Lincoln County Motors GRAND OPENING

This Friday, October 27th, you are invited to the Grand Opening of Lincoln County Motors just north of Shoshone (60 North Highway 75) from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Alex Hurtado (owner) opened his shop across the street from Sweet's on Cherry Street in March of this year and quickly found the building was too small for the amount of work coming in. When the Lee's Automotive building north of town became available, he made the jump into a larger and better equipped location. Alex grew up in Dietrich and started turning wrenches by the time he was twelve. Now, thirteen years later, he has taken a big leap into the world of owning his own business. Being an entrepreneur is a scary and rewarding adventure, but his goal is to make sure that he and his staff do the very best for you. The Grand Opening on October 27th will be a Halloween Bash with lots of food as well as a kids raffle (must be in costume to enter raffle). There will be door prizes and a raffle for the adults too with opportunity to win oil changes, a brake job, a tune-up, and a sprinkler blowout by a local landscaper. Come join the fun and welcome Shoshone's newest business.

...but never Compromising the Truth.

Lights On Afterschool Celebration

Last Tuesday, the Lincoln County Youth Center in Richfield joined the 24th Annual Lights On Afterschool Celebration, a nationwide series of events celebrating afterschool programs organized by Afterschool Alliance. After a pancake supper, visitors were able to tour the facility and participate in STEM learning stations. Now in its third year of operation, LCYC offers afterschool programming at no cost to the children of Lincoln County. Students are exposed to hands on and experiential learning opportunities after school until 6 p.m. “Kids have a safe and inspiring place to be after school and the opportunity to learn in new ways,” said Lincoln County Commissioner Rebecca Wood, who co-founded the center. “Their parents have the peace of mind knowing their kids are in a caring and supportive environment.” This year, LCYC has installed a multimedia center which connects Lincoln County youth to unlimited resources worldwide. They use it to learn by participating in online classes and virtual events. “Our goal from the beginning has been to make sure Lincoln County kids have access to the resources to follow their dreams. The multimedia system removes countless barrier to learning,” Wood said. The system was made possible by a grant from the Idaho Community Foundation and donations from the University of Idaho and Eminent Technical Solutions. Monday of this week, I was passing through Mackay, Idaho, and I stopped to get some fuel for my car and an ice tea for myself. Once I paid for the fuel and the tea, I started looking at the hats and tee-shirts they were selling. Both hats and tee-shirts are very good message mediums. There were some pretty decent ones displayed. One hat caught my attention. Isn't that what it is supposed to do, other than keep the sun out of your eyes, protect your ears from sunburn, or keep your hair at bay?? The hat had the zip code of Mackey printed on the face and that was all there was - just those five numbers. I told the clerk the hat was a little out of place because no one writes letters anymore. People have their zip code already on their computers if they are using Amazon. If not, they say "Alexa, what's my zip code?" I went on to say if anyone not local saw the number on the hat, they would not have a clue what it meant or even where it was from. An elderly gentleman said that's why out-ofstaters need one of those hats, to tell where they have been. I don't know that I want thousands of hats telling what zip code I have been in. I can see a pride thing in showing where are from. Maybe those items should be sold at the school carnival where everyone gets the zip code.

A number on a hat could be like a prison number, someplace you want to get out of. Maybe people want to leave Mackay? Maybe it's like real estate speculation where everyone wants to get in on selling their property for an inflated price. Some of those reasons are why we are in those out-of-balance homefarm-job situations. If I had a good thing, I don't know if I would want everyone and facebook to use it up. I have seen that with hot springs I use to enjoy. Now you can't even use the hot springs because they are filled up. Maybe the zip code on your hat is a great conversation piece. I find that strange because if you are not a native, people don't care to just carry on a conversation. Of course, on the other hand, if you play it down and say how bad it is at your zip code, maybe people won't come. I didn't see the person who ordered the hats at the store but I would have liked to have heard their reason for the hat logo. I may of been surprised. This is my "Cup of Tee" for the road.

