Overlooked ‘Mountain’ Fishing

Winter is taking its time in bringing snow to our mountains, but perhaps... it's the perfect excuse to wonder out and drop some flies or jigs in our mountain streams. It's also an opportunity to take on one of Idaho’s native unsung heroes: the mountain whitefish.

Mountain whitefish, the disco ballish, tight-lipped river dwellers that populate a majority of Idaho’s streams and rivers, are often overlooked and underhooked. In the words of Rodney Dangerfield, they “get no respect,” but where do these unfavorable allegations come from, and are they even accurate?

It’s fair to say that many passionate anglers who’ve seen their rod tip dip, thinking they have a feisty trout on the other end, only to reel in something else, have muttered the words: “Ahh. It’s just a whitefish." However, that whitefish on the end of your line has earned its stripes in Idaho, a fish that has called these waters home for thousands of years.

While they might not be as charismatic as the rainbow trout, regarding them as “trash fish” or “bottom feeders” can not be further from the truth. “Mountain whitefish are a fun species to target, especially in late winter when trout and other mountain stream species feed less,” said Joe Kozfkay, Fish and Game’s State Fisheries Manager. “Anglers have a pretty cool opportunity to catch these fish during this season, a lost tradition that often gets forgotten or overlooked.”

Whitefish tend to hunker down in deeper parts of the river. Their placement in the water, combined with their mouth’s puckered appearance located beneath their face, often earn them the misnomer “sucker fish.”

“Whitefish are actually members of the Salmonid family, which include salmon, trout, char and grayling,” said Kozfkay. But if whitefish are more closely related to trout, does that mean they’re outcompeting their distant cousins? Not according to stream surveys.

Some anglers might have concerns about the whitefish/trout dynamic in mountain rivers and streams. Fish and Game fish managers have been studying this relationship for decades and learned from research that trout populations can be affected by flow, habitat conditions or even harvest, but competition with whitefish is not a real concern.

Quick & Easy Guide to Mountain Whitefish Fishing

Whitefish check a lot of the boxes for stream fishing in winter and early spring (or any other time of year).

They’re plentiful, bag limits are usually 25 fish per day and they’re found in rivers and streams all over the state.

You can see them shimmering when the water’s low. More aggressive than other fish during winter, they slurp up a fly or bait just as readily as a trout would.

Risch Blasts Biden BLM For Pushing Lava Ridge

U.S. Senator Jim Risch released the following statement on Friday regarding the announcement of the final Record of Decision (ROD) for the Lava Ridge Wind Energy Project by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

"Today's decision on Lava Ridge flies in the face of the people of Idaho. Despite the outcry from Idahoans and the broader Japanese American community, the Biden-Harris White House refuses to listen. Instead, this administration will spend its final days attempting to inflict irreversible damage on Southern Idaho and the Minidoka National Historic Site. This is far from over. I will continue to fight Lava Ridge and this abuse of our public lands," said Risch.

Risch has led the Idaho delegation in introducing legislation and other measures to block the Lava Ridge Wind Energy Project, which would build hundreds of wind turbines on nearly 150,000 acres of public land in Southern Idaho.

In September, the Idaho delegation urged the Department of Interior to adopt the "No-Action Alternative" on the Lava Ridge Wind Energy Project. The delegation's letter followed the decision by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation and Idaho State Historic...

Winners of the 2024 Holiday Card Contest

Two Idaho student artists will have their winter-themed artwork featured on the Idaho Department of Education’s 2024 holiday cards: Fifth grader Emersyn Hanks of Rock Creek Elementary in Twin Falls took the K - 6 division with a whimsical Santa-themed tree, and Sandpoint High School eleventh grader Izzy Davidson’s hat-wearing holiday moose won the 7 - 12 category. Submissions were selected from a variety of competitive entries and voted on by Idaho Department of Education staff.

“This is always a fun and refreshing way for the department to get into the holiday spirit with a focus on students, and I always love seeing the amazing talent that these young artists have,” said Superintendent of Public Instruction Debbie Critchfield. “I’d like to thank each student who took the time to submit to the contest and to congratulate Emersyn and Izzy on their winning work this year.”

The contest also named K-12 grade level winners including Waleska Figueroa Maradago a first grade student at Gooding Elementary School.

