News Fishing in the New Year

For some anglers, the best thing about New Year’s is the start of the spring steelhead season, which opens January 1.

Anglers are reminded that they will need a 2015 fishing license and steelhead permit.

Spring steelhead season is open on the: · Salmon River from its mouth to the posted boundary 100 yards downstream of the Sawtooth Fish Hatchery weir, near the town of Stanley. · Little Salmon River from its mouth to the U.S. Highway 95 Bridge near Smokey Boulder Road. · Snake River from the Washington state line at the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater rivers upstream to Oxbow Dam. · Clearwater River mainstem and Middle Fork Clearwater River from its mouth to Clear Creek. · North Fork Clearwater River from its mouth to Dworshak Dam. · South Fork Clearwater River from its mouth to the confluence of American and Red Rivers. · Boise River from its mouth to the Barber Dam.

The season runs through April 30 in most areas, except: · On the Salmon River from Lake Creek Bridge to Long Tom Creek, about a quarter mile upstream of the Middle Fork, the season ends March 31. · On the Little Salmon River, the season runs through May 15. · On the Snake River from Hells Canyon Dam to Oxbow Dam, the season runs through May 31. · On the Boise River upstream to Barber Dam, the season ends May 31.

Steelhead are in the Boise River only when stocked by Idaho Fish and Game.

Here steelhead are defined as rainbow trout longer than 20 inches with a clipped adipose fin. During November, 950 steelhead were stocked in the Boise River. Barbless hooks are not required in the Boise, but anglers must have a steelhead permit to fish for and keep steelhead.

Steelhead anglers must have a valid Idaho fishing license and steelhead permit. Steelhead anglers may use only barbless hooks (except in the Boise), and may keep only hatchery steelhead marked with a clipped adipose fin. All other steelhead must be released unharmed.

The statewide steelhead limits for the spring 2015 season three per day and nine in possession.

The statewide limit for the spring season is 20 steelhead. Once limits are reached, anglers must stop fishing.

Hunt of a Lifetime

Buy your favorite hunter a chance to win the hunt of a lifetime. The first drawing is still several months away, but it’s not too early to enter Idaho Fish and Game’s Super Hunt.

The Super Hunt is a fundraising drawing for the ultimate hunting opportunity.

The tags are handed out to winners in two drawings.

Entries are drawn for elk, deer, and pronghorn and moose tags. Winners can participate in any open hunt in the state for deer, elk, pronghorn or moose. That includes general hunts and controlled hunts.

The first drawing is in June when entries are drawn for eight elk, eight deer and eight pronghorn hunts as well as one moose hunt. One Super Hunt Combo entry also will be drawn that will entitle the winner to four hunts – one each elk, deer, pronghorn and moose.

Shoveling/snowblowing

While in Nampa, Idaho, near midmorning in time, I decided to stop at a local restaurant to get something to eat whether it was breakfast, brunch, or lunch. The cafe had an entry hall similar to a small lobby to get out of the weather. Inside what I coined as the lobby, there was a white eraser bulletin listing the daily specials. Near the end of the listing was a hamburger special called the “Elvis Burger.”

My first thought was they were going to sell the sandwich with hamburger patty gone - after all, Elvis is gone. Seems to me I remember his passing in 1977.

My second thought was that the special was a take out sandwich, then you could hear the words, “Elvis has left the building.” (This could lead to several parking lot sightings of the Elvis.)

I didn’t want to seem a little backward by asking, “What is an Elvis Burger?” Tabling the thought, I ordered hashbrowns and gravy. They are one of my favorite stand-bys.

For the biggest percent of the time, hashbrowns with gravy are a good fit without much being wrong.

Another guy and a lady came in and sat behind me. He saw the second white eraser board in the middle of the cafe announcing the “Elvis Burger.” He said to his co-guest, “I wonder what an Elvis Burger is? I wonder if you have to say, THANK YOU, THANK YOU VERY MUCH when you receive such a burger.” The waitress came to his table and he asked her, “What is an Elvis Burger?” Now, I didn’t have to ask the question. Her reply... it was a burger with peanut butter, bananas, and bacon.

I have been to Tennessee and a peanut butter/banana sandwich is a common thing. They sell them in cafes. I can accept that, but I’m a little slow on the peanut butter, banana, and hamburger combo highlighted with bacon. Maybe Elvis ate those kind of sandwiches, but I don’t own any cookbooks depicting his favorite foods.

Years back my friend, Jim Super, met me in Meridian, Idaho, at the Hungry Onion Drive-In. We were both visiting in the same vehicle. The car hop waitress came out and said, “Tee, I know you want the “T” Burger and what do you want, sir?” she said to Jim. Jim asked her want a “T” Burger was. She told him it was a sandwich they named after me since I had eaten so many of them.

Not believing what he had heard, Jim said, “You have a sandwich named after Tee?” “Yes, sir, we sure do, but it is not on the menu,” she replied.

“What does it have in it?” Jim then asked.

Letter to the Editor I would like to thank everyone for the kind and honest comment to me about the previous letter.

Billy, I still have not read any of your letters. People tell me they can’t get the banjo music out of their heads after reading them.

Some of your old childhood school mates have contacted me. Why don’t you use your real name any more?

I think Ward is a vary nice name. Sounds like big problems can start at an early age. Too bad about that class reunion, it must have been so embarrassing. Try being kind and honest, it can lead you to a better place. People can be so forgiving.

I am not saying that a big change would be easy for you, but with some really hard work, therapy, and medication, you could be on your way to a better life. We could have a nice hopeful conversation on the drive to your first appointment.

You will have to leave your gun at home of course, but I will protect you. People are more kind, forgiving, and smarter than you think. Just think of the potential happiness.

Jim refused only because he had just come from the dentist where he had a tooth extracted. He ordered a milkshake while still looking at me with surprise.

At many restaurants I have had the same sandwich. The Wrangler here in Fairfield has even fixed them for me.

McDonalds and Jack-In-The-Box fix them my way also.

It all goes to show one’s personal taste beats mass production. Where is Elvis when you need a tasting King.

This is my “Cup of Tee” and plate with a Tee Burger.
