Football Season Ends For Gooding & Dietrich The Dietrich Blue Devils ended their football season this last weekend in Riggins with a loss to Salmon River High School - 35 to 12 - and they will have wait another year for a shot the state championship. The home field advantage ran out for the Gooding Senator this last weekend with a loss to Shelley H.S. 47 to 7. The Senator came out strong at the halfway point of the first quarter with long touchdown run on their first possession after receiving a punt from Shelley. They held on to that lead until the last four minutes of the second quarter. After that, the game belonged to the Russets who rarely let the Senator cross center field. Although it was a disappointing end, the Senators had a great return to the 3A division. Next year they should be even better.

District 26 Election Results The 2012 Election is finished (at least in Idaho). Props 1, 2 & 3 brought out a lot of voters in our area. In Gooding and Lincoln Counties, nearly 100% of the voters cast ballots on those referendums, while in Blaine County about 3% did not. In Blaine County, many voters only voted in the Presidential race. In fact, at 8:05 a.m. on Wednesday (11/7), 5,992,918 votes were reported in Blaine County for Barack Obama. That number was later revised down to 5,992.

Gooding County Historical Society Notification of Election of Officers & Board of Directors The Gooding County Historical Society announced their election of Officers and Board of Directors. You must be a member of the Gooding County Historical Society for a period of at least 6 months to run for office, and dues for 2012 must be paid for the current year. Legislative Town Hall Meetings District 26 Legislators have anounced the schedual for the pre-session meetings for our area communities. On November 14th, District 26 Legislators will be at the Gooding City Council room from 9 to 11:30 a.m., and the Wendell City Hall from 12 noon to 1 p.m. On November 16th, they will be at the Fairfield City Hall from 10 to 11:45 a.m. and the Camas Senior Center for lunch. In the afternoon, they will travel to the Shoshone Community Center to meet with folks from 2 to 4 p.m. On December 11th, they will be at the Snake River Grill in Hagerman for a lunch meeting - 12 to 1 p.m.
17th Annual Gooding Holiday Craft Show MUCH MORE THAN A CRAFT SHOW The Gooding Chamber of Commerce announced this week that the 17th Annual Holiday Craft Show will be held on Friday, November 30th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, December 1st from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Gooding High School (1050 7th Ave West). Everyone is encouraged to support our local community crafters, home based businesses, the efforts of the Gooding Chamber of Commerce, and Helping Hearts and Hands. The craft show was started 17 years ago by Louise Ervin (formerly of Grandma’s Store) and her daughter, Theresa Patterson, who now operates Helping Hearts and Hands. HH&H is a non-profit Community Resource Center and Food Bank that helps individuals and families affected by difficulties such as disabilities, homelessness, temporary job loss, single parenthood, and more. The Camas County Public Library always celebrates Christmas by having a drawing for a special Christmas Basket - different each year. This year’s basket has a winter theme to it and is filled with great winter time things, especially for going skiing at Soldier Mountain. Two of the items in the basket are a punch card for Soldier Mountain and a Soldier Mountain t-shirt. The basket is currently on display at the library and drawing tickets are on sale for $5.00 a piece or 5 tickets for $20.00. The drawing will take place at the last Varsity Boys Basketball game before Christmas. Watch for more details in next week’s Courier. from the Editor Why Props 1, 2 & 3 Failed While the proponents of Propositions 1, 2 & 3 are celebrating their “victory,” the truth is that they failed. Make no bones about it, these laws will be back in one form or another. One reason for this is that, unless the legislature does something, the repeal of Prop 3 could cost some school districts a lot of money. But, that’s a story for another time. So... how did they fail? Much of it is based on how voters perceived these propositions. The proponents would like to believe that people voted “NO” to show their “commitment to our children’s education.” That not necessarily the reason why people voted the way they did. First, many voters were confused about what they were voting for (or against). I sat and listened to a person rail against teacher unions, and then said that’s why he was voting “NO” on Prop One - and he wasn’t alone. A better way to have worded these propositions would have been to say, “Should we overturn the education laws passed by our legislators? Yes or No.” Would that have eliminated all confusion? Probably not, but at least it would have been more honest about the intent of the proponents. Second, a lot of you voted “NO” on Prop Two, not because you were supporting teachers, but because you thought the law (S1110) was too supportive of teachers. Specifically, most of you want teachers to live in the real world where, if you don’t do your job or meet certain standards, you get fired. The idea of giving bonuses to teachers for “doing their job” is abhorrent to most people. The way to encourage a teacher to improve is not give them more money, but by putting their job on the line. Third, the idea of giving computers to students was (for most of you) just stupid. That’s not the state’s job... it’s the parent’s responsibility. If there are students that can’t afford a computer, then why not address that issue on an individual basis. At the heart of this issue is the feeling that we have been spending a lot of money on education without seeing much return. The proponents of these propositions did get one thing right: our legislators do need to take a better look at these education issues - simpler is better. Eliminate tenure (renewable contracts) but don’t attack teacher unions. Standards are good, but only if they get rid of those who can’t teach. People are sick and tired of the entitlement mentality - free this, free that - education should not be an obligation of the state, it should be a privilege you earn.

