Temporary Closure of Willow Creek Bridge

From November 1, 2022 to November 11, 2022 the Wil low Creek Bridge on Forest Road #227 on the Sawtooth National Forest six miles east of Featherville, Idaho, will be replaced. During this period, access will be blocked.

The area west of the bridge may be accessed from Feather ville. The area east of the bridge may be accessed from Fairfield, Idaho via Couch Summit.

The new bridge will be wider and made of steel and concrete instead of wood. This should help ensure access into the future, since it will be better able to withstand fire or floods. CONSUMER ALERT: Idahoans Urged to be Cautious

During 2022 Medicare Open Enrollment

from the Idaho the Department of Insurance

The Idaho Department of Insurance is warning consumers shopping for Medicare health insurance to be wary of improper marketing by telemarketers and television commercials during Medicare’s Open Enrollment Period, which begins on October 15 and ends December 7. During that period, Medicare ben eficiaries can choose the plans that are best for them for 2023.

The DOI offers these reminders to Idahoans:

If anyone calls you who you did not have a scheduled ap pointment with, and requests personal or private informa tion (Medicare number, Social Security number, bank or credit card information), hang up! CMS will not directly call you about Medicare coverage, and it is illegal for com panies to market Medicare Advantage over the phone.

Be cautious of changing your insurance plan based on advertisements. Any extra benefits in Medicare insurance advertisements on television or in mailings might not be available where you live. Get all the details in writing be fore you sign up.

Ensure the plan is right for you. Before you sign up, reach out to your doctors to verify they are in that plan’s network, and check if your prescription drugs are covered.

You can’t have both a Medigap plan and a Medicare Advantage plan. Even if someone promises that you can keep your Medigap plan (supplemental plan) and have a Medicare Advantage plan, it is against the rules and is not beneficial to have both.

Before making a change, contact your trusted insurance agent or call Senior Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA) at 1-800-247-4422. Licensed agents can be found at the Depart ment of Insurance’s website.

“We highly recommend consumers work with a licensed, lo cal agent, or someone they know and trust to carefully evaluate plan options,” says Dean L. Cameron, Director of the Idaho Department of Insurance. “We hope Idahoans will utilize our department and SHIBA if they have any concerns about ma nipulative or deceptive sales and enrollment tactics. Our role is to protect consumers.”

Cheer Camp

RED AND BLACK THE BEST! OH YES! That is a cheer I learned at cheer camp a few years ago. This year, my sister Alex, who is 8, attended cheer camp. Alex is in third grade; her teacher is Mrs. Collier. Alex has dark brown hair and eyes. She likes to wear teals and pinks and always thinks she needs to be cute. Did you know Alex signed up so she could hang out with the GHS cheerleaders? She wants to be a cheerleader when she is in middle school because she loves cheer; it is like gymnastics. Nothing is annoying about cheer. All the elementary girls who attended cheer camp got to help cheer at the first high school football game. Alex was nervous about the first football game because she had to perform in front of the whole stadium. She thinks she can come up with a better cheer that they already use because of all of what she learned. She cheers up all the time. Alex loves cheer. GO SENATOR CHEER!

Crocodiles

Criky a crocodile! Today, let's learn about crocodiles, ready? Great, then let's get started! First, did you know that there are 23 different types of crocodiles? Amazing! Let's learn more about crocodiles. Second, what's the largest crocodile ....It's a.... Saltwater crocodile! Saltwater crocodiles are so ancient that they lived with dinosaures! That's an amazing fact. Basically, crocodiles are dinosaurs. Most of you know that crocodiles are carnivores; that means they eat meat. They may be big and scary, but are not picky eaters; they eat small fish and other crocodiles. They snack on fruit as well. I guess that all of you have seen shows of killer crocs and crocodiles eating humans. So you might be scared of crocodiles, but there is nothing to be scared of. They're just carnivores and just hungry. So here's the tip, don't be scared of crocodiles. Stay out of the way and you're fine. And don't say you're not scared of crocodiles because I'm even scared of crocs. Crocodiles are interesting and fun creatures! by Jackson Ray

Gov. Little Responds to Biden's Pardon for Marijuana Offenders

Governor Brad Little issued the following statement after President Joe Biden announced he would pardon all federal marijuana convictions and encouraged governors to issue similar pardons in their states.

"Open borders and open prisons – welcome to Biden's America. He wants to let people out of jail for drug offenses while he keeps the border open, allowing drug traffickers to pour into our country unchecked.

"It is clear President Biden issued this blanket pardon for show, setting a bad precedent when cases should be reviewed on their individual merits. But what's not clear is whether Biden really understands that individuals incarcerated for possession of small amounts of marijuana almost always have accompanying offenses, making his blanket pardon basically pointless.

"Here in Idaho, we will continue to fight for a secure border and make our correctional system fair, with a focus on keeping dangerous people off the street," Governor Little said.

