The 2012 Election Amendments & Propositions Besides the various candidates running for federal, state, and local offices, this year’s ballot will have two proposed amendments to the Idaho Constitution, and three Propositions. For a full text of these proposals, be sure to pick up the Idaho Voter’s Pamphlet at your courthouse or post office. The first proposed change to the Constitution (S.J.R. 102) involves changes to the law regarding “adult probation and parole,” clarifying that the state has control over felony issues and local governments have control over misdemeanor issues. The second proposed amendment (H.J.R. 2aa) would protect the right to hunt, fish, and trap, as part of our cultural heritage in Idaho. Both of these Constitutional Amendments are a simple YES or NO - yes, you are in favor of the amendment, or no, you are not in favor of the change. The propositions are a bit different, because they are intended to overturn existing law. In 2011, Governor Otter and the Idaho Legislature passed three laws (S1108, S1110 & S1184) that dealt with various aspects of education in Idaho. Dubbed “Students Come First” legislation by the supporters and “Luna Laws” by the dissenters, you will have the opportunity to vote for or against these laws. ----Proposition One is in regards to S1108. Gooding Senators Take District Title It took 27 years to repeat, but the Senators are once again conference champions. Last week, the Varsity Football team easily defeated the Filer Wildcats in their final Conference matchup to earn the title of District Champs with a 7-0 record for the season. The JV’s also won last week, however, in the middle school both squads lost tight defensive battles in Filer. The Senators will play Homedale this Friday at 7 p.m. -------------------------------------
Dietrich Defeats Camas Last night, the Blue Devils took the Musher Ladies down a notch with a 3 to 1 home court victory. Tuesday night’s scores were 25-19, 25-17, 18-25, and 25-23. This Saturday, the Northside Conference volleyball tournament will begin with the junior high and junior varsity teams playing in Dietrich. The varsity teams will face off starting next Tuesday, October 16th, in Dietrich as well, and the State Tournament will be October 26th and 27th. -------------------------------------
Gooding Invitational Cross Country Meet On Tuesday, October 9th, the top team scores for the men’s cross country went to Kimberly (30), Gooding (42), and Filer (81). for the women’s teams the top scores went to Valley (57), Gooding (58), and Declo (69). On October 17th, Gooding will host the 3A, 2A, & 1A District competition.

Help Get Larissa Stewart Back on the Volleyball Court A special account has been set up at U.S. Bank to help with Larissa’s medical expenses, and a fundraising event is being planned for the October 19th football game (3:30 p.m.) between Camas and Clark County. The Sandwiched Inn will be serving Sloppy Joes, and Dutch Oven treats will be provided by Floyd Crandall and Steve Cox. All proceeds go to help young Miss Stewart. Shoshone Scholastic Book Fair October 22nd-25th The Book Fair will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the 22nd and 23rd (Monday-Tuesday), and from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the 24th and 25th (Wednesday-Thursday). These times coincide with parent-teacher conferences so please stop by the library before or after you visit with your child’s teacher. Mrs. Owens is pleased with $5000 grant from Idaho Commission for Libraries. So far, that money has added 147 new titles with many more to come! Mrs. Owens is also seeking coloring book donations for the Shoshone School Library. If you are interested in donating a coloring book please contact her at 886-2381 ext. 345.
