Celebrating Adoption in November

Idaho Courts are celebrating the adoption process this month as state courts recognize National Adoption Day, November 19th.

In a proclamation, Idaho Supreme Court Chief Justice G. Richard Bevan called for Idahoans to "celebrate the powerful difference Adoption makes in the lives of children, and encourage oth ers to assist wherever and however they can." You can read the proclamation at the Idaho Supreme Court's website, isc.idaho.gov

More than 355 foster children in Idaho were waiting to be adopted as of a count this year, according to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare. A total 309 children were adopted in the 2022 state fiscal year. "The Idaho State Judiciary recognizes the positive impact of a safe home and loving family in a child's life," Chief Justice Bevan stated in his proclamation.

National Adoption Day is a collective effort to raise awareness of the more than 113,000 children waiting to be adopted from foster care in the United States. A coalition of national partners (the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, Alliance for Children’s Rights and Children’s Action Network) founded National Adoption Day.

The first National Adoption Day was inspired by the innovative efforts of Michael Nash, a former presiding judge of Los Angeles County’s Juvenile Court. He opened the court on Satur days, engaged the volunteer efforts of court personnel and finalized adoptions to reduce the backlog of one of the busiest courts in the nation.

To date, the dreams of more than 75,000 children in foster care have come true as part of National Adoption Day events.

Trapper Education Classes Coming Up In Southeast Idaho

With trapping seasons opening up all over the state during the winter months, now is the time to fulfill your trapper education requirement and begin trapping this year! Trapper Education covers trapping laws, safety, ethics, basic trapping methods and ways to avoid non-target catches.

Two opportunities to get certified in Pocatello: Saturday, Nov. 19 or Saturday, Dec. 17 at the Idaho Fish and Game office located at 1345 Barton Road. Each one-day course will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Already an experienced trapper? You may still need the class. As of July 2018, Idaho requires anyone who has not purchased a trapping license BEFORE July 2011 to complete a mandatory Trapper Education course.

Jerome Election Discrepancy Changes Election Night Results

While election night results held few surprises for Idaho vot ers, the results of one race were changed in Jerome County.

As part of the normal verification process leading to the county election canvass, Jerome County elections staff encountered a series of discrepancies between the cast ballot counts printed on the reports produced by their central tabulator and those same counts subsequently released to the public as the “unofficial final results” on election night. The ultimate cause of the issue was a missing “vote type” configuration in the translation process between the tabulated results and what was published. This resulted in about 700 ballots missing from online totals.

The Legislative District 26 races were tight before the miss ing ballots, but only one race was ultimately affected - State Representative Seat B.

Karma Metzler Fitzgerald's slight lead over Jack Nelsen slipped away with 7,833 votes (49.74%) going to the Democrat and 7,916 votes (50.26%) to the Republican.

Seat A went to Ned Burns (D) with 7,961 votes (50.12%) over Mike Pohanka (R) with 7,923 votes (49.88%). The District 26 Senate seat went to Ron Taylor (D) with 8,115 (51.63%) over Laurie Lickley (R) 7,603 (48.37%).

The Jerome office and the Secretary of State wish to emphasize that all results, as published on election night, are unofficial until certified by each county’s respective canvass and certified by the state canvassing board.

-- -- -- -- --

All but one county contests in Lincoln, Camas and Good ing were uncontested. Two candidates ran for Lincoln County Clerk: Cindi Sievers (R) 1,122 (96.06%) and Cieara Davis (IND) 46 (3.94%). State wide, Republicans took all the state offices. In Gooding County, voters retained Magistrate Casey Robinson 89.62% (Yes) to 10.38% (No).

The Constitutional amendment SJR 102 passed with 52% of the votes, giving Idaho lawmakers the ability to call themselves back into session without the governor's approval. The Advisory Question to refund $500 million back to Idaho taxpayers passed with 80% of voter approval.

Cup of Tee by Tee Hurd

© They walked in, two by two. There were men and women. Some were older. Some were younger. For quite a few, it was their first time. They came from many ethnic backgrounds. Many came in the morning with some at night. A few even came in wheel chairs. There were no locked gates in which to enter. No one held them a gun point. Their only qualification was that they had to be on the registry. These people were at the polls casting their votes for who they wanted to represent them in their government.

I hope everyone was able to get to the polls and cast their vote in our national and local elections. We are fortunate group of people with the privilege of voting, a right that is insured by our veterans. They crawled in the mud and swamps, over rocks and through rain, and every adverse condition you can imagine... all while under gun fire knowing at any given time they may not return. Barbed wire, land mines, and overhead fire did not stop their belief in freedom for all.

On the eleventh day, the eleventh hour of the eleventh month, Armistice Day was established in 1917. An armistice is an agreement to stop

all fighting - in other words, a truce. Armistice Day was day set aside to reflect and remem ber the sacrifice men and women made during World War I.

In 1938 congress voted to make Armistice Day a federal holiday. In 1954, November 11th was recognized as Veterans Day. In 1968 Veter ans Day was changed to be the 4th Monday in October. With a lot of pressure from veterans and the general public in 1978, November 11th (the traditional day) was back to being observed as veterans Day.

