Volunteers Improve County Office

Earlier this year, three pieces of a large, curved desk were brought into the Camas County Commissioner room and reassembled to replace the white plastic table the commissioners had been using to conduct business. The desk, created by Mike McFadyen, not only gave the commissioner room a more professional look, it also provided a place for each commissioner (and staff) to store and use computers. With the much needed improvement, it was noted by another member of the public that something was Commissioners: Travis missing, something that Kramer, Galen Colter every government office and Marshall Ralph. needs to be complete. Leigh Weidman then started the process of raising funds to provide a set of flags - one U.S. Flag and one Idaho Flag - for the commissioner room. After connecting with the American Legion, an anonymous donation was given to purchase the flags, and on Legion Members delivering Monday of this week - December 10th - three members flags: Dwight Butlin, Steve of American Legion, Elmer Miller Post #19 presented the Smith, and Ron Chapman. flags to the Camas County Commissioners. This coming spring, the effort to improve the look of the commissioner room will continue with the installation of a large work of art by a local artist on the wall behind the commissioners. Government entities can do a lot of things for their communities, but when community volunteers start giving back - even with small things - it gives birth to a real pride in who we are.

All you need is an internet connection through a web browser and an email address. Once you sign up for your free account and start using this service, you’ll wonder how you ever got along without it! It’s simple to use. Every month a reminder email will be sent to you letting you know when your bill is online. Then, just log into your account at xpressbillpay.com and view your bill. You’ll also be able to see one years’ history of your account online, and compare your current bill to a previous bill. Musher Defeat Pirates 57-50

In boys basketball, the Camas County Mushers traveled to Hagerman on Tuesday, December 4th where the Mushers defeated the Hagerman Pirates 57-50. That same evening, the Lighthouse Christian Lions defeated the Wendell Trojans 64-51. On Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., the Shoshone Indians stood off against the Valley Vikings in Shoshone, losing 44-68. On Thursday, an away game in American Falls revealed defeat for the Gooding Senators, losing 40-57 to the Beavers. Friday’s games began in Murtaugh with the Wendell Trojans defeated once more 33-62 by the Oakley Hornets. In Jackpot, Nevada, the Bliss Bears suffered two defeats: first to the Sun Valley Community School Cutthroats 50-36, and then to the Rimrock Raiders 37-61. At Twin Falls Christian, the Camas County Mushers were victorious again, defeating the Warriors 57-39. On Saturday, December 8th in Murtaugh, the Murtaugh Red Devils barely lost to the Wendell Trojans 46-50. At the 4:30 p.m. game in Murtaugh, the Wendell Trojans were defeated by the Rockland Bulldogs 36-52. In Mountain View the Riverstone Otters defeated the Shoshone Indians 48-39. The Richfield Tigers lost to the Horseshoe Bend Mustangs 29-60. In Dietrich, the Glenns Ferry Pilots defeated the Dietrich Blue Devils 62-60. Ending Saturday’s games was a victory from the Camas County Mushers in Mountain View, defeating the Tri-Valley Mustangs 43-40. In girls basketball, the Gooding Senators defeated the Wendell Trojans 51-24 in a home game on Monday, December 3rd. At Lighthouse Christian, the Lions lost to the Shoshone Indians 29-40. On Tuesday, the Dietrich Blue Devils defeated the Valley Vikings 50-39. In Gooding, the Senators were victorious again, defeating the Canyon Ridge Riverhawks 44-35. In Hagerman, the Pirates defeated the Camas County Mushers 62-45. In Richfield, the Tigers were defeated by the Hansen Huskies 41-25. In Wendell, the Trojans were defeated again 27-46 by the Rimrock Raiders. On Thursday in Preston, the Hagerman Pirates lost 40-44 to the Bountiful Braves. In Glenns Ferry, the Shoshone Indians defeated the Pilots 42-23. At Lighthouse Christian, the Lions were defeated 45-54 by the Dietrich Blue Devils. Friday’s games starting with a Oakley Hornets win over the Wendell Trojans in Murtaugh 40-26. In Preston, the Hagerman Pirates just barely defeated the Ririe Bulldogs 54-52. At Twin Falls Christian, the Warriors defeated the Camas County Mushers 40-31. In Gooding, the Senators had victory over the Declo Hornets 50-47. In Richfield, the Tigers lost 30-48 against the Dietrich Blue Devils. Saturday’s games began in Preston with the Hagerman Pirates defeating the Marsh Valley JV Eagles 58-40. In Dietrich, the Blue Devils won 62-42 against the Burley JV Bobcats. In Murtaugh, the Wendell Trojans lost 12-43 to the Rockland Bulldogs. At Raft River, the Raft River Trojans defeated the Richfield Tigers 46-31. Ending Saturday’s games, the Murtaugh Red Devils defeated the Wendell Trojans 55-26.