Under Idaho law, only the Commission of Pardons and Parole can issue pardons. For the most serious crimes where the maximum punishment is death or life in prison, the Governor has the authority to approve or deny the commission's recommendation.

obituary

John Ensunsa

John Ensunsa, who combined a lifelong passion of working with people and advancing community organizations and causes in Castleford and the Magic Valley, died September 5. He was 84 years old.

John was the second child born to Gregorio Ensunsa and Lena Achabal on November 24, 1937. Like his older sister, Edith, he was born at home in the country near Castleford. He was fond of the story of how his parents met and fell in love; his father, a sheepherder, falling for one of the camp cooks at the Maurice Guerry sheep company, then spending their first year of marriage living in a sheep-wagon and tending sheep near Three Creek in the high desert of southern Idaho.

From a young age, John worked on the family farm and attended Cas tleford public schools, graduating from high school in 1955. Those early formative years had a powerful impact on him being drawn to agriculture and his desire to be part of the process of raising and harvesting crops. John was a good student and active in the school band and all sports. After breaking his nose twice in football, (one time run ning the ball into a linebacker and the next time catching a pass, turning and running into a big tree that bordered the football field) John said he was duly rewarded with being the first person in Castleford history to get a facemask on a football helmet.

College was an easy choice for John. In junior high school, he heard a Christmas concert on the radio featuring a choir performance by the Vandaleers, and from that point forward, John said he knew he was headed north and enrolling at the University of Idaho.

John loved the U of I, Moscow and the Palouse. He joined the Vandaleers and the Sigma Chi Fraternity, serving as president of both groups his senior year. He and three fraternity brothers formed an acappella singing group called the Singin' Sigs. John said some of the best friendships of his entire lifetime came from associations made at the university. By the time 1960 rolled around, he had earned a bachelor's degree in Agricultural Economics and was voted in the yearbook as the most eligible bachelor on campus.

Inspired by his years on the Palouse and working on the family farm, John took his first job out of college working for the Asgrow Seed Company as a field associate at their pro duction plants in Genesee, Idaho and Salinas, California then as a supervisor in Warden, Washington. During his stint in Warden, John was invited by friends one afternoon to go water skiing; his friends had brought along Jessie Diane Draney, who worked at a lo cal bank. That afternoon blossomed into a year-and-a-half long courtship, a marriage on September 21, 1963, and a partnership that spanned nearly 59 years.

John and Diane and their son, Dave, born in 1964, moved to Castleford in 1966 to join the family farm with John's parents. In the early 1970s, Gregorio retired and John farmed on his own. Their first daughter, Gina, was born in 1967 and their second daughter, Julie, was born in 1970, but died shortly after birth. The farm operation expanded over the years and included raising commercial polled Hereford cattle.

During the late 1960s and early 1970s, John was active in Young Republicans and the Twin Falls County Farm Bureau, serving as president of both organiza tions. In 1972, John received the outstanding young farmer award from the Buhl Jaycees and a few years later, received the organization's distin guished service award.

In the mid-1970s and early 1980s, John served two terms on the Cas tleford School Board and two terms as a board member of the Federal Land Bank. John also became a certified Emergency Medical Technician and was an early member of the Castleford Quick Response Unit, serving as a certified EMT for 20 years.

In response to the nationwide Farm Crisis in the 1980s, John and seven other area farmers formed the Southern Idaho Family Farm Hotline in 1985. Throughout the 1980s, the Hotline handled several hundred calls from distressed farmers and ranchers and conducted seminars in Idaho and northern Nevada, to provide financial, legal and stress advice.

John's love of all music was never-ending throughout his life and in 1987, he was instrumental in organizing a community choir in Castleford which grew to include members from Buhl and Filer. The group performed an annual Christmas cantata at area churches. John conducted the choir and in later years was part of the baritone section. The act of singing was one of John's true passions. Along with Tom Tverdy, Gloria Fleming, Evelyn Assendrup, Mary Iverson and many others over the years, John helped lead the singing during Sunday Mass at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Buhl, and playing his acoustic guitar. John, along with Diane, who played piano, would rehearse songs together on many evenings after work, and John sang at numerous weddings, funerals and other special occasions over the years.

In 1988, John went to work part-time as an insurance agent for the Farm Bureau Insurance Company. Initially, he didn't intend to work full-time at insurance, but he found that he enjoyed his customers and the Farm Bureau team so much that he soon went full-time and worked as an agent based in the Buhl office until his retirement in December, 2009. John retired from farming at the end of the 2017 season.

Throughout his years in the Castleford community, John was an active member of the Castleford Men's Club, serving as president on a few occasions. The Men's Club raises money for scholarships and provides financial support for the QRU, local service groups and youth organizations. The club honored John with the Outstanding Citizen Award in 1991 for his community involvement.

John also was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church serving as president of the finance and pastoral councils for many years. He also helped with many Cursillo retreats (three-day gatherings to deepen spiritual life) around the state. Spirituality was part of John's inner core and central to his daily life.

