October 30th in Shoshone Last Wednesday, District 26 Legislative candidates spoke at the Idaho Mountain Express “Pizza & Politics” forum at Wood River High School. (Read about that forum in the October 19th edition of the Express or go online to www.mtexpress.com.) Next Tuesday, October 30th, the Lincoln County Republican Central Committee will hold “Pie & Politicians” at the Lincoln County Community Center (Lincoln County Fairgrounds). This event will begin at 6 p.m. with a “Meet & Greet” social hour and at 7 p.m. state and local candidates will speak and answer questions. In Lincoln County there are two contested races. Cresley McConnell is challenging Charles Ritter (the incumbent) for the District One County Commissioner seat. Sheriff Kevin Ellis is facing two write-in candidates: Daniel C Ward of Richfield and Mike Bright of Shoshone. In the District 26 Legislative races there are four individuals running for the House of Representatives seats. For the last twenty years, Wendy Jaquet from Ketchum has held the District 26 Seat A position. At the beginning of last year, she announced that she would not seek another term. “It’s time for a new voice in the House from our district,” she said, and two individuals are running for that office. John Remington (D) has been a history teacher in Idaho for 24 years and the Athletic Director for the Community continued on page 3.....

Gooding Soccer Takes State Last weekend, the boys soccer team from Gooding took first in the Idaho State 3A Soccer Tournament. In the district tournament, the Senators defeated Community School (7-1) and the Wendell Trojans (4-2) for the 3A High Desert Championship. They then went on to the state tournament at the Sunway Soccer Complex in Twin Falls to defeat Weiser (5-1), Bonners Ferry (2-0), and Fruitland (1-0), to take home the championship trophy.

Northside Volleyball Goes to Dietrich The Blue Devil Girls came out on top in the Northside Conference Volleyball tournament and will be playing in the first match of the State 1AD2 Tournament held at Twin Falls High School on October 26th and 27th. On Friday they will play against Deary H.S. at 8 a.m., then go on to play either Mackay or TriValley in the afternoon. The Richfield Girls also made it to the State Tournament this year by defeating Clark County at the play-in game last Saturday. They will play against Horseshoe Bend in Match 3 at 8 a.m. on Friday.

Football & Cross Country After their victory over Filer, the Gooding Senators will host the first round of the state football playoff competition this Friday, October 26th. Game will begin at 7 p.m. This year’s Idaho State Cross Country meet will be held at Hells Gate State Park in Lewiston, Idaho, on Friday, October 27th. The various classifications will begin at different times starting with the 3A girls at 11 a.m., 3A boys at 12 noon, and the 2A girls and boys at 1:30 and 2:30 respectively. Hells Gate Park is located 4 miles south of Lewiston on the Snake River.

