Lincoln County “Festival of Trees” Your Friday Lunch Destination! During the month of December, the Camas Senior Center will have special events on Fridays during lunch. This Friday, December 7, enjoy ham, scalloped potatoes, and brownie sundaes, and listen to guest speaker, Elaine Webb, talk about Vietnamese foods (includes a taste of Elaine’s specialties and authentic Vietnamese door prizes). On December 14th they will have BBQ chicken, mashed potatoes, and peanut butter pie. There will be a special appearance by a fun high school musical group - guitar, piano, bells, choir - and a pool tournament after dinner (with prizes for winners). December 21st is a must come with meltin-your-mouth Prime Rib roast and community dessert samples (bring your favorite Christmas recipe and five samples - cookies, candies, whatever) It will be a party with live music, sing-along songs, door prizes, and bingo with prizes after dinner. Be sure to bring an unwrapped toy for under the tree (to be donated to local children). The Christmas Shop will be open on these day too. On Friday, December 28, Come listen to the “Cliff Gals” and hear the fascinating story of how a biologist and a gal from a fishing boat in ALASKA ended up in FAIRFIELD... and sample their specialties! The Camas Senior Center is planning to feature all of Fairfield’s restaurants and businesses in their upcoming lunches. Everyone is welcome. Lunch prices are $4 (60 plus), $4.50 (10-59), and $2.50 (2-9)
The Lincoln County Festival of Trees will be held at the Lincoln County Community Center (201 South Beverly St. Shoshone) on December 8th at 4 p.m. Trees will be on display in conjunction with Lost N Lava Community Christmas Potluck. There will be an live auction during the evening to auction off all the donated trees and wreaths. Money raised from the Festival of Trees will fund a scholarship fund for students in Shoshone, Dietrich, and Richfield Schools. The Lost N Lava Potluck will begin at 6:30 p.m. and feature cowboy western music and poet Wayne Nelson from American Falls and others. Bring the whole family and a side dish or dessert. Enjoy a evening full of music and poetry. No cost to get in other than a side dish. Beautiful furniture, beautiful people, and a recued dog, it’s an American portrait. In this case, the portrait was taken at the Gooding branch of Wilson Bates Appliance and Furniture store on Main St. in Gooding to celebrate the new partnership between Gooding Dogs Group and Wilson Bates, a family owned company. Donell Short, webmaster at their corporate office and official dog lover, responded to the group’s Facebook request for sponsorship and she encouraged her employers to consider adding Gooding to their plan for community outreach by sponsoring the annual fee for the web based Gooding dog rescue group, www.goodingdogs.com. This website and the Gooding Dogs Group Facebook page are free services available to everyone. They advertise Lost, Found and Pound dogs in the Gooding County. Gooding Dogs Group began just a year ago by Nan Reedy and Debra McClain in cooperation with Dr. Jack Amen at the Gooding city/county impound. In just one year, seventy-one dogs to-date in Gooding County have been placed safely and many other lost and found dogs reunited with their families. Dogs have also found new families when their current families couldn’t keep them. A photo and description of every lost, found or pound dog is available 24/ 7 at www.goodingdogs.com and daily updates are made to the Gooding Dogs Group Facebook page. He was adopted shortly thereafter by Nan Reedy of Gooding Dogs Group where he has taken enthusiastic leadership of her two senior dogs who are now experiencing their second puppyhood. “Rescue?” Nan said, “Scruffy thinks he’s King”.

