Camas Students Perform in Twin Falls Concert On Wednesday of last week, the annual District IV Junior High Honor Band & Honor Choir concert was held at the O’Leary Gym in Twin Falls.

Over 500 students had one practice day prior to the concert, and then spent the majority of Wednesday practicing together with each section (choir, band & orchestra) performing four pieces.

enson (percussion), Maddie Kirkaldie (trumpet), and Marcus Quinonez (clarinet); and four students in the Honor Choir: Sam Brandhagen (Tenor), Sammy McFayden (Alto), Laura Thompson (Alto), and Xyler Niehay (Tenor).

Teachers and students put together an astounding performance in just two days, all to the enjoyment of parents and other members of the audiance.

District Basketball Tournaments Begin

Tonight in Shoshone, the Dietrich Blue Devil Ladies will face off against the Carey Panthers for the 1AD2 District Basketball Championship game at 7:30 p.m.

The Dietrich Girls finished the regular season in 4th place behind Carey at #3, Lighthouse Christian at #2, and Castleford at #1 in the Northside Conference.

After knocking down Hansen 61-31 last Friday, Dietrich went on to defeat Castleford 48 to 35 in Saturday’s tournament game.

If the Blue Devils win tonight, they will head off to the the State Tournament held on

February 16-18. If they lose, they may well have to face Castleford again to win a place at the State Tournament.

The second place game will be played this Thursday at 7:00 p.m.

The Shoshone Indian Ladies finished the 1AD1 Snake River Conference regular season #3, just behind Oakley at #2 and Valley at #1. They won their first District Tournament game against Raft River 52-41, but went down to Valley 43-34 in their second game.

Finishing the season #5, the Hagerman Lady Pirates put down Glenns Ferry 43-32 in their first tournament game, then lost to Oakley 36-25.

Last night, Shoshsone and Hagerman played each other for a chance to keep their State Tournament dream

alive. The winner of that game will play either Valley or Oakley this Thursday in Murtaugh at 7:00 p.m.

The winner will proceed to the State Play-In game in American Falls this Saturday.

With only four teams, the 3A Sawtooth Central Idaho Conference is a short tournament. The #2 Gooding Senator Ladies went down to #3 Buhl in their first game 42-34, but came back to defeat Filer 61-39.

Monday night Gooding again faced off against Buhl, and once again, Buhl came out on top with the win (43-37).

Buhl will play #1 Kimberly for the District Championship tonight at 7:00 p.m. at CSI. The loser of that game will head off to American Falls for the State Play-In game.

hydropower intakes, agriculture pipelines, reservoirs, and boats. In the west they are found in states like Montana, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and California, but not yet in Idaho, Washington, or Oregon. Our district’s economy is heavily reliant upon agriculture and recreation, so the impending introduction of mussels in Idaho is of great concern. I am part of a bipartisan group working on a bill to implement the recommendations of the Invasive Species Working Group. Invasive species are a critical threat to our economy and way of life, and we are making every effort to prevent their entry into Idaho.

Anti-Immigration Bill We saw some particularly egregious legislation in the House this week including what is known as the “anti-immigration bill”. The bill requires law enforcement, at their own discretion, to question the citizenship status of individuals they arrest. Agribusiness is Idaho’s largest industry and it relies heavily on many of these individuals as its workforce. This bill harms Idaho families and rural communities, and deeply impacts Idaho’s economy. It is government sanctioned profiling, and I am opposed to its passage.

Public Hearing: Protein Processing Plant in Shoshone Last year the Shoshone Planning & Zoning Commission made a decision that a Protein Processing Plant proposed for the east side of Shoshone did not require any public hearings. The basis for that decision was that the project is a food processing plant.

On January 3rd of this year, the City Council held a Public Outreach meeting to help community members understand the project and to defray any concerns. Subsequent to that meeting, Mr. Hugh Royal filed an appeal to the P&Z decision, specifically their decision to allow the project to continue without a special use permit.

Next Monday, February 13th, at 7:00 p.m. the Shoshone City Council will hold a Public Hearing at City Hall (207 S. Rail St. West) to hear public comment, written or oral, on the Appeal.

