Camas County Fair Dates Announced On Friday of last week, the Camas County Fair Board announced that the 2015 Camas County Fair will be held August 6th thru August 9th.

The Camas County Fair is normally held on the first weekend in August (July 30 thru August 2), however another major event has been scheduled for those dates. Rather than compete that event, the fair board decided to postpone the fair by one week.

The board is also looking for additional - energetic - people wanting to serve

on a fair committee. If you would like to help with this great community event, contact Gayle Bachtell, Connie Funkhouser, Vicki Cook, Deanna Hoskinson, Wes Walker, or Sam Stroud.

The conflicting event to be held on July 31st thru August 2nd is the Mountain Home Country Music Festival. This three day music concert is expected to bring in 20,000 plus people to the concert site located about twenty miles west of Fairfield.

The Mountain Home Country Music Festival is the latest addition to the Willamette Country Music Concert series which has events in Brownsville, Oregon (August 14-16) and Cape Blanco on the Oregon coast (July 31-Aug 2).

The Golden Year Senior Center in Shoshone will hold their annual congregate meeting on Feburary 10, 2015, at 12 noon. The terms of four Board Members have expired and an election will be held to fill those positions. The annual finacial report for the center will be presented as well. The history of the Camas Prairie is full of exciting stories - some of which are true, and some of which are just fun to listen to.

On February 21st at the Camas County Library, come and enjoy a special Historical / Hysterical Recollection: Early Years on the Prairie presented by Wes Fields from 7 to 8 p.m. The presentation will feature stories about early years and the people who lived on Camas Prairie which will include a slide show of very special pictures.

Hearing for Wendell Senior Center

This Thursday, February 5th, the City of Wendell will hold a public hearing to consider a Special Use Permit request by Wendell Senior Citizens, Inc, to allow a Senior Citizen/Community Events Center to operate in a Residential zone. The public hearing will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers (375 First Avenue East). The public is invited to hear the petition and to make comments on the proposal.

Lincoln County Historical Society

Call for Art

All art mediums are welcome to be part of the Lincoln County Historical Society’s Annual Art Show to take place on February 21st and 22nd.

“Every year we meet new artists and are overwhelmed by the quality of talent that comes through the door,” said Salli Hubbs, the historical society’s chairman. “It’s a great event to celebrate our local talent.”

The show will take place at the museum, located at 112 West B Street across from the Lincoln County Courthouse, and will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

Artists can deliver their entries Friday the 20th during the afternoon and evening. For entry forms and more information contact Salli Hubbs at 316-1003.

5th Annual West Magic Ice Fishing Tournament February 14th & 15th

Come rain, snow, or shine, the 5th Annual West Magic Ice Fishing Tournament is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, February 14th and 15th. Registration starts at 7:00 a.m. sharp each morning at the lodge. No pre-registration is available. Cash prizes will be awarded as well as hourly raffle prizes. This year’s GRAND PRIZE has be graciously donated by Cactus Petes.

Glenn Edward Hope

Glenn Edward Hope passed away on Tuesday January 27, 2015 at his home in Wendell, Idaho surrounded by his loving wife and 4 children.

He was born on January 13, 1935 in Jennings, OK to Harvey and Clara Hope. Glenn was raised and educated in Oklahoma graduating from Jennings High School in May of 1952. He served in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1958.

On December 22, 1962 Glenn married Cristie Veeder in Bellflower, California. They celebrated their 52nd anniversary just before Christmas. After living in several different places Glenn and Cristie finally settled in Lander, Wyoming in 1966. There they raised 4 children: Galen, Chris, Michael, and Michelle. Glenn worked for U.S. Steel for 17 years. In 1985 the family relocated to Lake County, California where Glenn worked for Homestake Mining Company. In 2004 Glenn and Cristie moved to Wendell, Idaho.

Glenn’s many interests included hunting and fishing as well as traveling with his wife to spend time with family and friends. In the last 11 years there have been multiple trips to Nevada, Wyoming, and Alaska to see his kids and grandkids.

Glenn is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Cristie. He is also survived by 4 children and their spouses; Galen (Pam) of Winnemucca, NV, Chris (Tina) of Anchorage, AK, Michael (Pauline) of Buffalo, WY, and Michelle (Ron) of Glenrock, WY. Glenn was blessed with 5 beautiful grandchildren, Melissa, Aaron, (Galen) Katelyn (Michael), and Spencer, and Nathan (Michelle) whom he loved dearly. His sister, Betty Jo Combest of Ponca City, OK and his father in-law Lloyd Veeder of Oceanside, CA as well as many nieces and nephews, cousins, and dear friends are among those who will remember Glenn.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, January 31st, 2015, at Living Waters Presbyterian Church in Wendell, Idaho. A second service is planned for later this year in Casper, WY where he will be interred at the Oregon Trail Veterans Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service – Wendell Chapel.