Agape Luncheon The Agape Ministry luncheon will be held on Wednesday, October 24th, at the Lincoln Inn, 413 Main Street, Gooding, Idaho beginning at 11:30 am. The program is entitled “From Polygamy to Christianity”. Susan Rae Schmidt was once a member of a Fundamentalist Mormon Church and the child bride of polygamist leader, Verlan LeBaron in Colonia LeBaron in Mexico. After eight years of marriage, she left her husband and fled with her five children to the United States. She has since become a born again Christian and lives with her second husband in southern Idaho. She is the author of the book, Favorite Wife: Escape from Polygamy, a riveting memoir of the life inside one of North America’s most notorious polygamous cults. Soldier Mountain Town Hall Meeting

This Thursday, October 11th, the official transfer of ownership of the ski resort will be announced at a town hall meeting held at the Fairfield Legion Hall. At 6 p.m. the Fairfield community is invited to a question and answer session with the new owners, Soldier Mountain Ski Area, Inc. The Board of Directors will also present their vision for the mountain, and unveil a brand new Soldier Mountain Logo. The new owners have some familiar face, and a long history with Camas County and the ski resort. Will Varin (president), Jamon Frostenson (vice-president), and Russell Schiermeier (treasurer) all graduated from Camas High School. This group is excited about this historic donation of the ski area by Bruce Willis to a locally run, tax-exempt, nonprofit organization. Mr. Willis’ gift will assure that the Fairfield community and the surrounding area will be able to enjoy this treasure for years to come. The Fairfield Legion Hall is located at 114 East Camas Avenue, right behind the Post Office.

Leo Thomas Knowles Leo Thomas Knowles, an 87 year old Shoshone resident, passed away on Sunday, October 7, 2012 with his family at his side at the Twin Falls Care and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on November 25, 1924 in Emmett, Idaho, the first born child of Leo Osborne and Isabelle (Pitman) Knowles. In 1935 he moved to Dietrich, where he attended schools. In 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy “until the war was over”. He received his naval training at Farragut, Idaho Naval Training Center. He was eventually sent to Evansville, Indiana where he was assigned as a Motor Machinist’s Mate, a member of the “Black Gang”, for the landing Ship Tank (LST) 817. Dad always joked that LST stood for “Large Slow Target”, since the top speed of the LST was about 11 knots depending on which way the wind was blowing. LST’s transported tanks and other heavy equipment for the war’s effort and they were always an easy target for enemy submarines. During the spring, summer and early fall of 1945 the LST 817 made four trips from the Philippines to Okinawa during the Battle of Okinawa. Okinawa was the largest amphibious invasion of the Pacific Campaign and the last major naval campaign of World War II. He left the navy in 1946 with an honorable discharge and returned to Dietrich. He married Gloria Holt of Shoshone in Elko, Nevada 1947. They were later divorced. Leo lived in Shoshone for the last 65 years of his life. He worked for the Idaho Department of Transportation, where he was the parts and supply foreman until his retirement in 1986. Leo was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed garden-

ing up to the time of his death. When asked where he caught his latest big fish he would say, “In the mouth”. He was always a “backyard” auto mechanic and enjoyed tinkering with his vehicles. He enjoyed going to the 60th LST 817 Naval reunion and visiting with his shipmates and sharing stories. He was very proud of his military service and those he served with in the heat of battle. He is survived by his three children: Dennis Knowles of Cary, Ken (Ruth) Knowles of Burley and Debbie Keller of Twin Falls; five grandchildren and their families, Jessie Knowles (Dave) Pelham of Royal City, Washington, Justin (Sandy) Knowles of Palmdale, California, Heather (Ben) Felix of Grand Junction, Colordao, Trevor (Erin) Knowles of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and Hillary (Scott) Johnson of Dallas, Texas; fifteen great grandchildren, Ashlyn, Johnathan, Cody, Cami, Kyle, Ryan, Dylan, Jaden, Josh, Brendon, Morgan, Andrew, Sarah, Tate and Cole; and his sister, Edith Ward of Twin Falls. He was preceded in death by: his parents; his brother, Don Knowles; his nephew, Leo Donnavon Knowles; and his niece, Connie Jean Knowles Smith. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 13, 2012, at the Shoshone L.D.S. Church with Bishop Wallace Bingham conducting. Burial will follow at Shoshone Cemetery with full military honors under the direction of the Idaho National Guard Honor Guard. A visitation for family and friends will take place on Saturday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the Shoshone L.D.S. Church. Donations can be made to any Veteran’s Organization. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service – Shoshone Chapel. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.demarayfuneralservice.com.
