News from the Heart of Idaho
Camas • Lincoln • Gooding

The Community Garden was founded just over ten years ago by the Gooding Soil Conservation District with the help of the NRCS and a multitude of community members. In the last three years, the garden has received two grants from the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) to revitalize the garden and help pay part-time staff during the summer. The grant monies also helped start the Neighborhood Community Garden in Shoshone. While the garden provides space for 8-10 private plots, the big goal is to provide fresh vegetables to soup kitchens, senior centers, Helping Hands & Hearts, and other food pantries in the Gooding, Wendell and Hagerman Valley areas. Over the last several years, the garden has delivered around 6500 to 7200 pounds of fresh vegetables per year to these organizations.
The garden is also a place to showcase conservation practices with cover crops, drought-tolerant grasses, pollinator habitat, fruit trees, and composting. Students from elementary and high schools have attended educational tours, helped with plantings, and worked on community projects for the state Envirothon contest.
Dacia Yoder took over the management of the garden from Polly Huggins three years ago, and started the Fall Festival as a fun way of promoting the garden. Saddly, Polly passed away last year. "Polly was a great inspiration and a wealth of information about gardening."
Come and enjoy the festival and check out all the wonderful things growing at the Gooding Community Garden.

El Tap Café in Wendell
The El Tapatio Restaurant in Wendell is a favorite place for many of us to enjoy Mexican food. Jaime and Beatriz Ponce started the restaurant in 1998, and not only do they serve great food, but the service always has the feel of being an old friend.
Last Thursday, their daughter, Michelle, started a new venture right next to the restaurant on A Avenue West - El Tap Café.

The idea began in 2019 and planning began to take shape. Then came Covid, and the world came to a screeching halt. But great ideas never die, they are just postponed, and earlier this year construction started on the little building.
Inspired by the coffee houses in Mexico, Michelle is serving regular coffee (brew of the day), espresso, and a selection of specialty lattes: Dulce De Leche, Latte Bombón, Java Jalisco, and lots more.
Along with Mexican pastries, she has ice cream and ice cream treats (shakes, floats & sundaes). And... since it is fall, she has two seasonal Pumpkin Spice drinks: Que Pasa Calabasa and Mexican Mocha.
El Tap Café is open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. Stop by or call in your order: 208-944-0538.

Mary Alice Harmison Fullmer
July 2, 1934—September 25, 2024
I was born at home on the Salmon Tract (aka Salmon track) south of Twin Falls, Idaho on July 2, 1934, to Geneva (Sally) Crays Harmison and Raymond Alfred Harmison. I joined a 3 year old brother, Kenneth Ray. It was the big Depression years. It was the years of growing up with grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, of respecting your elders and other people properly, but most of all your parents, God and country. What would the neighbors think if you misbehaved?

In 1940 our family increased, adding a little sister, Rosetta Sharon (Shari), and in 1941 another little sister, Alta Karen. We moved one week after Alta was born to Monrovia, California. Being in the second grade I remember wearing dog tags and hearing air raids and hiding under our desks. Japanese had been spotted off the Santa Barbara Coast. My mom said We are going back to Idaho. The same precautionary measures were also held at Washington school in Twin Falls during that period of time, the days of much rationing to support war efforts. I graduated in 1952 from Twin Falls High School.
After high school I worked for Western Union in Pocatello and married Robert William Coulter in March 1953. We moved from Boise to Idaho Falls in 1955, then to Las Vegas in 1962, and had 4 wonderful children together. We divorced in 1970.
I fulfilled my dream of working for the airlines, first for Western Airlines – ”The only way to fly!” –from 1969, later acquired by Delta airlines, and retired in 1991. I have many long¬time friends from the airline years. I have lived in 10 states and visited 48 states, traveled to Fiji, Hawaii, Mexico, Alaska, England, Spain, France, Italy, and twice to Ireland. I loved Fiji, and remain fascinated by the Colosseum and Pompeii.
I have had a great life with many ups and downs, but the conclusion I have come to in my old age is “Being old is not the Golden years!”. They are hard years.
I truly loved driving school bus in Gooding for 10 years during my retirement, and bought my home in Gooding. The children were wonderful and special and I have many fond memories of those years.
I have enjoyed crafts (mostly making cards), painting, driving, playing cards, Utah Jazz and NBA, little towns, good friends, firm handshakes, honesty, dependability, dogs, cats, the smell of rain on the sagebrush, shopping, freshly mowed hay, more shopping, and most of all knowing I will be with my Heavenly Father by the time you read this. He has forgiven me my sins and welcomed this child of His home.
I am survived by...
My eldest, wonderful, smart daughter, Cynthia Lynn (Cyndi) Coulter (Jonathan) of Boise, grandchildren Ben (Megan) of Notus, and Emily (Zak) and great-grandsons Asher and Blake of Boise.
My oldest, down to earth, brilliant son, Brian Jeffery Coulter (Kathy) of Oregon, his children Jennifer Marie and great-grandson Ethan of Washington, Jeffery Wyatt (Nicole) and great-grandson Hunter and step-great-grandsons Trevor and Oliver of Utah.
My wonderful, handsome, world traveler son, Curtis Coulter (Judy), his son Brent and daughter Alexis (Gina) and step-granddaughter Kendra of Reno.
My youngest, wonderful, brilliant, caring and loving son Derek Coulter (special friend Jackie) and his sons Dash and Connor of Utah.
My sister Alta Harris (Dale) of Gooding, Sister-in-law Ruth Holcomb Harmison of Texas, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
I was preceded in death by mother Geneva (Sally) Miller, father Raymond Harmison, sister Sharon Sherman, brother Ken Harmison, step-brother Dale Bailey, and nephews Tim Harris and Chad Harris, and many wonderful friends.
A celebration of life was held on Sunday, October 6, 2024, at the Gooding Springs Calvary Chapel with a potluck to following at 3:00 p.m.

