For Unto Us A Child Is Given

This Saturday, we will be celebrating the birth of a child born over 2000 years ago. The birth of a child is a wondrous thing, but what makes this particular child special? Is it because He grew up to be a great teacher? Or that He was a good man? Maybe it is because He claimed to be the one and only way for us to have a relationship with God, the creator of the universe.

All throughout history, there have been those who have claimed to have the answer to that age old question, "What is the meaning of life?" Religious leaders have come and gone leaving their followers disillusioned, but none have impacted the world like Jesus Christ. Why? Jesus Christ is unique in that His life (birth, death and resurrection) was foretold hundreds of years before He arrived on earth. In fact, all of those prophecies were in print 300 years before His birth in a Greek translation of the Old Testament called the Septuagint.

Some of those prophecies include: the prophet Micah stated that the Messiah (the Hebrew word for Christ) would be born in Bethlehem. It is not particularly remarkable that someone would be born in Bethlehem, but for that person to also be part of the family of King David is note worthy.

The prophet Isaiah wrote that the Messiah would be born of a virgin. Psalms 72 states that Jesus would be worshipped by shepherds from the desert and that foreign kings would present gifts to Him. Jeremiah wrote that Jesus would go to Egypt to escape a King (Herod) who would kill every male child under the age of two in the area of Bethlehem.

In all, there are more than 300 prophecies about Jesus in the Old Testament, and it is these prophecies that are the basis for Chris-

tian beliefs.

Why? Because of the shear impossibility that one man could fulfill all of them.

Imagine for a moment that someone wrote you a card or a letter when you graduated from high school saying you would have a child who would

grow up to be president. You might say that is possible. But what if that letter also said your child would born in a particular town, with only one leg, from a mother with no uterus, and a bunch of rich guys from Japan would bring you gifts to help you escape to Mexico to avoid corrupt politicians. What are the chances any of that would come true?

Over the years, many mathematicians have calculated the probability of Jesus Christ fulfilling Bible prophecy. One study estimates the chance of just eight of these prophecies coming true would be one in 1017. How big is that number? 1017 silver dollars would cover the entire State of Texas two feet deep. How easy would it be to find just one special silver dollar in all of that.

Believe what you will about Jesus Christ, but know this...

His birth was anything but ordinary.

Soldier Mountain Open for Fun

Snow storms brought more than moisture to the region. Last weekend, the Soldier Mountain Ski Resort opened it's slopes to skiers. Soldier Mountain also announced that they will be open for skiing and snowboarding the remainder of the holidays through January 2nd except for Christmas Day, December 25.

Operating Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

After the holidays, Soldier Mountain will resume its regular operations schedule and be open Thursdays through Sundays weekly through the ski and snowboard season.

Both chairlifts and the magic carpet are operating and the terrain park is open. The kitchen and bar and rental shop in the lodge are open, too. Plus, the resort's backcountry snowcat skiing operations is accepting bookings seven days a week, and Soldier Mountain is available for private mountain bookings Monday-Wednesday on non-operational days of the open season.

Currently, Soldier Mountain has a base of 18 to 22 inches of snow and received 3 inches of snow this last weekend with more coming this week.

ABOUT SOLDIER MOUNTAIN Established in 1947, Soldier Mountain is a family friendly mountain resort located near Fairfield, Idaho, at 1043 N. Soldier Creek Rd. in the Soldier Mountains of the Sawtooth National Forest. It is about two hours from Boise, 80 minutes from Sun Valley, and 90 minutes from Twin Falls.

The resort offers five mountain biking trails, a skills park, and a nine-hole disc golf course during the summer. In the winter it offers skiing and snowboarding on 35 named trails and a terrain park on the frontside and 2,000 acres of snowcat-accessible backcountry. Soldier Mountain has two chairlifts reaching an altitude of up to 7,177 ft. and a magic carpet. Its lodge restaurant serves homemade fare while The Fox Den Pub provides guests with a cozy spot to hang out after a great day on the mountain.

Camping spots are available at the end of the resort's parking lot at Pioneer Campground and along the road beyond, and motel lodging and vacation rentals are available in Fairfield about 10 miles away.

Then, while I was in line waiting to order, a small boy of around 4-5 ran in front of me.

His mother said to him, "What do you say?"