According to Brandon Stokes the proposed protein processing plant would process tallow, meat, bone meal, and possibly salt hides. It would initially employ up to 15 people and have a starting wage of 15-18 dollars an hour. Regarding objectionable odors, Mr. Stokes said that 97% of the smell produced by the plant is filtered out.

One major concern by the City Council was wastewater. Mr. Stokes indicated that the plant would generate 5,000-10,000 gallons of treated wastewater a day.

John Peyman, the city’s maintenance supervisor, said the sewer system could handle that amount of wastewater easily, but was worried about the particulates involved and asked for specifics. Mr. Stokes told Mr. Peyman he would get him more information on that issue.

Lena Nash Rice, age 99, went to her heavenly home on January 31, 2017, in Boise, Idaho. Lena was born on May 15, 1917, in Zena, Oregon, to Ray and Grace Nash.

She was 14 when her family moved to Hill City, Idaho, after purchasing the grocery and dry goods store. It was there that she met and later married the love of her life, Gwinn Rice. Hill City was always their home where they farmed, raised their three children, and were active church and community members.

Lena’s kitchen was the hub of life on the farm. She was known for her hospitality, her wonderful meals, and especially for her homemade bread and delicious cinnamon rolls! There was always room for one more around her kitchen table, which was also the gathering place for playing the many games she loved.

In 1968, Lena was selected as the Idaho Mother of the Year. In 1990 she was chosen as Senior Mother of the Year for Idaho’s Centennial Celebration. During this time, she co-authored The Lasting Legacy, a history of Camas Prairie. She treasured this time spent with her neighbors and friends listening to and recording their stories.

Lena looked for and found the good in every person and every situation, and her smiles and kindness brightened the lives of everyone around her. She was an example of true Christian love, and a wonderful mentor to countless family members, young people, and friends whom she prayed for daily.

At 93, she retired from her work at the Hill City Farm and moved to Boise where she lived at Morning Star Independent & Assisted Living making many new friends and sharing her joy for life. We thank them all for their amazing love and care.

Lena was preceded in death by her husband, Gwinn. She is survived by her sister Pearl Ruby of Mountain Home, Idaho; her brother Ray Nash of Springfield, Oregon; daughter Joy (Tom) Gill of Mountain Home, Idaho; daughter Norma (John) Odiaga of Jerome, Idaho; son Jim (Tina) Rice of Hill City and Meridian, Idaho; 7 grandchildren--Kim (Curt) Phillips, Todd (Darci) Gill, James (Shelly) Rice, Joe (Stacie) Rice, Amaya Odiaga (Hans-Peter Marshall), Jordan (Karen) Rice, Annie (Jamon) Frostenson; 16 great-grandchildren; and a multitude of friends and relatives.

Funeral services will take place on Friday, March 3, 2017, at 1 p.m. at Cloverdale Funeral Home in Boise. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Lena’s name to the Fairfield Community Church, Fairfield, Idaho 83327, or to the Boise Rescue Mission, 308 S. 24th St., Boise, Idaho 83702.

Afton Louise Westfall Diemart

Afton Louise Westfall Diemart, 69, a resident of Wendell, died January 31, 2017, with her family in her home after a long illness.

Afton was born on February 12, 1947 in Wendell, Idaho, the daughter of James Hall and India Clarissa Westfall. She was raised in Southern Idaho, and Northern Utah, graduating in 1965 at Davis High School in Kaysville, Utah. She graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science and Education at Kansas State Teacher’s College in 1969. She graduated with her Master’s in Education Degree at Wichita State University in 1974.

She married the love of her life, Roy Charles Diemart on January 28, 1967 in Hamilton, Kansas. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity on August 17, 1974. Afton was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and she was very active in Primary and with the Young Women’s program.

Afton was well known for her cooking and was able to make a masterpiece meal from humble ingredients. She was able to write any poem in a moment’s notice. She wrote inspiring pieces for her children which they cherish to this day. She created soft and beautiful quilts for each of her grandchildren for their baptism. This was to remind them of the comforting influence of the Holy Ghost. Afton was an avid vegetable gardener and enjoyed teaching her children how to preserve the fruits of their labor. She loved music and reading uplifting books. She loved to travel and enjoyed visiting family members across the continent.