John's Basque heritage from both parents was very important to him. He was a member of the Gooding Basque Association and the Boise Basque Museum and Cultural Center for many years. He has numerous Ensunsa and Achabal cousins in the Basque Country of northern Spain.

As hard as John worked over the years, he made time for fun and he made time for people. He loved people through his civic activities, through church, through his work with farming and insurance, U of I gatherings and through the couples' bridge club that he and Diane were involved with for the past five decades. Anytime there was food and people together was John's favorite combination.

John will be remembered fondly by many for his kindness, his humility, his affable and playful nature, his unhurried approach to conversations and engaging with people, and the smile he had on his face most all the time. He was a gentle man, he always saw the good in others, he listened before he spoke and he lived life with integrity every day. He was a loving and supportive husband, father and grandfather and he had friends in abundance.

John is survived by his wife of nearly 59 years - Jessie Diane; his daughter - Gina and wife, Tiffany of Portland; son - Dave and wife, Monique; and two grandchildren - Amaya and Nick, all of Boise.

John is preceded in death by his parents - Gregorio and Lena; his sister – Edith; and his infant daughter - Julie.

In honor of John, a funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 21, 2022, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Buhl. A reception will follow at 2 p.m. with a luncheon at 3 p.m. at the Gooding Basque Center at 285 Euskadi Lane in Gooding.

A private family inurnment will take place on a later date at the West End Cemetery in Buhl. Arrangements are under the direction of Demaray Funeral Service – Gooding Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, please make any memorials to the Gooding Basque Association P.O. Box 517 Gooding, Idaho 83330.

Jackie Wayne Cornette

Jackie Wayne Cornette 80, of Wendell, Idaho passed away peacefully Saturday, October 1, 2022, at St. Luke’s Hospi tal, Twin Falls, Idaho. Jack battled many health issues after he broke his leg in 2022. Jack was born in Luzerne, Kentucky on July 4, 1942. Jack enjoyed the fact that the whole country was celebrating his birthday every year along with him.

Jack was a resident of Wendell, Idaho and had decided to move there in 2006 to be closer to his family and friends that lived in the Magic Valley. Jack retired from driving truck after an accident that made it difficult for him to drive a big rig. Jack never missed a car show if there was a way for him to go.

A week after his knee replacement, he managed to get himself into his 54 Chevy and make it to Hagerman for a “Blast on the Grass.” Jack was the kind of guy that could and would strike up a conversation with whoever was close by. Many would get a taste of his humor and sarcasm and not know how to take it. He loved to see people’s reactions to his remarks with a chuckle and a smile.

In 1999, Jack married Jan Gooding in Santa Nella, California. Each had had quite dif ferent lives and all the baggage that life brings. There was a calmness for both as they grew together. Life has a way of putting people together when the timing is right. Jack and Jan enjoyed 24 years of friendship and love, each supporting each other in their dreams, hopes and challenges.

Jack grew up and attended schools in Ogden, Utah. Jack married Joy M. Manwarin, and they had four children: Stacey, Corey, Kelby, and Jody. Jack was a man of adventure and did it all. He joined the Army, Navy, and Merchant Marines. He was a Vietnam veteran. Jack worked for Boeing and McClellan Air Force Base in his younger years. Truck driving, building beautiful classic cars and talking about car things with his friends were Jack’s favorite pastimes. Jack’s car club Staggs celebrated 65 years in 2022 and Jack was honored to be a part of it. Jack was also a member of the Idaho Chariots.

Jackie was the youngest child of Blanche Agnes Hammer and Shelby Joseph Cornette who preceded him in death. Jackie is survived by his siblings Claudette (Bill) Hoggan of War rensburg, Mo., and Shelby Cornett (Louise) of Ogden Utah. Jack’s nephew Scott Hoggan also preceded him.

Jackie was the proud father of Stacey (Adam) Korbitz, Monona Wisconsin; Corey Keevy (Kelly) Spokane, WA., Kelby Cornett (Erika) Hagerman, Id; and Jody Allen (Rick) of Arizona. Jack was also stepfather to Donny Gooding (Melissa) Gilroy, California, Joshua Waldrop, Kennewick, WA; Adam Waldrop (Gina) Morgan Hill, Ca.: Katie Morris (Dave) Kennewick, WA. Jack’s grandchildren: Elayna, Benjamin, Tia, Brittney, Jessica, and Cody. He was also Grandpa to Adam, Christian, Briana, Angelic, Joshua, Eliana, and Carson. Jack is survived by several great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A special mention to the young men that continued to check on Jack as he was declining, Joseph and his three sons Santos, Carlos and Junior Gutierrez, Chris and Wyatt Woods and Floyd Smith. Thank you to the staff at St Luke’s. Thank you to the nurses and therapists that worked with Jack over the last couple of years. You gave him hope when there was none.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be October 29, 2022 at 11 a.m. at Parke’s Magic Valley Funeral Home (2551 Kimberly Rd., Twin Falls, Idaho). Jack’s family would encourage friends and family to bring their favorite ride (car show car). In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite veteran charity.