The little boy replied, "Sorry sir, excuse me."

That was admirable. In this small moment the parents were making the boy responsible for himself with manners - traits we used to see years ago.

When my turn to order came about, I ordered the chicken strip dinner meal, which came with fries, a drink, a sundae, and dipping sauce. The gal asked me what I wanted for sauce. I told her "gravy" which I was going to use on my fries instead of the chicken, and could I get ketchup to go on my chicken. She gave me what I wanted and asked if I wanted my sundae now or wait until later. I told her I would eat it while I waited for the rest. Eating desert first reminds me of my teen days when I started eating desert first - you could always warm up a cooked meal but warming up coconut or banana cream pie was out of the question.

I was dining in which reminded me of a few years ago when we weren't dealing with Covid and could eat inside instead of being locked out and barred from any kind of entry. The patrons weren't dressed in pajamas.

The hostess even asked me if I wanted a refill - a far cry from the service last year.

Everything was good except when I looked at the ketchup pack ingredients it said high fructose corn syrup. The ketchup pack took me back years and years ago when I worked for an older couple. The Mrs. made homemade ketchup. It was the best! I told her how good it was, and when I would come to put up their hay, she would take from her home canned reserve a jar of ketchup for me. There was nothing artificial and pretentious about the ketchup. It spoke for itself.

Friday morning, following Thursday last, I stopped to get some fuel in New Plymouth, Idaho. Inside there was a pile of pancakes and all the fixings for their staff. I asked, "Who brought you guys breakfast?"

A young employee answered, "The school had a doings and they brought us over pancakes." Then I asked, "Do you know what that means?" He said, "No." I told him, "That is kindness whereas someone is paying it forward and you need to do it somewhere else." He was impressed by the idea.

To top off the day, Friday evening I went to the theater in Emmett, Idaho. "Clifford the Big Red Dog" was playing. In the beginning the dog was very small but would grow with true love. The loved dog grew to be very huge and out of proportion.

Excuse my manners! This Christmas accept nothing artificial, love big with full spirit, and pay blessing forward.

Sea Lions: Life by a Whisker

Not so long ago California Sea Lions were endangered, but today they are thriving thanks to the intervention of caretaking humans. Come on a journey, at the Faulkner Planetarium, from Australia to California and back again as we look for ways to help save Otto and her family of endangered Australian Sea Lions.

Opening Tuesday, December 28, Sea Lions: Life by a Whisker tells the compelling tale of the Australian Sea Lions’ fight for survival.

Planetarium Manager Rick Greenawald notes, “The Sea Lions trailer has been generating quite the buzz in the planetarium since early summer. Now, the wait is over. Guests of all ages can take delight in baby sea lion Otto, but also learn of the plight of her species. The film is a story of hope; hope that the future of the Australian Sea Lion can be as bright as that of the California Sea Lion.”

Sea Lions debuts with showings at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 7 p.m.

Tuesday, the week of December 28 - 31. January’s showings are scheduled at 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays and 2:30 and 7 p.m. Saturdays.

Admission prices to the planetarium are $6 adults (18 to 59), $5 seniors (60+), $4 children (2 to 17) and CSI students with a valid student ID. Children under the age of two are admitted free of charge.

Located in the Herrett Center for Arts and Science on the College of Southern Idaho campus in Twin Falls, ID, the Faulkner Planetarium is the state’s largest planetarium. Public shows are offered on Tuesday and Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons, plus evenings throughout the academic year. Expanded show schedules are offered during the holiday season and summer.

With Snow on the Roads, Remember Plow Safety

With snow in the forecast for several regions in the state, the Idaho Transportation Department would like to remind drivers how to travel with plows on the road.

In just the last two weeks, there have been four incidents of drivers striking plows and two incidents of drivers forcing them off the road. This compares to eight plow strikes recorded last year. Most of the collisions have occurred after other drivers tried passing plows on the right.

Drivers should be aware that most ITD trucks have two plows: one on the front, and one that extends from the right side known as a wing plow. Lights alert drivers to the presence of wing plows, but during storms those lights and the wing plows can be obscured by plumes of snow.

So far this winter, plows have been struck in nearly every region of the state: On December 9, a plow was hit on Interstate 90 near the Rose Lake exit when a driver tried to pass on the right.

