Special Flight to Honor Veterans

Washington D.C. is home to a dozen or more memorials in honor of our veterans. From the World Wars to Vietnam, these monuments remind all of us of the sacrifices made to keep our nation free from the tyranny of others. But, many of our veterans never have the opportunity to visit these memorials. The Honor Flight Network is a national nonprofit organization comprised of 125 independent hubs across the U.S. These hubs and their volunteers donate their time and talents to coordinate flights, bus trips, welcome home ceremonies, and thousands of phone calls – all with the common goal to honor our nation’s heroes with a trip of a lifetime. Honored veterans always travel free of charge, thanks to generous donations to the HFSN organization. Currently, Idaho does not have an active hub, but that doesn't prevent our Idaho veterans from benefiting from the Honor Flights. In October, Fairfield's own Ron Chapman traveled with his daughter, Erin Bowden, to Washington D.C. along with other veterans served by Honor Flight Southern Nevada. Erin and her husband, Nick, found Honor Flights while looking for a local veterans charity to work with. Nick was selected as a guardian for the April flight earlier this year and after witnessing his guardian experience, Erin knew she wanted give her dad the veterans experience. "I was able to connect with the Founding Director and explained to her that Idaho does not have an active branch but I would love for my dad to be able to experience what they do. Our applications for HFSN: Mission 20 in October were accepted and she made it happen! Dad is the first veteran from Idaho to participate in a flight with the Southern Nevada chapter. It was such a blessing and inspiration to get to witness these veterans seeing our Nation's Capital and be welcomed and honored every step of the way." The members of this trip were able to visit (despite the rain) the US National WWII War Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Korean Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Iowa Jima Memorial, Marine Corps Memorial, Air Force Memorial, Pentagon and 9/11 Memorial, and the National Archives. Honor Flight Network was created in 2005. While initially focused on America’s World War II veterans, Honor Flight Network has expanded its mission to include those who served during the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and veterans of any service era who are critically ill. HFSN transports approximately 22,000 veterans annually, and has flown nearly 275,000 veterans to Washington, D.C. since its inception.

The Gooding Alternative Learning Center

Cam Carrico Agency, llc

by Ryon Pope, Principal

The Gooding Alternative Learning Center is now in its third year, having been in operation since August 2021. In that time, we have served over 50 students, past and present, and have graduated 15 in our first two years. Currently, we have just under 30 students enrolled. The purpose of the school is to help students with credit recovery and get them back on track for graduation in order to help them become productive and successful adults. The curriculum of the school is based on the Idaho state standards but is adapted and driven entirely by student needs. Our teachers, who rotate from the main high school building to the “GALC” throughout the day, constantly assess the needs of students and identify learning gaps to foster the academic growth and success of each student. This process works because of strong relationships and connections between the teachers and the students. The students at GALC are not “bad” kids, at all! Each of them is enrolled here for a variety of different reasons. For most of them, it’s just a better fit. We set expectations of good behavior, attendance, and academic engagement for each student and it’s great to see them grow as students and as young people. Overall, it’s a challenging and very rewarding experience for students, staff, and teachers to be a part of this great school.

