Changes for the Lava Ridge Wind Energy Project?
From the Mountain States Policy Center
Federal government priorities have recently collided with the Lava Ridge energy project as the pursuit of green energy initiatives conflicts with the preservation of historical sites. Last month the federal Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) notified the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) that they “cannot ensure the project won’t cause damage to the nearby Minidoka National Historic Site.” This is a difficult hurdle for the Biden administration which has been trying to force the Gem State to align with their green energy efforts that burden Idaho while benefiting California.
It seems to have given frustrated Idaho officials and communities, a much-needed respite in its conflict with the Bureau of Land Management. The additional reality of Trump winning the 2024 election is set to drastically change the future of Lava Ridge Energy and many other government overreach schemes. Here is a brief history of the Lava Ridge project. The Lava Ridge wind energy project was submitted to the Bureau of Land Management in 2020, with plans that massively outgrew most other wind energy sites in the United States. Almost 200,000 acres of federal, state, and privately owned land would be occupied by 400 wind turbines taller than the Seattle Space Needle. The local outrage was understandable. Public comments, frustrated citizens, and legislation opposing the project all ensued, but the project continued forward. The federal government obstinately ignored the protests of locally af-
2024 Election Results
Former President Donald Trump won a historical second term as President. He is only the second individual to win nonconsecutive terms as U.S. President. President Trump won 312 Electorial Votes (only needed 270) and 31 states. He also won the popular vote by about 4 million votes.
Republicans gained 3 seats in the Senate to take the majority with 52 seats. The House is expected to remain in the hands of the Republicans, but a few of races are yet to be fully counted.
Here in Idaho, Republicans gained 3 seats in the legislature with the defeat of Senator Rick Just (D-Boise) and Representative Nate Roberts (D-Pocatello). District 26 Representative Ned Burns (D-Bellevue) was also defeated by Mike Pohanka (R) with 51% of the votes (just over 500 votes). Jack Nelsen held on to his seat with the same amount of votes. Laurie Lickley (R) was unable to unseat Senator Ron Taylor (D) - 44% to 46% - and Independent candidate Kala Tate took 10% of the votes. District 24 stayed all Republican.
Idaho voters (and voters in five other states) decisively rejected ballot measures that would have brought ranked choice voting to future elections. Proposition 1 (the so call "Open Primary" proposition) received just 30% yes votes state wide (about 80% of voters in Gooding, Camas & Lincoln voted against Proposition 1). Meanwhile, the Constitutional ammendment to prevent non-citizens from voting in Idaho elections passed with a nearly 2/3 majority.
In local elections, Camas County passed two supplemental school levies with over 60% approval. Voters in Gooding and Lincoln counties voted in favor of the Gooding Jt. SD #231 Levy (61%), but voted against the Jerome Jt. SD #261 Levy (60%). This levy passed in Jerome County with 54% support.
fected communities and citizens. In June, the BLM announced it would still move forward with the project, on a smaller scale, reduced by almost 50%, despite the concerns of Idahoans. The case for the Lava Ridge wind energy project may have finally met its match, as the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 section 106 comes into play. Section 106 requires federal agencies “to consider the effects on historic properties of projects.” If a project affects historic properties a Section 106 review is required, giving...

So... You Want to be a Ham Radio Operator?
Learn all about ham radios and why they work when everything else fails in a 2-part series starting with "So, You Want to be a Ham Radio Operator" on Thursday, November 14, from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at Town Center West, 116 S River Street in Hailey, Idaho.
Long time operator and instructor Joe Yelda has taught and certified over 300 individuals in more than 35 years as an operator and enjoys chatting with people all over the world. He will be joined by Todd and Ellen Mandeville who will share a slide show of their sailing trip from Mexico to New Zealand with a ham radio as their only form of communication.
“Ham radios are amazing,” commented Kristin Fletcher, the Hailey library’s programs and community engagement manager, “Most people don’t realize that after Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana in 2005 ham radios were the only functioning communication devices in 100 square miles around New Orleans. Hospitals, some emergency responders and the Red Cross depended on them for over a week. Plus, nowadays about 30% of operators are women!”
Then, if you want to go all in, attend the free, hands-on "Ham Radio Operator Workshop" on Saturday, November 16, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Town Center West. Joe will again be joined by Todd and Ellen and demonstrate how to choose and use an affordable ham radio, explain how repeaters work, share information about the local club, and much more. In addition, they will go over how to study to become a certified operator and where to take the test.