She loved to teach but more importantly cared deeply about the welfare of her students.

She was known to go above and beyond to make certain her students’ needs were met.

She taught Elementary students for forty years, retiring in 2009.

Afton is survived by: her children, Doreen (Sam) Begay, Jennifer (Sean) Olson, Melissa (James) Thorne, Sarah (Chris) Wendell, Gregory (Anndrea) Diemart, Charles (Tara) Diemart, and Rachael (Nicholas) Havens; her sisters Dorothy, Vernelle, Janine, Cheryl, and Virginia and her brothers, Richard and William. She was also a grandmother of 20 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Roy Charles Diemart and her father, James Hall Westfall.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at the Wendell LDS Church with burial at the Wendell Cemetery.

Fred Jay Hainline, 87, a resident of Gooding, passed away on Monday, February 6, 2017 at the Bennett Hills Care Center in Gooding. Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service.

Alma Susana Ramos

Alma Susana Ramos, 33, a resident of Gooding, passed away on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Alma was born on August 28, 1983 in Guanajuato, Mexico, the daughter of Carmen Ramos and Audelia Magana. She was raised and educated in Mexico and Gooding, Idaho.

She married Melchor Juarez on September 24, 2005 in Gooding. They made their home in Gooding where Alma worked in the bakery department at Ridley’s Grocery.

Alma is survived by: her husband, Melchor Juarez and her two daughters, Adriana Y. and Anali S.; her parents, J. Carmen Ramos and Audelia Magana; her brother, Juan Ramos; and three sisters, Rosi Ramos, Marisol Ramos and Ana Ramos.

She was preceded in death by Guadalupe Botello, Miguel Ramos, Consuelo Santollo, Natividad Magana, Cleofas Rodriguez, Magdalena Rodriguez and Teresa Villagomez.

Funeral mass was held on Friday, February 3, 2017, at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Gooding. Burial followed at the Elmwood Cemetery in Gooding.

How Winter Big Game Feeding Works

If the prognostications of Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania carry any weight in Idaho, then we are set for six more weeks of winter. After having a number of milder winters in a row, this year’s winter seems harsh, even though it is pretty typical for what used to be considered a normal winter.

While humans have been inconvenienced, big game animals have become more noticeable as they seek to deal with the conditions.

As winter persists, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game has started to get more questions from concerned citizens about winter feeding of deer, elk, and even pronghorns.

“We are concerned about the welfare of big game animals in challenging winter conditions,” said Jim White, regional supervisor for Fish and Game’s Upper Snake Region. “The decision to feed or not to feed wildlife in winter is based on many factors, some of which include winter conditions that are measured weekly by staff throughout the region.”

Each region in the state has adopted a specific set of criteria that can be measured on a site by site basis to determine how winter conditions are progressing. Reaching specific criteria values does not automatically trigger winter feeding, but it does serve to begin the process of determining when and where winter feeding could occur.

These criteria take into account both human and natural factors. They include actual or imminent threat of depredation to private property; threat to public safety, including traffic hazards; excessive mortality affecting the recovery of big game herds; and limited or unavailable winter forage caused by fire or unusual weather.

Other important indicators are daytime temperatures, snow depth, and snow crusting. Severe crusting can require animals to burn more energy to travel through snow access and forage. All these indicators are correlated to deer and elk body condition. Both visual observations and physical measurements taken continued at the top next page 8...

Jane worked hard all her life. She ran three successful businesses and by the time she was 50, her investments allowed her to retire from that life and move on to another adventure.

She bought a 180-acre farm in Southern Idaho, fixed up the older house that had been there for nearly 80 years, and started building a greenhouse to grow vegetables for herself and maybe a little extra to sell to local restaurants.

Just down the road from Jane’s little farm lived John, a man who had worked hard all his life raising cattle. John’s occupation supplied all his needs, but never much extra. He had tried to do a little investing once and lost almost everything he put into the venture.

Quite a few other people had built greenhouses in the area and he never gave any of them much thought. But, when Jane started building her greenhouse, he came unglued.

The problem was that John heard from a “reliable source” that Jane was an advocate of legalizing Hemp. Apparently (he didn’t actually hear any of the conversations), she had talked about the economic advantages of growing Hemp during a community meeting.

