Gooding Seniors Partner with Jae Foundation

The Gooding School District has formed a strong partnership with The Jae Foundation and helping bring awareness to mental health. The Jae Foundation, known for its commitment to supporting mental health initiatives and providing resources for families in need, welcomed the students with open arms.

GHS took 96 seniors to Twin Falls to visit Jae’s Place. While there they heard the story of Jae Bing a young man who took his life. Students then moved through a hallway into the Jae’s Place store where students were able to pick out their very own Jae Boots. Students received these boots free of charge through generous donations as well as a partnership with GHS and Gear-Up.

The day also included a discussion where students committed to having bold conversations, and reaching out if ever in a negative place mentally. “I love life, but these boots help me stand a little taller and look out for those who may be struggling.” Said senior Alex Lopez.

“I think it’s really important that we talk about mental health openly,” said senior and student body president Dryson Patterson. “I feel more equipped to support my friends now and to recognize when someone might need help.”

The event concluded with a reflective circle where students committed to reaching out if ever they need help and being nimble enough to help those that may ask them for help.

As the seniors left the Jae Foundation, they carried with them a new pair of boots and a deeper understanding of the importance of mental health in their community. The collaboration between Gooding High School and the Jae Foundation stands as a testament to the power of youth engagement and having bold conversations with one another.

For more information about the Jae Foundation and how to get involved, visit their website or contact them directly.

Dear Camas County Resident,

I want to introduce myself as an eligible write-in candidate for Camas County Sheriff. I am running as an independent candidate to better serve the citizens of the county at the request of a few concerned citizens.

I just retired from the US Army in June 2024 after 39 years of military service. I have served from the rank of private to Colonel with duties as force protection officer, special agent, and commander in eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, where I was responsible for the safety and security of the populations for which I was assigned to protect. I also served as base commander of Orchard Combat Training Center, the largest Army National Guard Training Center in the US and Commanded the 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team. I have also served as a counterintelligence special agent and federal background investigator.

My education is a bachelor’s in criminal justice, master’s in business and organizational security management, and a master’s in military strategic studies.

I am not certified in Peace Officer Standards & Training Program (POST), nor have I personally served in an official law enforcement capacity, but I have extensive experience protecting populations and managing security forces and programs. I do, however, have the goal of becoming POST certified within 6 months, if the citizens of Camas County choose me to lead their sheriff’s office into the future.

If elected, I will visit each residence in the county within the first six months in office, to hear your concerns and issues regarding the future safety and security of our county.

I am a registered candidate but will not be on the ballot due to a filling issue. You can write me in on the ballot if you choose me to become your next county sheriff.

Thank you for your support. Dennis C Stitt Jr

Christopher Bernard Leader

Christopher Bernard Leader drew his tag for the Ultimate Hunt early Saturday, October 12th, 2024.

He lived his life large as the Lord intended and took nothing for granted. He was joyful, loving, and strived to serve others every day. His presence will be missed by all who knew him.

Christopher was born to Glenda Wetzstein on November 1st, 1978. From the start, he persevered and was determined to be a good man. He grew up in the Magic Valley and lived there his entire life. He graduated as a Buhl Indian in 1997. He was a proud Future Farmer of America with a Dairy background. He was a scholar during his school years and beyond, spending many hours researching and reading about many subjects. He never stopped learning. He was an adventurous cook, butcher, baker, pit master, gamer, mixologist, bookworm, mechanic, scholar, gunsmith, fisherman, hunter and outdoorsman.

a priority and was disappointed if he couldn't.

In June of 2024, Chris and Kristina had planned a Mexican Riviera Cruise to Celebrate 15 years of Marriage. However, his Mother Glenda expressed a desire to book more cabins so the whole family could join them on their "Second Honeymoon". Chris firmly told her "Not this cruise. This is for my Wife."

But after Glenda's passing in May of 2024, Chris decided he would relent and Glenda got her wish. The couple traveled with a small portion of her cremains in a vintage perfume bottle. It was the trip of a lifetime and the couple created many precious memories. Months later, just days before his passing, Chris decided he wanted to take another cruise to show his kids Mexico and build memories with them. While his wife was busy cooking dinner, he booked and paid for the cruise, set to sail over Valentine's Day as a Christmas gift to his family.

