Over 400 foster children located in Idaho await adoption, according to a proclamation signed this month by Chief Justice G. Richard Bevan. “To help these children find permanent, nurturing families the courts of Idaho encourage you to celebrate with us on November 18 in raising awareness about the need for adoptive homes,” the proclamation states. While National Adoption Day is November 18, a Saturday, local courts will hold various related events this Friday, November 17. To RSVP for the free event, please visit district2casa.com/adoption. The Third Judicial District in partnership with Region 3 Health and Welfare will also host a celebration including adoptions and a ceremony for families. Adoptions will happen on the first floor of the Canyon County Courthouse with the ceremony at noon in the Public Meeting Room of the Canyon County Administration Building. Idaho Department of Health and Welfare Director Dave Jeppesen is expected to attend and finalize an adoption for at least one family. The Fourth Judicial District will hold a number of adoption hearings at the Ada County Courthouse in Boise. Don't Burn Your Home!

Did you know heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fire deaths? As the weather cools, your local Fire Department reminds you to take precautions to prevent heating-related structure fires. Follow these tips from the National Fire Protection Association: • Keep anything that can burn at least three-feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heater. • Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional. • Have a three-foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters. • Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home. • Never use your oven to heat your home. • Have a qualified professional install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters or central heating equipment according to the local codes and manufacturer’s instructions. • Install wood burning stoves following manufacturer’s instructions or have a professional do the installation. All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside to avoid carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. • Install and maintain CO alarms to avoid the risk of CO poisoning. If you smell gas in your gas heater, do not light the appliance. Leave the home immediately and call your local fire department or gas company. • Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed. • Always use the right kind of fuel, specified by the manufacturer, for fuel burning space heaters. • Test smoke alarms at least once a month.

Don’t let a chimney fire happen to you and your family!

According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA), chimney fires have been described as creating: • loud cracking and popping noise • a lot of dense smoke • an intense, hot smell As CSIA’s website describes, “Chimney fires can burn explosively – noisy and dramatic enough to be detected by neighbors or people passing by flames or dense smoke may shoot from the top of the chimney. Homeowners report being startled by a low rumbling sound that reminds them of a freight train or a low flying airplane. However, those are only the chimney fires you know about — the majority of chimney fires go undetected. Slow-burning chimney fires don’t get enough air or have fuel to be dramatic or visible and they often go undetected until a later chimney inspection, but the temperatures they reach are very high and can cause as much damage to the chimney structure... continued on page 4...

How can you prevent a chimney fire?

Keep your chimney clean. If enough creosote (a dark brown or black flammable tar deposited on the walls of a chimney) builds up in your chimney and the internal flue temperature is high enough, you could have a chimney fire. That’s why it is important to have your chimney regularly inspected and cleaned by a certified chimney sweep. If you think your chimney may be on fire, err on the side of caution and call 911. The Fairfield Fire Department would rather respond to a false alarm than for your life and home to be threatened by a chimney fire.

...Empowering Parents Grant Applications continued

in 2022 by Governor Brad Little and the Legislature to assist Idaho families in addressing learning loss. Since launch, Empowering Parents has helped over 45,000 families all while also supporting local businesses and the local economy. Eligible parents or guardians can use the grant funds to purchase education-related services and resources on the Empowering Parent online marketplace such as tutoring services, internet connectivity, computer hardware and software, instructional materials, and more. Nearly $30 million will be available this year, enough to fund just under 28,900 grants at $1,000 per student and a maximum of $3,000 per family. Students attending Idaho public and private schools and students who are homeschooled are all eligible. The program applies to students in kindergarten through the 12th grade. It is a rolling application period that will remain open until all of the funding has been distributed. “Odyssey is honored to continue supporting the Idaho Empowering Parents program and to build on the positive impact we have had,” said Joseph Conner, founder and CEO at Odyssey. “With the additional $30 million now available for families, we are helping to ensure that every student has the resources and tools they need to succeed. We will continue to focus on providing easy and modern access to resources that enhance every student’s education journey.” Empowering Parents grants will be prioritized and awarded first to households with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) at or below $60,000 per year. Once the first phase of awards is completed, the AGI limit will be expanded to households earning up to $75,000 per year. After the second phase is completed and if there are still grant funds available, the program will be available to all other eligible applicants on a first come, first served basis. “We are grateful to the Governor and the Legislature for providing funding to make Empower Parents a permanent program,” said Matt Freeman, executive director of the State Board. “My staff continue their commitment to administer this program with fidelity and to ensure that eligible educational products and services are available for Idaho students.” Families who received those grants are eligible for the second year, but they must reapply. For more information about the program is available at: https://empoweringparents.idaho.gov/

We have a Republic, If we can keep it...

by Dorothy Moon, IDGOP Chairwoman Everyone complains about politics, but how many of us actually do anything about it? Voter turnout this past week was high in some counties, but still represented less than half of registered voters. Why is there such apathy toward the political process? Politics has a bad reputation. You can’t go a week without some leftist hit piece on network news or a disaffected official taking to the editorial pages to slam his own party. It makes it look like the political process is all about name calling and infighting rather than working to protect the rights of the people of Idaho. But politics is only as good as the people involved, so we need better candidates. Too often, candidates portray themselves as conservatives on the campaign trail only to renege on those principles once in office. Is it any wonder that voters think the political process is broken? What is a good citizen to do? Turning out to vote is great, but maybe it’s time you took the next step and stood for public office yourself. Elective office was never meant to be restricted to certain classes or groups of people, but is open to all. Voters are desperately looking for men and women who practice what they preach and truly serve the people rather than the special interests. Don’t wait for someone else to do the job. If you’re looking around the room at a Lincoln Day Dinner or conservative event wondering who should step up to protect our Idaho values, look in the mirror — maybe it’s your time! We can’t take our freedoms for granted. Thousands of people...

...We have a Republic, If we can keep it

are moving to Idaho because they believe we are a conservative state that cares for the unborn, protects our 2nd amendment rights, and stands up to the national, state, and local political establishment. But those values will quickly disappear if nobody stands up to protect them. Don’t think it can’t happen here. Your new neighbors will tell you that they once thought it couldn’t happen in California, in Oregon, or in Colorado, but it did. Those beautiful states, full of people who loved the same liberties we cherish in Idaho, fell to the anti-American ideas of woke leftism.. Preventing the same thing from happening here requires action on your part — don’t assume someone else will take care of it. Make no mistake: Idaho is the next target for the totalitarian left. Whether your ancestors came here six generations ago or you moved here this year, it’s time to take action. Vote. Donate. Volunteer. Run for office. Our founding fathers gave us a republic, if we can keep it. That’s not a charge you leave in the hands of lawmakers, government officials, or political parties. The future of Idaho is in your hands.
