State Football Championship Games
Last Friday, the Camas Mushers took the win over North Gem 42 to 36, and the Dietrich Blue Devils took out Council 60 to 38. These two teams will off in Dietrich this Friday at 6:00 p.m. The winner will likely play Carey the following weekend. Also this Friday, November 5th, the Senators will host Timberlake in the second round of the 3A football playoffs. Christmas Tree Permits On Sale
The Holidays are fast approaching and permits for cutting Christmas trees for personal family use on the Sawtooth National Forest will be available beginning Friday, November 12, 2021, and will be valid until December 25, 2021. The cost of this year’s permit is $10. This permit will allow a family to choose and cut one tree up to 20 feet tall. There is a limit of one tree per family or organization. Forest Service offices are offering curbside pickup only. Permits will be available at the following locations throughout the Sawtooth National Forest and surrounding areas:

Find the complete list of applicable regions in Notice 2021-55 on IRS.gov. The relief applies to farmers affected by drought that happened between September 1, 2020, and August 31, 2021. This relief generally applies to capital gains realized by eligible farmers and ranchers on sales of livestock held for draft, dairy, or breeding purposes. Sales of other livestock — such as those raised for slaughter or held for sporting purposes — or poultry aren't eligible. Details are in Notice 2006-82 on IRS.gov.

In some places it may be necessary to crosscountry ski or use a snow machine to access cutting areas.” There are a few areas that are off limits for cutting Christmas trees. These include campgrounds, administrative sites, ski areas, summer home sites and organization camps. “People will be provided with information when they purchase their permit,” said Thomas. “This will include maps and rules for cutting trees.” Thomas advised people to be well prepared when going into the forest to cut their tree. “Weather and road conditions can change quite rapidly at this time of the year. We encourage people to take extra food and clothing and let someone know where you plan to go and when you plan to return.” Additionally, in support of Every Kid Outdoors, the Sawtooth National Forest will offer one free Christmas tree permit to fourth graders who present a valid paper or durable Every Kid Outdoors pass. The student must be present at the time the permit is issued and must be picked up before you cut your tree. The free Christmas tree permit will not be available at local vendors but is available at all Sawtooth National Forest offices in Twin Falls, Burley, Ketchum, Stanley, and Sawtooth National Recreation Area headquarters. The U.S. Forest Service is among the federal agencies that support the Administration’s Every Kid Outdoors initiative, a nationwide call to action to build the next generation of conservationists. The initiative provides a free pass to all fourth grade students who first go to: https://everykidoutdoors.gov/fourth_graders.htm and complete the application process. Students can either use a paper pass or can redeem the paper pass for a durable pass at select federal lands. In my current job the combines came in and combined the ears of corn in 800 acres to use as high moisture corn, or in other words, the corn seeds to be ground into grain. Remaining was the stocks and leaves of the corn. We are following the combines with choppers and chopping the remains to make silage or feed for the cattle operation. Since the corn had to be allowed to dry down to combine, we were chopping dry matter. In order to pack the silage we have to add water. In the recent disaster in Calwell with a milk factory fire, the milk in tanks had to be gotten rid of to keep dairies operational. The cattle company obtained some of the milk which we poured on our dry silage for packing purposes (130 tons per day). Todays question that everyone asks, "Is Tee milking his job? From an actor's standpoint, is Tee is making us laugh by putting milk on corn... flakes?" Don't tell my boss but I'm milking my job for all it's worth (since I'm the packing operator).

Did you ever wonder about the phrase "Milking It?" To milk is to draw something from something else. The product drawn from a cow, goat or sheep is labeled as milk. In milking a cow, one is utilizing the cow to the fullest advantage at hand (it may also become food hamburger to eat). In early years of the English Empire, one was taxed on every means of production in order to get revenue to fight wars, expand its conquests, or to provide minamal maintainence of its workers. One may of been taxed on a certain amount of milk weight. According to the tax collectors, one should have paid a little more to compensate for the shortages. The servants were charged a little bit more (drawn a little or milked). They were being milked or taken advanage of for their short falls. The same goes for today's society. If one is milking it, so to say one is taking advantage to get as much out of something as possible. This can relate to sympathy, kindness, respect or financial gain. Getting more for less effort could be the workplace. Another form of "milking it" is for actors to get the audience to laught or clap (involving reaction).

