service staff have been learning how to use the hightech food truck and have been serving lunch in front of the High School on Thursdays. Just like the regular cafeteria, lunch at the food truck is free for the students and many are choosing to stay on campus rather than driving into town for food. Beginning in March the plan is to have the food truck operating four-days-a-week. With Covid rapidly disappearing from the political landscape of America, one might think this food truck is too much too late. Fortunately, in addition to being used for school lunches, it will replace the concession stand for outdoor sporting events and facilitate a summer feeding program for kids. If you see the big red and black van with a red fork and "Senator StrEat" on the side, its just the Gooding Child Nutrition folks feeding kids and having fun!

District tournaments for Girls basketball finished up this week with surprises and disapointment. In the 1AD2 division, #1 Dietrich went all the way to the championship game only to lose to #2 Carey (45-31), then lost to #3 Richfield (45-42). That game ended with a win for Teton (65-47). In Boys 3A District Tournament basketball, #4 Gooding lost to #1 Buhl Monday night (47-24). The Senators will head to Kimberly tonight, game at 6 p.m. #2 Wendell lost the first game of the 2A tournament to #3 Valley (60-50).