John immediately started a campaign to

stop Jane from finishing her building project by tell-ing everyone who would listen that Jane was going to bring in growlights that would make the greenhouse visible for miles around during the night. He also told everyone it was perfectly clear that she intended to grow that bane of society - marijuana.

Jane’s construction was briefly halted while the sheriff and the building inspector checked out what she was doing. Jane honestly admitted that she wouldn’t mind using her land to grow Hemp, but for the foreseeable future, it just wasn’t possible. Both officials knew the whole thing was silly and even though her greenhouse would be the largest one in the area, their conversation with Jane only confirmed what they already knew - she was doing nothing wrong.

Of course, that wasn’t enough for John, and he convinced a handful of his neighbors to join him in filing a lawsuit against the local government for allowing Jane to continue building her greenhouse. He wasn’t going to let some “RICH CALIFORNIAN” spoil the natural beauty his community!

In order to implement a winter feeding program, Fish and Game must declare an emergency based on Puzzle #1 - Easy environmental and biological conditions, working in consultation with regional winter feeding advisory committees. The winter feeding advisory committee for the Upper Snake Region includes five members representing landowner, sportsman, and business interests. As local residents, advisory committee members are tuned into local conditions and work closely with Iish and Game to decide on how to specifically address each potential feeding situation.

Currently, a large-scale emergency feeding operation of over 3,000 elk is underway at Tex Creek Wildlife Management Area. The main purpose of this site is to mitigate for forage destroyed by the Henrys Creek Fire this summer, and hopefully, reduce the potential for human conflicts. A much smaller feeding operation is now starting for mule deer that have traditionally congregated east of Idaho Falls near the mouth of Henrys Creek. Feeding is being done to reduce potential conflicts and not because of nutritional concerns at this time.

This herd has grown this year to about 300 animals due to the deer displaced by the fire. Near Arco, Fish and Game is also working to address concerns over pronghorns that have moved onto Highway 20.

© A young teenaged card jobber (one who sold postcards) during the 1903 postcard craze, came back to his home in Norfolk, Nebraska, to the family store in 1906. Selling postcards from overseas was hard work. When asked why he did, his answer was, “All I was trying to do was make a living. If you didn’t work, you didn’t eat. I like to eat.” His family had been left by his father and it was up to him and a few slightly older brothers to keep the family alive.

Joyce Clyde Hall (the young teenager) was convinced that foreign postcards were running their course and that greeting cards were more a form of communication - they were a social custom.

J.C. and his brothers produced Valentine’s Day and Christmas cards. Their company (of Kansas City) was known as Hall Brothers. In 1915 a fire destroyed their inventory (mainly Valentine cards) to the note of $17,000. J.C. borrowed some money and was able to get a printing press. They could now produce their own cards.

During World War I many cards were purchased to send to soldiers. People wanted to know about their enlisted family members. The card business grew rapidly. During the rush on cards the Hall Brothers ran out of the white and green paper used to compliment the plain brown wrapper. JC’s brother Rollie used some fancy red colored French paper used primarily to line envelopes to wrap something. From that time forward colored wrapping paper was the choice (they invented modern wrapping paper).

In 1922 the company expanded throughout the county. Employees of Hall Brothers went from 4 to 120 people, and the card line increased from holiday to greeting cards. In 1928 the company adopted the name Hallmark and the name was printed on the back of every card.

The hallmark symbol was used by goldsmiths in the 14th century to denote quality. The Canadian card maker, William E. Coutts LTD, became an affiliate of the Halls in 1931 making the Hall’s first international venture.

In 1954 the Halls officially changed their company name to Hallmark, and in 1958, the Canadian Coutts company was acquired. In 1986, Shoebox and Maxine card lines were added. Hoops and Yoyo, along with Revilo Cards, became added members.

Friends Cards in 1994, and in 2000 Image Craft Cards were added.

Currently, Hallmark (still a family business) has 800 artists, designers, stylist writers, editors, and photographers. 19,000 new and redesigned cards are done each year with 48,000 products in its model line at any one time. There are 17,000 employees, 6000 in Kansas City alone. They are following licenses of 35 plus major corporations. Crayola Crayons and the Hallmark Channel with movies are also owned by Hallmark.