Diana Wolfe

Diana Louise Berkley Wolfe 58, of Gooding, passed away Monday February 2, 2015, after a long hard battle with breast cancer.

Diana was born January 14, 1957, in Twin Falls, Idaho, to James Donald Berkley and Norma Louise Peterson. She was the 3rd born in her family after Jane and Jimmy. She graduated from Twin Falls High School and attended the College of Southern Idaho.

Diana married Kent Wolfe on November 27, 1989 in Gooding, Idaho. They had two beautiful children, Rance and JaNeil. She enjoyed spending time with her family while hunting, fishing, and camping. She also had a passion for crafting and her puppies.

Diana is survived by: her husband, Kent and her children, Rance and JaNeil, all of Gooding; her mother, Norma Berkley of Twin Falls; a brother, Jimmy Berkley of Twin Falls; a sister, Beverly (Kenny) Wilder of St. Anthony; and brother-in-law, Bruce Allbright of Idaho Falls; and many nieces, nephews, and in-laws. She was preceded in death by her father, James Donald Berkley and sister, Jane Allbright.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, on Friday, February 6, 2015 at Demaray Funeral Service – Gooding Chapel.

Fluoride varnish, which is a gel-like substance that is “painted” on the child’s teeth with a small brush, strengthens tooth enamel to reduce and/or prevent tooth decay. The varnish is very safe since it’s applied directly to the teeth, and children can receive a fluoride varnish application as soon as they get their first teeth. ·

“The Toano Road” with Shauna Robinson

The completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, spawned the construction of four significant freight and stage routes into southwestern and southern Idaho from northern Utah, and Nevada. These roads, originating in railroad towns along the Central Pacific Railroad, established a vital link for goods shipped from the East Coast and California to the mining camps and towns in the southern reaches of Idaho Territory.

One of these major roads was the Toano Road, which was surveyed in 1870 and promoted as a fast-freight road. By following this route across northern Nevada to its confluence with the Oregon Trail west of today’s Hagerman, freighters could reach Boise in a “speedy” six days. The “Toano and Idaho” line had limited success due to competition from the Kelton Road, unexpected events in mining towns south of Toano, and construction of the railroad through southern Idaho in 1884. Nonetheless, its ten years of existence had an important impact on the early mining towns and settlements of southern and southwestern Idaho.

From 2003-2005, the Twin Falls County Historic Preservation Commission conducted a survey of the historic Toano Road in Twin Falls County, mapping and photographing the route as it looks today. Please join Shauna as she takes you “road-hunting” for the Toano Road in Idaho.

A native of Idaho, Shauna Robinson is a retired teacher, having taught social studies, history and German for thirty-two years, primarily in Twin Falls at Robert Stuart Junior High. She has been active for many years in state and local groups that promote Idaho’s heritage, currently serving on the Twin Falls County Historic Preservation Commission, the Herrett Forum Committee, the Idaho State Historical Society’s Sites Review Board and the BLM’s Regional Advisory Council. Shauna also has extensive experience with the Forest Service and the BLM as a volunteer for archaeological projects in central and southern Idaho.

(208) 934-8678 or (208) 732-6442 Introduction to Facebook: On Wednesday, February 11 at the North Side Center, Victoria Thurber will teach this class from 5:30-7:30 pm.

Cost to register is $15 which includes the use of desktop computers. The course is also offered on Thursday, February 12 from 6-8 pm at the Lincoln County Community Center in Shoshone taught by Payson Reese. The cost to register in this workshop is just $12 and participants are asked to bring a fully charged laptop to the class.

Both workshops will introduce participants to the basics of social networking and get them into Facebook by learning how to create and personalize an account. Participants will learn about friend requests, group invites and how to post and share photos and videos. The workshops will include security, too, like filters, privacy, settings, and an examination of Facebook myths. At the end of the workshop, they will leave the class feeling comfortable about being on Facebook.

Beginning Computers: This course will be taught by Victoria Thurber on Thursdays, February 12-March 5 from 5:30-7:30 pm at the North Side Center in Gooding. The registration fee is $35. In this course, participants of all ages will learn how to find and work the basic functions of a computer.