Marilynn Gossi
Marilynn Gossi passed away October 6, 2021, at Stonebridge Assisted Living. She was born April 25, 1933, at Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Jim and Neva Krueger. Marilynn was raised in Boise where she met Phillip (Babe) Gossi and they got married. In 1956 they moved to Hagerman spending their remaining lives here together. Marilynn was always there to help us kids in all our endeavors as well as help others in time of need. She enjoyed growing up riding horses and continued riding until she no longer was able. She also enjoyed water skiing, four wheeling, camping. She loved living on the farm and taking care of all the animals, changing the water, and mostly loved her cats. After Babe retired, they spent time driving throughout Idaho and northern Nevada, their most frequent stop was Jackpot. Marilynn is proceeded in death by her husband of 70 years, Phillip Gossi and her parents Jim and Neva Krueger. Marilynn is survived by Daughters Sharon (Allen) Sutton of Ola, Idaho Sandra (Russell) Lemoyne of Hagerman, Son Philip (Nancy) Gossi Hagerman. Grandkids Clay (Ginger) Sutton, Shannon (Luke) Conrad, Tanner (Kali) Lemoyne, Drew (Aubrie) Gossi, Amy Gossi. Great Grandkids Blake, Garrett and Ty Sutton, Abby and Allie Foruria, Karsen and Tanli Lemoyne, Hadlie and Brylie Gossi. Alvin the Cat. Salem "LaVern" Carpenter, 91, a resident of Shoshone, passed away on Thursday, October 28, 2021 peacefully in his home with loved ones by his side. Salem LaVern Carpenter, a black haired, blue eyed, 5 ft. 6-inch, 160-pound man was born to Salem Oras and Emily Almeda Carpenter March 22, 1930, on the homestead in Shoshone, Idaho. He was so small when he was born, he slept in a dresser drawer. His nickname was Tom (Tom Thumb). Even though he was only 5'6" his comment was "dynamite comes in small packages". He was privileged to ride his horse to school one mile south of his home. He was an avid horseman and hunter since early childhood. He would break and ride the horses no one else could or would. At the age of 17 he met the love of his life – Opal Joy Walker. Opal was a 5 ft. 2-inch, auburn hair, hazel eyes, 120-pound beauty from Superior, Nebraska. He stole her away from his good friend and they had a whirlwind courtship. They eloped to Elko, Nevada on August 17, 1947. The first job was at Sun Valley Idaho, working on the ski lifts and as a snow groomer. His brother-in-law introduced him to the Iron Workers Union 732. He spent 30 plus years building high rise towers, missile silos (Grand View), nuclear reactors (Hanford), dams (Hells Canyon, Dworshak, Anderson, Horse Thief). He also built bridges (King Hill Bridges spanning I-84 and the Malad, and most notable the Perrine Bridge). His talent was recognized early on and was advanced to foreman on most jobs. Because of his kindness, fairness and ability several crewmen became lifelong friends. Late in life he opted to start up a trucking business, Ace of Hearts Trucking, LLC. He is survived by: son – Tommy (Juliana) Carpenter of Glenns Ferry; daughter – Nancy (David) Lewis of Shoshone; and son – Randy (Janet) Carpenter of Shoshone; nine grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved his wife of 59 years Opal Joy Carpenter; his parents and siblings; and one grandchild – Patrick Carpenter. LaVern was always kind, thoughtful and generous to his fellow man. He always made time for his family or anyone in need. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, November 4, 2021, at 3:00 p.m. at the Shoshone Cemetery in Shoshone. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date. Funeral services are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service. Online Idaho Will Make College Available To Everyone
By Kurt Liebich, President, Idaho State Board of Education College of Eastern Idaho President Rick Aman is making a bold prediction about the trajectory of higher education in Idaho over the next decade: “I would say that half of the student population will be getting their training and education off of an online platform 10 years from now,” he said. In Idaho, that platform will be Online Idaho, a collaboration between state agencies and all eight public higher education institutions to build a digital campus of fully online learning opportunities and support. “We already have a robust set of career technical and academic courses available online from our institutions. As we work together across institutions, this portfolio grows – yielding more potential,” said Dr. Jonathan Lashley, Associate Chief Academic Office at the Idaho State Board of Education. “A common platform lets our institutions focus on what students ‘want to learn’ first because they share capacity in delivering course and degree options that can reach every Idahoan. This is what ‘systemness’ looks like and it presents great access and affordability to our education community.” Funded last year by Governor Brad Little’s Coronavirus Financial Advisory Committee via federal coronavirus relief funds, a course sharing portal is already in place for Online Idaho and will be improved through implementation and improvements over the academic year. “Right now, students can visit the Online Idaho website, review courses that are open for registration and pass through to an institution’s existing registration process,” Lashley said. “Once implementation is finished however, students will have one place to go to search, register and pay for online learning experiences available from Idaho’s colleges and universities.”
These features are available at online.idaho.edu and are targeted at the following audiences: Currently enrolled college students who need more flexible class schedules Residents who want to pursue college coursework but can’t easily access in-person classes because they live in rural or remote areas Adult learners with some college or career technical experience who want to finish earning a certificate or degree Dr. TJ Bliss, the Board’s Chief Academic Officer says Online Idaho will enable students to progress through and earn a certificate or degree no matter where they live, and they will be able to do so in ways that better fit on their own unique schedules. “Currently, students can only take courses when they are offered at their own institution, even if that occurs later than when the student really needs a course, and sometimes it happens out of sequence,” Bliss said. “With eight institutions involved, students will be able take common online courses from institutions when they need them, not just when the courses are available at their own institutions.” Last week, the State Board of Education approved two online Bachelor of Science cyber security-related programs; one at Boise State University, the other at Lewis-Clark State College, that will be available in collaboration with other Idaho institutions on Online Idaho. The goal is to start rolling out Online Idaho’s course sharing system later this fall and that students will increasingly find it to be a resource for maintaining momentum in their studies while also saving some money along the way. “It’s all about access and affordability,” said Board Vice President Dr. David Hill, who has spent considerable time working on and advocating for the program. “Online Idaho is one of the of initiatives the Board has taken to help Idahoans meet their educational and career goals. I think it will make a real difference because it will provide students an affordable option to move forward with their plans without forcing major disruptions to their lives.” After spending so much time taking online classes over the last 18 months, Bliss says, many students view online education differently than they did prior to the pandemic. “Students now value online instruction more than they did before. Many don’t want to do it fulltime, but now they know that they can learn and succeed in an online learning environment.” Bliss and Lashley expect to have Online Idaho’s digital campus completely built out by 2023, with new cross-institution degree or certificate programs being added regularly. They also envision scenarios where programs are created in partnership with employers and institutions both within and beyond Idaho. CEI President Aman, who co-chairs the Online Idaho Steering Committee, says the platform opens up affordable possibilities for Idaho residents from all walks of life. “We will be able to work with people who are working fulltime or have family commitments,” he said. “This is for everybody, not just those students who can afford to spend four or five years on a physical campus.”
