Idaho Power Seeks Rate Increase

The Idaho Public Utilities Commission will host customer hearings in early December to take testimony on an application from Idaho Power to change the rates it charges customers. The utility said its application focuses on recovering costs associated with infrastructure investments and labor expenses that were not included in the company’s last rate case. If the commission approves the request, the average Idaho residential customer using 950 kilowatt hours per month would see a monthly bill increase of approximately $7.48. The commission can approve, deny or modify the application.

Those interested in submitting testimony for the record can do so by attending a customer hearing in Twin Falls or in Boise. The Twin Falls hearing will be held December 2nd at the Twin Falls American Legion Hall (447 Seastrom Street) from 4 to 7 p.m. Those interested in listening to the hearing can do so by calling 1-415-655-0001 and enter meeting number 2861 889 4514 when prompted. The Boise hearing will be held on December 3rd at the Idaho Public Utilities Commission (11331 W. Chinden Boulevard, Building 8, Suite 201-A) from 4 to 7 p.m. In-person attendance is required to submit testimony. To listening to this hearing, call 1-415-655-0001 and enter meeting number 2869 194 4770 when prompted.

The commission is accepting written comments on Idaho Power’s application until Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2024. Comments are required to be filed through the commission’s website or by e-mail unless computer access is not available. To submit comments using the commission website, please visit puc.idaho.gov and click on the “Case Comment Form” link on the upper left side of the page. New Curriculum Option Available to Idaho Classrooms

Districts and charters in Idaho now have access to additional ways to support core classroom curriculum with supplementary resources from PragerU Kids, available for use free of charge.

PragerU Kids lesson plans are developed to cover multiple K-12 educational standards in lessons that are engaging, interactive and teach foundational knowledge in subjects ranging from civics to financial literacy. (All instructional materials are available to the public online.)

Additionally, the Idaho Legislature’s 2024 House Concurrent Resolution 25 calls for schools to adopt age-appropriate Holocaust educational resources. As part of the informational package, PragerU Kids has provided the Idaho Department of Education with newly developed Holocaust resources that help meet the goals of this resolution.

“Offering Idaho districts and charters supplementary options that work in their classrooms means making a variety of resources available for use, and is work we have engaged in for nearly two years,” said Superintendent of Public Instruction Debbie Critchfield. “Local boards choose educational materials that are right for their schools and communities and this option from PragerU Kids is another way for school leaders to make informed decisions as they seek ways to best support student learning.”

This new curriculum is not without its detractors. Just two months ago, a group in Boise formed a nonprofit organization called the Council for Holocaust Awareness of Idaho (CHAI) to combat what they call "misinformation." The executive director and co-founder, Kali Cusimano, claims that materials from sources like PragerU often lack the necessary context, which can lead to misunderstandings and harmful narratives about the Holocaust and antisemitism.

For context... Kali Cusimano is a member of Congregation Ahavath Beth Israel, a liberal/progressive Jewish congregation in Boise. Dennis Prager (founder of PragerU) was an outspoken supporter of Soviet Jews facing repression during the 1960s and 70s. In 1983, he published a highly acclaimed book " Why the Jews? The Reason for Antisemitism." He has also served on the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Council.

Cup of Tee by Tee Hurd

Have you ever had to use your own judgement to finish some work whereas you weren’t given any information to finish according to your supervisor’s wish? Upon your completion you were asked, “Why did you do this job the way you did it? It is not what I wanted.”

Basically, you have become a member of the “Know Nothing Club.” Generally there are at least two people, including yourself, that are two steps below the “Know Nothing Club” entry level.

At this level point you have to be given some information just to still know nothing. Zero knowledge is still zero knowledge.

I have been at the position of the Know Nothing crew. I processed my information to do the job as given to me in the initial first instructions. And, of course, no one tells you of changes or “clued” you in as to the final approaches of the job at hand. I have been thinking I could start myself a business of Knowing Nothing. I could appoint myself CEO. Of course, I would need a manager so I could tell nothing to. Employees would follow.

A secretary could work by not writing down business protocol, forget to pass on phone messages, and collect dues from all other members joining and not needing to know anything.

The Know Nothing team is like mushroom growers only in the fact that you are stuck in the dark and dine on meals of manure, politely speaking. Or you could be like some of those fellows in weird cold resistant costumes on the dark side of the moon.

They don’t see the light either.

In the “Know Nothing Club” you could come home from visiting somewhere and find your whole family has moved and you knew nothing of the plans (sad circumstances). Where’s the info?

With the rapid use of cellphones and the use of text, one would think that you would be on information overload and have to reject some of the information. It seems to me the old postal system with stamps and letters kept you more informed. At least you can process all that worthless information.

Does the right hand know what the left hand is doing? Depends on whether they were sharing the same mitten, suggesting the thumb is universal.

Maybe some people prefer not to know anything. It gives them a false sense of control. Or maybe they don’t have to exercise responsibility.

To me, I’d rather be kept out of the dark and be in the “Know.” It enables me to do my job a little more efficiently.

I can still take pride in what I do. I can use good judgement in finishing a task. I don’t have to second guess what’s happening or what’s going on.

If you are one of those who are in the “Know Nothing Club,” I am trying to work things in your favor. For ten dollars you can join me for not knowing anything. Since I will be the CEO, I will not know where your money came from, I will not be able to tell you what I’m doing with your money, and I’ll give you what you expect - to Know Nothing.

This is my “Cup of Tee” on hold to know.

Martin Grant Peterson

Martin "Marty" Grant Peterson, age 71, of Gooding, Idaho, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2024, at home, surrounded by his beloved family. Born on October 28, 1952, in Hailey, Idaho, he was the son of Cleo and Sybille Peterson.