We will learn how to navigate the inner workings of the search bar such as “My Computer”, “My Documents” and “My Pictures” as well as the basics of Microsoft Word and everyday email.

Paper-Pieced Foundation Built Quilting: This workshop will taught by Kaylynn Cheney on Thursday, February 12 at the Gooding County Extension office (203 Lucy Lane in Gooding). The first workshop if from 1-4 pm followed by the second from 6-9 pm. The registration fee for either session of the workshop is $19.

In this hands-on informational workshop, participants will learn how to paper piece a quilt block in just three hours. Participants will have fabric to make four six inch quilt blocks, or they may be sewn together to form one 11 inch quilt block. Machines and all supplies will be provided for the class. Please choose either the afternoon session or evening session when you register.

This $1.86 million project, under contract with Western Construction, of Boise, is expected to be complete by June.

2: Reconstruction of Idaho 46 (Idaho Street) through the City of Wendell will rebuild and pave the roadway, replace sections of sidewalk to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, and complete base stabilization and repave West Main Street from Idaho Street to Interstate 84. The work through Wendell will last about three months, beginning in May or June. The $2 million project is under contract with Idaho Sand and Gravel, of Jerome.

3: Beginning in early to mid-summer, a project to apply an asphalt overlay and sealcoat next to the reconstruction in Wendell and extending into the city of Gooding.

This $2.16 million project, under contract with Western Construction, will impact traffic for about a month and includes a mill-and-inlay of pavement in the U.S. 26/Idaho 46 junction in Gooding.

4: Repair work to the Ken Curtis Bridge over the Snake River north of Buhl is expected to begin in late spring or early summer. The $560,130 project will repair cracking in the concrete, repair eroded areas near the abutments, protect slopes, overlay the driving surface and upgrade guardrail. Cannon Builders, of Blackfoot, is the contractor for this project.

5: The final project to replace two other culvert crossings will begin after the irrigation season ends. The work includes replacing the W-9 canal bridge about a mile south of I-84 and the Cedar Draw bridge at about 1767 East on Bob Barton Road (milepost 93.4). This $1.26 million project replaces both bridges with concrete box culverts, widens the roadway and includes guardrail. The project is under contract with Cannon Builders.

Three of the projects, those south of Wendell, are the first series of projects to upgrade portions of the roadway to state standards since ITD gained ownership in 2010.

Additional improvements, to the 14.75-mile section between Buhl and Wendell, will continue in future years as funding and scheduling allows, but no further projects are scheduled in the current five-year plan.

Additional information about each project will be made available when scheduling is finalized.

Conservation Stewardship Program

The Natural Resources Conservation Service is now accepting applications for the 2015 Conservation Stewardship Program. Producers who maintain a high level of conservation stewardship on their land may be eligible to receive compensation for their efforts. Applications received by February 27, 2015, will be considered for this year’s funding.

“The Conservation Stewardship Program emphasizes conservation implementation. The program offers financial incentives to farmers and ranchers to manage their farms, ranches, and timber lands to conserve natural resources,” said Travis Thomason, acting Idaho NRCS State Conservationist.

“The program encourages agricultural and forestry producers to address resource problems by improving and maintaining existing conservation activities as well as undertaking additional conservation ‘enhancements’,” Thomason said.

The 2014 Farm Bill expanded the program’s conservation activity list. Conservation activities, called enhancements, will offer participants greater options to meet their conservation needs and protect natural resources on their land. Enhancements include practices that improve soil health, grazing rotations, or wildlife habitat; treat crowded forest stands; or facilitate tillage system changes.

Another new change is using the program to broaden the impacts of NRCS’ Landscape Conservation Initiatives. In Idaho, a pilot effort will focus on conservation activities to improve sage grouse habitat on private lands.

“Our Landscape Conservation Initiatives rally together landowners in a wide-ranging area to make conservation improvements to address particular resource issues; the Conservation Stewardship Program is a great tool for that,” said Thomason. “We hope with including CSP we’ll be bringing more farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners to these efforts.”

Land stewardship generates significant environmental benefits including clean air, clean water, and healthy soils and helps sustain food and fiber production for the citizens of Idaho. Since the program began in 2009, NRCS has enrolled more than 766,000 acres in Idaho.

The following is a summary of Ordinance No. 257A, originally passed by the City Council of the City of Fairfield, Camas County, Idaho, as Ordinance No. 257, on September 11, 2014, and re-adopted by the City Council of the City of Fairfield, Camas County, Idaho, on January 15, 2015: SECTION 1.