On December 14, a plow on U.S. Highway 95 near Moscow was forced off the road to avoid hitting a vehicle that had lost control and was in the opposing lane.

On December 16, a plow was hit on U.S. Highway 20 near Ashton and on Interstate 84 near Twin Falls. Both incidents involved drivers trying to pass on the right. That same night a plow on US-95 near Winchester was forced off the road to avoid hitting a vehicle that had lost control and was in the opposing lane.

The latest plow strike occurred this morning on I-90 near Osburn. Another vehicle attempted to pass the plow on the right, collided with the wing and forced the plow off the road. The driver then fled the scene. The Idaho State Police are investigating the incident.

To date no one has been injured. However, plows must be checked for any damage before being put back into service, which stretches resources thin with a direct impact to driving conditions.

“This time of year drivers need to take their time and never pass a plow on the right,” said Jerry Wilson, the operations engineer for North Idaho. “Let’s all get home safely.”

Lonnie LeaVell

May 12, 1937 ––– December 16, 2021

Lonnie was born May 12, 1937 in his Grandfather’s lava rock house at Soldier, Idaho to Orie and Cletis LeaVell. He was a 4th generation Idahoan whose grandparents pioneered the Camas Prairie, Soldier and Fairfield area and was married to Charmianne LeaVell. Lonnie “flew away” in the very early morning hours December 13, 2021 at his home in Gooding, Idaho.

Lonnie was schooled in a one room County Summer School House 1st through 7th grades, 8th Grade at Gooding Jr. High, 9th grade as a freshman in Wendell, Idahio and his Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years at Gooding High School.

Attending high school in Fairfield and Wendell and as a Junior in Gooding he represented Gooding High School at the first Idaho State Rodeo at Salmon, Idaho, winning the Calf Roping and 2nd in Bare Back. Being a first place winner, he was sponsored to attend the National High School Finals in Halletsville, TX where he made the finals in the Bare Back riding event. He took 1st place in Calf Roping and 2nd in Bareback as well as All Around Cowboy.

Lonnie got his High School Diploma two weeks early to enlist in the US Navy and attended boot camp for 3 months and went on to Personnelman School in Bainbridge, Maryland. He served 3 years with the Navy and was transferred to the West Coast aboard the US Knudsen APD 101 Destroyer ship. While aboard ship, they went to Hawaii and then the Marshal Islands including Enewetak Atoll Islands as an observer ship for a number of atomic bomb tests including the Hydrogen Bomb test. His ship was anchored approximately 15 miles out and the enlisted personnel, including himself, sat on the opposite side of the explosion with their backs against the wall. They knew to cover their faces and to close their eyes and tuck them into the crooks of their arms/elbows upon explosion. Lonnie said “ It was like someone shined a flash light into their eyes, the light from the explosion was so strong. After a few minutes they were allowed to observe the upward mushroom, which had every color imaginable, twisting and turning while going upward.

His last year in the service was spent in Pensacola, Florida and in the same hanger as the famed “Blue Angels” acrobatic flying group. His offices had a front row seat for their practices. He was honorably discharged as a Petty Officer 2nd Class.

Lonnie returned home to work at the family owned Gooding Livestock Auction and at the age of 23, made the decision to move to Vale, Oregon to manage the family owned Vale Auction for 6 years rather than continuing a career in rodeo moving the auction from 10th place to the 3rd largest livestock auction in the state! During that time they supported and furnished stock to the local 4H and rodeos at no cost.

When the auction sold (now Producers Livestock Marketing) Lonnie took a position as a Farm and Ranch Loan Correspondent representing Connecticut General Life Insurance Co., throughout the NW specializing in ranch loans. Following a divorce, he relocated to Boise working as a Ranch Loan Fieldman and Appraiser and with further college seminars and short course education joined the Idaho Farm and Ranch Rural Appraisers representing Tippett Land and Mortgage, the loan correspondent of Connecticut General Life Insurance Co., now known as CIGNA in the North Western States and obtained his Real Estate Broker’s License. In 1967 when Tippett Land and Mortgage Co. acquired the Northwestern states loan portfolio moving the home office from Boise to Kennewick, WA where farm land was being developed in vast numbers, he was advanced to VP and Manager of the Idaho office. Later, in the late 1980’s when CIGNA decided to sell their farm and ranch portfolio, Lonnie with his wife Charmy returned to Gooding to partner with

his father in LeaVell Cattle. They purchased 3 additional ranches and ran approximately 15,000 yearlings along with livestock buying 30-40 million dollars annually.