...Pie & Politicians continued School in Sun Valley for 23 years. He retired from education this year to pursue the State Representative seat. Steve Miller (R) is a 4th generation farmer from Camas County and has served on that county’s P&Z commission, as well as 6 years as County Commissioner. He has been a active spokesman for good stewardship in agriculture by serving on local, state, and national Soil Conservation boards. Donna Pence (D) was elected to the District 26 Seat B in 2004 and has served four terms. Mrs. Pence has been an educator since 1964, including 16 years at the Gooding Middle School. She retired from teaching in 1998 to assist with the development of a 60-acre tree farm near Gooding and has been an outspoken advocate for agricultural and small business issues. Lee Barron, Mrs. Pence’s Republican challenger, is no stranger to politics having served in Idaho House of Representatives in the 1970’s. He also served as the state chairman and national vice-chairman for the Young Republicans, and served on the State Republican Central Committee. He grew up on his father’s Camas Prairie farm, graduated from Camas County High School, and went on to receive a B.S. Degree in Geological Engineering from the University of Idaho. The district seats (1, 2 or 3) only indicate where the candidate must live in order to run for that office. Kenneth James Peterson
Evelyn Marie Cambell
Kenneth James Peterson, 57, of Gooding, left us way too soon on October 17, 2012 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Twin Falls. Kenneth was born on June 30, 1955 in Hailey, Idaho, where he grew up in the Wood River Valley. He had worked hard in the construction field and this took a major toll on his body. Kenny loved fishing with his Grandpa when he was young, and he enjoyed family fishing trips and camping. He loved to snow ski and water ski. He tried at the age of 50 to snow board, he soon learned that was a young man’s sport. He loved motorcycles, nice car’s, music and his guitars. Kenny loved his family; he was always there for them, so many looked up to their Butch. His best quality was his joking personality, even in the most serious times; he always found the way to make people laugh. He was married to Katherine “Kathy” Peterson on November 19, 1992 in Sagle, Idaho at McFarland Pole Company by her step-father. Definitely a spur of the moment wedding, we didn’t even know the witness until after the ceremony was over. Twenty three years later, through all our life’s ups and downs, to the end still standing together as one and strong. Yes, I will marry you again. Kenneth is survived by: his wife, Katherine; four sons, Buddy “Ken Jr.”, Jason Durfee, Shane Peterson and Ben Hall; three daughters, Candice (Munner) Peterson, Lynn Watkins, and Cassandra Legarreta; his brothers, David Peterson and Richard Matthews ; sister, Kathy (Gary) Bliss; grandchildren, Alexis, Steven, Mercedes, Aurah, MacKenzie, Hailey Gentry and Wyatt; step-children, Brittney Peymon and Alicia Sage; nieces and nephews, Rick, Chalia and Holly, Sara and family, Phillip, Jason, Michelle, Ronnie and Nicki, Tim Peterson and Dirk Bagley. He was preceded in death by his loving mother, Mary Peterson, his father, Kenneth Peterson, sister and best friend, Rose Mathews, loving daughters, Celeste Gentry and Tosha Peterson, his little spittin’ image, nephew, Billy Joe Mathews; along with many aunts and uncles. Ken left us all way to soon, so many word’s unsaid, so many things left unfinished. We love you Daddy, I love you Honey, and we all know you are our guardian angel. At Ken’s request a private ceremony will be held with family and very close friends. Cremation arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service.
Evelyn Marie Campbell, age 93, loving mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother, of Hagerman, formerly of Prescott, Arizona and Wendell, Idaho, passed away Saturday, October 20, 2012 at Stonebridge Assisted Living in Hagerman, Idaho. Evelyn was born September 8, 1919 in Novelty, Ohio to the late Harry and Bessie (Winkler) Beighley. She married the late Donald S. Beverly in June of 1944 in Toledo, Ohio. This marriage was blessed with a son; Philip (Donna) Beverly of Gooding, Idaho. Her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren from Phil and Donna are; Grandson, Bill Beverly; granddaughter, LaDawn (Dave) Saxton; great-grandchild, Cedar Rose Saxton; granddaughter, Lisa (Brandon) Mosher; great-grandchild, Grace Joanne Mosher. Evelyn married the late F.W. Campbell, Jr., (Bill), on July 2, 1960 in Las Vegas, Nevada. This marriage was blessed with two sons; Ian Lee (Mary) Campbell of Rupert, Idaho; and Hugh Scott, of Wendell, Idaho. Her grandchildren from Ian and Mary are; grandson, Jeffery (Heather) Campbell; granddaughter, Tiana (Chad) Beckett; granddaughter, Danielle Campbell. Evelyn was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Evelyn was raised in Ohio and graduated from Rawson High School in 1937. She began her nurse’s training in September of 1941 in Toledo, Ohio. She graduated as a Registered Nurse at the top of her class from Mercy Hospital Nursing School. She worked at the Mercy Hospital and was transferred to east Toledo to the new St. Charles Hospital in 1952; she was the Night Supervisor until 1956. In 1956, Evelyn moved with her son, Phillip and parents to Prescott, Arizona where she became the Director of Nursing at Prescott Community Hospital until 1960. She met Bill Campbell through the Mile High Square Dancing Club in 1958. Evelyn and Bill owned and operated the CF Ranch located in Seligman, Arizona until 1968; they then moved to Wendell, Idaho and lived north of Wendell on Desert View Ranch. In 1972, Bill Campbell served as President of the American International Charolais Association. Evelyn and Bill, as representatives of the AICA traveled extensively that year, including travels to the Far East. Evelyn served on the Wendell School Board for 2 terms during the 1970’s. She returned to her nursing career as the Nurse Supervisor at Magic Valley Manor until her retirement. In 1978, Evelyn moved with her family to the farm near Tuttle, Idaho One of the many of Evelyn’s activities was sewing. She was an accomplished seamstress. Evelyn enjoyed the outdoors; camping and fishing with her husband. They enjoyed “rock hounding” for many years, and spent several winters in Arizona. Evelyn’s main hobby was painting, and she displayed many of her beautiful oil paintings throughout her home. Private family services will be held, with burial taking place at the Wendell Cemetery in Wendell. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service.
DEATH/SERVICE NOTICE Charles “Chuck” Paul Shirey, Sr., 68, a resident of Wendell, passed away Friday, October 19, 2012 at Overland Park Senior Living in Boise. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, October 26, 2012, at Demaray Funeral Service – Wendell Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, October 27, 2012 at the Wendell Cemetery in Wendell. Roland Andre Scott, 31, a resident of Anchorage, Alaska, passed away Sunday, October 14, 2012 in Anchorage. A memorial service was held on Saturday, October 20, 2012, at the First Baptist Church in Shoshone. Local arrangements were under the care and direction of DFS.