Our Veterans have insured every freedom we enjoy today. We should not only view Veterans Day as a one day affair, but an everyday situa tion of life. If you haven’t taken time to thank a veteran earlier this week, go ahead and extend a thank you now and maybe again next week. It is very important to give thanks for times of peace and remember who protecting your rights everyday.

I can’t say enough thanks for all the veterans who have ensured the way in which I can carry on my everyday life.

This is my full “Cup of Tee” with a salute for all our veterans. THANK YOU!

The Idaho Community Foundation is awarding more than $76,000 to 15 organizations in the Magic Valley from its Forever Idaho South Central program – including domestic violence programs, schools, senior centers and more.

One of the unique aspects about Forever Idaho grants is that they are flexible and can be used for the recipients’ greatest needs.

“Time passes between when someone applies for a Forever Idaho grant and when they receive it. Their needs may change during that time,” said Lisa Bearg, ICF’s Senior Philanthropic Advisor. “We want our grants to be as responsive as we can make them.”

For Idaho Diabetes Youth Programs, Inc., the grant will allow them to expand their programming efforts throughout southern Idaho for children with type 1 diabetes and their families. The flexibility of the grant is essential, said executive director Lisa Gier.

“We serve children and their families, regardless of their ability to pay,” said Gier. “These funds will make it possible for us to continue that charge, even as we grow.”

Simply Hope Family Outreach in Burley plans to use their funds for their Teen Hope center. They currently serve 46 teens in their afterschool program, teaching life skills through evidencebased programs and peer coaching. With this grant, they can expand and support their activities in STEM, art therapy and entrepreneurship.

“This grant from the Idaho Community Foundation is just right for Teen Hope,” said Sheri Allred, project director. “There are so many life skills you can learn through experiences.”

This year's Forever Idaho South Central grantees include:

...Trapper Education Classes continued

Registration for this class can be completed online at https://idfg.idaho.gov/hunt/education or by stopping by any regional Fish and Game office for assistance. The cost of the course is $9.75 per student. Seats are limited!

Don’t live in the Pocatello area? Idaho Fish and Game is working to provide some additional trapper education classes throughout the region in the upcoming year; however, if you know you need this class, don’t wait! A drive to Pocatello for a one-day class is a small sacrifice to ensure you can trap this winter… and for a lifetime!

Please note this course will NOT allow a trapper to immediately begin trapping wolves. Anyone intending to trap wolves must attend a wolf- trapper education class prior to purchasing wolf trapping tags. Therefore, anyone intending to trap wolves that did not hold an Idaho trapping license prior to July 2011 is required to take both trapper and wolf-trapper education.

Wolf Trapper Education Classes

Anyone intending to trap wolves in Idaho must attend wolf trapper education prior to buying wolf trapping tags. Several wolf-trapping courses are being offered throughout the state over the next couple of months. These classes are taught by certified wolf-trapping instructors who travel from region to region to provide these one-day classes. Wolf trapper education covers wolf trap ping regulations, ethics, and trapping methods. Two opportunities to get wolf trapper education.

Sunday, Nov. 20 at the Idaho Fish and Game regional office in Pocatello.

Saturday, Dec. 10 at the Idaho Fish and Game regional office located in Idaho Falls.

Anyone intending to trap wolves that did NOT hold an Idaho trapping license prior to 2011 is required to take BOTH trapper and wolf-trapper education. So, if that applies to you, check for upcoming trapper education classes as well.

Registration for a class can be completed online at https://idfg.idaho.gov/hunt/education or by stopping by any regional Fish and Game office for assistance. The cost of the course is $9.75 per student. Seats are limited!

Again, do not wait for a wolf trapper education course to come to you! These classes are taught only a couple of times a year in most regions.

Hunter Education Course (in-person and online)

Offered to students ages 9 and older, these courses provide instruction on firearm handling and safety, hunting law and ethics, responsibilities towards landowners, hunting skills, wildlife identification, survival skills and first aid, and management and conservation.

There are three in-person classes scheduled at the Fish and Game regional office in Pocatello in November and December, two of which coincide with holiday breaks from school!

Nov. 21 – 26 (except Thanksgiving Day); Noon to 3 p.m.; Sat. 9 a.m. to noon.

Dec. 5 – 10; 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Sat. 9 a.m. to noon.

Dec. 19 – 23; noon to 4 p.m. each day

Registration for these classes can be completed online at https://idfg.idaho.gov/hunt/education or by stopping by any regional Fish and Game office for assistance. The cost of the course is $9.75 per student.

Who needs Hunter Education? Those born on or after Jan. 1, 1975, must either complete a hunter education course to purchase a hunting license, OR show proof of a previously held license in Idaho or another state.

Other classes will be added to the schedule over the coming year in locations throughout the Southeast Region. So, please check the online schedule regularly at https://idfg.idaho.gov/hunt/ education to see added classes.

Don’t forget that Hunter Education can also be completed entirely online through https:// www.hunter-ed.com/idaho/. Cost of the online course is $32.50. No field day required.

For more information about the trapper and hunter education programs in Idaho or specific classes in the Southeast Region, please contact the regional Fish and Game office in Pocatello at 208-232-4703.