Prior to returning to Gooding, Lonnie and Charmy enjoyed life in the pine tree mountains with wild turkeys, bear, deer, elk, hummingbirds and multiple other species of birds and animals that visited their log home at Robie Creek where Lonnie built several log homes for sale on property they owned there. He returned home with Charmy to Gooding in 1988 to go into partnership with the LeaVell Cattle company where they had a backgrounding operation for Rhea Cattle Company out of Nebraska at the LeaVell Feed Yard in Gooding and ran as many as 3,000 head of cattle at their Magic Reservoir Ranch and on BLM leased ground. He has been a supporter of rodeo youth & 4 H purchasing belt buckles, providing calves to rope, and donating to the 4 H. Lonnie and his wife were awarded the 2020 Conservation recognition award.

After Lonnie’s father, Orie passed and the cattle market began a sharp decline, he decided to develop the land he and his wife owned to subdivide it and named it the Wood River Estates. Lonnie really began his tree planting when he purchased 300 acres at Robie Creek above Lucky Peak Nursery in Boise County. His first experience purchasing hundreds of bare-root pine trees was from the Lucky Peak Forest Service. At that same time, very creatively, Lonnie planted a variety of grasses and wildflower seed using a one-ton bale shredder to blow it on the mountain sides for soil erosion. Over the years, Lonnie planted thousands of trees and plant life at Robie Creek , their Magic Ranch at Magic Reservoir and in Gooding purchasing approximately 1000 bare root trees a year for windbreaks, shelterbelts and snow fences and grew a forest on his development ground in Gooding. The ground was transformed from lava rock and sagebrush to forest like ground sheltering wildlife such as Quail, 4 generations of deer, and many species of birds as well as creating a sanctuary for them.

In 2009, Lonnie was inducted into what was known as the “Cowboy Reunion and Hall of Fame”. After the death in 2010 of the “organizer” Al Gorrell, he recognized the need to formally organize what is now called the Idaho Rodeo Hall of Fame, Inc. With only a suitcase of newspapers, under his leadership and the combined effort of his wife Charmy, in March, 2013 a Vision and Mission Statement was adopted, an Amendment of Certificate of Assumed Business Name was filed with the Secretary of the State of Idaho to acquire the assumed business name of the Idaho Rodeo Hall of Fame. On May 6, of 2013, The Idaho Rodeo Hall of Fame (IRHF) was formed as a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization by Lonnie with his wife Charmy LeaVell as the incorporators to become what is known today as the “Idaho Rodeo Hall of Fame” for the purpose of honoring and preserving for future generations the legacy of rodeo and the individuals who participate in rodeo, their history, heritage, western traditions, and western way of life. He was inducted into the Idaho Rodeo Hall of Fame in October of 2021.

A Board of Directors was formed naming Lonnie as President and his wife as Secretary/Treasurer and On May 14, 2013 a letter of determination was received from the IRS as the effective date for exemption from Federal Income Tax with Public Charity Status and Contribution Deductibility and the ultimate goal and vision was to have a building to preserve and display historical memorabilia and photos.

Soon after, the first newsletter was mailed out in 2014, the process of organizing and the time consuming work of scanning photos and setting up a filing system was put in place, the first recorded interviews of Inductees were held and in 2014 Lonnie launched a” Decorate a Steer Fundraiser” displaying 70 wooden life size

In 2015, under his leadership, the first draft of the IRHF, Inc.’s history and timeline the IRHF’s official logo was presented to the IRHF Board of Directors, a letterhead was designed for the board members to review and protocols were put in place.

In 2016 Lonnie and his wife Charmy received the prestigious National Historic Preservation Award from the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) in recognition of their work with both the Idaho Rodeo Hall of Fame and the restoration of the historic Schubert Theatre in Gooding.

The nomination for the LeaVells was supported by articles, photographs, and letters of recommendation from Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter and Sandra Callen, chairperson of the chapter’s Historic Preservation Committee. The national award is designed to recognize worthy individuals and groups for outstanding achievements in all areas of historic preservation. A web page was created for us by Teddy Stoecklein and his vision was realized with the first IRHF Museum opening at the Jerome Historical Society’s Farm and Ranch I-Farm through the efforts of IRHF Director Charles Howell.