A few weeks ago I mentioned to the tone of, “Why do we have to do Traditional Thanksgivings?” If you recall I had even mentioned about having peacock instead of turkey for dinner. This week I’m extending the tradition of a Thanksgiving meal. Christmas is coming and I am sure some meal items are done because of tradition. I thought I would grab the ol’ cookbook and check out a few recipes to see what is traditional in other areas. The cookbook I looked into was the “Searchlight” cookbook. The recipes in this book were sent in by folks everywhere and the particular copyright date was 1945. It should show a light on traditional foods. One of the first lines in this book states, “There is a scientific reason for every direction given; consequently it is suggested that the general directions on the following pages and at the beginning of each classification be studied carefully.” To me that is a bit scary. We have scientists that are resorting to cooking. Apparently they have failed their experimental jobs. Repetition does not necessarily make tradition. Listed in this cookbook are many recipes with the use of prunes. The Northwest use to be the nation’s supplier of prunes. They were used fresh of dried. Maybe with the end of World War II, the prune stable was over, because orchards were taken out by the acres. Prune buns, prune pickles, prune stuffed apples, prune bread, prune sandwiches, along with prune and onion salad a few family favorites. Plum pudding could be fresh, but I’m sure if it stayed in the refrigerator too long it was prune pudding. Oyster stew, oyster casserole, and scalloped oysters with macaroni appeared to East Coast favorites. Although Maine is one of the leading producers of potatoes in the United States, I think they need to get more Idaho recipes for good ol’ potatoes (maybe the oyster recipes were needed to help get larger families to dig potatoes). Tongue Chicken suggests using tongue on toast with some chicken breast slices. This is accompanied by mayonnaise. I can see the need for chicken! Frog legs fried with bread crumbs... and to say everything tastes like chicken?! The recipe for boiled pig’s feet, scalloped pig’s feet, and pickled pig’s feet all suggest “wash & scrape” as the first line of preparation. Maybe the floor mat outside the door needs to be cleaned so the pigs can wipe their own feet before they come in the house. On the same note there is a process to freshen salt fish. Again, why should I restore “old” fish to make it fresh. Many of the instructions for serving state, “serve immediately.” That is a good plan not only for the fish, but for many of the seeming tasteless recipes. Vinegar pie may only be tolerable if the meringue is twice as tall as the vinegar filling. At any rate tradition seems to be: what is available, what is used for survival, or what is a favorite passed on. Once again this is my “Cup of Tee” past on traditions. Tee Hurd

Kevin David Keading
Lola A. Wright
Kevin David Keading, a resident of Shoshone, our beloved Son, Grandson, Nephew, passed peacefully into eternity Monday morning, November 26, 2012 at Primary Children’s Hospital SLC Utah. Kevin is the son of Jake Keading and Linzey Humbers and the brother to Dustin Keading. Kevin was born in Twin Falls Idaho on August 31, 2012 and resided with his family in Shoshone. He leaves behind his beloved Grand Parents Randy and Tracy Keading, Linda Humbers and an Uncle Beau Keading. We enjoyed Kevin’s cute little smiles and holding him. Although his time was short we are thankful for him being a part of our lives. He will be missed but never forgotten. A memorial service was held Saturday December 1, 2012 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Shoshone. Cremation arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service - www.demarayfuneralservice.com.
