Special Flight to Honor Veterans

Washington D.C. is home to a dozen or more memorials in honor of our veterans. From the World Wars to Vietnam, these monuments remind all of us of the sacrifices made to keep our nation free from the tyranny of others. But, many of our veterans never have the opportunity to visit these memorials. The Honor Flight Network is a national nonprofit organization comprised of 125 independent hubs across the U.S. These hubs and their volunteers donate their time and talents to coordinate flights, bus trips, welcome home ceremonies, and thousands of phone calls – all with the common goal to honor our nation’s heroes with a trip of a lifetime. Honored veterans always travel free of charge, thanks to generous donations to the HFSN organization. Currently, Idaho does not have an active hub, but that doesn't prevent our Idaho veterans from benefiting from the Honor Flights. In October, Fairfield's own Ron Chapman traveled with his daughter, Erin Bowden, to Washington D.C. along with other veterans served by Honor Flight Southern Nevada. Erin and her husband, Nick, found Honor Flights while looking for a local veterans charity to work with. Nick was selected as a guardian for the April flight earlier this year and after witnessing his guardian experience, Erin knew she wanted give her dad the veterans experience. "I was able to connect with the Founding Director and explained to her that Idaho does not have an active branch but I would love for my dad to be able to experience what they do. Our applications for HFSN: Mission 20 in October were accepted and she made it happen! Dad is the first veteran from Idaho to participate in a flight with the Southern Nevada chapter. It was such a blessing and inspiration to get to witness these veterans seeing our Nation's Capital and be welcomed and honored every step of the way." The members of this trip were able to visit (despite the rain) the US National WWII War Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Korean Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Iowa Jima Memorial, Marine Corps Memorial, Air Force Memorial, Pentagon and 9/11 Memorial, and the National Archives. Honor Flight Network was created in 2005. While initially focused on America’s World War II veterans, Honor Flight Network has expanded its mission to include those who served during the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and veterans of any service era who are critically ill. HFSN transports approximately 22,000 veterans annually, and has flown nearly 275,000 veterans to Washington, D.C. since its inception.