A publicity release was sent to the Twin Falls, ID Times News in 2017 and the IRHF Inductions received a full front and middle page coverage, Governor Otter declares July 29, 2017 as Idaho Rodeo Hall of Fame Day and the first IRHF Give Cancer the Boot Tough Enough to Wear Pink event was held at their annual reunion and meet and greet.

By 2018, under the leadership of Lonnie, the Idaho Rodeo Hall of Fame grew into a Statewide and beyond organization from approximately 50 to 75 people attending to over 300+ individuals in attendance , many times World Champions were being inducted like Dean Oliver and Dee Pickett, a dance was held in conjunction with inductions and oral histories were being recorded to preserve the legacies of the Inductees.

Lonnie also saw a need to restore the historic Schubert Theater in Gooding and when then Mayor Morton’s wife Donna approached Charmy Lonnie bought the theater for her as a birthday gift. They applied for nonprofit status and in November of 2014, they received their 501 (c)(3) status as a charitable organization with contribution deductibility. The theater was donated to the nonprofit Gooding Restoration for Entertainment Arts and theater, Inc. (aka GREAT, Inc.) He was preceded in death by his Father Orie Leavell, his Mother Cletis LeaVell Etter, his Step-Father Jake Etter, his Brother, Benjamin LeaVell, his Grandson Josh Sorenson, and his Nieces Christy Stratton, Tiffany Stratton, and Denise Byce.

Lonnie leaves his wife, Charmianne LeaVell, his Sister Deloris Clark Gormley (Dave Gormley) his two daughters Loah Lynn McCoy (Jay Mulesky), and Lisa Sorenson, Stepsons Bruce LeaVell, and Richard Welch, Six Grandchildren, Five Great Grandchildren Lonnie suggested donations to GREAT, Inc. to restore the theater in lieu of flowers be sent to: P.O. Kody Tieler Dedicke

Kody Tieler Dedicke, 17, a resident of Gooding, was taken from us far too soon on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 in Gooding.

Kody was born on April 19, 2004 in Jerome, Idaho, the son of Amanda Dedicke.

He was raised in Jerome, Wendell and Gooding where he attended schools. Kody was currently attending the Alternative School in Gooding, working towards his graduation. He was also working as a prep cook at Stampede Burger in Gooding.

Kody loved doing woodwork, from simple whittling projects to making a table for his father and shelf for his grandmother. He enjoyed playing football and hiking.

He is survived by: his mother – Amanda Meza of Jerome; his father – Jess McCoy of Gooding; his grandmother – Joyce Childers of Wendell; his grandfather – Robert Childers of Elko, Nevada; three sisters – Diana Dedicke of Jerome, Maria (Daniel Villagrana) Tapia of Gooding and Naomi (Diego De Leon) Tapia of Gooding; his nieces – Kaylie and Isabell Villagrana, Angelina Belan Tapia and Jocelyn Roman; and his nephews – Lorenzo Villagrana Tapia and Emillo Villagrana.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, December 21, at Demaray Funeral Service – Gooding Chapel. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 at 2:00 p.m.

Use Caution This Winter When Using Boats

Temperatures (and snow) are falling across much of the state. With the onset of cold air and water temperatures, anglers and waterfowl hunters are encouraged to take precautions and practice boating safety this winter.

Nearly every year, there is a boating accident in Idaho involving duck hunters or winter anglers.

With water temperatures just above freezing, these accidents can tragically result in a fatality.

In the past 10 years nearly 67 percent of the fatal boating accidents in Idaho were the result of victims falling into the water from small boats.

The most common mistake waterfowl hunters make while operating a boat is overloading the vessel. All watercraft under 20 feet in length constructed after Nov. 1, 1972 have a capacity plate permanently affixed in a location clearly visible to the operator while the boat is underway. The plate lists the maximum horsepower, maximum number of persons and maximum weight capacity including all people, dogs and gear. By the time you strap on an outboard motor and add some hunters, dogs and hunting gear, it’s easy to exceed the weight capacity without knowing it.

Be sure to follow all of Idaho’s boating laws and practice safety measures the next time you’re out on the water.