Rachel Michelle Paul

December 22, 2010 ~ October 27, 2023 (age 12) Rachel Michelle Paul was born on Dec 22, 2010, to William M. Paul and Maurine L. Paul. She was born in Gooding, Idaho. She is number ten out of eleven children. She has been and will always be a light in her family's life. Her family felt very blessed to have had her in their lives for thirteen years. Her life was almost cut short twice during her first three years. Because of those experiences she lived her life to the fullest. Rachel loved doing everything her older sisters did. She participated in swimming, band, drama, singing, and dancing. She started swimming at the age of three and by the age of six she was winning first place in her age bracket in the Sage Brush Swimming League. As her coach, one time, she came up to me and told me she could swim butterfly and she wanted to. I said, "No you cannot. We haven't yet taught you how to do that." She said, "Yes I can!" so we put her in the 7yr - 8yr old race because they swim butterfly. Not only could she swim it correctly, but she won that race. She felt such joy out of racing and winning. When she was ten the swim team would do kicking practice and she would beat her older brother and older cousin who were 17 at the time. She had such a great kick, we said she had a motor connected to her. She thought she was cool and loved to gloat about being faster than them. She was so excited to get to go into high school so she could win those races too. Even though she was only a middle school swimmer, she was so close to winning the races against her high school team-mates. Any of her siblings who went to do stuff at the high school, had to wait until their freshman year. She got to start in the preforming band as a percussionist at the age of 11. She loved getting to be in the band and beat on whatever she was told to play. She loved to tease people, but never in a malicious way. Always, just for a good laugh. If the person got hurt, she felt sad and was very quick to apologize. She loved to sing and dance and she learned to do the splits just for the plays she performed in. She also was a member of the top vocal choir group and was very frustrated by the fact that she was only 12 so no one would listen to her. She was very capable of being a good leader. Her only hang up was her age. She loved everyone but, some people she loved from a greater distance. If she felt comfortable, she was very funny and quick witted. If she was not comfortable, she would fade into the background. Her favorite place to be was the Temple. She was there once a week unless the Temple was closed. It was so important to her to help her family to be together forever. She graduated this life on the 27th of Oct 2023 and was very happy to have passed all of her tests of mortality successfully. She is survived by her parents William Paul and Maurine Paul. Her Grandmothers Connie Ray, Marsha Paul and Grandparents Ron Kendall and Wendy Kendall. Siblings Joseph Paul (Kirstin Paul), Ammon Paul (Cara Paul), Mindy Ford (Robert Ford), Leland Paul (Carissa Paul), Jessica Grush (Taylen Grush), Jonathan Paul (Kendra Paul), Timothy Paul, Elizabeth Paul, Alexandrea Paul, Sarah Paul. As well as 9 nieces and nephews and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins. She is preceded by her Grandpa Merlin Paul and her Grandpa Ernest Ray. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Gooding. Burial followed at the Elmwood Cemetery in Gooding. Funeral services are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service – Gooding Chapel. Condolences, memories and photos can be shared with the family by following the obituary link at www.demarayfuneralservice.com

Cup of Tee

© They claim that the

Northwest had advanced civilization prior to the East Coast. Maybe it stems from one of the theories that the continents were connected. It may have been that countries were looking for riches and didn't want to be robbed by pirates. At any rate, ten years ago in Montana, a group of archeologists during a 50 foot dig, found copper wire. This wire indicated a phone system approximately 153 years ago. The news was widespread. An Italian, Antonio Meucci was credited with inventing the telephone in 1849. A Frenchman, Charles Bourseul was given credit in 1854. The United States gave Alexander Graham Bell the patent on the phone in 1876. Puzzling questions: "Did other countries recognize what we as Americans did?" or better yet, "Did the Americans recognize other countries efforts?" Shortly after the discovery of the copper wire in Montana, another archeological dig was completed in Oregon. Their dig at 30 feet found copper wire which

Serving with all Gentleness & Compassion...

by Tee Hurd

dated back 165 years, beating Montana's copper wire by 15 years. Truly noted since Oregon is closer to the coast. With everyone researching the new found copper wires, a precedent was in order to prove whether the East Coast was actually inhabited first, and whether it's technology was second to the northwest. A few years ago, during a dig in Fairfield, a farmer was digging a new foundation for a barn located near the foothills. His dig was about 80 feet wide and 30 feet deep. The archaeologist crew which had made the discovery of copper wire figured Fairfield was in line with the other existing phone lines discovered in the Northwest. They immediately came to Fairfield. The dig site was investigated with a fine tooth comb. Absolutely nothing was found! Not a wire one! The conclusion was that Idaho had already gone wireless prior to the Montana and Oregon discoveries. When one hears the phase: "To the Moon and Back," one can expect that something is a long ways away, or it is a little out there. Maybe that is to say about the Northwest and copper wires indicating an early phone system. Or maybe??? the story??? hasn't been dug deep enough? But, in all truth, they are currently laying fiber optics beside the Craters of the Moon along Highway 20/26/93. The phase "To the Moon and Back" is actually happening. Only in Idaho. Maybe someday they will say, "Huh, Idaho really did go wireless." This is my "Cup of Tee" two wired for reception.