Marty grew up in Carey and Jerome, Idaho, and graduated from Carey High School in 1971. In his early years, he worked side by side with his father and brothers in the hay-hauling business, learning the value of hard work, community, and camaraderie. This foundation shaped Marty’s lifelong commitment to supporting his family and giving back to those around him.

In 1972, Marty was drafted into the Army, becoming the 3rd man drafted from Idaho during the Vietnam War era. He completed boot camp at Fort Ord, California, and served as a Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic in Korea. Known for his skill and dedication, Marty was awarded multiple honors, including the National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Rifle Sharpshooter Medal, and Army Good Conduct Medal, before being honorably discharged in 1975.

Upon his return to Idaho, Marty built a career marked by hard work and reliability, taking on roles with Blaine County Road and Bridge, Neyman Chevrolet, Western Construction, the City of Ketchum, and Erwin Excavation. But his true calling came when he started his own trucking company, where he found independence, fulfillment, and pride in serving his community.

Beyond his career, Marty embraced life to its fullest with his wife, Gail, by his side. Together, they explored Idaho’s stunning landscapes in their Ranger, finding joy in every adventure, whether hunting, camping, or taking scenic drives. Marty had a gift for bringing laughter into every gathering, known for his humor and ability to befriend everyone he met. He was the life of the party, a true jokester who could turn any moment into a cherished memory.

As a father, Marty passed on his love of the outdoors to his children, guiding them through camping and fishing trips and teaching them to respect the land. His lessons on respect and kindness extended far beyond the outdoors, as he raised his children to be compassionate, hardworking, and community-minded individuals.

Nothing brought Marty more joy than time spent with his grandchildren. To them, he was not only "Grandpa Marty" or "Papa Marty" but a source of love and playfulness. He celebrated their accomplishments, and taught them the value of family, laughter, and generosity.

Marty is survived by his loving wife, Gail; his children, Jennifer (Chelsey) Nill, Katelyn (Adam) Papineau, Jason (Hayden) Peterson, and Karilee (Brian) Cavazos; stepchildren, Leslie (Derek) Phinney, Ryan (Aaron) Bronson, and Kellie England; and his treasured grandchildren, who adored their Grandpa/Papa Marty.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Cleo and Sybille Peterson; his sister, Patricia Sparks; and his brother, Tom Peterson, as well as other beloved family members who undoubtedly welcomed him home.

A celebration of Marty’s life was held on November 2, 2024, at the Shoshone Baptist Church. Family and friends enjoyed a potluck dinner as they gather to remember Marty’s life and legacy.

As a family, we find comfort in knowing Marty is now free from pain. His memory will live on in our hearts, and he will be forever missed but never forgotten.

Larry Leon Wellard

Larry Leon Wellard, 81, a resident of Bliss, passed away on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 at his home in Bliss. Larry was born in Hailey, Idaho on July 28, 1943. He was the third of four children born to Elwin "Bud" and Eunice Wellard.

The Wellard Family lived in Shoshone until Larry was in second grade. They bought a ranch on the Wood River north of Shoshone where the kids grew up and made some of their fondest family memories.

When Larry was in high school, the Wellard's moved to Wendell. Larry was not interested in school, so at 17, with his mother's permission, he joined the Navy. He served four years as a machinist mate on the USS Caliente (a fleet oiler), where he spent much of his time below deck desalinating water.

Larry returned to Wendell and took a job on a sheep ranch. In March of 1965, he met Carmen Bollar the sister of a fellow ranch hand, Lorenzo Bollar, and in August of the same year, they were married.

In September 1967 the couple took a drive to San Francisco to pick up their first child, a tiny, adorable girl who they named Carrie. Shortly thereafter the family moved to a small village in Idaho called Tuttle where Larry farmed for a local professional cowboy named Bob A. Robinson. In 1969 their son Victor was born, followed by Lori in September 1970, and in August 1972 Shelley arrived, completing their family.

In 1973 Larry and Carmen were able to buy the farm they had been living on and some milk cows. They raised cows, and crops, and kids for the next 20 years. It was hard but rewarding work. After the children grew up and moved away, Larry sold his cows and worked as a farmer for a local dairyman, Frank Veenstra, until his brother, Kenneth, convinced Larry to join him in a fertilizer manufacturing venture. In an old abandoned shop, they built their own equipment, and through trial and error successfully made an Iron-based fertilizer they called SulFeGro.

Larry retired in the early 2000's due to waning health. Always the farmer, he continued to care for his property: gardening, mowing, plating, and canning. When he was no longer able to do more physical work. He took up reading books and putting together jigsaw puzzles. He loved western dime novels and the Bible.

Throughout his life, Larry followed his dreams and was guided by his beliefs. He loved the Lord, his family, his country, and the land. He accepted the Lord at age eight and his relationship with his savior was central to his life. He was a deacon and AWANA leader in the Bliss Community Church for most of his adult life. He taught his children to work hard and live godly lives. He passed on his values to his children and grandchildren including the idea that success has nothing to do with money. He was patriotic: serving in the Navy and voting in every election. Larry was an active member of the surrounding communities. He nurtured plants and animals; and enjoyed camping, fishing, and all of nature.

Larry lived fearlessly, worked tirelessly, laughed always, and died peacefully. He is survived by his wife - Carmen; his brother – Kenneth; and his sister - Verna, four children - Carrie Witt, Victor (Lisa) Wellard, Lori (Darrin) Demaray, and Shelley (Jeff) Adams, as well as 22 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren, who miss him greatly.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, November 8, 2024 at 11:00 am at the Bliss Community Church in Bliss. Burial will be in the Hagerman Cemetery in Hagerman.

Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service – Gooding Chapel. Condolences, memories and photos can be shared with the family by following the obituary link at www.demarayfuneralservice.com