Sally Vicki Agee (Fillmore)
Sally Vicki Agee (Fillmore) passed away peacefully in her sleep at Desert View Care Center in Buhl, Idaho on October 4th, 2024.
Sally was born on June 20, 1939 in Wells, Nevada, to father William Lester Agee and mother Dot Bricker Agee. She grew up in the high desert sagebrush ranch country of O’Neil Basin, Nevada with her sisters Teddy and Peggy and brothers Varl and Dize, on their family cattle ranch on Wilson Creek. She went to elementary school in a one-room log school house on the ranch, rode horseback in the willowed meadows and sagebrush pastures and climbed rimrocks with her Agee siblings and cousins. The joy of her childhood on the ranch blessed her entire life. She showed 4-H steers or “Baby Beef” as they were called in those days at the Elko County Fair and exhibited two grand champion steers in the 1950’s and she was Rodeo Queen of the 1956 Wells Rodeo.

Sally attended high school in Wells where she met Harold Smead, the handsome, brown-eyed, “new kid in town” who became the quarterback of the Leopards football team. Sally and Harold were married June 8th, 1957 in Wells the day after she graduated from high school. They were living and working at the family ranch in O’Neil where they had two brown-eyed daughters; Stacy in 1958 and Vicki in 1960.
In 1960, Sally’s father, Lester, added another property to the Agee business and purchased a farm in Idaho and Sally and Harold moved their girls to Eden where they raised beans, beets and ran a small feedlot with Sally’s brother & sister-in-law, Dize and Loretta Agee. They kept Highway 93 busy driving back and forth from Eden to O’Neil to work calves, plant crops and keep both outfits running. Sally and Harold became members of the Eden Riding Club and enjoyed riding and playing polo.
Sally and Harold were divorced in 1963 and Sally moved to Twin Falls and began her life time work in hospitality as a waitress and eventually a motel manager. She started her girls in school in Twin Falls but moved back to the Eden farm in 1968,

George Allen Benson
George Allen Benson was born August 20th, 1927, to Bessie and Allan Aldrich Benson of Wendell at the Saint Valentine Hospital. He was the youngest with 5 older sisters, they finally got a son.

When he was discharged from the Navy he worked various jobs, one included as a meat cutter for Marlowe’s Meat Market, Dick Marlowe was dads best man at his wedding. He then was hired on with the Postal Service in Wendell for the next 32 years.
He met and married Violet Petersen of Wendell on June 1st, 1952, and had a long loving life together for 72 years. They have 3 sons, Kent and Kurt twins and 3 year later Clint.
Dad maintained a love for horses and hunting dogs throughout his life, there were many hours of horse trading, shoeing horses and working on various ranches working
after a brief second marriage, and raised her daughters there. Sally retired in 2001 after working many years as head clerk at the Apollo Motor Inn in Twin Falls.
After the passing of Sally’s mother in 2015, the family sold the Eden property and Sally moved to Bliss, Idaho to be closer to her grandkids and be involved in their activities. She lived in her own house at Spring Cove Ranch near daughter Stacy until June of this year. Sally never missed a steer show, a ball game or a birthday party and was so tickled to be chosen “The Fan of the Night” at her great grandson’s basketball game.