Where Should My Teacher Travel?
Have you ever wanted to walk the Great wall of China in Asia? It would be fun to walk such an old and historic landmark. My teacher should go to Asia.
First, there are many cool things to see in Asia. The world's tallest building and the tallest mountain, Mt Everest. Mount Everest is 29,032 feet above sea level.. Also, you can go see the Great Wall of China. The Great Wall of China is 13,171 miles. My teachers can see so many things in Asia like the world's tallest structure. The tallest building in the world is called the Burj Khalifa and is 2,717 feet high. When she's there, I hope she has fun. Next, while she is there my teacher could go walk or drive across some very unique bridges. First, the longest bridge in the world is in China. It is the Danyang–Kunshan Grand Bridge and is 540, 682 long. There is a high speed railroad that goes on it. You could ride on the train. Another neat bridge is the Rainbow Bridge in Tokyo. It is a suspension bridge and looks like it would be fun to cross.

Lastly, there are a lot of yummy foods to eat in Asia. For example you can eat sushi, tempura, and noodles in Japan. In China, you could try Peking Duck, dim sum, and hot pot. Try some different foods and have fun to with it!
I really want her to have fun going to Asia with the entire class would be super exciting!
In conclusion, that is why my teacher should go to Asia visit some neat places and eat some really good food .

Karen Elaine (Stephens) Storey passed peacefully into the next life on Monday, October 21, 2024, at Ashley Manor in Jerome, Idaho. She was 85 years old. Karen was born May 31, 1939, in Ogden, Utah, to L. Zack and Helen (Gravis) Stephens. She was the first child born into this family and was later followed by her brother, Larry, and her twin sisters. Judy and Julie.
Karen loved her family and had a happy childhood. She very much enjoyed her siblings, and especially liked looking after the twins, as she was 6 years old when they were born. She was a natural caregiver, and always loved being around children. Her own children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were her greatest joy. She also had many lifelong friends.

Karen met her “Huckleberry”, Harold Lawrence “Huck” Storey on a blind date that had been set up by Huck’s good friend, Rex Fuller. Their first date was dinner and a movie. Karen and Huck often went dancing at the Hermitage Inn in Huntsville, Utah. They were married March 30, 1956. Huck was the love of her life, and she missed him terribly when he died after 39 years of marriage in 1995. Karen became a widow at the age of 55.
Harold and Karen lived in Ogden Valley for about half of their married life. They were blessed with 5 of their 6 children while living in the Valley: Steve, Mike, Joe, Elaine, and Will. Kate was born after they had moved to Gooding, Idaho, and she brought lots of joy and fun to the family. Karen missed the mountains of her beloved Valley, but she grew to really love Gooding and called it home. She lived in Gooding for many years, where she built a business cleaning homes. Karen enjoyed visiting with her clients as she worked.
While Karen was raised in the city, she loved living in the country. She loved farm life. Raising her family was always her top concern. She was an excellent and loving mother and was always so proud of each of her children. Aside from taking care of her family she loved to read books, she enjoyed picnics and being in the mountains. She liked to crochet, sew, and oil paint. She loved long walks, music, and being active in the LDS Church, where she held many callings, mostly working with children and youth. When she became a grandmother, she felt blessed to spend time with her grandchildren, and later on with her great grandchildren. Karen truly enjoyed the noise and playfulness of little children; their antics always made her smile.
Later in life, Karen married Thomas Kenney. They moved to Twin Falls, Idaho, where they bought a home and lived for several years. They had many good times traveling and enjoying life together. Eventually, Tom and Karen divorced, and Karen remained in her home in Twin Falls until she moved into an assisted living facility in Wendell, Idaho.
Karen was a ‘behind the scenes’ kind of person. She was always there taking care of everyone, making sure things ran smoothly, making everyone feel loved and special. She had a wonderful smile, an infectious laugh, and a true gift for nurturing. She was always described as being kind and loving, though she was also lots of fun, and sometimes a little feisty. She had an incredible inner strength and handled every challenge that life gave to her with dignity and grace.
Karen was preceded in death by her beloved parents, L. Zack and Helen Stephens; her sister, Julie; her brother, Larry; and her husband, Harold. She is survived by her sister, Judy (Lee) Linford, of Plain City, Utah; her children, Steven (Roxanne) Storey, of Buhl, Idaho; Michael (Julie) Storey, of Fairfield, Idaho; Elaine (Brian) Davis of Hagerman, Idaho; Joe (Nancy) Storey of Gooding, Idaho; Will (Debbey) Storey, of Unity, Oregon; and Kate (Jon) Sweet of Tyler, Minnesota; 16 special grandchildren: Adrea, Samantha, Tisa, Karen, Jenny, April, Kyle, Scott, Holli, Kevin, Korbin, Beau, Ethan, Dylan, Eva, and Sylvia, and 28 much loved great grandchildren.
The family wishes to express their many thanks to the staffs of Stonebridge Assisted Living in Wendell, Idaho; Ashley Manor Lincoln in Jerome, Idaho, and Visions Hospice for the loving and compassionate care that Karen has received these last years and months of her life as she suffered with a cruel disease.
Funeral services were held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Gooding, Idaho, on Monday, November 4, 2024. Grave dedication followed at the Elmwood Cemetery in Gooding, Idaho. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.farnsworthortuary.com