...Mountain Whitefish Fishing continued

Whitefish will generally entertain the same bait, flies and lures that your run-of-the-mill rainbow trout would. If you’re accustomed to trout fishing in the warmer months, chances are your setup will work just fine for winter season whitefish. You might need some thicker waders, but you won’t have to break the bank on custom flies or lures.

Remember that, compared to trout, whitefish have smaller mouths. A good rule of thumb might be sizing down your flies or lures. They’re probably not going to get their mouths around a size 2 woolly bugger or a big bait hook with a glob of nightcrawler. Smaller is better. They also tend to hug the bottom of the river or holed up in pools. You might entice one up to the surface to take a dry fly, but more often than not you’re going to want to drop your fly or lure right in front of their nose. Try tossing a weighted nymph - either caddis, midge or stonefly - through slow-to-medium moving water during the warmest part of the day.

Not a fly fisherman? No worries. You can achieve the same outcome with a conventional spin rod and tacklebox. Common baits for whitefishing can include maggots, salmon eggs (also a reliable fly pattern) or chunks of worm.

Despite being filled with more bones than a prehistoric buffalo jump, mountain whitefish can prove to be excellent table fare worthy of any angler’s palette.

Whitefish can get real big, real quick. In their first three to four years, a whitefish commonly grows to 10-12 inches in length. A mature whitefish can exceed even that, oftentimes in the 1216-inch range. And the state catch-and-release record caught in 2022 came in at a whopping 21.5 inches long!

That’s a lot of meat, and it's not dissimilar from that of a trout. It’s light and mildly fishy tasting, but yes, is incredibly bony - a premise that often causes anglers to pass them up.

The most popular option is to smoke them low and slow in your backyard smoker. Smoking whitefish is one of the easiest ways to ensure your meal is bone-free. In the age of the internet, there are hundreds of smoked whitefish recipes out there worthy of your time. Do some research, experiment. See what works and what doesn’t. And above all else, have fun fishing.

Camas Quips Gathered by Tee Hurd

A young lady stepped into a nearby drug store the other day and asked how to take a dose of castor oil without tasting it. The proprietor fooled around a while and then asked her is she would like a glass of lemonade. Of course she would. When it was entirely consumed, he looked at her laughingly and said, “Well, did you taste it?” “Taste what?”

“The castor oil?” “Good heavens, was it in that lemonade? I wanted it for my mother.” --

A passer by riding by a hillbilly’s shack in the mountains, noticed the roof was on fire. He brought his car to a sudden stop and hurried up to the house. “Your house is on fire!” he shouted to a thick-bearded mountaineer.

“Ah knows it stranger,” nodded the mountaineer.

“Then why aren’t you doing something about it?” cried the excited stranger.

“Ah am”, drawled the mountaineer. “Ever since the fire started, ah’ve been prayin’ for rain.” -- -- --

A lawsuit was recently in full swing and during its progress, a witness was cross examined as to the habits and character of the defendant. “Has Mr. March a reputation for being abnormally lazy?” asked the counsel brusquely.

“Well sir, it’s this way-” “Will you kindly answer the question asked?” struck in the impatient lawyer.

“Well sir, I was going to put it this way. I don’t want to do the gentleman in question any injustice, and I won’t go so far as to say, sir, that he is lazy, exactly; but if it required any voluntary work on his part to digest food, why he’d die from lack of nourishment, sir.”

Ruth Mildred Brown

We shed tears and mourn the loss of our precious mom, Ruth Mildred Brown (age 95) of Gooding, Idaho, who went to be with the Lord on November 16, 2024.

We rejoice in the loving, redemptive, transforming work of God through His Son Jesus Christ. Through His death and resurrection, He accomplished the forgiveness of sin for all who repent and believe in Him. This truth allows us to express our hope in Mom's eternal life with Christ, that she is now resting in the arms of Jesus.

We thank our Lord for the wonderful mother He blessed us with and her faithful love for our dad, John Brown, and us five children. Her family was her most important priority. We were all loved and cared for. Her hands were never idle. She filled them with her creative gift of crafting and her love for gardens full of flowers. Her beautiful smile and cheerful attitude were enjoyed and appreciated by everyone who met and loved her.