Virgil A. Berney

Virgil A. Berney passed away peacefully at his home in Buhl, Idaho on October 5, 2023. He was born on March 22, 1933 in Greeley, Nebraska to Vernon "Buzz" and Bessie Studley Berney. He was the second of three children and only one son. When Virgil was six years old, hard times caused by the Great Depression forced his family to leave their Nebraska farm and head west. They stayed with family in Kimberly, Idaho where Virgil started school. When he was in the third grade they moved to Twin Falls and settled there. Virgil graduated from the old Twin Falls High School in 1950. Virgil's first job was at the age of twelve delivering papers for The Times News on the bicycle bought for him by his older sister Annabelle. His life-long friend Dale Carlton worked there as well and over the years they shared many of their paper delivering escapades with their friends and families. He also worked at a local grocery store and once had a job working for Kenny Barth killing chickens. Virgil then went to work for United Automotive in Twin Falls as a delivery person, working his way up to outside salesman. After several years he decided to open his own auto parts business and he and Max Moore went into partnership to open V&M Partsland in Jerome, Idaho. Alongside his wife Amy Jo, he owned and operated Partsland until they retired in 2006. In 1952 Virgil married Ardith Mae Hampton and they had five children – Janet, Brenda, Scot, Linda and Lori. They were later divorced and on November 14, 1981 he married Amy Jo Blackburn. Virgil and Amy worked together at V&M Partsland for seventeen years and after they sold the business in 2006, they continued working together at their home on the river that Scot always referred to as "the ranch". Every year they grew a huge garden and shared all sorts of vegetables with everyone they knew. People were always stopping in front of their place, commenting on what a beautiful garden they had. About two years ago he became physically unable to do much in the garden so Amy Jo settled him in a chair out there and under his watchful eye and direction she kept it up for him until the day he died. Virgil is survived by his loving wife of forty-one years – Amy Jo; his daughters – Janet (Lonnie) Johnston of Buhl, Brenda (Robert) Greer of Clinton, Utah, Linda (Steve) Upton of Twin Falls and Lori Wayment of Twin Falls; as well as sixteen grandchildren, forty-three great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters – Annabelle Wieser and Carol Ann Pabian; his son – Scot; and two great grandchildren. A celebration of life was held on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at El Sombrero in Jerome. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Virgil's name to: Auburn Crest Hospice 397 Blue Lakes Blvd. Twin Falls, Idaho 83301. Cremation arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service – Gooding Chapel. ...but never Compromising the Truth.

Lava Ridge Wind Project is Out-of-Touch with Idahoans

5

from Congressman Mike Simpson

The proposal to build a 400-turbine wind-generating facility in the Magic Valley has been met with almost unanimous opposition from local residents—I have yet to talk to one Magic Valley resident who supports it. This comes as no surprise. The Biden Administration continues to push its renewable fuels agenda despite projects like these having numerous concerns. Biden's Bureau of Land Management (BLM) needs to take a major step back on the Lava Ridge Wind proposal and listen to the Idahoans who would be most significantly impacted by it. Critics of this project—and there are many—have cited numerous concerns about the Lava Ridge proposal. Filling the landscape with hundreds of 600-foot-tall wind turbines would significantly impact all other land uses. It could compromise the ability to use aircraft for fire suppression in an area prone to wildfires. It could threaten long-standing efforts to recover sage-grouse habitat and prevent efforts to keep the sage-grouse off the Endangered Species Act, efforts in which Idaho has been a leader for a decade and a half. It could upset the integrated resource plans of Idaho utilities and hurt existing electricity customers. And it would undoubtedly dramatically impact the Minidoka National Historic Site. Affected farmers, tribes, sportsmen, conservationists, the Japanese-American community, and others have all expressed their opposition to this plan. In choosing to prioritize renewable wind power over all other legitimate uses of this land, the BLM seems intent on changing the long-standing approach of managing public land for a variety of uses. For Idahoans, the concept of multiple-use land management is highly valued and deeply rooted in our way of life. It requires conservation, predictability of use, and support from local communities—all things threatened by a proposal to close off hundreds of square miles of public land to one specific use with very little if any, local support. Because of my concern about BLM's failure to adequately engage those most affected by this project, I have taken significant actions to prevent the Biden Administration from rushing ahead with the proposal. I have used my position as Chairman of the House Interior and Environment Appropriations Subcommittee, which oversees funding for the BLM, to shed light on the myriad concerns about this proposal. This past spring, I questioned both BLM Director Stone-Manning and U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Deb Haaland directly about Lava Ridge during the FY24 budget hearings. In my questioning, I highlighted ongoing concerns, including the project's lack of public support and the fact that this project would prioritize renewable energy development over all other land uses. In order to force the BLM to slow down and acknowledge the concerns of the impacted communities, I included language in the FY24 House Interior and Environment Appropriations bill prohibiting funding to be used for such wind energy projects in Idaho until the U.S. Government Accountability Office – an independent, nonpartisan government agency – completes a report identifying the potential adverse effects of the project on wildlife, cultural resources, transportation, hunting, and other legitimate land uses. Together with Senators Crapo and Risch, Governor Little, and Lieutenant Governor Bedke, earlier this year, I communicated my deep concerns to the Idaho BLM about this project and asked the state office to refocus its process to work with local communities and address their legitimate objections. I also requested that BLM extend the comment period for the Lava Ridge draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) to address stakeholder concerns over the proposal, a request that was granted. The Biden Administration must be held accountable. It cannot continue to unilaterally ram through renewable energy projects with no local support, and with no forethought for their impact on other important land uses. I expect the BLM to listen to the concerns of Idahoans directly affected by the proposed Lava Ridge Wind Project and give those concerns considerable weight as the public comment period continues. So far, this project has proven to be out of touch with Idaho values, and you can be confident that I stand with the Magic Valley in opposing it.