Dorothy Louise Hall Dorothy Louise Hall, 85, a resident of Shoshone, Idaho, died November 12, 2012, at St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center in Twin Falls, Idaho. Dorothy was born on January 8, 1927, in Lincoln, Nebraska, the daughter of Daniel and Helen Langdon. She was a proud Irish woman. She was raised and educated in Lincoln, Nebraska. She married Gordon Hall on June 29, 1946, in Lincoln, Nebraska. Dorothy always felt that she earned an honorary degree while Gordon was attending Idaho State University. She called it the PHT - Pushed Husband Through. Dorothy had an excellent work ethic and had several jobs throughout her lifetime, such as a clerk at Shoshone City Hall, Idaho Grange Coop, and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. The job she was most proud of was executive secretary to the vice president at Aerojet in California. First and foremost, Dorothy was an excellent mother and wife. She excelled in cooking, sewing, art and needlepoint. Mom also believed that she was a fabulous golfer and fisherman; no one had the heart to tell her otherwise. She is survived by her daughter, Linda McCown (Lee); son, Rick Hall (Lucy); son, Randy Hall; brother, Richard Langdon; sister, Patricia Langdon, grandchildren Erin, Jenny, Eric; and four great grandchildren. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one grandson and one granddaughter. She was a devout member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Shoshone. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Shoshone. The family would like to extend a special thanks to her neighbors; Brenda and Kaylin; and to Dr. Davis, Janet Sandy, and the staff at Shoshone Family Medical Center. No public services are planned. A private family memorial service will be held at the Shoshone Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service. Condolances may be sent to the family at the DFS website www.demarayfuneralservice.com.
David Gran Rigel David Gran Rigel, 62, of Hagerman, died Nov. 5, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family after a short battle with cancer. He was born Dec. 2, 1949, at Grants Pass, Ore., to Jesse and Enid Rigel, the fifth of seven children. In 1980 in Nevada, he married Loniene Sanders. They shortly moved to Idaho to farm. He raised calves for many years and also drove milk truck for the past 10 years for the Giltner family. Dave served honorably in the Navy in Guam and South Carolina as a young man. He cherished his family, yearly family trips to Oregon and fall hunting trips with his son. Dave loved the outdoors and had a great sense of humor. Dave will be missed by all his loved ones. Services were held on Saturday, November 10th, at Parke’s Funeral Home in Wendell.
Emma June Hulme, infant daughter of Mark and Mickinly Hulme, residents of Hagerman, passed away Thursday, November 1, 2012 at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Boise. A funeral service was held on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at the LDS Church in Hagerman, with burial at the Hagerman Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service – Gooding Chapel.

tions and potential impeachment for misconduct. Thomas Jefferson and John Adams were basically from one common stock and one common philosophy. They were highly educated and had tremendous respect (honed over decades of study) for the God given rights and freedoms of each individual. Bureaucrats feel that people have a rather annoying tendency of wanting to live their own lives the way they want, where they want, and with whom they want. So, bureaucracy creates forms, paperwork, inspections, appeals, delay, uncertainty, and unbelievable expense. It also creates the possibility of shame, disgrace, fines, or prison, if a person runs afoul of the regulations... as interpreted by low level bureaucrats and/or politically ambitious prosecutors. It is estimated that next year will include thousands of pages of new federal administrative regulations that will pass to the state and on to the county. The regulations and enforcement proceedings will make thousands of American lawyers (who practice administrative or tax law) very rich. But, they only do damage to the citizens harassed by them. Cooperation, coordination, and communication among the people of Camas County and our county commissioners, is essential to limiting the forth coming regulations to protect and preserve our county’s identity and beliefs. It is “We the People” who must exercise the rights and responsibilities of our citizenship to make appropriate demands of our elected representatives, and ultimately hold them accountable.