She is qualified to represent our county as commissioner, and will work hard for the people to lead the county in the right direction. Please give Leigh Weidman your vote on November 6th. Bill Cimino ----------------------------Dear Editor, I’d like to write a few words in support of Donna Pence who is running for State Representative for District 26. Recently, I was having some problems with a state agency regarding a retirement concern. I contacted Donna and immediately had a personal call back from her. We discussed the matter and she promptly not only called the agency involved but also went to the office to talk with the staff face to face. Eventually the problem was solved and again she contacted me right away as to the results. I was quite impressed with her quick actions and attention which to me demonstrated the true definition of a legislator concerned about her constituents. As a retired educator I know that Representative Pence is very concerned about the state of public schools in Idaho. As all of us are, she too has voiced alarm at the cuts in funding education the last few years and has stated she will fight to restore them. Additionally, she wants to see that more local control is returned to education instead of the power grab recently enacted by the state. One of my concerns is the current state of political polarization on both sides of the aisle. It is truly refreshing that District 26 is represented by someone who cares little about party affiliation of its residents. I truly believe whatever your political bent you will have the full attention and cooperation of Representative Donna Pence if it is needed. Please consider giving her your support on November 6th. The Bill passed the House and was held in the Senate Tax Committee; Donna will ensure it is on the docket again next session. Preserving our quality of life: Donna is passionate our natural resources and the opportunities to enjoy them. We are all responsible for our air, water, soil, and other natural resources and to make sure we leave them in good shape for our future generations. Donna and her husband own and operate a wholesale tree farm and set a fine example of good stewardship. Additionally, Representative Pence has been so concerned about the sage grouse issues that she asked Governor Otter if she could attend the Sage Grouse Task Force meetings, even though she was not assigned to the group. The Governor agreed and Donna attended all meetings as an ad hoc, non-voting member. For Donna to win reelection, the support of District 26 voters is essential. Please make the effort to vote early by absentee ballot or on Election Day at your polling place. Where do Teachers come from? One of my all time favorite movies is Pixar’s Ratatouille. Not only is it a fun story about great food, it also has some deep insights into what makes people successful in life. There is a line in that movie that will forever be in my mind. Talking about the art of cooking, one of the main characters says, “Not everyone can become a great artist; but a great artist can come from anywhere.” I wish that those in our educational system would take that truth to heart, but they don’t. Our school systems (under certain guidelines) use to be able to hire “non-certified” teachers. This allowed people with specific skills to teach our children when “certified” teachers were unavailable. This was a great program for small communities where it is often difficult to get specialized teachers. Then came “No Child Left Behind.” A bi-partisan group of legislators authored the legislation, and it was signed into law in 2002. Among other things, NCLB requires all public school teachers to have: One, a bachelor’s degree; Two, full state certification or licensure; and Three, proof that they know their subjects. While this legislation was well intentioned, it made three major errors. First, it assumed that having “education” and “knowledge” was enough to make a person a teacher - clearly, not true. Secondly, it solidified the control over the American education system by the educational establishment. You see, NCLB was the single best thing that ever happened for those who want to control how and what our children are taught because it eliminated the possibility of great teachers coming in to our schools from outside the system. Today, if you want to teach (in a public school), you have to go through specific course-work and testing, all of which is controlled by “educators.” All of this would be irrelevant, if we could say that (ten years later) education in America has improved. Unfortunately, we can not make that claim. Scores on national tests like the SAT continue to drop while scores on the ACT remain static - even with “improvement” made to those tests. This, of course, brings us to the third major error in NCLB, the assumption that standardized test scores mean anything. Standardized testing can be a useful tool for teaching, but it tell us nothing about the ultimate success or failure of a student. That pain-in-the-behind teenager who can’t complete a test or a homework assignment, and has a 2.0 GPA, could well be America’s next billionaire. The straight-A, captain of the football or volleyball team, might end up flipping hamburgers for the rest of their life. Identifying good teachers (Proposistion Two / S1110) might be desirable, but is it fair to using someone else’s (a student’s) test scores to do so? Also, what good does it do to reward a good teacher when bad teachers still remain in the system? If we really want to improve education in Idaho (or anywhere), we have to find people (regardless of degrees and certificates) who truly love teaching because if a person doesn’t love what they do, they will never “swallow” the idea of making what they do a life-long passion. In other words, we need to embrace the truth that, “not everyone can become a great teacher; but a great teacher can come from anywhere.” Next Week: Turning our children into Robots