Dear Editor,

After attending the Camas schools Christmas program on Dec. 6th I have to make a couple of comments. The high school gym is not Carnegie Hall but a concert is a concert no matter what the venue and some courtesies are expected. Unless you have a medical emergency, it is bad form to leave the concert after your child’s performance. Families with older students have watched your child. How about staying put to watch theirs? Another 45 minutes watching the concert to the end will not put you any farther behind with your holiday schedule. A concert intermission is not half time at a basketball game. I understand the need for little ones to physically get rid of some pent up energy by running BUT when the lights go dark that is their clue to get back into their seats. Parents should pick up on that for the little ones who don’t get it. The noise of continual “recess” when the concert has started again is distracting for the audience, and more importantly the performers, not to mention it is just plain inconsiderate. The fact that Ms. Runyon had to mention it at all was sad and should have been unnecessary. In spite of these audience actions, or inactions, I want to thank Ms. Runyon and the performers for all the work they put into giving the community a fabulously entertaining evening. Thanks for Roxane Olson helping make our season merry and bright!

In 1950, Blaine County elected a Republican to the Idaho House of Representatives - Pete Cenarrusa. He served as a representative for 16 years, went on to be Secretary of State until 2002 to become the longest serving secretary of state in the United States and longest-serving elected public official in Idaho history - 52 years. In 1966 my dad, Edward V. Reagan, was elected County Assessor for Camas County. He was re-elected multiple times with no opposition and retired 16 years later. Although he wasn’t overtly political, he was a lifelong Democrat, and I grew up knowing people like Senator Frank Church, Governor Cecil Andrus, and other Democrat politicians. In today’s political climate, it is virtually impossible to imagine a Democrat being elected in Camas County... and a Republican in Blaine County? Dream on! And yet, in the early years of our state, there was no dominate political party. Parties exchanged the upper hand on a regular basis and Idahoans often split tickets - voted for Republicans and Democrats on the same ballot. However, in the 1960s, Idaho Democrats started losing ground when the national Democratic party shifted its focus towards “liberal” social issues and drove away Mormons and other religious groups. Timber and mining industries in Idaho went into decline and labor unions lost their political clout. The “one man, one vote” mandate turned elections into complex games of numbers and money. And the big loser in Idaho... the Democratic party. Some of us are perfectly content with a weak Democratic Party, but having hyper-political elections hurts everyone. Regardless of political affiliation, we no longer vote for people based personal knowledge of the candidates. Instead, the prevalent method of voting has become “straight line voting” - voting for one party and only one party. The solution to this problem is to reverse the changes made to our constitution, and return to having each county send a representative and/or senator to the State Legislature. Of course, this is not an easy thing to do and many of our legislators believe it can’t be done. Why?

Marcial Martinez Leija

Marcial Martinez Leija, 72, of Bliss, Idaho, passed away on Friday, November 30, 2018 at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Twin Falls, Idaho. On July 3, 1946 Marcial was born to Leopoldo and Mariana Martinez Leija in Dr. Arroyo, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. He later married the love of his life, Alicia Quintero de la Rosa, on June 22, 1968. Not long after marriage they began their family and their journey in life together. In 1970 they relocated to Bliss, Idaho where he cultivated his family roots and started farming and ranching with his family. Marcial’s passion for farming, ranching and strong work ethic was instilled to all his children and grandkids. He took great pride in supporting all his children in their 4-H and FFA projects. He enjoyed fishing, horses, BBQ-ing, and spending time with his family and friends. He is survived by his wife Alicia Leija of 50 years, nine children: Domitilo Leija of Bliss; Arnulfo Leija (Shannon) - and their children, Josh and Christian Leija of Houston, TX; Esperanza Leija of Connell, WA; Hermelinda Leija and Merardo Leija of Hagerman, ID; Magdalena (Dan Weimer) of Pocatello, ID; Mary A. Leija (Conrad) - and their son, Dustin Freeman of Twin Falls; Jesse Leija of San Diego, CA; and Fransisca Leija of Hagerman. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Raymundo, Abraham, Francisca, Guadalupe, Julia (sister-in-law), Dario, Masedonio, Juana, and his loving parents. Services were held December 7 & 8 at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church. Burial followed at the Hagerman Cemetery.