As a young child, Chris was legally adopted by his stepfather, and in addition to the Leader name, Chris gained siblings Sandra, Melissa, and Lynette. His adopted Brother Scotty preceded him in death. When Chris was 5, his beloved sister Grace was born. No children could ever be as devoted to each other. Or torment and tease each other as they did. Yet their relationship was so much deeper than just sharing the same Mom.

At 7 years old, Chris met his Uncle Jamie while visiting Dixie while Jamie and Aunt Bernice were on their honeymoon. Uncle Jamie became his mentor from then on. Jamie taught him the love of hunting, fishing, camping, and the great outdoors. He also taught Chris about life, love, and unconditional acceptance, influencing Chris to become the man he was meant to be.

When Chris met Kristina on Match.com, his life was forever enriched. She brought Rachel, whom Chris was so proud to call his daughter, to their union. Soon they welcomed sons Joseph and Oliver and their precious family was whole. Chris's children brought him so much joy. His little family enjoyed many adventures, most in the great outdoors, and there was always laughter. He took great pride in teaching his children not just important life skills, from how to change a tire, to improving your aim, even how to bake bread. Above all, Chris was a fierce protector of his family and was always fully invested in their lives.

Chris's extended family was also a priority in his life. He always had a great deal of love and respect for his Aunts and Uncles (his mother had 10 siblings), and considered his cousins some of his closest friends. When he married Kristina, many of her family often commented on how "He just fits" and she often playfully lamented how her brothers seemed to like Chris more than her. He took great joy in his nieces and nephews, loved teasing and joking with them, and loved watching them grow into incredible young men and women. Gracie's long-awaited daughter Arya, was a particular joy and he always seemed to have gummy bears or M&Ms in the front pocket of his bib overalls, just for her. He always made attending important events in the lives of his nieces and nephews

Chris had several meaningful jobs that helped shape his character, but his most treasured was with Glanbia in Gooding, Idaho. He shared great camaraderie with his coworkers, but especially enjoyed training new drivers, teaching them integrity, industry, and reliability. Above all, he was a taskmaster in regard to safety. And if anyone balked at his reminders, he asked them to think of going home to their families. These reminders occasionally included him speaking of his own Father-in-law, who passed after a workplace accident before he and Kristina met. His driving time also allowed him to make meaningful phone calls to loved ones to seek advice, plan the next adventure, or get their view on his latest research.

Even though the "heart zipper" he received as a young child precluded some things, he was able to be a part donor and not the full organ donor he unselfishly desired. He was able to give skin and leg veins for someone to also walk in his ways. The corneas he was able to give will hopefully give someone the eagle eyes he had, not only for hunting but also the ability to look deep into the soul to bring out the best in those he treasured.

He is predeceased by far too many. He leaves on this earthly world his beautiful wife Kristina Bobby, daughter Rachel Faye, sons Joseph Christopher and Oliver James, sister Grace (Steven) Sweatfield, step-father Robert Swertferger, In-Laws Jeff (Neeley) Ussing, Ryan (Sarah) Ussing, Scott (Cassie) Ussing, Joni Rai Ussing, Bill Ussing, and Mother-in-law Connie Ussing. Also left missing him are many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and countless friends. And his German Wirehaired Griffon retriever-in-training, Whiplash.

Memorial Services will be held at the LDS Church in Gooding on Friday, November 1, 2024 at 11:00 am (his 46th birthday).

A celebration of life will be Saturday, November 2nd at the McCreery home 1400 E. 4403 N. in Buhl.

You will always be in our hearts Papa Bear. We love you, Mamma Bear and Your Cubs. Cremation arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service – Gooding Chapel. Condolences, memories and photos can be shared with the family by following the obituary link at www.demarayfu-

Gooding Joint School District #231

October 17, 2024

Dear Parents, Guardians and Gooding Community Members,

Thank you for your continued support of our school district. Our school board, administration, and staff take great pride in the trust given us to be conscientious stewards of the money and resources you help to provide. These resources allow our students to be successful and prepared when they graduate from Gooding schools.