“Lola left this world wrapped in the love of her family.” Journal of Lola Wright 1919-2012 Lola Wright, 93, was reunited with her eternal companion, Forest Albert Wright, on Thursday, November 29, 2012. She was born on July 26, 1919 in Cleveland, Idaho to Alfred and Hannah Penina (Nina) Anderson. The Anderson family moved to Wendell, Idaho where Lola went to school and met Forest. They were married December 13, 1943 in Long Beach, California and later sealed in the Idaho Falls temple on August 6, 1965. After the war, Lola and Forest settled on a farm north of Gooding, Idaho. Later, Lola worked 24 years for the Gooding Elementary School as a secretary until she retired in 1980. She was known for her graciousness, generosity, and gratitude for life. Many appreciated her compassion and unique ability to really listen. Lola fulfilled many callings as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was active in community organizations. She and Forest served a two-year mission as Boise Temple workers. Later in life, Lola continued her community service with the Gooding Hospital Auxiliary. Lola lived in the Gooding, Idaho until 2011, when she moved to Utah to be closer to her children. Together, Forest and Lola enjoyed a marriage that lasted 58 years until Forest passed away in 2001. Her posterity includes her children, Dennis (Kaye) Wright of Springville, Utah and Patricia (Robert) Morse of St. George, Utah, 10 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. Grandma Lola loved to make the things around her beautiful. The ever-changing décor of her home and verdant flowerbeds and gardens were evidence of this desire. She also loved serve those around her, whether it was with warm donuts, sewing lessons, pickles, homemade noodles or whitewashing fences. Lola lived her entire life in a small town, but her influence has truly extended much farther. Her testimony of the Savior and love for her family lives on in her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Memorial services were held on Monday, December 3, 2012 at the LDS chapel in Alpine, Utah. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the Wendell Cemetery. Richard “Dick” J. Cole Richard “Dick” J. Cole, 89, a resident of Gooding, died Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at the North Canyon Medical Center in Gooding. Dick was born on January 22, 1923 in Filer, Idaho, the son of Walter J. And Ruth Dryden Cole. He was raised and educated in Filer and Jerome, graduating from Jerome High School in 1941 where he enjoyed playing football and boxing. Dick married Donna J. “Jo” Lanning from Shoshone on June 9, 1943 in Elko, Nevada. They were married for 62 years and together they had 6 children. In 1954 the couple moved to Conda, Idaho where Dick was employed with MK and later Beker Industries. Dick and Jo were the last couple to leave the little community of Conda when it closed in 1984. They then moved to Gooding, Idaho where they spent the last years of their lives. Jo preceded him in death on June 1, 2005. Dick loved fishing, camping, raising beautiful gardens and watching Boise State Football. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones and friends. He is survived by: his son, Stanley Richard and wife, Mary Cole of Gooding; three daughters, Donna and husband, Bryant Smith of Soda Springs, Idaho, Judy and husband, Gator Wilmut and Cinda and husband, Dan McCormick, all of Lewiston, Idaho; his brother Gary and wife, Kay Cole of Penrose, Colorado; and sister, Sharon and husband, Ed Ballerstein of Gooding, Idaho; 20 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Walter J. And Ruth Dryden Cole; his brother, Lowell Cole, sister, Eileen Pendergrast, and infant son, Richard J. Cole. A memorial gathering was held on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at the Gooding Senior Center in Gooding. A private inurnment took place at the Shoshone Cemetery.

Beaudine L. “Skeet” Donaldson Beaudine “Skeet” Donaldson, 79, a resident of Gooding, passed away peacefully at her home on November 26, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer. Skeet was born June 19, 1933 in Roscoe, California, to Arthur & Gloria Gaunt. Skeet attended schools in many Nevada towns along the interstate 80 corridor. She graduated from high school in Folsom, California. After graduation, she moved to Monterey, California to be near her beloved grandmother. She worked as a waitress where she met Reuben Donaldson who was to become her soul mate for 60 plus years. They were married on January 12, 1952, and from this union came 5 sons; David, Matthew, Daniel, Benjamin and Ronard. Skeet worked for years as a waitress and in 1962 she became a Tupperware Dealer and moved quickly to manager. She achieved many sales awards and was number 1 sales manager in the western region many times. In 1972, the family moved to Idaho and settled in Gooding. She continued in Tupperware for some time and continued with some waitress work. At about 60 years of age, she chose another career path as a dog groomer’s assistant to her sister Vannessa McGuire and continued for nearly 20 years until her health deprived her this privilege. Many of her clients were shut in people and she picked up and delivered their pets. Through these years Skeet took on the responsibility of foster parenting. Over the years the home was shared with 23 foster children from 1 to 16 years of age. She was a very positive person and always had inspirational sayings tacked to the sides of the cabinets in her home. She always found the best in all of her acquaintances, never dwelling on a negative. She was very fond of having family around at family events with all the grandchildren around. She was a very active person. In season, she was an avid bowler, bowling 3 leagues a week and was a member of the Mountain View Lanes Traveling League for nearly 30 years of bowling in all the bowling centers in the area, also bowled in any tournament that she was qualified for both near and far. In the other season, she loved golf and played 2 or 3 times a week. For years, she played in as many city tournaments as she could for the Gooding Golf Club. She has the distinction of having 3 holes in one. Skeet was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, and her oldest son David. She is survived by her husband, Reuben; sons, Matthew (Carol), Daniel, Benjamin (Crystal) and Ronald; 17 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; sisters, Vannessa, and Joelle. Skeet is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and foster children. This beautiful and gracious lady will be greatly missed by her loving family and friends. A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 am, on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at Demaray Funeral Service – Gooding Chapel. Condolences may be sent at www.demarayfuneralservice.com.