Pat James Bennett
Pat James Bennett reunited with his love, Vickie, on November 4, 2024 when he passed away at his home in Hill City at the age of 70.
Pat was born May 13, 1954, in Jerome, Idaho, to Emma and Elmer Bennett, the 5th of six children; Jack, Nels, Rollie, Dina, and Christy. The family spent the winters in Wendell and the remainder of the year was spent on the 3rd generation homestead farm in Hill City. Pat played Basketball for Wendell and Football for Camas.

It was in Wendell that he met the love of his life, Vickie Kimbrough. They married June 6, 1972 shortly after graduation and celebrated 51 years before Vickie passed away from cancer last year. They had four daughters; Jenni, Jandi, Maggi and Chelsi; 8 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.
Pat and Vickie lived in Hill City where he farmed his family homestead. His happy place was up on Bennett Mountain with a chainsaw in his hand or with binoculars watching and calling in the elk. He was an amazing craftsman who carved everything from custom made gun stocks, log furniture, kid's toys, totem poles, to statues of trappers and native American figures. He was a man of little words, but showed his love by actions and generosity. He was a quiet protector, loyal to all that were in his circle, and loved being a Papa most of all. He was preceded in death by his wife Vickie; parents, Elmer and Emma Bennett, and siblings Dina Smith, Rollie Bennett, and Jack Bennett. Naomi M. Floyd
Naomi M. Floyd, 91, a resident of Boise (formerly Gooding) passed away October 31, 2024 at Shaw Mountain of Cascadia in Boise. She was born March 5, 1933 to Earl R. Hine and Hilma Elizabeth Roddy in Kimberly, Idaho.

Naomi was raised in Twin Falls, spent her primary school years in Twin Falls until she graduated High School in 1951. She continued her education at Links Business School. Later she found employment at Idaho Power in Gooding prior to marrying Chet Floyd on July 1, 1954 in Elko, Nevada.
After moving to Alaska for a short time, the two moved back to Idaho.
Naomi was very active in the Gooding American Legion Auxiliary serving as President. She served as a dispatcher for the Gooding Police Department when Chet was Chief of Police. Through the years Naomi had a variety of jobs outside the home, mainly in sales.
Her greatest accomplishment in my mind was her role as a mother to both Larry and Janet.
She loved to camp, garden, travel, take long walks and spend time with many friends and family. She was kind, funny, thoughtful teaching her children the importance of respect and good manners.
She was the best mother we could have asked for and we will miss her dearly.
She is survived by her daughter - Janet Floyd (Tom Christiansen).
She was preceded in death by her spouse – Chet T. Floyd; her parents; and son - Larry Floyd.
Graveside funeral service was held at the Elmwood Cemetery on Wednesday, November 6, 2024. The family requests you plant some flowers in her memory or give to your favorite charity. Funeral arrangements by Demaray Funeral Service.

an opportunity for affected and concerned communities to share their voice on the matter.
On August 9, 2024 the Idaho State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) formally terminated its consultation with the BLM due to “overwhelming opposition to the project demonstrated by area residents, local elected officials, the Idaho State Legislature, Idaho’s Congressional Delegation, Idaho’s Native American tribes, and constituent communities, including the national voice of the Japanese American Community.”
In September Idaho’s Congressional Delegation wrote to the Chair of the Federal ACHP expressing their concern over the project's impact on the Minidoka National Historic Site, saying: “As you may recall, you were even asked about the impact of the proposed Lava Ridge project on the Minidoka National Historic Site during your confirmation process, to which you responded that 'the Advisory Council would urge the lead federal agency to carefully consider the views of these stakeholders as part of its consulting process.' Unfortunately, the views of these stakeholders—Minidoka survivors, descendants, and allies, along with the vast majority of Idahoans—have been largely disregarded.”
Sen. Jim Risch of Idaho said, “Today’s decision by the ACHP to terminate consultation on Lava Ridge is a win for Idahoans and underscores that this project is obstructive and entirely unwanted. This battle is not over, and I am committed to fighting until the Biden-Harris administration understand the people of Idaho unequivocally do not want Lava Ridge.”