I wanted to make you aware that our school board approved a supplemental levy resolution in August. The proposed levy replaces an existing levy expiring on June 30, 2025 for the same amount of $759,000. The estimated average annual cost to the taxpayer on the proposed levy is a tax of $84 per $100,000 of taxable assessed value, per year, for two years, based on current conditions. Interestingly enough, with property tax relief dollars received from the State Legislature in the amount of $618.476, the actual cost to the taxpayer would be $15 per $100,000 of taxable assessed value. A decrease of $69 per $100,000.

A two-year supplemental levy has been approved and in place in the Gooding School District since 2010. The levy is needed in order to keep up with the demands of increased costs of district operations and to compensate for what state and federal funds don't cover. Below is the breakdown of how these funds are utilized:

• $510,500 Salaries and Benefits for Teachers and Staff

• $21,500 School Resource Officer, Safety and Security

• $68,000 Classroom Supplies and Curriculum

• $64,500 Technology Devices and Software

• $94,500 Maintenance and Transportation

Continuing to support the supplemental levy will allow the district to maintain the same level of service and support that our students have been receiving.

I welcome any questions you may have. Please reach out by phone through the number provided above or by emailing david.carson@qoodinqschools.org. Please remember to vote at your local precinct on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. For an absentee ballot, contact your county clerk.

Sincerely, David Carson, Superintendent

IDAHO CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT

(see voting instuctions on next page)

This proposed constitutional amendment provides that only Idaho residents who are citizens of the United States are eligible to vote in elections in the State of Idaho and that noncitizens are not eligible to vote in any election in the State of Idaho. Currently, Section 2, Article VI of the Constitution of the State of Idaho provides: “every male or female citizen of the United States, eighteen years old, who has resided in this state, and in the county where he or she offers to vote for the period provided by law, if registered as provided by law, is a qualified elector.” This provision does not expressly prohibit noncitizens from voting. The proposed amendment adds language to provide that only United States citizens may vote in elections in the State of Idaho. Question: Shall Section 2, Article VI of the Constitution of the State of Idaho be amended to provide that individuals who are not citizens of the United States may not be qualified electors in any election held within the state of Idaho?

A YES vote would approve the proposed Constitutional Amendment for additional language providing that only United States citizens may vote in elections in the State of Idaho.

A NO vote would make no change to the Idaho Constitution.

Measure to:

PROPOSITION 1

(1) replace voter selection of party nominees with a top-four primary; (2) require a ranked-choice voting system for general elections. This measure proposes two distinct changes to elections for most public offices.

First, this measure would abolish Idaho’s party primaries. Under current law, political parties nominate candidates through primary elections in which party members vote for a candidate to represent the party in the general election. The initiative creates a system where all candidates participate in a top-four primary and voters may vote on all candidates. The top four vote-earners for each office would advance to the general election. Candidates could list any affiliation on the ballot, but would not represent political parties, and need not be associated with the party they name.

Second, the measure would require a ranked-choice voting system for the general election. Under current law, voters may select one candidate for each office, and the candidate with the most votes wins. Under the ranked-choice voting system, voters rank candidates on the ballot in order of preference, but need not rank every candidate. The votes are counted in successive rounds, and the candidate receiving the fewest votes in each round is eliminated. A vote for an eliminated candidate will transfer to the voter’s next-highest-ranked active candidate. The candidate with the most votes in the final round wins.

Funding Source Statement: The Idaho Open Primaries Act will be funded by an augmentation of existing state and county expenditures for advertising and tabulation. Implementation of the act will require 1.) A public awareness effort to inform voters, candidates, and election workers about changes to the election process, and 2.) The purchase of ballot tabulation equipment capable of conducting instant runoff elections.

Fiscal Impact Statement: Under this initiative, new software for tabulating ballots via instant runoff voting is needed; no federally certified software exists for this process, though there is open-source software for tabulation. We cannot estimate the cost of software for tabulation. Seventeen counties need to purchase an election management software at an estimated cost of $300,000. Material costs for a May primary election have been above $800,000. By 2026, the (inflated, population) adjusted value is $1,600,000. The software update may increase to $600,000 were the purchase postponed.

Question: Shall the above-entitled measure proposed by Proposition One be approved?

A YES vote would replace Idaho’s primary election with a single topfour primary and change Idaho’s general election to a ranked-choice voting system.

A NO vote would make no changes to the current primary and general election voting process.
