25 Years Ski Idaho License Plates
This weekend's dump of snow came just in time to open most Idaho ski resorts, including Soldier Mountain (call ahead for holiday hours). For those who desire to show off their love of skiing all year long, Ski Idaho has announced its license plate program is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

The Ski Idaho license plate debuted in 1999, and Silver Mountain Resort general manager and Idaho Ski Areas Association board president Jeff Colburn said it is an important revenue stream for the nonprofit, which represents 19 alpine ski areas.
"These funds allow Ski Idaho to do important work," he said. "Activities like marketing our fantastic destinations to potential visitors and offering our acclaimed passport program that allows 5th and 6th graders to ski or snowboard 17 Idaho mountains for a one-time fee of 29 bucks."
According to the Idaho Transportation Dept., more than 8,500 Idahoans proudly display their love of skiing on their vehicle by purchasing a Ski Idaho license plate.
Ski Idaho publicist Tony Harrison said Idaho may have the distinction of being the first U.S. state to issue an automobile license plate featuring a skier.
"Based on my research, Idaho appears to have the oldest ski-themed license plate, which dates back to 1947 and features the silhouette of a skier in mid-jump," he said.
Harrison said the Idaho Department of Motor Vehicles offers customizable souvenir plates that benefit Ski Idaho, too. He said both types of plates are customizable with a maximum of six characters including spaces, cannot contain punctuation, and must be tasteful in any language.

Ski Idaho vehicle license plates have a $35 program fee for the first year with a $25 renewal fee each year thereafter in addition to personalization and vehicle registration fees.
Souvenir plates and the Idaho Peak Season Passports make great holiday stocking stuffers. Visit itd.idaho. gov/itddmv to order Ski-Idaho-themed personalized vehicle and souvenir plates, and visit skiidaho.us/passports to learn more about Idaho Peak Season Passports.

Wintertime Bird Feeding Tips
We all know that neighbor that takes bird feeding to Olympic games-level extremes. With tree limbs sagging under the weight of countless feeders and a back lawn that looks like it was ripped straight from Augusta Country Club, they stand out on their back porch with arms outstretched as a myriad of birds swoop in to feed directly from their palms.

That may be a bit of an exaggeration, but you don’t need to be Snow White to attract backyard birds. Many species — including finches, chickadees, jays, nuthatches, sparrows, doves and more — may very well settle on your backyard bed and breakfast with a proper bird-feeding setup this winter.
Usually, feeding wild animals is not a smart move. Feeding birds, however, is a special case, since they don’t often become dependent on feeders alone, and instead use feeders to supplement their daily natural diet. Winter feeding also gives a little assistance to our feathered friends during the harsh, colder months.
Here are a few ways to spice up your bird-feeding buffet and enjoy an enchanting opportunity to observe wildlife right in your own backyard.
Before you go hanging your feeder (or feeders) all across your backyard, you’ll need some seed. Depending on the types of birds you’re hoping to attract, there are many feed and feeder options available. For instance, hanging-style feeders can attract songbirds, such as house finches, chickadee, jays, nuthatches, and others. Thistle feeders can bring goldfinches, siskins, and house finches, and suet can attract woodpeckers, chickadees, and nuthatches.
There are many kinds of birdseed out there on the market. Be sure to source your birdseed from reputable sources to avoid dust, insects, weed seeds, or any other impurities from making their way into your feeder. Black-oil sunflower seed is a favorite of many species. Millet and cracked corn are favorites for many ground-feeding birds. Finches and siskins love nyjer thistle. To avoid freeloaders like squirrels...

Beware of Brushing Scam!
A recent scam has been showing up in many states. Be aware before you are victimized.
A "brushing" scam is when someone receives an unexpected gift or item not ordered in the mail from a place like Amazon or other company. Examples of gifts include, rings, bracelets, necklaces, Bluetooth speaker, etc. The gift will have the recipient’s address, but not include the sender's information or be from a known retailer. When the recipient opens the package to see what it is and possibly who sent it, there is a QR code to scan to find out who sent the gift.
Once the code is scanned, all the information from that phone will be sent to scammers. They receive all access to the phone. All personal and financial information is accessible to the scammers and often the victim's bank accounts are drained.
The gift can be kept or thrown away, but the QR code should NOT be scanned for any reason. QR code scams are nothing new. These scams show up in all places, including parking meters. Inform your family members about the scam and avoid scanning any unknown QR codes included in the package.