DEATH/SERVICE NOTICE Florence Tina Fuller, 94, a resident of Wendell, passed away Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at Lincoln County Care Center in Shoshone. Arrangements are pending under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service – Wendell Chapel. Douglas D. Wilson, 73, of Hagerman, Idaho, returned home to our Heavenly Father on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 13th, at Farnsworth Mortuary in Jerome. A celebration of life will take place at 1 p.m. at the American Legion Hall in Wendell.

Dear Editor, Donna Pence has the experience, the work ethic, and the energy that will allow her to best represent District 26 in the Idaho Legislature. Donna has ably represented the citizens of Gooding, Camas, Lincoln, and Blaine Counties for the last 8 years in the House of Representatives. With an estimated 47% of the Legislature retiring or moving from the House to the Senate this year it is important we retain our seasoned legislators who will provide leadership and make sure things run smoothly. Donna, Wendy Jaquet, and Michelle Stennett have a well deserved reputation for keeping their citizens informed about what is happening in the Legislature. They hold town meeting in our communities before, about ½ ways through, and after the legislature adjourns. Each sends out individual weekly e-mail “Legislative Updates” that provide us with special insight into the legislative process. I have contacted Donna about issues and get quick replies and, where warranted, action is taken. As a former City Council member I know the amount of work that is involved with following up on these issues and I appreciate Donna’s dedication to working for her constituents. Donna has knocked on around 2,000 doors in this district to find out what the patrons want to see the legislature work on this next session. So far this has meant spending 3 or more hours in the hot sun for days on end to accomplish. Stamina is not only important in this aspect of her job but also in the long hours of the Legislative session. Donna is the active and involved Legislator this District deserves and my vote will be for her this Nov. 6th. In fact, there are many words to describe her: honest, intelligent, dependable, discerning, respectful, and hardworking. I follow the news media closely and am very troubled by the Republican party’s insistence on defining themselves as “conservatives” when their actions are anything but conservative. I am certain that a dictionary does not exist which defines that word as greedy, prejudicial, patriarchal, uncompromising, deceitful ideologues. Idaho has a sad history of low voter turnout at elections. However, I encourage everyone, no matter how disenfranchised you feel, to vote in the November 6 election. I know we seem to

Yet in spite of the efforts of many Republicans among our elected officials, there still does not exist a law that makes it illegal to vote for a person who is not designated by an “R” on the ballot. That is a myth harbored by many Idaho voters. I recently viewed a television documentary that revealed if everyone in Idaho would vote, and vote their true convictions, we could actually change the political atmosphere here. ...2012 Election continued teacher unions to two issues - salaries and benefits. Prior to this law, teachers could negotiate for a number of things like class sizes, student safety, lesson planning, classroom supplies, etc. While these issues are important, some school districts were being obligated for things they could not afford and/or things that were out of their control (i.e. fluctuations in student population). The other major part of S1108 is the elimination of renewable contracts - tenure. The idea of tenure started in higher education (colleges & universities) and was designed to protect teachers from unwarranted dismissal (often political in nature). Unfortunately, tenure makes it very difficult to fire a tenured teacher for anything other than gross misconduct. Under S1108, individuals with renewable contracts (tenure) prior to January 31, 2011 have the right to continue that contract as long as they give the school board timely notice of accepting the renewal. All others are limited to one or two year contracts. ----Proposition Two is in regards to S1110. This law provides for “performance pay” based on state-mandated test scores and student performance. It also provides bonus pay for hardto-fill positions and educational leadership. On the positive side, this law makes it possible for school districts to reward good teachers regardless of experience and education. It also encourages teachers to take difficult positions. On the negative side, teacher evaluation is based on student performance - something which is very difficult to measure, and which is subject to statistical anomalies. ----Proposition Three is in regards to S1184. This law changes a number of issues relating to retirement, social security, financial reporting, money for certain math and science classes, duel credit (up to 36 college or vo-tech credits), funds for the Idaho Digital Learning Academy, and other distributions of state funds. The part of this law which has received the most attention, however, is the so-called “laptops for students” program and the requirement of on-line course work. The integration of technology is an absolute necessity for our public school system if we want to compete in the modern world, and many of our schools are doing just that. In reality, this law changes very little; it just speeds up the process of making technology available to schools. The down side (at least to the opponents of this law) is that it has the potential of putting some teachers out of work. If this is true, the teachers most likely to loose their jobs will be those who are unwilling or unable to effectively use technology in their classrooms. ----Point of Caution: The wording in propositions 1, 2 & 3, is somewhat misleading. We are not voting to approve any legislation. The laws described above are already in place. If you support the laws passed by our state government in 2011, vote YES. If you support the propositions to overturn these laws, vote NO.