Also present were Commissioner Ken Backstrom, Commissioner Bill Davis, and Clerk Korri Blodgett. The Board reviewed the agenda. Commissioner Backstrom made a motion to approve the agenda with a correction of the meeting date of August 24th.Seconded by Commissioner Davis. Unanimous. Marypat Fields met with the Board and gave her resignation as Camas County’s representative on the South Central Public Health District Board, effective September 27, 2012. Marypat has served the county for over 20 years and the Board thanked her for her outstanding service and dedication. Dwight Butlin met with the Board and discussed the Fricke Creek Subdivision. Jim Phillips was also present. After a lengthy discussion, the Board contacted legal counsel, Paul Fitzer, to clarify a few issues. Commissioner Davis made a motion to table the discussion on the Fricke Creek Subdivision to a later date. Seconded by Commissioner Backstrom. Unanimous. The Board took a brief recess at 10:22 a.m. The Board reconvened at 10:30 a.m. and reviewed and discussed the applications for the prosecuting attorney position. They will start interviews after the closing date of September 26, 2012. The Board adjourned at 12:00 noon. --------------------------------------------------

Commissioner Backstrom made a motion to go into executive session pursuant to Idaho Code 67-2345(1)(b) to consider the evaluation dismissal or discipline of a public officer, employee or individual. A roll call vote showed all in favor. The Board entered into executive session at 1:22 p.m. The Chair declared the Board out of executive session at 1:41 p.m. The Board reconvened at 2:58 p.m. and discussed applicants for the prosecuting attorneys position. It was the consensus of the Board to offer the Camas County Prosecuting Attorneys position to Matt Pember. The Board contacted Matt Pember by phone and he accepted the position and will start on October 15th. The Board reviewed the bills. October 15, 2012 The meeting was called to order at 9:02 am by Chairman Janet Croner. Also present were Commissioner Ken Backstrom, Commissioner Bill Davis, Prosecuting Attorney Matt Pember, and Clerk Korri Blodgett. The Board reviewed the agenda. Commissioner Backstrom made a motion to amend the agenda to remove the airport discussion and add the swearing in of the Prosecuting Attorney, as it was inadvertently omitted from the agenda. Chairman Janet Croner gave the Oath of Office to newly appointed Prosecuting Attorney Matt Pember. The Board reviewed a letter of appreciation from school counselor Janet Vouch, for support in a new program in the schools called PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies). The Board discussed the ICRMP Risk Management Discount Program that is now available. The clerk’s office will review the enrollment process and discuss the process with the Board next week. To everyone that brought craft items and baked goods, thank you. A lunch of soup or chili, fresh bread, and cinnamon rolls was enjoyed by all. The Idaho Unclaimed Property Program posts an updated list of Idaho Unclaimed Property owners on the internet once each month. This online list can be viewed at sto.idaho.gov(click on “Unclaimed Property”). Anyone without Internet access can view the list on computers at most public libraries. Unclaimed Property consists of abandoned bank accounts, forgotten refund checks, utility deposits, gift certificates, and more.
Would your 4-H youth like the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in livestock judging, demonstrations, care, and exhibition of animals into one activity? The Skill-a-thon provides youth the opportunity to learn about the importance of livestock and their products to the environment. This event will be held at the Gooding County Extension Office.