Cup of Tee by Tee Hurd
This year, instead of attending the Fairfield Tree Lighting celebration, I chose to be a partisipant in the lighted tractor parade in New Plymough, Idaho. The Kiwanis Club sponsored the parade whereas the tractors were decorated with lights and paraded with the finale being the lighting of the town's Christmas Tree.
I had to get three tractors to New Plymough to be in the parade. The fourth to go was going to be a John Deere 70 I had just bought, but wet spray paint didn't allow the tractor to go.
My 1927 Fordson tractor was in Boise. It didn't get to attend the Veteran's Day parade. A John Deere 60 was Nampa from our last tractor pull hoping it would be parading in Nampa. Yet another John Deere 60 had to come from Emmett.
On the night before the parade, the three tractors were gathered to New Plymouth in heavy fog... a mile and a half from the parade start. The night heavy fog left the tractors covered with frozen fog, a nice decoration in nature's own way.
One of my co-workers was going to drive one of the John Deere 60s while I was driving the other one pulling the Fordson Iron Wheeled tractor. Around noon I drove the two John Deeres and the pulled the Fordson to the parade's starting point in the brisk fog.
Prior to moving the tractors I had looked everywhere for battery operated rope lights to put on the tractors wheels. Every Walmart in the area was sold out (quite a few Walmarts in the area). Two fifteen foot white lighted ropes came available but were substituted for one red and one blue. With the shortest of time, I purchased a bunch of little light strands requiring electrical power. No worries, I have my generator.
My co-worker decorated the John Deere he was driving and I started to decorate the Fordson. Duct
tape is a cure-all when sticking things together but not with wet, fog covered tractors. I ended up getting tie wires to hold the lights on.
Of course, to get the real effect of the lights to showcase the tractor was a challenge. I don't care to wrap presents and soon figured I didn't care to wrap tractors in lights. It's not like going around and around with light for a tree.
The chairperson graciously moved my tractors into positions two and three, so I could help the Senior Citizens Center with a small fundraiser, chili and potatoes after the parade.
Time was running out on my slow decorating. While I was dealing with single strands of lights, tractors were pulling into the starting lot with enough lights to light an airport runway. They were like generators of power compared to me lighting a match. It was time to go and my 60 didn't get decorated. Oh well... the show must go on. I went to start my generator and... it wouldn't start. VERY IRRITATING!!! Finally, the generator started. I was barely visible with all the other lighted tractors. I went to start my co-worker's tractor and... it wouldn't start.
Oh my goodness, Charlie Brown! My new light/ ignition switch was playing it's own game. As the parade started with some firetrucks, the tractor started just in the nick of time.
We were off in the darkness, lighting up the streets as we drove. With all the frustration of getting parade bound, I was rewarded with all the people standing in the 20o foggy weather to see the Holiday lighted tractors.
Seeing smiling faces makes all the efforts not wasted.
This is my light “Cup of Tee.”

Senator Risch Recognizes Small Business Local Gems
U.S. Senator Jim Risch, member and former chairman of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, announced the selection of seven Idaho small businesses as Local Gems. This recognition is part of the fifth annual Support Local Gems All Season Long initiative, a public awareness campaign Senator Risch created to encourage Idahoans to support the small businesses that make Idaho special. These small businesses will be recognized in the Congressional Record of the U.S. Senate.

"Small businesses are the heart of Idaho. I'm proud to recognize Clark's Diamond Jewelry, Freedom Tires, Anderson Reserve, MidStar Firearms, Denny's Wrecker Service, iSource, and Bullets 'N Brew in Hagerman for their dedication to their communities. These local gems exemplify Idaho's entrepreneurial spirit, and I look forward to their continued growth and success," said Risch.
Bullets 'N Brew: Founded in 2017 by Gary Mode, Bullets 'N Brew is a uniquely Idaho venture that combines a full-service coffee shop with a one-stop destination for firearms and ammunition. Located in Hagerman, Bullets 'N Brew is a favorite stop for local sportsmen and visitors alike. Support Local Gems All Season Long is a holiday revival of the statewide Support Local Gems.
...Wintertime Bird Feeding continued
rats, and mice ruining your supply, store birdseed in tight, waterproof containers. This will also help prevent mold.
Birds don’t have the same pleasures that we do when it comes to drive-thru windows. Placing a bird feeder too close to hazards can end up doing more harm than good. Avoid placing feeders near windows or doors, and keep placement height and accessibility in mind. Predators such as hawks or free-ranging house cats can quickly become uninvited backyard dinner guests when feeders are put out in the open or near low-hanging ledges.
A hearty meal wouldn’t be complete without a drink. Birds utilize birdbaths throughout the year not only to stay clean but to keep themselves hydrated–a luxury we humans should not try in our baths at home.
If possible, include a birdbath in your backyard bed and breakfast. There are several types on the market, but you can’t go wrong with a simple clay potting saucer.
This time of year, however, it might be a little troublesome keeping that bath ice-free. There are a couple solutions, including special birdbath heaters, to help keep their baths from freezing over. And no, they don’t come with little mini Whirlpool jets and colored LED lights.
A bird’s bath or feeder only does its job when it’s clean. Imagine inviting over the whole culde-sac for a hot tub party and leaving the chlorine float in the garage. It’s very important that backyard bird enthusiasts keep their feeders and birdbaths tidy and disinfect at least once a month to prevent the spreading of diseases.

More Wintertime Bird Feeding
Along those lines, aim for using perch-style feeders rather than open, saucer-style feeders. Because of their openness and contamination from bird feces, open feeders and baths can become a breeding ground for disease.
To clean your feeders, make a household bleach solution using one part household bleach mixed with nine parts lukewarm water. Make enough solution to immerse an empty, cleaned feeder completely for two to three minutes, then air dry.
Remember that feeding wildlife (other than birds) is not recommended. Birds are unique in that they don’t solely rely or become hooked on free, backyard birdseed. The same cannot be said about other wildlife. If food set out for birds is being eaten by other wildlife, move the feeder to a safe location or discontinue feeding.
Feeding birds is a gratifying experience that can be enjoyed by anyone. So pull out the binoculars and the bird-watching guide and enjoy this simple pastime all year round right from the comfort of your backyard.
