Winter Events with Idaho Parks and Recreation

There are plenty of upcoming outdoor events to celebrate the new year! Several Idaho State Parks are hosting a First Day Hikes (Jan 1) event as well as the annual Free Ski/Winter Access Day (Jan 7). Some details are still being arranged, please contact the parks directly for latest and most up-to-date information.
FIRST DAY HIKES:
City of Rocks/Castle Rocks State Park - Almo: A guided snowshoe hike (weatherdependent). Meet at the Visitor Center at 1 p.m. Snowshoers can bring their own snowshoes or check out some from the park. It is also recommended to bring water and a snack.
RSV Cases Declining, COVID-19 Cases Plateau
As the respiratory season continues, South Central Public Health District (SCPHD) again urges residents to stay home when they are sick and take extra precautions to protect their health. Data from the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare (IDHW) show hospital admissions for influenza patients increased from 185 patients two weeks ago to 283 patients last week. Nearly twice as many patients were admitted with influenza compared to COVID-19 last week. Meanwhile, the positivity rate for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) lab tests in the state have mostly plateaued around 20 percent over the last couple of weeks. In south central Idaho, the positivity rate sits at about 23 percent for the season. These rates are much higher than usual for this time of year.
Many respiratory viruses are contagious before symptoms start so practicing good hygiene at all times can help prevent disease spread. SCPHD recommends people:
• Stay home when sick.
• Wash hands often, especially after sneezing, coughing, using a bathroom, or blowing your nose. It is always important to wash your hands before touching your face.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth whenever possible.
• Cover your coughs and sneezes or cough into your sleeve.
• Make healthy living a priority: get enough sleep, exercise regularly, keep a healthy weight, and keep a balanced and healthy diet.
• Quit habits that harm your respiratory and immune health. This includes overindulging in alcohol, using tobacco/nicotine products, taking drugs that are not prescribed for you.
Vaccination is particularly important for people at high risk for serious flu complications. This includes older adults, children under the age of two, people with chronic health conditions like diabetes, cancer, or heart conditions, and pregnant women.
Petition Approved to Expand CSI Taxing District
The Idaho State Board of Education has approved a petition put forth by citizens of Elmore County to expand the College of Southern Idaho’s (CSI) taxing district to include Elmore County.
With the Board’s approval, the petition will be forwarded to the Elmore County Commissioners to call a special election in Elmore County for the purpose of voting on the question of joining the CSI taxing district. A simple majority of votes would be needed for approval. CSI’s taxing district currently encompasses Twin Falls and Jerome Counties.
If approved, Elmore County property owners would contribute just over $2 million annually to the CSI taxing district. On November 14th, CSI’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously to endorse the petition.
Dyslexia Handbook Approved
The State Board also approved the Idaho Dyslexia Handbook for use in Idaho public schools. The handbook, created by a workgroup of educators, dyslexia experts and parents of dyslexic students, will help educators identify characteristics of dyslexia in young students and provide them proper educational supports.
“The workgroup that put this together was outstanding,” Board Member Dr. Linda Clark said. “We worked very hard to make sure we had the right specialists, we had representatives of Coding Dyslexia Idaho and our universities involved. It really was a stellar group and I think this will be an excellent resource.”
The Board will work with the State Department of Education to distribute copies of the handbook to public schools.
In another action, the Board gave final approval to a policy change that will assist and guide Idaho’s higher education institutions in the development of microcredentials and specialized certificates that students can earn outside of traditional career technical certificates. These new credentials and certificates are designed to create more career pathways for students and to expand workforce training opportunities.

Marshmello is Sweet!
Marshmello is one of the best DJ's in the world. He is so famous there's even Halloween costumes of him. I even dressed as him for Halloween. Imagine being so famous like him. People say his real name is Cristopher Comstock, but no one is really sure; it's still a mystery. One of his biggest hits is Happier. Can't recall it? The first few lines are: Lately, I've been, I've been thinking I want you to be happier, I want you to be happier
When the morning comes When we see what we've become Almost everybody knows that song. He has lots of songs; no one could remember how many there are!

Marshmello is 30 years old. He started DJing in 2015. For my counts, I think he started when he was fifteen years old. He is a professional DJ with 7 years of experience. He gets $200,000 for each concert. He also owns a rat that is worth $10,000. His car is a Lamborghini Aventor that is customized.

He is the first DJ to have a concert in Fortnite. In his biggest concert 73,866 people attended. Also, his helmet costs $55,000 because it is 3D printed. He also owns 44 million dollars. He is so rich. Being famous like Marshmello could be fun because it comes with a lot of money. However, he probably gets crushed by so many people wanting pictures and autographs. Someday I would like to be famous too, but with lots of bodyguards.

obituary
Richard Graves
Richard "Dick" Graves, 83, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, December 21, 2022 after being diagnosed with ALS in June 2022. He was surrounded by Fran, his wife of 62 years, and his children - Greg, Lori and Lisa. Dick was grateful to spend his last days at home and is no longer in pain.
Dick was a lifelong resident of Gooding, Idaho, born August 3, 1939 as the youngest child of Roy and June Graves. His family also included sisters - Clareen (Reed) and Mary Lou (Ruby).
Dick was active in the Future Farmers of America and was the first state FFA Officer from his area. He graduated from Gooding High School in 1957 and went on to attend and play football at the University of Idaho ("Go Vandals!") before returning home to Gooding to run the family farm and raise cattle.
In the early 1970s, Dick began his 30+ year career as a banker with Production Credit Association where he advised and connected local farmers and ranchers with funds needed to run their operations and navigate challenges of the industry. He worked as a loan officer and agricultural consultant for Idaho First National Bank, West One Bank, US Bank and Western Bank before retiring from D. L. Evans Bank in 2010. Dick witnessed the family farming and ranching way of life become big business during his lifetime and said that "farmers and ranchers are the best stewards of the land." He maintained a real estate license for almost 60 years and represented ranchers and dairymen across Idaho until his death.

Dick was inducted into the Southern Idaho Livestock Hall of Fame in 2003 for his lifetime achievements and outstanding contributions to the field of agriculture. One Idaho Senator wrote of Dick's contributions, "You have utilized your education and experience as a lender and financial manager to support farmers and ranchers, advising them on ways to maximize the profitability and financial security of their business. These efforts, in turn, serve to strengthen the industry as a whole."
Dick served on the Gooding School Board, was a member of the Idaho Agriculture Bankers Committee, the Southern Idaho Livestock Hall of Fame Director and a member of the Catholic Church Council and Church Financial Council, as well as other various community organizations. He enjoyed planning reunions with classmates and golfing with friends at the Gooding Country Club. Lots of golf.
Dick is survived by wife - Fran; sister - Mary Lou (Ken) Ruby; his children - Greg (Laura) Graves, Lori (Chris Jones) Graves and Lisa (Mike) Henslee; as well as grandchildren - Cali (K.C.) Weinmeister, Cody Henslee, Jarrod (Cassie) Graves and Kelsey (Chris) Elmes; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law – Clareen and Jim Reed.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Gooding. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
Friends may visit the family from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at Demaray Funeral Service – Gooding Chapel at 737 Main Street in Gooding. A Rosary Service will follow at 7:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, 1515 California Street, Gooding, ID 83330; or the Gooding Country Club Roof Repair Fund at 1951 Highway 26, Gooding, ID 83330.
The family would also like to express their gratitude to Heritage Hospice, including Dick's loving caregivers Anahi, Lisa and Amanda.