Richard “Dick” Lee Baker

Richard “Dick” Lee Baker, 70, passed away in the early morning hours of December 6, 2018, with his family by his side. His death was due to complications related to a recent car accident. He was the husband of Wanda and they shared 47 wonderful years of marriage together. Richard was born in Ontario, Oregon on December 23, 1947, to George Richard and Lela Grace Baker. He graduated from Filer High School and enlisted in the United States Army. When he was not on active duty, Richard helped others as an EMT, fire chief, custodian, and pharmaceutical courier. His most beloved job was as a long-haul truck driver where he could travel the country in his Kenworth truck. He was a member of the L.D.S. Church and was sealed for eternity with his family in the Switzerland Temple in 1974. Richard gladly answered any church callings that were asked of him. He was a craftsman in multiple skill areas and loved to spend his time building and creating things. He will be remembered for his witty sense of humor and compassionate personality. He is survived by his wife, Wanda; his children - Dan (Robin) Cecil, Candida (Greg) Tanner, and Angi (Stace) Campbell; his grandchildren - Tayler, Heather, Justin, Daniel, Mark, Sarah, Triston, Caden, and Shelby; and his two brothers and four sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents and his dog, Chancy. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 14, 2018, at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hagerman, followed by a graveside service at the Wendell Cemetery. Sherry Ann Fuqua

Sherry Ann (Tschannen) Fuqua, 55, gained her angel wings on Thursday, November 29th, 2018, at her home in Gooding after a long, hard fight with cancer. Her loving mother, Dorothy was there to welcome Sherry into the world for her first breath and held her in her arms again for Sherry’s last. Sherry was born on June 21st, 1963 in Gooding, Idaho to Dorothy and Rudolph (Jr.) Tschannen. Sherry had three older brothers - Fred Robbins, Robert (Tracie) Robbins and Jay Tschannen, all of whom Sherry adored. Sherry grew up in Gooding where she graduated from High School and made many life-long friends. Sherry married her high school sweetheart, Lloyd in 1984. They shared many happy years together raising their three children, Stefanie (Jared) Graybeal, Brittany Fuqua and Jared Fuqua. Sherry was a selfless mother, who always put her children first. Sherry loved many things in her life but none of which compared to her love of being a Grandma to Madison Thompson. It was very fitting that Sherry was born on the first day of summer because being in the sunshine was where she was happiest. One of Sherry’s most treasured places was Pine, Idaho. She loved spending time there with family at her brother Jay’s cabin. Many memories were shared there- sitting around a campfire, listening to country music, boating on Anderson Reservoir, and cross-country skiing in the winter. Sherry loved being in the water, whether it was jumping in a lake or soaking in a natural hot spring until her fingers pruned. Later in life Sherry met Toby Lisenbee. Toby was a great partner to her and whom she shared many adventures and memories with over 10 years together. In Sherry’s last few weeks she expressed excitement in that she soon would have the opportunity to catch up with her dad in Heaven, whom she did not have enough time with on Earth. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 12:00 noon at the Gooding Basque Center followed by a celebration of life luncheon. Cremation arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service – Gooding Chapel. I am a winner  I am a winner in the annual Christmas Tree Lighting / Chili Cookoff  Whoa, Whoa, Whoa Tee Hurd. What makes you think you won the Chili Cookoff... in any of the three categories judged? The traditional, the nontranditional, or the soup category? In fact, Tee Hurd, Erica Ive won the traditional chili entry with her beef/elk chili; Sue Robbins won the non-traditional entry with her creamy white chicken chili; and Sharon Kepford won the soup category with her potato bacon soup. Congratulations to each of the winners! So, Tee Hurd, was there another entry in which you felt you won? There were seventeen entries in the cookoff with fifteen being judged. Each and every one of those entries were winners. The judges had their work cut out for them. Thank you judges. I myself with my sidekick, Jim Super, made our rounds tasting chili. We agree with the judges with the fact the entries were hard to choose from. Once again, Tee Hurd, what makes you think you were a winner? Hold on a second. There were other winners in the competition: the commetty for putting on the cookoff, and the businesses that hosted the entries were winners. In addition, the whole group to do the Christmas Tree Lighting from “top to bottom” all shined. The truck lit up in the street was the winning float entry. cided to enter the contest made me a winner. For all those who decided to come and beat me (and didn’t make it) left me being a winner. Sorry, that is how the cornbread crumbles. To be cooking chili after work at 1:00 a.m. in the morning on the day of the cookoff made me a winner. To drive 155 miles one way to be part of the Christmas Tree Lighting/Chili Cookoff made me a winner. To be able to warm up my chili prior to competition made me a winner. (Cold chili doesn’t quite have the same flare to it. Thank you, responsible parties.) The weather, at a couple of degrees, was sure a lot better than driving 155 miles back in a blizzard. Those warming barrels met a warm satisfaction. Even the guy in the red suit, double parked with all the reindeer, said, “Tee, glad you could use your car to jumpstart the Christmas feeling of hope and joy.” So, as you can see, I was a winner no matter how you look at it. Winner never finish last, they start as winners. This is my “Cup of Tee,” giving me the chance to be a double winner next year 