Living with Grief Most of us will experience the loss of a loved one at some time in our life. For certain, such losses are life altering. Life will never be the same. It is natural to stumble through life while experiencing many different emotions: profound sadness, numbness, depression,anger, guilt, denial, resentment, etc. It is natural to stumble through life with anger, resentment, profound sadness, numbness, etc. after the loss of a loved one. How we make sense of such losses and go on with our own lives is always a challenge. How can we meet our own needs and the needs of surviving members of our family while still mourning, hurting inside? Cup of Tee
The other day, while packing corn silage in the pit, an old International tenwheel truck brought in a load of silage. “Old Red” (as I am calling it) was contracted to our company to haul silage, and had been tipped over at least once in its working career. It trailed the other trucks like a runt pup, but needless to say, Red still hauls a pretty good sized load even yet. When the truck was brand new, it was probably a prize in anyone’s eyes. Now, Red looks second rate, but, who’s to judge. Old Red is still on the road working and creating revenue for a farm family. To see that old, red truck, I’m reminded of a 1964 Ford 1/2 ton pickup my dad traded for while I was in high school. At the time we lived in Sweet, Idaho, on top of a hill near Squaw Butte. Getting to the house was rough enough in good weather, much less in bad conditions. The old Ford pickup was light blue in color and we all called it Old Blue (at least those of us who drove it). In addition, we had a 1964 Dodge pickup that was dark blue. Funny, the old Dodge would get around anywhere the like the old Ford, but it was just called the “Old Dodge” (no name was given except during the times it was stuck). The 1964 Ford was equipped with a positive traction rearend. That made things easier for us to get to our home. The neighbor had owned the pickup prior to us, and they lived farther up the hill. Prior to them, some other neighbors had owned Old Blue. During its use from family to family, Blue had been rolled over a time or two. The paint was faded, and I believe it used a little oil with having over 230,000 miles. The heater worked excellent! (what else could you ask for in the winter?) Old Blue wasn’t much for dating, but would get you to school or haul a load. When you were in a bind, the truck would always come through. Good friend! I remember hauling twenty-three loads of gravel, where the rear bumper dragged the ground, to fill a creek wash near the house. But, before I got to the gravel, I hauled eleven loads of black dirt for a temporary fill. That night the rain poured. My dad was buried in the mud coming home from work. In this particular spot, he was unable to get out. I don’t know if the truck was called “Old Blue” or not, but I think I probably wasn’t called “Buddy Blue” either. Everyone has probably had a vehicle that they have named (personally, I don’t name my vehicles or tractors). Other than a good dog, a vehicle can be your best friend. They are always ready to go when you are. They never let you down. Sometimes they take a lot of abuse, and still join you in exciting adventures without cancelling your reservations. Your vehicle may help with a heavy load or take you to places you’ve never been before. A leisure drive in the country may be relaxing and stress relieving. If human friends were given colors, they may be blue, and need comfort and support. Or they could be true blue, which makes them the best of friends or “golden.” This is my “Cup of Tee” reflecting “Old Blue.” Tee Hurd
